Always nice to see Totaka's Song getting some love.
This needs the popularity it deserves
Sorry to say this, maybe you were recording to late in the night, but its kinda sad that sometimes the cardboard keys sound louder than the actual notes
To be honest that's a problem with a lot of keyboards not just the labo. Part of the joy of the labo is that if you wanted to you could DIY add something to soften the action of hitting a key or use different materials for things (like 3d printing parts instead of using cardboard). And regardless, it's a bad output but the switch has the aux output so if you want to record the sounds without any physical noise that's at least an option.
It actually created a nice beat
Yes he should have used the Audio out
i love it it's like a mechanical keyboard, so satisfying

Hey Thank you so much for this video! I made some of your wave cards and that make my life so much better bro!
Thanks for your comment! I saw your Duck Tales cover yesterday and thought I recognized a few of them :D
Thats right I used 4 of them to be more exact. good stuff! keep the good work bro!
So I just doubled the amount of cards on my blog from 9 to 18! Here's a video covering the process: ruclips.net/video/x34l0-_tB-A/видео.html I hope you can get some use out of them!
That's really cool and interesting. 20 years ago this would be a huge hit among the gaming community. Sucks it's just being experienced by such a select few
Im getting asmr from this, good lord
Now I want to see enough labos laid out next to each other to mimic a full keyboard range.
The cardboard sounds really asmrish
Now all we need is a 3D printed labo
As much as people hate on this it really does seem kinda cool.
Of course materials could be better or price could come down but you dont NEED to by one. Let the people who think they will enjoy one buy one.
I’m just imagining how long it took to make these... not print time but Development and designing
A very, very long time!
Why is this satisfing
hahaha, good job sneaking such a classic hidden song in :P. I bet a lot of ppl dont even know it :P

I think it's genius! I just made a followup video where I made cards based on SNES samples and vocal clips. I think I'm really pushing the limits of what Labo is capable of, but I'd love to see someone take it even further. Check out the video here! ruclips.net/video/x34l0-_tB-A/видео.html
it is, you can get a real electric Piano with all type of sounds from Clarinet to a Guitar for example, 100 or less for basic one , while this piece of cardboard cost 70$ lol.
Its a completely dumb idea, its not even a full keyboard.
I think this makes Labo an almost universal sampler synthesizer. I hope someone can pull off a live performance with it.
One of the U.S. late-night talk show bands did exactly that. I think it was The Tonight Show.
im pretty sure you will see it in the techno scene
I think you're right. So long as it's a periodic wave, you can make a card for it. I just uploaded a followup video on the subject where I made 9 more cards - this time sampling Super Nintendo instruments and vocal clips. Check it out! ruclips.net/video/x34l0-_tB-A/видео.html

You missed the point
Labo + a kit of cards is likely physically smaller than a MIDI keyboard and a laptop. A laptop or a tablet with the size of Switch would be equally underpowered - Switch is actually already pushing the power density and performance density envelope.

Technically, everything that produces sound which you perceive to be musical can be considered a musical instrument.
So fap noises are musical if it sounds musical to you.
Or at least you could sample it and use it in a sequencer, sampler or something.
This is so simple and cool idk why Nintendo don't make like a official page for doing things like this.
maybe cause they want us to discover things they didnt say anything about? nintendo likes to be creative, also likes to make people use their creativity.

People give the labo too much shit imo...I get it’s just cardboard, but that doesn’t degrade what it is and it’s quality. It’s a really versatile set of equipment that lets children build with their imaginations, and explore. That’s exactly what a child wants!
Edit: I will admit, 70$ pricing is a bit much, even for the labo and it’s uniqueness. Still, I don’t believe that it deserves so much hate for these things.
This video and its "sequel" that shows you how he made these (you actually don't need a 3D printer, a standard one may do just fine) made the Variety Kit all the more appealing to me. I'm thinking that about $50 of the whole price is actually going towards the software with the remaining $20 going to not just the cardboard, but the other crap that makes all the cardboard come together. There's some powerful magic in that IR camera.
most of the price is for the game itself that comes with it
I don't get why people keep saying that it's "$70 just for a bunch of cardboard"
That's also the price for the software itself and I think people forget that
And its cool how the coolest features a music program could have are made so much easier to use with labo.
Could you cut out silhouettes of famous people's face's and or recognizable objects and show us how they sound?
That doesn't really work because waveforms can't have multiple points on the Y-axis. Meaning everything has to be a continuous line going strictly from left-to-right.
but you can run a screenshot through the SpectroBits VST and even make a synth out of it
It would just be the line that outlines the face. Then orientate it facing up or down.
Max Powers this can be the new "beauty test" trend

Thanks for this. It's a useful point of reference, and I particularly appreciate you sharing the waveform cards on your blog.
Thanks for your comment! Since the reaction to this video was so strong, I made 9 more cards (using Super Nintendo instruments and speech samples). Here's a video about them: ruclips.net/video/x34l0-_tB-A/видео.html
And just like last time, you can download them all from my blog for free!
What, no wacky voice clips?
godwin972 no sampling huehuehue here mate
Looks like it only uploads single cycle waveforms. That said, depending on the fidelity of the waveform scanner, you could sample a complex waveform and then try playing it as low as possible.
Also depends on how precise the 3D printer is. I can’t imagine a cutout of even a simple one syllable word.

I don't think the switch would detect past a level of fidelity

Nathon Fleming the one that is an easter egg on almost all nintendo classic
If the composer Kazumi Totaka is listed on the credits, chances are it’s in the game. Pikmin, Luigi’s Mansion, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Smash Bros. - the list goes on.
That's from Mario Land. I think that's the first time we heard it.
Thanks so much! It takes a true Nintendo fan to recognize that one. I just uploaded another video on these cards that goes more in depth on how I actually made them, and of course, there are more Nintendo easter eggs in the mix. Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/x34l0-_tB-A/видео.html
You should print them thinner so that you can stack them to make completely new wave forms by simply combining new cards together . Also, start modeling and printing the piano piece so that you'll eventually have a complete 3d printed piano . This is what I'd do if I had Switch and a 3d printer .
This guy already started doing it . Maybe he'll give you thee .stl files .
ruclips.net/video/7BktUvMUQOE/видео.html
hed420 You replied to yourself.
That's an interesting idea. I'm printing them at 1.2mm thickness now, and it's a squeeze, but I can fit two of them into the slot at once. If you'd like to see how I actually make these cards, I just uploaded a new video detailing the process. Check it out here! ruclips.net/video/x34l0-_tB-A/видео.html
@@HunterIrving I'm not familiar with how they work, but I'd assume stacking them wouldn't be much different than just printing out the 2d waveform you get when you stack them. Or does it recognize all of them individually?
@@lotusauer4785 That's the idea. Being able to print out just a few different cards, then combine them into a bunch of different, more detailed waveforms, without having to print those ones out. Reduced material cost for more varied use.
The fact that you were able to make your keys even is beyond me
This gives an entirely new meaning to the word soundcard
This is so freaking cool. I had no idea. What I would love to see next is 3rd party midi controllers working with the Switch over Bluetooth. Labo doesn't seem so bad after all.

Simpleton: What software do you use to produce? Fl studios?
Mii: Nintendo labo
I'm so glad you did this, I was curious about how well something like this would work. If or when I get Labo, I wanted to try to cut out a wave form of speech or from a song and see how it is interpreted.
I watched some of those recently. I'm just curious about if you took an image of the waveform produced, even just a vowel sound, and were able to accurately reproduce it as a card, what would it sound like?
5.85987448205 a vowel can absolutely be rendered as a single cycle waveform. What do you mean by “perfect” vowel?
Oh you're in middle school? What do you mean you mean by "multiple sources"? A vowel can and has been rendered as a single cycle waveform. A vowel is recognized by vocal formants. Formants are certain areas of the frequency spectrum that are boosted or attenuated by a body such as the mouth or the body of a cello to name two examples. These formants are not dependent upon a sound source. To render a vowel you just need to sing a single note: "Ooh" or "Aah" would suffice. Pluck a single cycle from that sample and viola. Ask your teacher or whoever tried telling you that "a vowel can not be made perfectly into a wave" about my comment. They might've meant that you can't render evolving sounds (formant motion) with a single cycle.
Thanks so much for this comment! A lot of people asked if speech would be possible, so I made a video covering the topic! Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/x34l0-_tB-A/видео.html
Yeah that's true. Any polyphonic material is going to have complex phase interactions between the notes. If you were to try to chop a single cycle, you would lose that evolving phase interaction and be left with a static timbre.
EDIT: I guess I shouldn't say ANY polyphonic material... if you play notes that are part of the same harmonic series then you could actually render that chord as a single cycle waveform. Of course that's assuming the played timbre is some non evolving sound (like the basic analog waveforms). That is, even if you played harmonics with a guitar or a sound that changes over time, you would not be able to accurately represent that polyphonic material in a single cycle waveform. I can go into more details about how equal temperament would misaligning the phase of higher notes in the series (once you get to the third) but I'm not trying to write a book over here.
The whole time I was thinking "this is only big enough to play the theme of bach's 2 part invention in d minor" and then you did, and I through my hands up. It was like watching one of those "oddly satisfying" vids or seeing the dvd logo hit the corner of the screen.
Great minds think alike..?
Glad you enjoyed it! :D
Wow. I didnt know it could mimic different instruments on waveforms and such. How did you discover what sounds like what?
I'm assuming it's synthesized instruments. The power of synth is incredible.
They are basic waveforms, sine, saw, triangle, etcetera. The others are basic presets as far as I know.
Synthesizers are easy
he takes the basic wave form and then adds a reverb and other effects to the basic sound to make it sound like the real instrument
Great question, and one I got from a lot of people. It basically boils down to looking at waveforms on an oscilloscope and determining which sounds will work within LABO's limitations. Here's a followup video that covers the process from start to finish: ruclips.net/video/x34l0-_tB-A/видео.html
someone should sell 3d printed keys for the labo or something. ever since it released I keep thinking ill see people putting out 3d printed versions of the labo pinao and things so they are much longer lasting than cardboard.

Because the NES was a piece of shit, its triangle waves actually looks more like Aztec step pyaramids, with 16 steps. You should try to make that waveform!
Likely Warm Cabin ooo yeah
well try making something better with the resources that were avialable in the year 1983. Calling something piece of shit just because its old is something you shouldn't do.
Ramog1000 It was a term of endearment, I love that old thing. And anyway, I don't have to invent a better 80's computer: Commodore already did! It's only $500 more expensive, pocket change really :p
Tim Follin made good use of the triangle waves.
Likely Warm Cabin it's not a piece of shit, it was revolutionary for its time.
Okay Labo seemed like a dumb idea - at least the whole cardboard part of it - but THIS is AMAZING. I'm still not totally on board with carboard-everything, but I can definitely say that features like this are what makes Nintendo consoles the most innovative of their generations, and often some of the most fun and unique gaming experiences (even if they don't tend to boast the highest specs)
awsome!
This has always been the thing that's fascinated me the most about Nintendo Labo and is the reason why I wanted it, and honestly might buy it sometime. The fact that it can interpret cardboard cutouts as waveforms and seems to mostly be accurate with it is honestly amazing, and cutting out your own waveforms and trying to make them work well with Labo's limitations sounds like lots of fun, it's kinda like a soundchip.

how to use serum in nintendo
Wait, so I don't have a 3d printer but, can I make my own little things? Like cut them out of cardboard and paint them white?
nutter butter Yes you can, and you dont have to paint them white unless you really want them to be white. I should also add that if you want to get really complicated waveforms like the organ that he used, you're gonna have to be very precise with that. If all you have is cardboard and scissors, something like that organ will be very time consuming and may not come out exactly like you wanted (trust me, I've tried to make saxophone and flute cards with decent results).
nutter butter Easiest way to do it would be to print the waveform in a piece of paper, glue it on top of the cardboard, and carefully cut the shape with a cutter tool I guess, but yeah, it would work :)
You absolutely can! I have PDFs on my website that you can download and print onto cardstock. And Chase is right, it doesn't really have to be white.
