The Zoom H6 Audio Recorder - Complete Review and Sample Audio!

  • In this video I will demonstrate the audio quality of the Zoom H6 portable six track recorder with interchangeable Mics.
    I shot this video using the Rode NT-1 studio condenser microphone plugged into one of the XLR ports in the zoom unit.
    I also take some time to test out and demonstrate the audio form the H6-XY capsule and the MSH-6 Mid/side capsule along with various other demonstrations which are at the end of the video.
    If you're a RUclipsr, looking to get better quality audio in your productions, a Podcaster looking to connect multiple microphones in a portable recorder at home or in the field the Zoom H6 is a great option for you.
    Note I mention that it doesn't come with a power adaptor. Keep in mind that viewers have pointed out that you can power it via the provided mini usb port using an iphone charger or even usb battery pack.....
    NOTE: Towards the end of the video I demonstrate a lapel microphone connected into the XLR port on the side. Now the official word by rode is that you should use the Rode VXLR+ 3.5mm Mini-Jack to 3-Pin XLR(M) Adaptor w/ Power Convertor. It will downgrade the 12V phantom power to 3.5V which is the recommended amount of power for their lav mic's. This is a safer option in order to avoid blowing out your lav mic...

    Recording synths is mainly what I am going to be using it for, and seeing the sound test with Roland Boutiques was very satisfying. The noise and hiss that many reviewers have been complaining about was not there. Thank you for your great review, it helped me make my decision.

      Great to hear. I find that if you keep the inputs under 5/10 there is no inherent line noise or hiss. Some early analogue synths have a bit of noise to deal with but again if you watch the levels you can get a very clean recording.

      Hi there, thanks for checking out the video. I am a little confused as you mention that you want to use a USB microphone and the H6 when you can plug a USB mic right into the computer so don't need the h6 for that. So if you are happy to use the h6 you can consider an XLR microphone instead. Technically they would be the best in terms of fidelity of sound. So something like the Rode NT1, Rode Podcaster or Sure SMB XLR mic plugged into the Zoom would be premium. Now if you want to avoid using the H6 for convenience and just plug and play then a usb mic would be great. I haven't tested the new Sure MV7 but I thought it was pretty close to the legendary SMB in sound so I would have thought that would be a good pick. Next up the Rode NT USB is a good option. I haven't tested any of the Blue mics or apogee so can't say but I know they are pretty good. I have been sent a few microphones from BOYA recently and despite the low cost have been impressed with the quality of these mics. I did a review on the BM 700 which you can see here if you are interested: ruclips.net/video/DwBnGxCNVFM/видео.html If you have time listen to the audio and let me know if you think it is better than the Shure, it was plugged right into my Macbook Pro and recorded in Garage band for the demo. No EQ

    wow thank you so much for that last section with the tested audio, i was curious about how each mic set up would sound especially with the sound effects. Do you recommend using the wind muffler (foam thing) on top of XY mic when filming indoors? I have mine on but i'm scared it'll muffle the audio instead of it being as crisp as it can be.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  4 года назад +3

      You're welcome. Thanks for checking out the video! I don't think the windshield would noticeably muffle the sound in any way so if you wanted to you could leave it on. Having said that I tend to leave it off in doors just to ensure there is nothing in the way of the mic, however subtle it may be. The only benefit of using the windshield indoors would be when using it for voice over to reduce plosives when talking into it at a distance of 30cm or less so for any other recordings of music room ambience product unboxing etc I tend to leave it off.

    I had a Zoom H6 for a few days used to record audio on location. The worst design flaw I found was the channel volume "resetting" itself to zero when booting up via line level XLR input. I had the misfortune to notice this fault while on the shoot (from then on I had to keep slighty moving the dial input every time I switched the unit on to "wake up" the correct channel volume). I had to put tape around my XLR connectors to "pad out" the connection to try and prevent my cables from accidentally being pulled out because of the lack of XLR push-locks. Also the pre-amps are a bit meh, didn't cut it so had to power my mics via my sound devices mixer instead. It just about did the job... but 2 days with such a flakey machine was enough for me and sent it back!

    Hi mate, loved the review on this and really close to pulling the trigger on this.
    Being a musician, is it possible to use the 3.5 mm line output as an input to record straight out of the onstage audio mixer with the necessary cable. And if so, I'm assuming it would only be in mono and not stereo right?
    Cheers mate 👍😊

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  Год назад +1

      Great to hear. Thanks for checking out the video. Did you mean to use the 3.5mm output to pass through the audio from the zoom into the stage mixer? If so, yes this can be done. I have used it to pass through audio to my DSLR camera in the past but not sure about the stereo. Let me check and I'll get back to you. If meant that you want to record the audio from the stage mixer into the zoom then you can also do that but you would use the XLR inputs on the side or if you have a 3.5 cable coming from the mixer you can use the 3.5 input on the XY capsule. I talk more about that in the following video: ruclips.net/video/aLCgvOajyD8/видео.html

    The XYH-6 at the end has a bit of echo in the sound, is that from the capsule itself or did you do some post work on the audio.? The Ss were too harsh also, did you have the windshield cover on? Thanks for the review.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  3 года назад +1

      No post production in the audio. The echo is really more to do with the environment that I recorded in. It is a large open space around 30m SQ. Hardwood floors and no soft furnishings etc. As far as the silibence goes on the S sounds it may have something to do with the mic but also my voice. I do produce a fair amount of Ss as most people do so really you do have to EQ it in post to get rid of it on any mic.

    Hi, I have been using the H6 for a couple of years now and am more than happy with it. However, just one thing that has puzzled me and perhaps you can answer this as I se you have the same issue. At 3:20 your display shows the XY and four separate channels, at 3:49 your display now shows the XY and three channels (channels 3&4 are now combined) . I only got this when I upgraded the firmware to 2.30, I did a factory reset and then all the channels were displayed as per 3:20. Any clue as to what has happened or have I missed something very obvious.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  4 года назад +1

      I know exactly what you are referring to and certainly doing a factory reset will bring it back to four mono tracks. plus the LR capsule tracks. However you don't need to do a factory reset. You can link channels 1&2 or 3&4 as stereo channels using the MS Matrix in the settings. For some reason when you try and turn the link of using the MS Matrix setting it doesn't always work. So what I do is to tap on the channel 3 button and at the same time tap on channel 4 for example and this will link and unlink without going into the MS matrix menu.

    Excellent review brother. I bought a H6 after watching this review a few months ago. I do have a question, as I am somewhat new to audio - how did you get such good sound using a condenser microphone in what seems to be an untreated room?

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  2 года назад +2

      Great to hear you have been enjoying the H6. It has been great for me still using it! The room is pretty bad acoustically and due to the hard floors and shutters along with the open space has a bit too much natural reverb. In this recording I got around it by making sure I was as close as possible to the mic. I was speaking at a distance of around 10cm. If I go back to 15cm or 20cm then you tend to hear more reverb. I didn't apply the usual effect rack on this recording either as I wanted people to hear what it sounds like as is. For other recordings I do on my channel when I can't quite get the mic up that close I have been using some post production software called deverberate by Acon. I cover it at the 6 minute mark of the following video: ruclips.net/video/KRwvUM2JxuU/видео.html

    Thank you for the informative review. I’m new to this technology. I’m looking to do discussion recordings in public places like restaurants where I want minimal amount of equipment to take to site and minimize background noise. Would I be able to use this on its own or should I attach external mics? Thanks!

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  Год назад +1

      If you place the zoom unit in the middle of a table in between those who are speaking the built in mics will capture the audio quite well. However the further away the microphone is from the subject voice the more room noise, echo and environmental noise will be present in the recording. So in a noisy restaurant it will not sound great. As such you should consider using a seperate microphone for each speaker. If it is a podcast style of recording you can get xlr podcast mics and put them on stands about 30-50cm away from each person. Another option is to use Lapel microphones and plug each one into the XLR ports of the zoom. Up to four can be used. However keep in mind you may need to down the phantom power on the XLR ports using Rode VXLR Pro 3.5mm TRS to XLR with Phantom-Power Converter. This is because most wired lav mics use phantom power but on 4w. The XLR ports can be set to 12 or 24 Watts and can overpower the lavs. Otherwise you can try to find wired lav mics that do not need phantom power and use a basic XLR to 3.5 adaptor. I know its getting confusing but just laying out the options for you.

      @@Touchtechnologyreview thanks for the guidance! In that case, I’ll start with just the unit by itself on the table and dry run that to see how the quality of found is, and then work my way up from there if I need to add dedicated mics. Thanks again!

      @@alirezayousefi3054 Sure thing see how it goes. The closer the mic is to the speakers the better the results will be. If the environment is just too noisy then you'll have to consider external mics.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  3 года назад +1

      Thank You. Glad you liked the review. Yes I think it is a great option for you. You can speak directly into the included microphone. It does sound great as it is and you can get away with it easily for solo podcasts. However the built in XY capsule is really designed for general purpose audio pick up more for music capturing natural sounds in the environment. And if you put it on a table in between guests it does sound pretty decent but you get a fair bit of room noise and echo. So to get the best results when podcasting with guests especially, grab some XLR microphones so each guest has their own mic. There are many good options around Perhaps to start with the Rode Pod Mike as they are so cheap and sound great. If you have a higher budget The Podcaster Mic or Sure SM7b(very expensive though)

    I've been looking for audio interfaces for a while to be able to record my piano. I wanted to get a set of SE07's and a SSL2. After seeing this review I wonder if it wouldn't be better to get this ZOOM 6 instead. If I combine it with two SE7 I can use the 'on board' mics to pic up either a second instrument, voice, or maybe the soundboard of the piano to get a fuller sound. Or I can just use it the same way as I would use the SSL2 but be more flexible/mobile and also be able to use more phantom powered mics. Am I missing something or is the sound quality much better from a device like the SSL? Would love to get some input on this.

      I haven't tested it but I think if you get the appropriate cables which would include a TRS to TRRS cable such as the Rode SC07 plug that into the lightening to 3.5 adaptor cable by apple it should do the trick. What I have tested and can confirm works is plugging the Zoom H6 into the iphone using the usb port. I got the Apple lightening to usb camera adaptor plugged the zoom in and most software titles including the rode reporter app, iMovie, Garage Band, Voice Memo's etc pick up the zoom H6 as the audio source. So I would assume live streaming software would also pick it up. However not having tested with streaming I can't be 100% sure.

I then plugged a TRRS (m) to TRRS (m) cord into the adapter and iPhone headphone jack (I was using an iPhone 6 where they still exist, but this would also work with the lightning to 3.5mm adapter). The live-stream went well. There was one hitch - monitoring. If I were to do it over again using this setup, I would add a splitter to plug in headphones. That said, I think I am going to buy the other USB 3.0 adapter (I got the older lightning-usb camera adapter and it didn't work for me) so that you can have digital audio and monitor without adding a splitter.

    I have a unique questions for ya. Would this Zoom H6 be able to record clear and sharp audio within a military tank? Right now we use audio from our GoPros and people's individual cellphone recordings. Normally we don't get a good 'crack' of the main gun from the gopro footage.
    We would like to be able to record inside and outside the vehicles and not have the audio get saturated out or peak and become inaudible. Would this Zoom H6 be able to do the job?

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  3 года назад +1

      Yes the H6 would be ideal for this. You can use either the XY capsule microphone or mid to side mic depending on which kit you purchase. Both are great microphones. The pre amps on the H6 are also great so you get good signal to noise ratio. Unlike smart phones which are designed to pick up vocals and apply some digital noise reduction which can often reduce the actual clarity of the audio. So yes the H6 is great for that type of recording. You may have to experiment with the distance to the source and levels but you will have the ultimate flexibility.

      Yes I sync i up in post in order to ensure that I get the best audio quality. You can plugin a 3.5 cable into the line out at the front of the Zoom and then into your camera and that would record the audio onto your video file. It should sound pretty good but keep in mind that your camera pre-amps and the use of 3.5 cable always introduces more noise and technically won't sound as good as audio recorded onto the zoom itself.

    How long does the H6 take to power on? I have the H4n Pro and like the regular H4n it takes a long time to boot depending on what size SD card you use..

    thanks for this, cool. Does audio quality decrease if you run line out to camera? I use a7iii and would like to run line out from Zoom H6 but not sure if I'll lose quality.

      The pre-amps in the H6 are much higher in quality than A7III and you can even record at 48hz 24 bit which is higher than the A7. However you might find that if you use manual settings on the A7 and keep it quite low and dial up the volume input on the H6 it may sound quite pretty close. I have and EOS R which has very clean audio but it still doesn't sound the same compared to the audio recorded on the Zoom. You can record to the SD card on the Zoom while you simultaneously record audio to the camera via the output and then see if you can tell the difference when you bring in the audio on the timeline.....

      @@Touchtechnologyreview thanks very much yes I am doing testing today. I have to put the LIne out on H6 at -30db and Sony a7iii on record level 1 and yes still the sound is cleaner if I just use the Zoom recording. Working different tests with the monitor mixer to see if that helps. Good lesson for me to start using H6 and just syncing in post. I set Zoom to 96kHz/24 bit is there any reason that won't be compatible in post? What Rec Format settings do you use to match with EOS R?

    Huh. We bought an H6 Black, but it didn’t come with the case, nor the round capsule.
    Also, I tested the XY capsule straight out of the box, and man, the noise level was higher than our old Marantz!

      It will depend on where you buy it from and what price you paid. I purchased the full kit from a local audio supplier and it came with both. I have just had a look on amazon and BH photo and can see some are offering the Zoom H6 All black with single mic and others are offering alternate bundles with power supply and remote units. So that is up the to reseller to specify what you get for the agreed price. As for the noise level, It should be relatively low at the lower end of dial from 1-5, as you go higher it will introduce more noise. Also depends on whether you are using the xy mic or xlr microphones.

      @@Touchtechnologyreview Hm. Ok. I saw a few configurations of the H6 on Amazon, but I had to keep differentiating between the previous H6 and the Black one (still wondering wht is the deal with people saying the earlier one was better).
      As for the test, as I said, I used the XY. Haven't yet tried XLR, but we have SM-58s that I expect will work well. I suppose a mic upgrade is due, though!

    Can you use this with an iPhone? If you’re recording with your phone but use this as the mic.
