How many people can conceive the most preposterous motorcycle designs and then go on to build them from scratch with the most exquisite attention to detail. A unique and talented eccentric in the Great British tradition. Why are we importing vehicles when we can produce engineering talent like this...?
Unlike Germany and Japan, to pull relevant comparisons out of the air, Britain no longer regards these attributes as a source of pride. In those countries, “engineer”, at the level we’re witnessing here, is seen as a profession with as much automatic status as a doctor or a lawyer. Our hierarchical social structure tends to see posh Classics & Greats scholars as the pinnacle of accomplishment, and a grubby handed mech eng as akin to plumbers of electricians. Not that these guys aren’t also worthy of respect.
As a precision engineer for over 25 years i respect that guy enormously what a guy. Some truly lovely bikes . Terrible interview always interrupting ..
An American here. God, Alan is amazing. What an inspiration. He makes everything sound so simple: “I took my hacksaw, cut the case in half, welded on another cylinder, made the crankshaft on me lathe...”

It proves the most important tool you have is your mind, apply it the right way you can tackle anything. Allen's honesty and humility is refreshing, absolutely no ego.

He's the kind of guy you'd want to help, work with, for nothing just to gain knowledge and experience and because what they do is so fascinating.
I am surprised how Allen isn’t more widely known. The bit where he showcases his tools makes his work and attention to detail even more impressive, and I’ve seen most of all his videos with my Grandfather. I own a SOHC CB750 here in California that I completely disassembled and put back together, even the engine I did some custom fabrication, added my own flare to the body. Watching Millyard as well as my trip to Japan for 7 months taught me a philosophy that makes my garage and that bike a special place; a sanctuary rather. It’s amazing how far thinking and understanding with a bit of care to craft can create things that others may deem as impossible. Cheers. Mr. Millyard is a modest genius, head and shoulders above what passes for motorcycle media on this side of the Atlantic. His videos should be on any motorcyclist's or automotive engineer's playlist. Also I didn't realise he was still working full time in his regular job, yet he can build an engine from scratch in a matter of weeks and build the whole bike in a few months in his spare time !

As everyone noticed the interviewer kept cutting Allen off, even changing the subject. Very rude indeed this man is a genuine genius at least let him finish what you asked him in the first place. Love your work Allen you’re the man.
I am so happy to hear that he did a project bike with his son. Some Father/son project/time together can be very precious. Edit: she sounds really nice running.
I'm going to leave a third comment: I really don't see the critisism of the interviewer. He teased all the good stuff out of Allen, and in fact, this was a beter watch than some of Allen's videos on his own. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it. Wonderfull stuff! Thank you!
Best interview I've seen Allen do, seems really at ease with the interviewer even though he did interrupt quite a bit. Love all of his stories of how he conjured up all his different bikes.
Allen is ace, he is everything that I would aspire to be were I younger I do a lot of my own work and servicing on my bike, but anything I do pales into insignificance when compared to Allen! An absolute scholar and genius!!

It’s been a real privilege to be able to watch these shows and learn from this man! Keep up the amazing work. Can’t wait for the next show!
I've said this before Allen Millyard is beyond a magican, watching this, his focus, dedication and attention to detail is mind-boggling. An enginerring genius.

Just a humble, classy English gentleman out for a ride in the the countryside on his motorbike, that he built from scratch in his small workshop. I have watched Mr. Millyard with his builds for a few years and I am always amazed with his humility and abilities. I would love to share a few pints and a conversation with him. It was George Bernard Shaw who putatively observed that Britain and America are two countries divided by a common language. Even closed captions couldn't follow some of what was said, but because I am such a fan of Allen's I knew what he was talking about. This was an excellent interview. Most of the questions I would have wanted to ask were asked (however I would be interested in knowing how he managed the time and energy to raise children, maintain a job and a marriage, what with all the energy and time he had to have put in to his incredible home engineering). I also really loved seeing the modest surroundings where he did his artistry. Personally, I have spent most of my life (dating back to childhood) playing with various motors and vehicles and such, and I have continued to do so into my adult life. Motorized vehicles give me such an visceral response, like they were works of art. Obviously, Allen has taken this same trend magnitudes further than I could ever hope, but it is inspiring and absolutely spellbinding hearing his account. Thanks for doing this interview and uploading it!
Great video, amazing stuff, yes I agree will all the comments about the interviewer, Alan could you get Henry Cole to do a full in depth series about each of your bikes?
This was a very nicely done interview. You got a great deal out of Allen Millyard in describing his philosophy and way of thinking and doing. Not everyone can do this.
Mr Millyard has always fascinated me, the man is absolutely off the chart on skills yet more modest than most people I know, such a rare combination these days!
What a great interview. I only found Allen some months ago and have to say he is one bloody brilliant shed-engineer. Never seen such a guy before in my life. My uncle was very immaculate from his 1956 mb 190 and had almost the same set of mind. Built things in his carage and kept my hometowns car museum alive till his passing few years ago. Damn Allen, you are a top man and what you said about tools - "why would you need more than these". Cheers from Finland!!!
Thank you for posting this interview! It is good to hear Allen tell some of his backstory. I love how Allen is not just an excellent metal worker, machinist, and engineer; but also an artist. There are so many ways to appreciate his creations - looks, sounds, performance, etc. He is an inspiration to all of us DIY'ers!
Allen Millyard should be snapped up as a designer for one of the major companies or start his own. The concepts this man would have locked subconsciously in his brain would be amazing. And a hell of a nice down to earth guy who isnt up himself at all. Thanks for sharing some great stories Allen and keep creating.
18:15 "Being bored with a VFR 750, was where it all started."...Allen Millyard. What an amazing life and an amazing man. Allen is a British national treasure. In a world filled with big mouthed, stupid people, listening to a calm, classy, brilliant, British craftsman tell us all we need is a hacksaw and a few tools to do great things - because He's Actually Done Them, is really refreshing. 37:30 His son inspires him to build the Viper motor bike. As everyone noticed the interviewer kept cutting Allen off, even changing the subject. Very rude indeed this man is a genuine genius at least let him finish what you asked him in the first place. Love your work Allen you’re the man.
He was beyond rude
50 minutes has never gone so quick. What an absolute honour.
Thank you!
its true, ive got more to say locked away in my mind than i can remember to say on my own.
A wealth of knowledge and ability.
But comes over as a really nice chap. Great interview.
Best interview I've seen Allen do, seems really at ease with the interviewer even though he did interrupt quite a bit. Love all of his stories of how he conjured up all his different bikes.
Love his enthusiasm for everything motorcycles 🏍 brilliant engineer and a delight to see a genius at work 👌
@vtid1981, it's not just everything motorcycles..... Allen restored his daughter in laws 1910 wall clock! He's a true engineer..... a Legend!
Love how he reinvented a kind of Suzuki 500 Titan... we need a video of a drag race between these 2 , two, too .
Allen is just amazing, he is super human, so matter of fact, what he has achieved with just a few tool in a single garage is unbelievable 😵💫
This guy is amazing he literally can make a motorcycle out of anything.
Allen is ace, he is everything that I would aspire to be were I younger I do a lot of my own work and servicing on my bike, but anything I do pales into insignificance when compared to Allen! An absolute scholar and genius!!
This was a joy to watch, 50 minutes of sheer pleasure. Thank you!
Wonderful interview! What an amazing talent you have to see these things before you start the project. I’d love to hang out and listen to all the stories and ideas that are yet to come. It’s been a real privilege to be able to watch these shows and learn from this man! Keep up the amazing work. Can’t wait for the next show!
I've said this before Allen Millyard is beyond a magican, watching this, his focus, dedication and attention to detail is mind-boggling. An enginerring genius.
great ending for a great story... mr Millyard is an inspiration on more than just one level..
stay safe everyone, have fun when possible
Nice interview Bertie, I could listen the Allen all day long.
Who dislikes this?? What sad lives they must have. Genius and nice guy
The dislikers, they cannot, so it must be fake!
The human race is doomed - or maybe we should stop putting warning labels on everything, and let stupidity weed itself out.
Just an awesome person. We need more like him in this world.
One of the most talented people in the world. WOW.
The interviewer is keeping him engaged. Beautiful job sir.
Genius! Both in terms of technical ability and imagination. I’m in awe!
I'm a UK Expat now living in New Zealand and have riden bikes for
close on 50 years and still ridding, but now a days much slower!
I have known about Allen Millyard for some years now and have
watched videos like this before, but thought it about time I put pen
to paper!
Allen, please keep on making these great machines please, they will
not just be for you, but for the whole world to see and enjoy THANX.
Lastly, a BIG thank you to Bertie Simmonds, for such a well crafted interview, THANX.
I'm speaking for all the motorcyclists and motorcycles engineers main one myself now retired I thank you what this young man does is very unique I think is great work but it doesn't take a genius to do this just take someone who is committed to working The Angles it's all about geometry and frequency guys keep up the good work young man I love your videos
Its a passion for him, some may not see logic.
@@mrwolsy3696 you're right sir I will not disagree with that whatsoever I did my dislogical things in motorcycling and so I can relate to what you're saying there there's a lot of Truth to that
What a pleasure to see Allan at home.. I bet that his brain is as organised as his workshop as well! I admire this man and his " I will make sure it will work" ethos.
Awesome Allen , he is so interesting to listen to. One of my favourite machinist/motorcyclist types ever!
I met Allen recently. He is a really nice chap. So unassuming gentleman. A real clever man. Thank you for all you do to encourage us!
I could listen to Allen all day. Truly amazing creations
It’s obscene that he can be gifted with this much talent . Well played that man
This was a very nicely done interview. You got a great deal out of Allen Millyard in describing his philosophy and way of thinking and doing. Not everyone can do this.
You are joking right?
Mr Millyard has always fascinated me, the man is absolutely off the chart on skills yet more modest than most people I know, such a rare combination these days!
Hi Allen, great viewing for any enthusiast, beatiful brace of machines, as always appreciate you taking the time. Cheers, Alex.
Every mechanical engineering institute should invite him for a speech at every graduation.
But he's not diverse enough.
You can't help but like Allen Millyard, so humble yet brilliant!
Allen the true engineering wizard, and a really nice guy.
Man; this guy is awesome and love the story. Have to agree, the interviewer totally spoilt the story
Such modesty such ability a national treasure
18:15 "Being bored with a VFR 750, was where it all started."...Allen Millyard.
What an amazing life and an amazing man.
Allen is a British national treasure.
In a world filled with big mouthed, stupid people, listening to a calm, classy, brilliant, British craftsman tell us all we need is a hacksaw and a few tools to do great things - because He's Actually Done Them, is really refreshing.
37:30 His son inspires him to build the Viper motor bike.
On Ebay..."Oh my God, there's a Viper engine."
Absolutely classic.
Allen is a special breed of engineer. Fantastic vision of what might be
