The "Dear God" commentary by his co-driver Terry Harryman at 1983 Manx rally must be another one mentioned. He was driwing on wet tarmac through some village roads and momentarily lost control of rear wheels, getting the control back in a second and then just pushed the gas pedal like nothing happened...
After watching this clip here's what you should reflect on: You've just witnessed an era of motorsport that will never come into existence again. Pikes Peak is now paved, and the triumph of the incredible engineers that created these cars that would've been thought an impossibility only a few years prior has influenced not only race cars of every type and surface, but also drastically advanced technology nearly over night that made the common car you may find in your own garage more powerful, durable, and reliable than ever believed possible. Now watch it one more time.

Sadly we have stronger and stronger cars but weaker and weaker drivers. Pepik Kubica is talented driver, the best, like Senna...yet he never achieved anything. There is something wrong :-D
David Hajes You speak the truth. Back in the 70's and 80's the drivers couldn't make mistakes, because if they did they were likely getting killed. A lot of the drivers weren't afraid of dying in the car and those were the drivers that won races. Safety requirements have really weighted the cars down, and modern drivers make a lot of mistakes, but thanks to group B the drivability of modern cars has substantially improved and instead of a mistake getting you killed, you only lose a few seconds in the race. So there's good and bad.

K31TH3R if you give a driver/racer a choice...what do you think they choose? *fastest and most deadly car*. Regulation bring boredom and mediocrity.
8 лет назад+7
even with regulation, most powerful teams cheat anyway - *regulation/laws bring corruption* only failure in Group B was long exhausting stages and crowd control...it just needed adjustment and there would be one of greatest sport on planet
David Hajes I agree with everything you said. A lot of people consider Group B "Too Fast to Race" (which is a great documentary about Group B if you haven't seen it BTW.) but the cars weren't the problem, the cars were fantastic. It was the idiots crowding around the track that killed Group B *and* killed people as well.
The older music gave a 'lightness' to the drivers attitude as the audience sees endless perils and danger along a drive that could take a life. It was also a juxtaposition having light music with dangerous visuals and reflected on the title of the film 'climb dance'...
Yeah, the original music was way better. Not like this 'reality show' "Let's get intense" nonsense. The new music detracts from the film. The original build a better suspense, and in a much more intelligent way.
Greatest rally video I've ever witnessed.. Sun in his eyes, driving on the literal edge of the mountain. WRC is the world's greatest Motorsport, bar none!!
Swapnil Jain wrc was, but has been deteriorating since 1999, its not worth watching anymore, i only watch the monte and tour de corse now, i was an addict to the group a cars.
This film was made from the footage taken during training. It doesn't show the real race weather. In 88 there was a hail storm over the last kilometers of the race so that the track was covered by a mix of ice and mud. Setting a new time record in this condition is an incredible achievement by Vatanen.
The best of THE best motosports video,EVER MADE!!!!I obey the creator of this video...GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER!!!!after so many years,I ebery time i see it i get completely CRAZY!!!it is the ONLY TIME I FEEL ALIVE!!!!!!!!
Walter Röhrl was the last man to race up the mountain while it was still only a gravel track. Comparing the times between 1987 and 1988, it just clarifies that Walter was an absolute animal behind the wheel of the Audi, being 0.5 of a second slower.
VIZIN and that vatanen in 87 in the 205 was hardly any slower and was leading for most of the 87 run despite the t16 being less powerful than the 5 pot audi, röhrl is an incredible driver, but he's a wanker too after what he said about Michelle mouton. vatanen, kankunen and the late henri torvinen were the best of the era.
tormen76 Walter röhrl said if the wrc was won by a woman it is nolonger worth winning. by that statement a broken boot lid hinge saved the wrc? by moutons boot lid flying off, taking the oil cooler with it (they were mounted under the rear spoiler on the boot lid). she was in a championship winning position when that happened too. she is a legend to motorsport and still the only woman to win at the an international event outright in motorsport. i want more attractive women at the highest level, there's plenty of women sitting on bonnets but I'd rather have women with women with go than just show. that why i got victoria pendletons autograph.

une pure merveille : superbe video .super pilote qui dompte la 405 t16 a la perfection en jouant avec la mort car la moindre erreur est fatale.encore bravo peugeot et ari.
I didn't realize until the film was over that I was watching Robby Unser (some of the time anyway). Robby is retired from racing now and is practicing massage in Albuquerque, NM. Look him up. He's as good an artist at what he does now as when he was driving.
He is credited in the film, but not by people who discuss it or post it here on youtube or other video hosting sites(see the description of the video).
pikes peak the real way ie no sealed road its all different now days, real drivers back in those days, and very different (ie hard and difficult to control cars in those days as well) the glory days of rally driving is long gone sadly!
This is an unedited version. The bug splat is within .02 seconds as are many of the transitions from inside to outside the car. The highest latency I see is 40ms. If you are looking at the gauges, it appears the sound was never on to begin with.
swigga4O hi mate. I'll dig it out tonight then let you know. All my dvd's are boxed up at the moment. I have two dvd's about rally but can't remember which of the two this is from. I think one was called too fast to race, or something like that. I will let you know for definite though tonight mate. I bought them from Halfords years back.
swigga4O Right then mate. I found em. Sheeesh! i'm knackered now, lol. My spare room has become like a store room, everything gets chucked in there now and then the door slammed firmly shut (outta sight, outta mind), lol. Its like a black-hole. I have two D,V,D's. One is called "The evolution of Rallying" and the other is called "Too fast to race" Now i am pretty damned sure its the Too fast to race dvd, seeing as how that one has a picture on the front cover of the car on the peak shown in this you-tube video. If i remember correctly, i actually used to own the Too fast to race film on video cassette first, and when i bought it on dvd, i was convinced the film had been shortened slightly. By a couple minutes. But yeah, this is on the "To fast to race" dvd. Maybe you can find a copy over on e-bay mate.
How how how could they take the original down because of music. I am heart broken, devastated! This has been my hype to get ready for PPIHC for so many years. Any links to the real would be most greatful!!!!!! Thanks
Car sounds are there, but music is different from what I thought was the original, as seen many years ago even before RUclips existed. Piano solo was/is amazing...
Pretty sure this was all Ari Vatanen driving in this video. Robby is mentioned at the end because this was a film commissioned by Peugeot, and Robby won Pikes Peak in 1989 while also driving a 405 T16.
Yes it is definitely Ari Vatanen hes 1 of the greatest Rally drivers ever and have you seen the Oh God video at the isle of man rally where Ari hits a wall at like 100 mph but somehow keeps control the man is a driving God
!!What The F@#$ did I just watch!!!! "1989" Ok GoPro, Ken Block, BJI drones, no matter what the F@#$ you do, you will never get to these level of perfection!!
It's important to remember that this was created with footage from 1988 with Ari Vatanen and 1989 with Robby Unser. Unser never gets any of the credit for his part when a good portion of the footage came from his performance.
I believe that the music in the beginning is from Prisoner tv series (2009) composed by Rupert Gregson Williams - The Ocean. Or it sounds exactly like it.
Also, I'd like to point out that this road is now paved with shoulders all the way to the summit. I'd give anything to run it in the old days with a proper (read: insane) Group B car.
The sunblocking move has to be one of the most iconic moments of motorsports ever captured on video.
How so ?
Indeed
Totally agree!
*casual display of powerlevel*

Basically at the edge of death for the whole run. Vatanen is a legend. That one-handed moment has to be in some future VR helmet rally game..
stobe187 which game
McMuffinFluffin DIRT Rally might work!
stobe187 thank you
when we have haptic gloves instead of steering wheels.... yum
Robby Unser also drove this, let's not forget him!
Man this guy have a titanium balls!!!!!One of best rally video i watched......This car is insanely brutal.
Fucking pure sound what a MACHINE I love being alive just to see this...
You'll never see drivers, cars or roads like this again. Enjoy what you're watching and savour it.
21st century kid, "Why does he keep taking his right hand off the wheel?"
Mr. Ari Vatanen the master behind the wheel
Wow! What a driver. What a car. What a course. Outstanding to all. Bravo! That was, indeed, a dance between driver, car, and mountain road. Beautiful.
There is just a unique beauty to the sound of that car downshifting and then upshifting
Most epic motorsports film ever made. Everytime is see I get goosebumps
Vassilis Koutouvalis what about Rendevous ruclips.net/video/zvDXlDxMnb4/видео.html

One of the greatest videos I've ever seen... Nothing like a Peugeot
i`ll sum it up. It doesn`t get any better than this for watching a master of machine at work. Pure talent and know fear !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The older music gave a 'lightness' to the drivers attitude as the audience sees endless perils and danger along a drive that could take a life. It was also a juxtaposition having light music with dangerous visuals and reflected on the title of the film 'climb dance'...
Fuck the music, GIVE ME ENGINE, INDUCTION AND EXHAUST NOISE!!!
the music was also used only in the intro and outro. it was not during the whole video, just as it is in this video.
Yeah, the original music was way better. Not like this 'reality show' "Let's get intense" nonsense. The new music detracts from the film. The original build a better suspense, and in a much more intelligent way.
Puting the hand to protect eyes from the sun. BALLS OF STEEL.
2:31 - 2:47 : the most sensational, outstanding and awesome shot in the history of motorsports. I could watch it over and over again...
Greatest rally video I've ever witnessed..

Pikes Peak has never been part of the WRC. Obviously the driver was though.
The best drive I've ever seen. If you know of a better one, I'd love to see it.
This film was made from the footage taken during training. It doesn't show the real race weather. This is easily seen at the start-line when you compare 1987 against 1988

No sounds were removed. This is the untouched, unedited version.
The intro and outro music was changed. The original was way better.

Que alucinante el vídeo, siempre que lo veo me deja con una sensación de adrenalina
Great short film of a great driver.
For sure on of the best productions I´ve seen. Awesome video, thanks!
The definition of classic.
Every time I'm driving and I have to block the sun with my hand, I remember this video
Back when Peugeot was tuff.
An epic clip becomes more EPIC when it's remastered.
Great film... Outstanding driving!

Love this video.
The day American drivers started to fear European drivers.
well they are able to turn left. (nascar)
In case they didn't get it one year earlier, were Walter Röhrl showed up with his Audi.
what? to be chmp in F1 or WRC you have to go to the Europe...honestly....
Always makes me grin when I think of Michele saying she got out of rallying when they banned Group B. It just was no longer interesting to her!
This and manual transmission.
The Block gymkhana videos probably took inspiration from films like this.

Why no original music? What is exactly the story of this "remaster" version? Actually remastered from an original film copy or what?
always liked the turbo lover version but hey always interested in this one :O
