It’s a small country with only 5 million population yet still produced 2 massive worldwide clubs with great stature, history and tradition, Every British and European recorded attendances are all held by the Old Firm, They were also the first in British football to reach European finals and won the European cup, How many countries similar size and population of Scotland has produced 2 huge powerful clubs like them, say what you want but if you put these 2 giants in England with their sheer size, stature and fanbase they’d both be ginormous and compete no problem after a few seasons.

Simon is right, as a Glaswegian it drives me crazy that the small minds within the league acts as an anchor. If they were to stop the small minded squabbling the league & product would be better. Extend league to 18 like a grown up league, stop buying so many foreign players. Look at some of the Scots that have gone to Italy (Lewis Ferguson apparently now being sought by Napoli & Juve), starring in EPL, good Scottish players are there so no need for so many under performing imports. Rangers have been punching above their weight in Europe but Celtic and others need to improve there.

      Spot on mate.
I think 18 would be too soon right now. It would take maybe 10-15 years before we could get back to that but a 16 is a must and do it like in Belgium.
We need to generate real Internet in the league title, so like the Belgians, play home and away each, for 30 games, then halve the points, and top 4 play each other home and away again for title. That way we may actually have a different champion.
Also, Slavia Prague and Sparta Prague have average attendances the same as Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen.
The 2 Prague teams, got to Round of 16 in Europa league again this season, yet Hearts and hibs never made the groups of Conference and Aberdeen never got out the group.
How can the 2 Prague teams be doing so well for their size while Scotlands 3 same sized clubs do so poorly every year. It is the clubs faults.

Scotland has a population of 5
4Million. We have 1.4illion MORE than Croatia.
Dinamo Zagreb is mostly Croatian players. The whole league is only 32% foreign players because they care more about homegrown players.
The Croatian football league TV deal is LESS than the SPFL TV deal. What Zagreb do well, is develop players and sell them for huge profits. They are regarded as one of the best in the world for it.
Hibs sold Nisbet for £1.5M right? Hearts sold Hicky for similar, Aberdeen sold Fergison for similar.
In Coratia, those players go for at least Double that.

Aberdeen and Hearts demanding 50/50 for cup games at Hampden yet they do not get more than 19k average attendance every season.
Aberdeen have been down to around 15-17k per season, yet a few years back they took 42k fans, all in Aberdeen gear to Celtic Park for a league cup final under McInnes. Where the fck are those fans every year.

If the Premier League want to further cement their place at the top of the global audience charts we should create a British Premier League. Scotland have fallen so far behind the rest of the mainland, look at Wales and how the Prem and Championship revenues and beyond that have helped Welsh football out enormously. What id propose is Scotland keep the Scottish F.A Cup but take part in the Premier League/football league, that way even if Rangers and Celtic find themselves in different leagues they will still have an opportunity for an Old Firm derby to keep them well entertained. The reason scottish football is so terrible outside the old firm is purely because literally no other club can compete financially with them. People say it as if its the other clubs fault. If you love in Scotland you know in all cities and rural areas people only support 1 or 2 teams. They have such a monopoly that the media mostly concentrates on glasgow and that's all the rest of scotland see. It's far easier to support a team that has success than to support your local team who may be struggling.
Scottish football needs rangers and celtic to go before it can heal. It would start from scratch, the level may be lower for the first while but longer term for scottish football to thrive they need the Glasgow two to go.
"Oh but scottish football would die!?!?"
No you'd have other clubs gates increase massively due to the league being highly competitive with most teams close to a level playing field. When rangers were liquidated the gates for every club bar celtic increased massively. The same would happen again.

I tend to ignore wankers that love to talk down the SPL for cheap brownie points. The lower echelons of English Football is not great either, which could be comparable to Scottish Football. However, Simon makes some very good points. For me the problems lies with those running the league, the clubs also don't help themselves with this 11-1 voting system & some of them are extremely selfish. The pyramid system is also a joke. Sectarian behaviours is also something that needs to be dealt with. Loyalty is also a problem in terms of promising players looking for a bigger pay check, but you cannot really blame them. The selling of Scottish Football is the biggest problem and that lies with the governing body, compare similar sized countries, that have way bigger broadcasting rights. However, facilities are improving, and lots of work is going into grassroots football.

  • @sVieira151

I think it's mighty unfair. You have to take into account various things when evaluating the league. The biggest factor is that the population of Scotland is just slightly above the population of Birmingham metropolitan. That is a huge factor when determining talent pools and potential growth from outside investment.
Unless other teams manage to gain a wide foreign fanbase, it'll always primarily be the Glasgow big boys that dominate, because unless more money is going into the game, it can't grow.

    • @sVieira151

@darthpepe2994 I absolutely agree. It's more absolute quantity rather than relative quantity.

As for the Scots legends you mentioned - I can understand, but equally - Scotland has never done well at international tournaments, even those days. They did manage to qualify but I believe that is because the level of competition in Europe is much greater now. Scotland still produce some big talents and we're seeing more of them again. Hate to agree with Simon on this but he is right, until the financial structure and management of the scottish leagues are changed, then it will always be viewed this way and Rangers and Celtic will be the only teams who achieve anything. The league structure of the SPL will never change as teams see the opportunity to play Rangers and Celtic 4/5 times in a season more financially viable. Broadcasters only stick games on TV if one of those teams are involved meaning more money goes to them and not spread across the rest of the league. Lets not forget that the english system wasn't exactly setting the world alight prior to the crazy financial investment in creating the Premier League

It's hard for Jim to take but its a miracle if a Scottish team even gets through the qualifiers. Most of them, and sometimes including Rangers and Celtic, get battered by teams we've never heard of before. They're out of europe before the season even begins!
Rangers and Celtic should probably aim for the Europa Conference league if they want to win a european trophy ever again, but since they're always 1 and 2 they'll never get the chance. They'll just get battered by some team from Latvia in the europa league and then it's back to beating Motherwell 4-0 on the weekend.

The problem with our game is the standard of refereeing. In Scotland, what is deemed a foul, or a card is a mystery. The tackles that go in from the lower sides are absolutely horrendous and half the time there's not even a free kick. In the premier league, they'd be straight reds. If the refereeing was better and didn't allow that kind of game, the other teams would be forced into having to actually play football. Which may let a start!

Also, Hearts, Aberdeen and hibs have the same a
Size average attendances as Slavia Prague and Sparta Prague.
They have BIGGER average attendances than Viktoria Plezn and Dinamo Zagreb.

To be fair, Simon is right as in there is nowhere near enough money in Scottish football, and that is down to the sfa and the spfl.
English lower leagues have more money.
The spfl tried to be smart with sky, and it backfired years ago, and sky gave them less.
Stupid game times during the week, plus teams not being able to fill their stadium.
The German model is the best thing they should follow, and scrap this boring set up for our supposed top tier.

The league is poor overall tbh the teams outside rangers and celtic don’t help themselves constantly hiring long ball managers like football from the 70s sit with everyone behind the ball 95% of the time

Give them the prem money and they’d win the league within 10 years easy. Bigger fan base than every team in England bar United

Rangers who are alongside Liverpool, Brighton and West Ham in europe tonight? Laughable. Both Celtic and Rangers would be incredibly rich overnight if they joined the prem, tv money, sponsorship. Wouldn't last a season?? They would very quickly displace two current prem teams with their 50,000 seater plus full stadiums and massive supports which dwarf at least half of the Premier League

The biggest problem for the SPL is also its only real draw. Celtic v Rangers. Nobody beyond their own small fan base cares about any other team or any other match. The old firm is the biggest and only selling point they have, and that ranks below 90% of other big derby or rivalries. If they vanished other teams would have a far more competitive league. But also nobody would watch.

well the scottish league was once a strong league right up to the early 90s.aberdeen beat real madrid in the 80s and dundee utd beat barcelona home and away in the 80s.The bosman rule were you were allow only 4 foreign players in your team, once they done away with that rule the gulf in class of the big leagues moved away from the smaller leagues.

We also changed our complete setup in 75, which once settled has destroyed our game in Scotland.
Relegating 8 teams from our top flight and 2nd division in 75. 18-18 league setup we had. Went to a 10-10-10.
We scrapped the shared gate receipts also.
We changed the keagie from the old Group stage and 2-leg knockout rounds after groups, to single leg knockouts.
Once all those changes had taken effect, we ended up with a lot more weaker clubs and only a handful of strong clubs.
We fckd our league so the few could get richer.

the SPL league size needs increased. But i mean, from simons point of view, bit rich coming from a country who's top league has RUINED football with paying ridiculous prices for even bang average players and using someone else's money to do so eg- TV. Look at the the lad we have from wolves -silva. raw player, can see he could be good, still has to prove it in big games and still needs to improve, 35 million they paid for him or whatever it was? so pay 35 mil for the "chance" of a good player? Money killing the game and EPL is the main culprit. Its not sustainable and will crash at some point.
