I've had the 502 flat head for years. Love it, EXCEPT, yes, that darn pan lock. Uggh. :)

      @mochouinard 5 лет назад

I got it as well and I have issue with the fluid system where it take a certain amount of force to get it to start moving and when it start moving it goes too quick... I was hoping it wouldn't do the same things as the cheaper tripod head I used before.

Suggestion; What I did was reverse my camera on the mounting plate.Basically head is backwards.Have to slide on from front, but knobs are in perfect position.Pan handle is easily configurable to face opposite direction.Strangely I feel like the action is better.

Love your videos and your energy.
One point; when i point my camera on my tripod at any tilt angle and release the handle, it remains pointed and does not move up or down. At 1:24 your camera bounced back up when you released the handle. That is not acceptable to me anymore. At one time I didn't know any better. I thought I was supposed to lock the camera at the tilt angle once I got there. Now I know it is possible, with the right head, to point and release. Also, when panning, when you reach the angle you are panning to, there should be no spring-back. Again, point and release. I have a Sachtler tripod and head which set me back $1K at B&H. Remember, cameras come and go but your tripod/head can last you for your whole career.

Hey, this is the head I use! Agree with the inconvenient pan lock location, but it hasn't let me down yet, great video!

Fellow writer/cinematographer/director here. I started following you a few months ago and have enjoyed your content. The only problem I have is that I live in Canada the awesome equipment you recommend is almost always triple the price for no reason. I am namely talking about the Side by Side Power Packer which is $35 USD but because of conversion, shipping, and third-party seller markup, it costs almost triple that at $100 CAD.

I've almost had a camera break on the 502. the flip lock system tends to unscrew itself so you have to check them on everytime, no exception. before that In my club we were using a vinten vision 10... yeah I know, not the same gear. but we recentely got a cartoni tripod (can't remember the reference)... incredible gear !

    Good, fast, fun-fact-filled review!
I just ordered an MVH502AH head to upgrade my o-l-d Manfrotto 3011 (heavy) tripod to a more video-friendly platform. The old 3030 head was okay for still camera photography, but was severely lacking in the "smoothness" department for video.

Just a heads up: those spreader bars break. the silver/gray part that holds the hook just... breaks. had to replace a few over the years I worked with that tripod. You can buy a replacement spreader, but can't buy the silver/gray part by itself. Good tripod overall. Enjoy!

I still think you don't need to keep your monitor on the camera when it's on the slider, but maybe even then it may be too much weight. I attach a couple of light stands to my slider when things get too heavy.

I've got that same head but got it on a ifootage wild bull t5 tripod legs.
    It's amazing :)
Though the mounting plate does kinda interfere with my sony a7iii, the 24-105 lense is pretty thick so the zoom ring kinda rubs against the plate.
Could probably get another plate to give some height.
Or i could mount it futher back, but then i wouldn't get perfect center balance.
Not really designed for small mirrorless - but other then that its fantastic :D

How do you keep people from stealing concepts while shopping out a script? I had a role in a no budget movie and dropped a LOGLINE to the DP and Director. 6 months later they had shot a short Film w My Concept.(after cutting the entire role i played from the first short) The whole crew were in film school together and i was just sum dude who answered a Craigslist post. It sucked ass and they didnt come close to My Story but i worry because i believe the concept is unique and a good enough eye could snatch.

Haven't used a tripod in 20 years. When I watch a tripod review, I always wonder about bounce - does it pan smoothly and THEN rest at a dead stop, or does it twitch when you let go of the arm? Or is that no longer an issue with any fluid heads?

The counterbalance on these is fixed at 4kg. Wondering how it is to work with when you have a lighter setup on it. Does it self-adjust when stopping a tilt movement, for instance? Looking for a head that will STOP when I do and not push back.

So question - whats the best way to ADD weight to the head/camera so that you get it up to the 4kg @ 55mm center of gravity, so that the fixed 4kg counterbalance is matched? Seems like adding weight evenly split in front of / behind the camera in some way would be the way to go.

Nice Video! these high frequences in audio on your voice are little hearable and distracting xD
I bought Manfrotto 536 Tripod and Nitrotech N8 for my Mirrorless camera its a little overkill but it works exactly the same with your tripod without any spreader and also is carbon fiber + the head can handle bad weather. Your tripod kit purchace was my first choice but then i look far for the real lifetime investment. Because im Hybrid shooter so this kind of tripod will cover me in photography and videography and why not to cinema it can handle heavy rigs as well. Also i was almost ready to upgrade to a new camera but then i thought my semi plastic cheap tripod that i had so i said to my self that cameras and new technology just passing away time to time but tripods are the FOUNDATION of the art ...so "when you fill the major gaps of important equipment then you are free to spend your money in new tech"
Also i give you an idea for your next videos to do "what is important to invest FIRST before you feel that your camera sucks and buy new camera without having the basic staff (like lighting tripods etc) Actually we dont have to feel bad for our camera..i think you said it in one of your videos that some guys just spend anything to expensive gear and just expecting to create a full movie with it without practise their selves on short ones...
Because the majority are victims of marketing...
I really give you respect for purchase cheap and valuable tripod kit to just do the job done respectivily and then you dont buy new camera but you invest again to the real foundation that is tripod and head...and then more lighting gear in the future :)
And what we learn from that? We learn that when you invest to foundations then your hands take place and master camera movements and beautiful frames and also lighting techniques if you invest on lights...because all we know how to expose correct and control the camera...so a new camera is the last thing that we need!
Make more like these videos that reminds to people the initial objective of the art :)

the 502 ergonomics are bad in general. Why! is the tilt lock on the right side? Yes, the pan lock is virtually impossible to get used to in its location. Any camera over 5 pounds, counter balance is out the window. Get a Sachtler.

  • @cuthugas

Darious, I bought the 3pod tripod based on your review. It is a great tripod, but the fluid head feels a little sticky to me (though I have nothing to really compare it to).
Is it possible to buy the 502AH and replace the 3pod head onto the existing bowl?? Or just replace it with a Manfrotto ball fluid head?
Let me know if you have ever dealt with that.
