Thank you for this! I watched your H6 review and the comparison between this and the H5 a few weeks back when i was deciding to buy either the H5 or the H6 for a "no budget" short film project and i decided on the H6, but the old one is basically no longer exist in my country so i purchased the all black edition a few days ago. I don't need the other mic capsule but a carrying protective case of some sort is definitely needed (like the plastic case that came with the H5) and a third party option cost too much, especially on a budget while also trying to get other equipment. After a few days of searching, i found this semi hard case called Telesin hard case that was originally intended for action cam carrying case but the length is perfect for the H6. It's a bit too wide but you get this adjustable compartment splitter so you can modify it to tightly fit the H6. If any of you reading this deciding to get the H6 black, i highly recommend this one and it only cost around $15 (you can get it cheaper if you look around). I did found another case that better fit the H6 from aliexpress with cheaper price but shipping takes way too long and i needed the case immediately. Thank you!
Thanks, and I hope the video was helpful :) Yeah, the older grey model from 2013 is indeed harder to find, as I believe it is discontinued. Thank you for the tip on the Telesin hard case, I'll look out for it 🤔
I bought used H6 for half of their price (minus the plastic Case but I got SGH-6 instead of MSH-6) and I really love it. I use H6 for recording ambiences, as interfaces, and a lot. They have an issue in Overdub but it doesn't matter for me since I don't use it so much. What an amazing thing of this device : Battery Life, it's just so Incredible that this device can hold up until about 20 hours of use. I use it almost 2 weeks and never change the battery. Anyway, amazing review sir!
If anyone is wondering, Zoom’s customer service is great. My original H6 got super sticky when the coating on it broke down. I sent back the unit and they sent me a new H6 Black in box so I still have all my original H6 stuff plus the new black edition.
The Dealbreakers for me trying the H6: 1. XLR line input volume resetting itself to zero occasionally when powering it back on 2. Lack of XLR push-locks to secure cables from slipping out especially if using phantom power 3. Ridiculously loose volume dials - constantly having to check they haven't been knocked
This is a fantastic video in every way! I currently have a very old H6. It’s been my workhorse since the H6 first came out. It’s been dropped many times and has been taped back together. It still works. Question for you - do you think the H8 has a lower noise floor? Does it seem to have any more gain than the H6? I’m torn between buying a new h6 or an h8. Again, very good work on this video and thank you!
WARNING TO MUSICIANS: I purchased the Zoom H6, thinking that it was capable of doing multi-track recording using only the X/Y capsules (AKA overdubbing), much like the H5 (and, I presume, the H4N Pro). In truth, for the H6, you are forced to record overdubbing tracks on a new channel every single time. Which means you need to bring an external microphone/XLR cable to overdub, in addition to the H6. As a musician seeking a method to record overdubbed tracks on-the-go, this reduces the portability drastically. It's an extra shame, since overdubbing using only the X/Y capsule on the H5 is possible (though finicky), I expected the H6 to be capable of the same, but this isn't true.
@@CookinBeatloaf The XY can't do overdubbing at all last time I checked. I'm not sure if it's changed with a recent update. I went with the Portacapture x8 from Tascam.
Nice video, and I appreciate that you speak positively of the H6 when in many circles it is considered obsolete and noisy. I have used an H6 for 2 years, having had Tascam recorders prior, and I like the H6. The SSH-6 stereo shotgun is a favorite capsule of mine in church work, but I'd like to point out that your assertion about reflections isn't exactly right. Shotgun mics rely on their interference tube (the physical shaft) to cancel reflections, but this can be frequency specific. Shotguns are susceptible to some reflection interference from the sides (though they're good at canceling most of it) and from the rear (since hypercardioids have a tail of sensitivity). So, shotguns aren't very good in reverberant spaces that have lots of hard surfaces and untreated reflection hotspots. You can get away with them inside rooms with lots of soft surfaces to absorb sound -- and this includes the bodies of the audience/participants/crew! So invite a lot of self-ambulatory sound deadening (serving snacks can help, lol).
@@scourneene There is a detectable noise floor on the H6, just like on other small Zoom and Tascam recorders. However, in my experience, it isn’t a problem for most people most of the time. The small Zoom and Tascam devices are not the ones you want for super quiet recording like I-want-to-capture-the-whisper-of-the-breeze-through-my-lawn. Nice review. I was thinking of upping my game soon from my Zoom H1n to an H5 or H6, but I'll probably hold off and get the upcoming Tascam Porta Capture X8 instead. Looks really nice and according to reviews it's got much quieter pre-amps than the Zoom handhelds. I must admit though, I do love the microphone add-on range for the Zooms. Very versatile and compact for the casual/hobby recordist like myself, who doesn't really want to haul around huge bags of kit.
Thanks :) The Tascam Porta Capture X8 sure looks interesting, though I haven't had the chance to test it out yet 🤔 Yeah, I'd say that's one of the biggest selling points of the higher end Zoom handheld devices, it's all of the capsules you can attach to them 👍

This is just the best review of the H6 since your last one. So thanks for it. After months and months of research and now that I bought a camera to shoot videos (Fuji xt4), I'm seriously looking into audio because it's important to me. I know nothing about sound though. My main goal is absolutely not ASMR, but I would like to record voice overs and clean and crisp cooking sounds and maybe outdoors in the future. Do you you think the Zoom h6 + the shotgun would be a good match or/and should I pair it with something like the Rode NTG for more versatility with my camera instead of the Zoom shotgun? Also, out of curiosity, is it possible in any way to record stereo cooking sounds i.e frying food going left and right in the pan or is this done post? Thanks a lot if you can answer.
Thanks, I'm glad you like it :) The answer does depend on how you want to shoot. If you want a stereo image of the cooking sounds, you could just get a Zoom H4n Pro, and place it on a stand in front of the pan, or above it. When recording with the built-in X/Y mic, you'll get a stereo image of the sound. So if you tap the pan on the left, you'll hear that sound coming from the left. If you do this, remember to press record on both the Zoom, and the camera, and then do a few claps, or snap your fingers a few times. You can then use that sound to sync the sound from the camera, to that of the Zoom. Does this make sense so far? Mounting the recorder on the camera can cause issues, such as handling noise making it into the recording. Plus, if you're using the built-in mics on the recorder, you're likely to hear some of the camera operator's breathing. If a stereo image of the cooking is a must, a shotgun mic won't help, as it records in mono, and that's better for dialogue, sound effects, etc. If you want to do the cooking recordings now, and the interviews later, probably get the H5 or H6. Use the X/Y capsule that comes with it for the stereo recordings, and then if you want to do interviews later, you can either get the SGH-6 capsule, or an external mic. I've used the Rode NTG-2 on quite a few occasions over the years, and I quite like it. I hope this helps clarify things? :)
@@christianskyes thanks a lot Chris for this answer, it's clearer now. The stereo isn't a must. I want to film myself cooking and integrating other things in videos (still a concept I'm working on) so I'll be the only operator in front and back of the camera and for the voice overs. I'm still studying the possibilities and the more I think about it the more the stereo recording of the food becomes hard/impossible because as I understand from your answer, the XY capsule need to be close to the sound source to better capture the stereo image, which means it's gonna be in frame. So the shotgun makes more sense unless I shoot a first time, then record sounds independently which would make the process harder and far from the "just do it". Also, I really appreciate your voice in every video. Just discovered your meditation channel. Are you planning on doing a video on how to get such a good recording and how to do the post treatment to have an even better sounding voice (without being fake of course)?

Hi, so if I were to record a nature walk with the H6, what would you recommend for capsule? I've been told something like the Audio-Technica AT875R would be good, but I really don't want to have a rig setup with both the H6 AND an external mic if one of the capsules will do a decent job. This is for my first trip doing field recording as a hobby, so I don't need to be high-end professional to start, but I also want a fit for purpose capsule. Thanks so much for your incredible videos / guides / reviews! :)

Great work sir. I was pricing out the sm7b cloudlifter audio interface for part time voiceover route but this h6 plus the shotgun mic and doing post seems so much easier. Would you mind sharing ballpark setting levels for inside voiceover work? Thanks again
I normally have the SGH-6 set around 6-7 in terms of gain, with the mic quite close to me. Wouldn't really want to push it past that, as it might get noisy.
Thanks for the review! I got a question - by saying it would not be your choice for quiet ambient sounds did for mean that Zoom microphones are noisy OR it's the issue with the self-noise of the device itself (preamps)? Because I'm thinking of getting one to use external XLR mics (stereo pair of small diaphragm condensers for example), but afraid those preamps would not be a great fit even for good and not so noisy XLR mics.
It's the preamps. With handheld devices, they all have somewhat noisy preamps, with the exception of the Sony PCM-D100. The Sony doesn't have XLR inputs though, and now that it's discontinued, the prices have shot up quite a bit unfortunately 🤔
@@evenaicantfigurethisout Not sure really. Nothing that's handheld really comes close to the PCM-D100. It seems to be discontinued now, so they go for quite a bit on eBay.

I'm not talking about overdubbing I just need the track to be able to be referenced while recording. Can anyone help me or lead me to a very specific and good english video that shows how?
Excellent review. A work around for no phantom power to the EXH-6 XLR connections is to use portable battery powered phantom power devices. Rolls makes them. Zoom did their homework on the H6. WiFi would be a great addition for viewing the display on an iPad or iPhone. Even if it didn’t allow remote adjustments, it would be a great way to monitor the levels. If GoPro can do it, why can’t Zoom?
Thanks :) Clever idea in regards to the use of portable battery powered phantom power devices 🤔 That's a great point, WiFi would indeed be a great addition, so I can view the display on my phone! One can hope.

Thanks - really helpful, detailed video. I have one question, from ignorance. I'll be recording singing voice with an external mic (Røde NT1) into an XLR input on the H6, then uploading the wav file onto my iMac at home. Is there anything to be gained (in terms of quality of recording) from using an audio interface e.g. FocusRite Scarlett between the mic and the H6? I mean in terms of adding good pre-amps to the chain? I've seen one video review that used this as a set-up: mic to Scarlett to H6.
To my knowledge it does not, but you could always use the remote? I tried saying it in the US pronunciation just now, CapSuhl, and it sounds do weird 😂

If you want a stereo image of the cooking sounds, you could just get a Zoom H4n Pro, and place it on a stand in front of the pan, or above it. When recording with the built-in X/Y mic, you'll get a stereo image of the sound.

Does this make sense so far?
Mounting the recorder on the camera can cause issues, such as handling noise making it into the recording. Plus, if you're using the built-in mics on the recorder, you're likely to hear some of the camera operator's breathing.

Hows the built in speaker?
Decent, but they're really just for reference, in case you forgot your headphones.
Great great review, thanks man!
THE INTERNET VOICE-OVER KING has upgraded his game! 11 out if 10 m’Lord! You’ve reached a new level and still have the golden voice. Hail the internet voice-over king! 👑
Ha, thanks Tony! Yeah, I always try to make these videos better :) The newer camera and lens also help.
@@christianskyes I’ve been using the Zoom H6 for about 1-2 years. Been wondering why my XLR mic hasn’t been recording it’s backup track. Will try what you mentioned (using the L+R channel from the x/y capsule (perhaps with the 3.5 mm jack and a lav mic?). This was the 1st video I listened to with my new bluetooth headset that arrived today. Love the longer videos you’re producing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Keep up the good work. Your channel is going to grow fast very soon. 👍
Now you know why it wasn't recording the backup track :D Not sure about the 3.5mm, but it SHOULD work 🤔 Congrats on the new headphones, and that's good to know! I always try to make them as long/short as they need to be, but with these more complete reviews on the Zoom recorders, there's a lot of information to pack in :)
@@christianskyes thanks a lot! Will get F6 then! What do you think of its preamps?
@@DietSodium I've never had the chance to try the F6, so I don't actually know 🤔
So which one will you recommend for ambient that is still in production?
@@evenaicantfigurethisout Not sure really. Nothing that's handheld really comes close to the PCM-D100. It seems to be discontinued now, so they go for quite a bit on eBay.
HELP: I want to import a music backing track to lay vocals along side to be mixed later IN THE H6. There is not ONE video that explains how to do this that works. I tried even converting the backing track to the specs the H6 is recording at on my laptop on the SD as I saw in a video but when I go back to the H6 and put the SD back in the H6 I can't find the backing track to play I want to use to lay vocals. I'm not talking about overdubbing I just need the track to be able to be referenced while recording.
Can anyone help me or lead me to a very specific and good english video that shows how?
Just rename it to a file name format that the Zoom itself uses for its tracks (e.g ZOOM0001_Tr12 for a stereo file)
@@minisynthmaniac didn't work.
Is it possible to record music with a UHF wireless pickup?
Just got a Zoom H6 as I'd like to make ASMR videos 😅 Now you have mentioned the Sony PCM D100 and I'm thinking damn, I should have looked into that instead as the sounds I'm making are really quiet and I'm trying to avoid too much noise! Oh well, this was a great and helpful video and the sound is great! Thank you 😁
Holy moly the Sony PCM is pricey as hell at about £1000 😅
Yup 😂 They're hard to find at the moment. Some say it's discontinued, others say they're just pausing production,. but regardless, prices have shot up as a result.
Did you end up keeping the h6? I just bought one for ASMR aswell...
@@valendis Yes I decided to keep the H6 although due to work and life getting busy I never really got to using it for recording asmr but hope to make more of an effort next year 👍
@@sandcrushlove good to know, I should receive it this week, from what I've seen it sounds great!
The ms capsule is $75 now on Sweetwater but was free before? Zany
Indeed :)
CapShuul? What the hell is that?! All humor aside, will the H6 do voice activated recording? I'd love to know. Thank you.
To my knowledge it does not, but you could always use the remote?
I tried saying it in the US pronunciation just now, CapSuhl, and it sounds do weird 😂
@@christianskyes Ok, now try saying A-Loom-A-Num. And why so much anger in your voice!?
Hi, Thank you for the video.
My interest is recording stereo effect / binaural recording.
Is it possible' to connect 2 mics directly to opposite sides of the H6 to achieve that effect or do I need to connect them with a XLR cable and a bar?
Thanks again (-:
Fantastic!
Glad you like it!
Thank you Christian, I just recently purchased one of these devices and I am very new to recording. Your review and breakdown has been the most descriptive that I have seen since I purchased the device. The information you provided is extremely helpful as I was quite confused about what applications would use which microphones. I was also very pleased with your coverage of its limitation’s and what it would not be good for. Thanks again I’m glad you liked my short previous post but one Word said at all.
Excelent 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Stunning review Chris I've used zoom guitar FX in the early days I played live at Wembley in the guitarist of the year 1994 with a zoom 9000 lol great little unit,,,the company and innovation is top-notch best wishes from UK England 👍. Ps that h8 look a beast
Thanks a lot :) The Zoom 9000 :O I know the one! Also, I think I've seen the video from the 1994 Guitarist of the year at Wembley 🤔 I was 2 at the time, so I could not attend 😂
PS: The H8 is indeed a beast, should put out a review on it as well.
@@christianskyes blimmy I feel old lol yeah a review on the beast 🙏👍👍
Sorry about that 😂
I really appreciate the review, and I am considering the H6. The only issue I had with the video, was that it is apparent you had the mic way too close to your mouth. It sounds like you are trying to record in a library by whispering directly into the microphone. This made the video difficult for me to watch despite the great detail you provided. Other than that, the detail was great about the Zoom H6. Thanks for providing it.
Shu
wonderful voice please advise between zoom h6 and tascam portacapture x8 thanx
I was interested in the info, but your whispering voice makes it unbearable to hear (and understand) the whole thing.
Wery good
Why are you whispering bro
Pretentious slow-talking VO and generic ambient music bed make this unbearable.
woooow....what a talented artist...that slowmo footage....the trippy free music....that non gay voice 🤣🤣🤣
