Thanks for your nice video, iam intersted in a voice recorder mainly for voice, less for videos with Bluetooth as an important feature to hear files through wireless connection.
Having more or less experience with half the lineup (H1, H2, H4, H5, H6), I like the color display on the H6, because it shows way more information. The H5 is bit more handy, not like the boxy H6, but any Zoom offered decent one-hand operation. On the other hand, for both you need the cable remote (worth any cent!) to prevent click noises (while the buttons on the old H2 and H4 had questionable haptics) during recording when enabling/disabling channels, which can be annoying when using them as a camcorder interface.

Thanks great video Christian! I had a question - would it be recommended to use the 'line out' on the Zoom H5 and plug that into the camera's Mic Input? How much would this affect the sound quality (as I imagine there would be some processing at the camera end from the incoming output from the recorder) ? The reason I want to do this is to save me time from having to separately sync the audio from the recorder with the video later. I know there might not be a straight forward answer because different cameras may yield different results (some cameras have more sensitive mic input levels etc).
Hi there. I have tried this exact thing with my Zoom H5 and Canon EOS R camera. The file from the H5 does sound a bit more open and a bit less noise, but for many people the camera recording will be good enough, because as you said, it saves you an extra step in editing. It all depends on how much of an audio perfectionist you are, if you are listening carefully on higher quality equipment or not.
Hi. So the answer isn't quite straightforward, and depends on a number of factors. Generally speaking, the more stuff you run a signal through, the more the quality is degraded, or the more noise is introduced. I always just sync stuff in post production, so I've never run Zoom audio through my DSLR. Obviously you can do it, but generally speaking, on high end productions, they record the audio separately, and then they sync it in post. That's why they read out which scene and take it is, and they audibly clap, so that they know which audio belongs where, and so that they can sync it using the clap. If you do want to run the audio through the camera, how much this will impact the audio depends on the pre-amps of the camera, which are usually not going to be that good. They're there just to provide you with a reference to sync to. With that in mind, it's worth trying out, and checking the difference for yourself. I hope this helps :)

Thank you for making this video. It’s a pleasure to listen to your calm and clear voice :) just wondering, if I switch the “hold” switch after starting the recording on both H5 or H6, would that prevent from accidentally changing the volume levels, pause, stop the recording. Was explained that the H5 has that bar in order to prevent any accidental changes and that the H6 doesn’t have such a good protection. Just wondering if the “hold” switch can help in this regards.
Thanks for posting this Christian. I need to get a recorder now, but my hesitation is not between H5 or H6. It is the fact they both have been in the market for many years. H5 was released in Jan 2014, and H6 six months before H5. While the microphone technology may not has changed much, electronics has advanced so much. Zoom released an F2 just recently but for very different purpose. H8 is new but way beyond my need. Should we expect a refreshed H5 and/or H6, or replacement(s)/successor(s) for them in the near horizon? Or just bite the bullet and get an H5 knowing it has been in the market for 7 years? (H4N actually would also meet my need as I do not foresee replacing the module, but it is 12 yrs old design.) Please advise.
Audio devices don't advance quite at the same speed as cameras, for example. A 12 year old DSLR would be looked down upon, but a 12 year old audio recording device will work great even now. I have the H8, and will actually review it soon, but if it's too much for your purposes, the H5 will serve you well :) I think the H8 was meant to be a replacement for the H5 and H6, so it'll probably be a few years until a new model.
Hi! Do you happen to know if Zoom H5 works directly connected with an iPhone with the proper adapters, of course? With H1 I get that message about the device using too much power and need some workaround with a powered HUB...
Both have an an extra mode for either battery- or USB-powered Operation as a sound interface, but the USB-lightning-adapter support might be picky concerning the minimum IOS-version.
Hello Christian - I first viewed this video about 3 months ago and subscribed to you then but not ready to purchase. I am now in the market for either the H5 or the H6. Apart from the obvious differences like number of inputs, it is the self noise I am more concerned about. Is the H6 the flagship for audio quality? - The reason I am so concerned 6 months ago - due to money constraints purchasing a nice camera and a couple of lenses - my meagre audio budget cornered me into a Zoom F1 with their shotgun mic. Anything above level 7 was/is a disaster. I recently did an interview and the subject could be no further away than 8" away at an input gain of 7 for a -12db recording. Recording at input gain lower to 5 and boosting in post also boosted the noise. Your advice would be much appreciated. Peter.
This reading put me to sleep. It's not about Zoom, it's about "close your eyes, do you see sheeps?, relax, take a deep breath". You care much more about your reading, than the subject. Enjoy your voice. it's beautiful, you're beautiful, your voice is beautiful, you have great body. Good night......................
Thank you for this wonderful video. I'm a musician and I would like to know which hand recorder has the best preamps, the ability to act as an audio interface when connected to a computer and sound quality. Would you say the Sony recorder you mentioned in your video would hit all those marks?
I have used both the H6 and H8 as an audio interface. Both provide satisfying results and adequate gain for the notoriously gain-hungry SM7B. The preamps on the H8 might be slightly better. The H8 also has a touch screen, is easier to navigate, and has effect options (e.g., limiter, compressor) that can be input-specific ; however, the unit is bulkier and feels more plasticy than my original H6 (an "all black" [??] version is currently sold).
Does anybody know why the H5 has bars across it when the H6 doesn't? I know the bars are on the H5 to stop the dials from being moved accidentally but why not on the H6 as well?
Good question. It doesn't have the bars, but it does have a system in place to prevent you from accidentally changing it, and that is the bits of plastic around the inputs knobs (towards the outside). That does provide some level of protection from that 🤔
Excellent reviews. I am looking to upgrade my H4n (non-pro) so this was really helpful. Actually the h5 has better battery life than the h6. The reason is that the h5 does 15 on 2 AA while h6 gives 20 h on 4 AA. So if one do not need to record for 20 hours continuosly, just swap out the 2 AA batteries on the h5 and you are good for 30 h. 😊
@@morale6014 I did. I like it a lot. I made an 8 hour e-learning course with it and a CAD Audio M179. It worked very well and the files where nice and clean for editing in Audacity.
The most famous podcast mic I'd say is the Shure SM7B, which is what I use. The mic itself does not use phantom power, but if you get a Cloudlifter, to boost the signal, which is recommended, phantom power is needed for that. Here's my current audio recording setup: kit.co/Chris.Skyes/relaxing-audio-recording
I've generally heard more handling noise complaints about the H6, rather than the H5. I usually recommend getting a Rycote kit, which includes a shockmount, grip, and windshield. This basically eliminates handling noise all-together. You can view them here: kit.co/Chris.Skyes/should-you-buy-the-zoom-h5-or-the-h6
Any XLR recorder was able to provide phantom power, so far, some of them even with different voltages, sometimes done pairwise (which should be no problem when mixing condensors an dynamic mics) Also, the 3,5mm plug on the XY-capsule can provide selectable plugin power (about 2V for e.g. a lavalier mic)

@@christianskyes all I can say without that cloudfilter just already 100% pleasing and none of mine noticing any weird noise or ect, so here I came to ask and wondering about ur devices hahaha hey chris, im a new to learn audio, I love to filming random moment as a cinematic result and I need a better handy recorder for any fooley or recording ambience sound like crowd talking and sound of seashore ambience for making the videos more alive. in this case, does the H5+deadcat would enough for great quality result ?
The Tascam can give some pretty clean results, though do bear in mind that the music can mask some of the hiss that is there because of the lack of a Cloudlifter :) A Zoom H5 + deadcat would get you great results, as long as what you're recording is relatively loud. If you want to record super quiet stuff, The Zoom H5 (or H4n and H6) will struggle, and you'll get somewhat hissy recordings. I'd recommend you get a Rycote kit with it as well, which also includes a quality windshield. The kit comes with a grip and shockmount, which also removes handling noise when you're recording. You can view the kit here: kit.co/Chris.Skyes/should-you-buy-the-zoom-h5-or-the-h6
thankyouuu for detailed tips chris and the provided link, definitely will see it ! I saw a package a deadcat included called APH-6 made by zoom i guess ? do you think that's will be the same result quality with Rycote ? im shoot as one man band , holding the grip in the otherhand would be hard for me to control camera 😅 and im usually bring only a small sling bag go anywhere, what if I attached on top of my camera cage or hide it on my bag and pointing out the mic on H5 from my bag instead ? will it produce any annoying sound chris ?
I know the package you mean, but I've never tried it unfortunately. Bear in mind that even the best deadcat will still let some wind pass if it's super windy outside. There's only so much they can do. You can definitely place the Zoom on your camera, though you'd need to buy a separate mount for that. Shouldn't be too expensive, but again, handling noise might still make it into the recording, so you need to bear that in mind. You probably can find a way to mount a small shockmount in-between the camera and recorder. If you place the H5 in your bag, and you don't have any other microphone attached to it, the recording will be unusable, as the X/Y mic on the top of it will rub on the inside of the backpack.
Commercials DURING the video? Noooo!!!!! It ruins the flow. Plus I re-listen at bed time to fall asleep and the commercial will shock me awake! LOL! Better a commercial before and after. Agree you should defo do audiobooks as well! The universe gifted you with a beautiful voice and your calm energy is tangible:) not to mention the great review!
im planning to purchase this, thanks for the great tips and review of H5 chris !
subscribed !
anyway which audio devices that you use for ur own voiceover in this video ?
sounds really clear and pleasing quality !
No worries at all, glad you enjoyed it :) You can view my audio recording setup here: kit.co/Chris.Skyes/relaxing-audio-recording
I think this one was recorded a little while back though, I didn't have a Cloudlifter yet, and it was recorded with a Tascam DR-60D mkII, instead of the Native Instruments interface.
@@christianskyes all I can say without that cloudfilter just already 100% pleasing and none of mine noticing any weird noise or ect, so here I came to ask and wondering about ur devices hahaha
hey chris, im a new to learn audio,
I love to filming random moment as a cinematic result and I need a better handy recorder for any fooley or recording ambience sound like crowd talking and sound of seashore ambience for making the videos more alive.
in this case, does the H5+deadcat would enough for great quality result ?
The Tascam can give some pretty clean results, though do bear in mind that the music can mask some of the hiss that is there because of the lack of a Cloudlifter :)
A Zoom H5 + deadcat would get you great results, as long as what you're recording is relatively loud.
I saw a package a deadcat included called APH-6 made by zoom i guess ?
do you think that's will be the same result quality with Rycote ?
im shoot as one man band , holding the grip in the otherhand would be hard for me to control camera 😅 and im usually bring only a small sling bag go anywhere,
what if I attached on top of my camera cage or hide it on my bag and pointing out the mic on H5 from my bag instead ?
will it produce any annoying sound chris ?
Cool how is the h6
for sound effects
What an insanely well made video
Thanks, glad you liked it :D
I find these videos hard to watch.
I find the the great video can sound quality too distracting from the information.
Christian so many thanks !! for your amazing and rigorous explanations..Such a lovely voice indeed :-))

Thanks a lot, glad you liked it!
This is like watching discovery channel….but it misses
I have Zoom H5 on the outer body we could see some sticky ness happening
I've heard that that might be an issue.
Commercials DURING the video? Noooo!!!!! It ruins the flow. Plus I re-listen at bed time to fall asleep and the commercial will shock me awake! LOL! Better a commercial before and after. The music and voiceover environment during the video, to me, is ruined with a commercial in the middle. That said, please don't make us wait many months before another video come from you!
That's why I have the meditation video channel now :D No ads in the middle on there at all. In fact, no ads at all for the time being.
@@christianskyes Oh, ok. That is an excellent trade! :) Clever! :)
Hahah!! I was eating dinner while watching on my laptop...and when he said "....since a lot of you seem to like my voice..." I laughed out and said "I'll be he was talking to me!!!!" (because I'm always posting over and over how perfect his voice is as a voice-over guy! Well....time for me to now check out your meditation channel.......PS: I'll bet you can read a cook book recipe and people would listen to the entire thing! LOL!
Ha, I actually was!
Christian Skyes I feel like I won something! LOL! Thank you! The persistence and increased volume of content should pay off soon. Great work! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Excellent all the way around.
Thank you kindly!

You got it buddy.

I can run my zoom h5 for days using external battery pack lol
That's also another way to do it 👍
lol...I do like his voice......
Too much emotional and tragicsl video style. It would be better if you would use an upbeat song faster and more excitement.
This comment is tragic.
So... just... make a video that make sense to you.
