From what I learned from A Nightmare on Elm Street, you can't kill fear nor a being that feeds on fear. But you can refuse to surrender/give in to fear. Rendering that being powerless.
Actually you could say that Mithrax is also undergoing a transformation into Nezarec much like transforming into a vampire. A person becomes a werewolf temporarily while when someone turns into a vampire it depends on with show or series but it's usually a slow transformation that would turn the person into a full vampire... permentally, much like what is hapening to Mithrax. Edit - Also this season feels like it is a major in-universe vampire theme.
Another possibility is to reform/ reforge Nezzey. If he is influenced by thoughts there could be a possibility that changing the overarching perspective on his domains could change Nezzey into something more positive. For example if people started viewing fear and pain as evolutionary survival tools that could introduce survival to his domains, this probably wouldn't make him entirely good but while harsh he wouldn't be detrimental to those that envounter him.
I feel the only answer to defeat fear is to let it pass through like water. To not give in nor abide with it. Fear will always be there. Waiting, watching. But so long as we are akin to a watchman on the tower; to be prepared and strike fear back with silence and unconditional love (maybe with a trickle of pure Light), fear will be lessened enough where it won’t affect us much. Hopefully House of Light and us will get that solution at the end of this season.
I still stand by Nezarec being one of the best bosses they've made, both lore and gameplay. Nezarec during pantheon -20 was an amazing fight. Amazing voice acting during the encounter too. And lore wise he's just as interesting.
How do you defeat fear? - Ignorance: you can't be afraid of something you don't know exist. Looks like Savathun might be ahead of us with Imbaru. - Knowledge: Knowing how to deal with something makes it no longer scary. Of course, everybody would have to know. Much less feasible.
He doesn't exist because you don't believe in him. That's funny, because he believes in you. Ignorance leads to corruption, knowledge leads to damnation. Or something like that, from Warhammer 40k.
People also seem to forget that he is also evoked by pain... and pain manifests in more than just physical manners. Pain is evoked through mental and psychological traumas of history. The power of the guardians is hope. Hope for the future so that we can live a better tomorrow. Persist in spite of pain and fear in hope that the future will lift you up. That's all you can ever ask for when you exist, otherwise why live?
would really like to have a podcast to listen on the roads about d2 lore, its amazing how much you know about it and the time you spent to learn all this is amazing, good work
i saw a comment made in a d1 retrospective video i saw the other day: but they basically said that d1 was very much a sci fi game with fantasy elements, where as the further into d2 we go, we seem to be staunchly more in the fantasy realm that pulls in a little sci fi. These talking points about ancient beings becoming gods and turning into hard laws of the universe certainly aids that thought train xx
Say Byf would you be willing to make a video on the strategy game “Songs of Silence” when you have the time? It just released this week and I feel like it deserves all the attention it could get as it has the potential to be quite the classic setting beyond the one game.
It seems to me that nezarec can never truly die because he’s a concept but we can still defeat him. The only way you could defeat such a force is by sealing it away granted it would be difficult but here’s my idea. We recently just got a bunch of ahamkara eggs, so if we power them up we may be able to seal Nezarec away never to return. Granted it would take time, time Mithrax doesn’t have, so let’s hope Eido can find a better alternative.
I think you might be onto something with that thought of nezarec being supplied by the psions collectively. Another thing to note though is depending on how much change he went through to become a disciple, nezarec could still be a psion, just a dreadified one. Calus is the only one we can base this transformation off of though, and he didn’t actually stray too far from his original form.
I'd rather have him just take over the Dread. Having a single disciple try to be the next big bad who we've already killed following the Witness would be underwhleming. Maybe there could be more disciples we haven't met yet who come to Sol after the Witness's death?
Ngl it'd be SUPER cool to look at the "choose your own adventure" expansion as maybe we're choosing which version of fear to go after, like we need to hunt down the cult of nez, or we can work with citizens of the last city to help them feel safer, or many other things while completing the larger "goal"
I wish we get something actually scary regarding a new Nezerac design if he ever resurrects. I always thought he'd be some scary guy cause of the sick ass helmet and then he turned out to look like.... that.
given the concept art, we definitely could. The concept art showcases him with a massive cloak of resonance and a bald head (which actually makes it that more terrifying to look at). The sycthe looks more toned down but the sleek appearance they went for looks more appealing than what we got. He looks like a total badass.
It's a stretch but I think at some point in the episode we will delve into mithraxs mind and try to lock nezarec away. In plenty of fiction when someone has this overbearing presence or "second person" in the their head trying to take control usually through force of will they are able to lock that person away in a corner of their mind. I think this might be the case for nezarec, you can't kill him but you can contain him.
There is something else this episode provided that sounds interesting when talking about Concepts, in the Distributary, there is an Awoken named Nedhi from the Alethonym (True Name) who named everything in that universe and naming said concepts actually has given power or affect. There is a character from Bleach named Ichibe Hiyosube who is given the title of “one who speaks the true name” as he named everything in his dimension the Soul Society. I just thought that would be a little interesting lore.
Cant WAIT for what you have in store on the Monster Hunter stuff. Since a lot of its actual lore is QUITE obfuscated, and presented almost in an oral storytelling manner, your findings will be very interesting, especially when Wilds comes along (and all of its ties to MH4U if assumptions are correct)
Byf I genuinely think that you should be a character in the tower that new players can go to to learn about the lore, like an old Warlock or something.
Nezarec should also have something like a throne world if he can appear physically and spiritually. It may be possible to seal Nezarec. You can't fight fear... maybe that's also a reason why the Guardian was resurrected without memories or emotions from his old lives. Our Guardian is basically nothing more than a killing machine because we are basically an anomaly in the Destiny universe.
Regarding the Witness, Caital did say “the truest form of death is to be forgotten”. Which may well happen, when we eventually erase all trace of the Witness from the Traveler and greater universe. After all, the Greek gods didn’t die to a great calamity like Ragnarok. They “died” when they were forgotten by the Greeks, as paganism was replaced by Christianity and other religions. If we can kill his cult, and use darkness to erase the memory of him in the Mindscape, perhaps then, Nezarec will be truly dead.
The line from the Books of Sorrow where Ir Anuk and Ir Halak tell Oryx that they are trying to kill an axiom of the universe stuck out to me. Maybe if they need to kill a concept like Nezarec they might use hive magic
We have an exotic mission coming out in Act 3 apparently, I wonder if it will deal with Nezarec’s corruption of Mithrax and the consequences of it? Or maybe Fikrul? It’s weird to have both of these major villains involved in the story at the same time.
I really want Bungie to create a Expansion where it is Cosmic horror in play and how the story is built. Nezarec is a perfect Villain for that type of Campaign, and from the concept art and teases for Heresy, that theme might be used lightly or heavily, who knows.
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. Well, I mean, there was that lore.. I think it was in a lore book? The one that was a message from the Winnower directly to us (or the traveler, I can't remember) that basically said, "You took my knife... no matter, I have others." Or something to that effect. Nezzy might be one of those just as much as Savathun might have been, or a number of other ones. But they've been building this for a WHILE and I feel like Nezzy being the Big Bad(tm) makes a lot of sense. Basically filling in the shoes of what the witness left behind, maybe.
fear is a description of an emotion that we as humans encounter on a regular basis. how do we defeat fear? we need to look at our own perception of the universe and train out the emotional response of what we describe as "fear". how do we do that? I believe its different for each individual and is based on their own perception of what theyre afraid of. as a species thats so diverse, i believe its impossible to defeat fear as a concept and emotion. we must learn to use it to our advantage and accept it as something we cannot extinguish from life. just like the opposite of fear, we cannot extinguish courage or the feeling of pride in fighting for the land or people one believes in.
Note to be made : I’m late but based on twab of pantheon Nezerac is blueprint of rhulk which weird but the cutscenes of mithrax mother cut the corpse of Nezerac where the body very slim and skinny support this evidence
I’ve read some theories that, Nezrec behaves similarly to the Hive gods: killing him physically is not enough. We must erase him. In mind and soul. One of the supposed ways he keeps coming back don’t just “as long as fear exists he exists”, but more so, him being remembered. So, how do we end him? Erase the very memory of him. Some say, his conciseness persists in a higher plane. Not the Ascendent plane, but perhaps somewhere in the Mindscape Caital and the Psions mention. Perhaps killing him there, will erase the very memory of him across the universe. Ending him, and his existence, once and for all. But, I can see him being a great big bad for this new saga. Maybe even more than Savathun. We shall see.
I think it might actually be possible to erase nezerac from everyone's memories, after all the vex were nearly capable of this without paracausality in the vault of glass where Pahanin forgets all fireteam members "No one can open the Vault alone. I opened the Vault. There was no one with me but I was not alone."
nezarec is literally just a psionic space starfish, killing him is just like chopping off one of the arms of the starfish, and his psionic mental presence within others allows the time to grow that presence that was lost back
I believe nezarec’s continued presence to be the result of some kind of throne world like space, he is a being of strong will power and psionic might, it isn’t impossible for him to have a throne world I say the way we kill him for good is to find it. But that might be the least of our worries right now
Personally I am of the belief that he is not tied directly to nightmares but memory to *HIS* nightmare. Memory opens the door to corruption and nightmares and fear are his works of corruption. Honestly I think this is what makes him truly dangerous because now he is remembered by Guardians, we do not die as long as we have the light, he will stay with us as a shadow
I think Nezerac is the actual feeling of fear itself and the creature we fight is a physical form that allows fear to interact with the physical world.
Ik its random but the texture of nezeracs head in the thumbnail is so like, visible. Bruh I nedda mount that head on my wall as a trophy just cause it looks like itd be fun as like a coat hanger XD
Idk continuously killing him to the point where he doesn’t even see a point to coming back bc he knows no matter where he hides we’ll keep hunting him sounds like a good idea tbh. Make fear fear us. No matter where he is he’ll always be looking over his shoulder for orange, light blue, purple, dark blue, and green lights to run up on him
Nezarec feels like a cross between Freddy Kruger and the Shadow King. Pretty sure his real form is in the Astral plane of whatever psychic realm Psions have access to.
In my opinion, after the experience of The final shape and echoes, Nezarec seems to be the best chance for Bungie to make a comeback from the low of echoes. This is also an excellent chance for Bungie to experiment with a more stronger horror theme considering fear and pain which is what Nezarec is.
Yes nezerec most likely has something like a ghost that just keeps him alive so we have to destroy that or them first, or if we can’t officially kill nezerec, we may just have to imprison him forever
I almost wonder if the Final God of Pain is separate from Nezarec. The dialogue lines where Mithrax becomes enraged imply that the curse is affecting him more and more, but it doesn't seem like he's being possessed by Nezarec, but rather just rage. The question I'm curious about is if this is a possession of Mithrax's body by Nezarec, or if it's a possession of Mithrax's body by whatever raging and fear-inducing spirit that previously possessed Nezarec. Maybe Nezarec wasn't the first being to be possessed by this spirit, and was previously just a normal dude like Mithrax. Maybe this Final God of Pain is some infectious spirit that jumps from host to host.
Ive always thought if Nezarec is the embodiment of fear, what if there were a disciple that was the embodiment of rage, hatred, and anger. How would you kill anger itself?
Honestly I think we just have to keep meeting him with victory, we showed we can win with some difficulty right? So we keep fighting as we always have and lessen the influence he might have, if we keep prevailing it might be able to blur the line that ties him to fear itself
Perhaps with 2 wishes? 1) Kill all vessels containing Nezarec that will allow him to return to life. 2) Erase all our written knowledge and memories of Nezarec.
We actually did learn how Nezarac was created, it was revealed in the 5/23/2024 TWID based on his Pantheon profile. Quote "Created from Rhulk’s blueprint, Nezarec was the first Tormentor from which all others owe their lineage. Nezarec relishes in sowing fear and pain, feeding off the terror of sentient beings. He can induce nightmares across entire worlds."
Devs maybe made Nezarec with Japanese gods mythology, where one of the Gods dyeing he's resurrects if people believe in him, if there on any so he dyeing completely.
I guess some ways to permanently kill a returning God of Fear would be to either make him be forgotten as suggested with the Skira legend or introduce fear into the God of Fear himself and essentially elevating something else a new God of Fear. What is a god of fear worth it if they themselves are too afraid to move into action? Beyond just annihilating the God with Rocketlaunchers and Supers, there's certainly a permanent solution for a being that won't accept a permanent death. Change the legend. Kill him over and over and over again with more ridiculous ways so that you can't take the God of Fear serious. When the legend turns from fear into ridicule, no one's gonna take him serious and his powers probably go away too.
I wonder if Nezzy is stronger than the witness power wise. I feel like the only reason he wouldn’t be able to beat the witness it due to the many many minds inside of the witness.

Nezarec reminds me a lot of the chaos gods, at least potentially in how they are "gods"
nezarec is literally just a psionic space starfish, killing him is just like chopping off one of the arms of the starfish, and his psionic mental presence within others allows the time to grow that presence that was lost back
I believe nezarec’s continued presence to be the result of some kind of throne world like space, he is a being of strong will power and psionic might, it isn’t impossible for him to have a throne world I say the way we kill him for good is to find it.
No matter where he is he’ll always be looking over his shoulder for orange, light blue, purple, dark blue, and green lights to run up on him
How to banish fear: T E L E S T O
Nezarec feels like a cross between Freddy Kruger and the Shadow King. Pretty sure his real form is in the Astral plane of whatever psychic realm Psions have access to.
obv the way to beat fear is with a hope that burns eternal. and guardians are sure good at making a LOT of fire
I literally thought this was going to be about taniks
In my opinion, after the experience of The final shape and echoes, Nezarec seems to be the best chance for Bungie to make a comeback from the low of echoes.
This is also an excellent chance for Bungie to experiment with a more stronger horror theme considering fear and pain which is what Nezarec is.
Taniks is a vessel for Nezerec, that's how he keeps coming back 😂
Confirmed. We saw taniks in salvation’s edge as a taken
The Eliksni dealt with a similar creature before. Skira The Watcher.
Yes nezerec most likely has something like a ghost that just keeps him alive so we have to destroy that or them first, or if we can’t officially kill nezerec, we may just have to imprison him forever
Turn it into a weapon
I always thought Nez was just a psion forgetting his diet
My lord theory since the defeat of the Witness is that Nez would be the leader of the Dread.
You dont "beat" fear...you tickle it!
Ive always thought if Nezarec is the embodiment of fear, what if there were a disciple that was the embodiment of rage, hatred, and anger. How would you kill anger itself?
We use the power of will, which isn’t that what Stasis supposed to be?
Honestly I think we just have to keep meeting him with victory, we showed we can win with some difficulty right? So we keep fighting as we always have and lessen the influence he might have, if we keep prevailing it might be able to blur the line that ties him to fear itself
We call always call the “baba yega” himself. After-all he was the one you sent to kill the boogyman.
Byf and Monster Hunter? I need to hear your take on the lore behind Fatalis...
my personal theory is skira was either an aspect or child of nezarec
Bring him back but actually scary looking. Show us the fear aspect of his being.
Reminder that the name of the exotic mission is Kell’s Fall 🤔
Perhaps with 2 wishes? 1) Kill all vessels containing Nezarec that will allow him to return to life. 2) Erase all our written knowledge and memories of Nezarec.
Nezarec is basically a space version of pennywise minus the shape-shifting
So Nez is akin to a god that a Cleric can worship, but also a concept like how Wizards gain power from reading books (learning) lol. Nice.
The relics kinda give of Horcrux vibes from Harry Potter if this guy keeps coming back.
To defeat Nezzy, stop playing. :F
Challenge level: Impossible.
Bungo CEO: Hold my beer; I just bought another car.
Ive been talking about the potential for Skira to come back❤
I don't mean Skira is Nezarec. Skira is clearly different from Nezarec
from my understanding savathun's killing of nezarec was mostly a sneak atttack, unless i am misremembering
Bro...Nezzy original body didnt come from Rhulk. He's even ancient than Rhulk.
