History of Mercedes - Benz W116 /280S, 280SE, 280SEL, 300SD, 350SE, 350SEL, 450SE, 450SEL,450SEL 6.9

Initial models consisted of the 280S and 280SE with 2.8 L inline-six engines and 350SE with a 3.5 L V8 engine. Six months later, the 4.5 L V8 engine was introduced wearing the 450SE and 450SEL badges, the latter with a 100 mm longer wheel base benefiting the rear passengers. From November 1973 the long wheel-base version was also available as the 350SEL, and in April 1974 also as the 280SEL.

@@HistoryOfAutomobile Thanks for honoring the W116. With respect to narration, I am irritated by pronounciation of SEL, as a word instead of initials, as S E L. Just a thought, for instance, throughout the video, its very hard to concentrate on the content of the narration, because the images of the W116 models keeps alternating and within each transition, the camera does not focus on an image of a still shot.

this was my favorite body and have 73 500SE and a 280SE from 74 i bought later . In 73 was like a car from the future most of other brands were still looking very old this sold new but this was at early 2000´s level or yet to other brand to release a so well put together car, even today . It was my family car for years and till today i´m waiting for it to give me a mechanical or whatever problem and we´re on 2024, the options ofered for the car in 73 was like if i was in candy store with 5 years old, i paid all the extras and mine as a part still with the hidraulics developed by mercdes for it´s cars in 1971 for the 350 SE 6.3 V8, as i also have a 71 350 SE but nothing hidraulic , the 73 500SE it as a system ,hidraulic one that no matter what you put in the back it always stays leveled, this was love at first sight, the 300D when released in late 70´s if you look it as the same kind of style of design as they alwaays released the now called E class with similarities to the older S-class that at the time wasn´t a class but the E´s and S´s, three body types excludind the SL´s, after 3 years bought also the 450SLC but the kids complained about the room on the back they were using a lot of space in the 500SE

SEL is a type of body not a series the model were the S´s and there was the S, SE and SEL ,meaning long room in the back seat for the feet, having a litle more short the trunk ,the SEL was kind of the limousine , no need for it as a family car, the S and SE were already too big compared with any other brand, excluding cars from the same range like rolls royce who was considered the best car in the world and in second place the mercedes, some do find it strange because they didn´t live by those years none of the known brands today had a close to this car , only jaguar but not so complete or some american cars but none had the quality of driving, even today is rare

@@RUfromthe40s The "S' was the type, or class, the 'E' for models with fuel injection (the updated 'K' Jetronic) and the 'L' was for that long bodied model. The numbers preceding gave the ballpark engine capacity. So easy to make out the models, unlike their current badging.
