I'm latina and I can say that this song embodies a perfect amount of latin influence. It's not offensive nor stereotypical in any way. The amount of guitar is perfect and they didn't throw random spanish words BUT the part that you mentioned saying that is unique, it's actually a spanish phrase. It says "Menea para abajo", "menear" is a dance move we do when dancing to regguetón or stuff like that, let's call it twerk but is not actually twerking, its weird to describe.
Anyway, as a latina I LOVE this song and it's a great way to combine k-pop and latin sounds. I've talk with other latin friends and they also love it, so I guess Dream did a pretty decent job with this one. 💚
Ps. As I mentioned, I'm latina, borned and raised in Panama, therefore English is not my first language. Sorry if there is any typo or grammatical error :(

Hi PD I'm Latino from Latinamerica and since you asked here's my imput: i think NCT Dream made a great Latin kpop song. Latin pop has all those elements: 1. spanish guitars and percusions (which are normal to any latin genre, from Bachata to Cuban "Son" to Southamerican Creole music, etc.), 2. the mumbling during the chorus is typical of reggaeton and im 99% sure that says "Menea pa' abajo" which is "shake it down low" in Spanish, also very common as an ad lib in reggaeton and Merengue. 3. The chants that NCT usually shout fits very well with this genre because latin pop music is usually party music and finally 4. the concept: is a Mexican taquería very familiar to latinamerican audiences (not every country has taquerías but local restaurants and markets are like that all over latam) and the chilly peppers (Capsicum Genus) used to make hot sauce are native to latinamerica, so it doesn't get more latino than that lol. I think they got the rythm very well and of course added the dubstep and hip hop elements typical of kpop. Great reaction, love your channel :D

I'm Mexican, I think definitely they went neutral for the sets and the sound: it's latino influence. I reeeeeeally like the way they design the "taco shop" we call it taqueria and actually is more like a fusion between that and a lonchería (it's a very Mexican thing and I think in other latino countries have that correct me if I'm wrong)
The "house/street/ set it's on poooooint and the thing they are saying in the chorus is 11:16 is "y que menea pa' abajo" that is kinda hard to translate but it's like "dropping it low" or "shake it down" like someone said in another comment and it's a real expression so definitely it's on point and the only thing that it's not accurate is the food. The tacos (they are soft and the weird thing they do in Taco Bell) and the hotdogs but in general it's accurate.
And at least to me it's not being stereotypical or offensive in any way. And de sauce maybe the got the inspo for the famous CHOLULA and that's as Mexican as my ass. it's from a state called Jalisco from a city with the same name.

  • @miuchantel
    @miuchantel 3 года назад +78

as a mexican born and raised in here, i could say that is totally creative the fusion that they went for like pd said, it doesn't sounds repetitive, the background and props they used in the mv are totally valid and not offensive in anyway to our culture, they kinda take inspiration in their own way and represented the latin vibe pretty good. also they used the 'taqueria' background and a house too in a very accurate way as an inspo cuz is the most common thing to ever see a taco shop or a house in that such a way as it show in the mv like here in mexico.
and the part of the chorus that maybe many ppl still doesn't notice is in spanish and im sure many comments in this section already explained the meaning but yes it says "menea para abajo y q menea para abajo" on loop wich means a way of dancing or more exactly like 'shake it down' 'shake it low'
the guys are doing great on this cb, please keep streaming and supporting them to make the boys get their 1st win as 7 members!!

in addition, i loved how they blended latin guitars with afrobeat rhythms and they even brought zimbabwean producers to work on the song.

The fact that NEO CULTURE TECHNOLOGY is the name of the group, that doesnt mean they want to add some twist to their music by adding latin influence, by which NCT is Culture-friendly kpop music

I moved to Texas when I was a just a year old, so I unfortunately don't know a whole lot about Latin and/or Hispanic culture but!! I genuinely do feel that Dream appreciated our culture and music rather than appropriated it (not that other groups do! BTS, for example, popped the hell off with Airplane pt 2). It's honestly incredible how k-pop just their own flare on Latin and Hispanic music while still being respectful. In terms of NCT Dream, yeah, there were some stereotypes, like hot sauce and spicy food, but they weren't glorified in a way that made it the entire theme, if that makes sense? They just used it a metaphor of love, which is creative as shit. Mad respect for that.
Not only the song, but the choreo goes HARD. The guitar, drums, kick, it all radiates the Hispanic vibes while still keeping it Korean, and more specifically NCT. The frantic movement in the chorus alone is so addicting to watch, it just makes you wanna dance along too. It really shows just how powerful our music can be. Hot Sauce SOTY material, this is not up for debate. 😌

    Hi mexican here!!
tbh i don't listen to mexican/hispanic music a lot, but hot sauce sounds like a song i would hear walking in the streets, specially Jeno's verse and of course the "menea para abajo" part, like played in stores and such, I feel like it really portraits the latin vibe in a good way

I am making a song as an assignment at school and tbh I was amazed when I listen to hot sauce teaser, cuz latin just suddenly came out of nowhere. I even have problem with mixing piano with violins or guitar in my song and they just have Afrobeat with latin together in one song. THAT IS VERY HARD YALL. one mistake then the song will sound really awkward, so praised to the music writers and nct 🙏
and tbh, the beat is really unique, I don't know what kind of instrument they use to make that.
aah hot sauce is the song that I was really surprised with dreamies, it is so nice, so unique, def a big step from dreamies uwu

Okay so as a Mexican I was very surprised with this concept and song. When I first heard the title "Hot Sauce" I honestly had nothing on mind since it's kinda weird lol but it is definitely related with the Mexican concept since most Mexicans love spicy food and it's a big part of our culture (even for those of us who can't really eat spicy food). Now the video is placed in a taquería (so yup technically a taco shop) as for the food Mark served...well you won't find that in a taquería in Mexico but it's fine, nothing too scandalous. There's also a part in the music video where Jisung is placing a box and right before we get to the hot sauce metorite you can see like a town background and idk the houses have a really Mexican feel to it. Then when the hot sauce metorite landed and we had Jeno and Mark in a desert as a background I liked the cacti detail but I would've liked it more if the cacti shown would've been either more species of cacti or the most representative one which is "Nopal" which is in our flag (we also eat it and it's delicious). Going back to the hot sauce Mexicans rather eat homemade hot sauces which is what you would find at a taquería but I'll let it go since bottled hot sauces are also wildly popular. That's it for the video.
As for the song... I think the song has a more Latin vibe to it than a Mexican one. Just to be precise for me there's a lot of Latin music that doesn't have borders across Latin America and there's also some regional music which is only found in a certain country. The latin sounds in the song are found in Mexican music but also (and maybe have their origin) in other Latin American countries. Latin music is quite rythmic and that's the element most kpop songs tend to go for when having a latin concept but I like that this song didn't only go that way adding some other interesting elements. The beginning sample which is also part of the drop in the chorus is someone saying something is spanish. On the second part of the first verse and specially throughout the pre-chorus the instrumentation with an acoustic guitar but just the whole feel of that section is very latin influenced.
Anyways... that's all I could figure out by just looking at the video and listening to the song. In my opinion it's done well with very minor details that are easy to overlook and well the song is a bop too.

so yeeeey it’s my time to shine as a latin/mexican fan! 🤩
ok out of jokes, yes I’m mexican (born and raised and lived my whole life here too) so I can explain a little about this. Sooo, yes, hot sauce has a strong latin music vibes and also mexican culture things. For the mexican cultures we can talk about they are dancing in a taqueria (which is the correct name of the taco shop) and they are in a very mexican “suburb” when they are outdoors and also mexico is well know for our huge salsa/sauce diversity. The cool thing here is they didn’t fell into stereotypes and I really appreciate it. Now, the music is very festive and colorful so yeah it has latin vibes thanks to the guitars and the rhythm but it also has an afrobeat (that’s what they described) and hip hop tones. And for the 11:12 it says *_menea para abajo_* on repeat, and we use that phrase when we are dancing. “menear” is something like shaking your body, and “para abajo” is literally go down, so we use it to say how low you can dance.
I hope this can help :)
and also thank you for your reaction. I love my boys being praised

As a Latina I very much enjoyed the Latin influence in this track! Latin music is stereotypically known for its romantic side like you mentioned but I REALLY enjoyed the twist nct dream added. It’s not your stereotypical style but you can still tell it was influenced by Latin music. And honestly its very refreshing. A lot of Kpop artists tend to take the safe way, usually just sticking to the romantic Latin spice, which can get a bit boring. And the mv set was really cool. Honestly it looked genuine. Reminded me of the market places in Latin America. Kudos to them and their team for not being so stereotypical! Really enjoyed this overall! Really funky👍🏼

As a Latina (I'm from Colombia) I DON'T feel offended, and no, I didn't see as offensive or stereotyped what is shown in the video, they made a great song putting there the Latin vibes, as a Latina and I can say that this song really has this authentic Latin vibe that it isn't even disrespectful in any way.
I do not understand, why always, Americans want to see cultural appropriation (or problems created by them) about a culture that is not even their own, they speak and assure that it is something "offensive" when it is not even about their culture (or when It's not even offensive), always creating unnecessary problems, I'm not saying it for PD, I say it because I've already come across a lot of comments or tweets from Americans accusing NCT boys of cultural appropriation when it's not even their culture.
