- Haitian gang leader Jimmy Cherizier “Barbecue” said on Tuesday (March 5) the country would plunge into a “civil war that will end in genocide” if Prime Minister Ariel Henry remains in power.
Cherizier spoke in a press conference in the capital Port-au-Prince saying the federation that gathers Haitian gangs, Regroupement Vivre Ensemble, would fight to topple Henry and establish a new system in Haiti.
The 46-year-old Cherizier, alias "Barbeque," was formerly an officer of the Haitian National Police force. As a police officer, he is alleged by the United Nations to have played a role in multiple massacres, including the killing of over 70 people in 2018, when over 400 homes in the capital's La Saline neighbourhood were set on fire.
Haiti's Prime Minister Ariel Henry landed in Puerto Rico on Tuesday, as questions as to why he had not returned to his country swirled amid escalating gang violence.

France was the colonial power and forced Haitians to buy back their country with help from the US.
