That’s ironic, my city hall just raised everyone’s water bill $3 in order to punish the 3-4 people who aren’t following the water shortage rules with their sprinklers.
It’s getting old doing the right thing the way it’s supposed to be done and getting punished for the ones who are not doing so.
Some people need to be reminded that fines are for people not following the rules. If you fine (ahem, "raise the fees for") the people following the rules, you add incentive to not bother.

I love the fact that as you were talking about HOA inspectors, you were running over fences and two large planters. "These picket fences are not up to HOA standards, so we shall remove them at your expense with heavy equipment. Also, begonias are not to be planted here! Little Timmy Patterson is allergic and now you must all suffer!"
Raising the fees of the people that do pay to cover those that don't seems like a good way to increase the number of people not paying their fee.

I know there was probably something said that got cut out but this still made me laugh.
The American HOA system is so alien to me that I cannot fathom how it came to exist. Personally, I'd rather pay taxes for municipal services than arbitrary fees to an HOA. Were I ever to move to an area with one, there is a zero percent chance of me ever complying with any of their nonsense, or committing myself to be governed by their regulations. I would rather spend my time and money working to destroy it.
Here in Oz we have shire councils that set charges for such things as garbage collection, sewerage, street cleaning, etc.
The fees where I am are only about $3000.00 a year, there are no meetings we are required to attend and we can do pretty much as we like as long as neighbours don't complain. The council can be depended on for such things as floodwater mitigation, assistance in controlling noxious plants and animals, cropping dangerous trees, road maintenance, playground upkeep and controlling savage animals.
I think you should adopt our system.

HOAs are, in theory, a good idea. They help assure that you don't have that one house that makes everyone else's property value drop and are more effective at remedying issues than most cities. The problem arises when bored housewives and retirees start passing nonsense like "you can't have your trash cans on the curb past 5pm on trash collection day" and "houses can only be a set number of colors" because they become mad with power.

While I'm not a fan of HOA, to me sounds like you and those who did pay have a case to sue the HOA over. Possible discrimination against those who pay but I'm sure if you look at your contract those who didn't pay breached their contract. And the HOA is not following procedures. Furthermore, I would request those who didn't pay through the freedom of information act if needed. Maybe some of them are on the HOA board themselves and that's why they won't hold the 40% accountable for their dues. Just a thought. Keep up the amazing content
