- WELCOME TO VOGTLAND OUTDOORS !
IF you're planning on the DIY-ing your own 1998 (or similar) BMW Z3 Top, know this:
1. It ABSOLUTELY CAN BE DONE, and done WELL as a DIY project;
2. It requires surprisingly FEW tools - ZERO specialty tools;
3. It CAN be done in a DRIVEWAY;
4. It WILL take just over 2 WEEKENDS (Saturday & Sunday half-days);
5. You WILL be tested for patience, diligence and attention-to-detail;
6. You absolutely CAN buy a cheaper $185 top instead of a$400, $500 or $650 top;
7. You WILL feel VERY VERY SATISFIED with yourself (I did)
THERE ARE 2 OTHER VIDEOS YOU NEED TO DISPLAY IN 2 SEPARATE TABS AS YOU WORK:
1. • BMW Z3 Convertible Top... MUST-HAVE VIDEO !!!
2. • 1998 BMW Z3 Convertibl... THIS GUY FOLLOWED the 1ST VIDEO
3. MY OWN video as an UN-CUT (on purpose) supplement to #1 & #2023
BEST APPROACH TO A SUCCESSFUL DIY PROJECT:
1. WATCH "MAINE JASON" video from start to finish at least 3 times;
2. PREPARE your equipment (lay out no less than 2 tables, and better if you have 3)
3. WATCH MY video 1 time - while you're DOING SOMETHING ELSE - to get a feel for it;
4. START YOUR PROJECT LIKE THIS:
a. WATCH only ONE STEP in JASON'S VIDEO;
b. WATCH MY SAME STEP to see if I've added/changed/improved anything;
c. PERFORM the step
d. REPEAT
IF you take your time you will:
A. have the top OFF in your first Saturday afternoon;
B. have the FRAMEWORK ready to start installing your canvas by your first Sunday afternoon;
C. NEARLY have the canvas entirely installed by your NEXT Saturday AND Sunday; BUT
D. You will STRETCH YOUR CANVAS for a WHOLE WEEK before completing the project;
E. Your 3rd Saturday will only be about 2 hours, but with the canvas ALREADY STRETCHED,
it will go a lot easier
HOPE MY OWN "UN-CUT", no bullshit, don't-hide-anything video will be useful to you all !

Great job Mark, your videos helped fill in some blanks. I'm close to done.
dont take this the wrong way, but im pretty much convinved that you're my spirit animal. (or spirit human, in this case). i did actually sit thru the whole video, and i was right there with you feeling every single pain in the ass, (and neck, and back) unnecesarily overly-complicated, bull-shit aspect of this replacement. at one point, when i think i was maybe 50% paying attention and 50% struggling to unbend that one tension cable bracket that my kit sent me the wrong one of (yep, 2 lefts, no rights), and my boyfriend just started laughing because we both let out the same sigh of exasperation followed shortly by a well-deserved cheer of victory, and it was eerily in sync lol. long tory short, it was very refreshing acually seeing someone show a more realistic process that i can really relate to. Thank you!!
Jesus. At first I was confident I could do this, but now...not so sure.
When you install the faceplate on the header bow, are you putting the screws through the fabric?
