I left Donington in 1991 with 3 overriding memories. 1: The crowd going mental when Metallica came on, piss bottles flying everywhere. 2: Being absolutely deafened when the canons went off above the stage when AC/DC were on. 3: Seeing a band called Queensrÿche, I’d heard the name before but had never listened to anything they did and I just remember being absolutely blown away by them. They easily had the best sound out of all the bands that day. As soon as I got home, I bought there CD’s. Operation Mindcrime is without a doubt one of the best albums ever made.
I had never heard of Queensryche before, either. But my 1st experience took place in 1989. They opened for Metallica at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It was so indescribably beautiful. I could not belive what beautiful sounds my ears were hearing. I will never forget it. They did most of Mindcrime. And when they were finished, I could've gone home, without seeing Metallica's AJFA. WOW!
Monsters of Rock 1991 at Donington, England, consisted of only 5 bands - Black Crowes, Queensryche, Motley Crue, Metallica and AC/DC. It was a really good day.
This was a good day. Freezing at the end as DC came on. I went there to see Queensryche again. Crowd took some time to warm to them. Listening back to this it reminds you how how awesome they were. A brilliant day.
Thanks for this. This was my first Donington and aside from Motley I loved every band. Seeing Metallica that day was the highlight, I loved them so much back then.
@johnnyrobberts : Yes, Geoff was in training for the Tour de France. Seriously though, I was there that day --17th August 1991, and Queensyche sounded absolutely stunning. However, possibly my most enduring memory of the day, was that of Metallica's performance -- and "thousands" of plastic bottles of beer dregs and piss which were launched into the air for five-or-so minutes of their set. And speaking or beer, I felt somewhat worse-for-wear the next day . . . and the day after that.
This was a really great day. I remember AC/DC were terrible though, 10 minute drum solos in the middle of every song. Queensryche and Metallica were great though.
@Flaggius Best ever? Dunno 'bout that. Tons of amazing singers out there. Freddie Mercury, Ronnie James Dio, Chris Cornell, Brad Delp, etc. This guy has a good vocal range and control, but it's not just about that.

Yes, I got hit in the face by a bottle of piss and it broke my glasses but still a great day.
Oof piss bottles lol...remember it well
Yeah I'd never heard of Queensrÿche but I agree they blew me away as well..and I went out and got some albums lol

"You're the air to me." (Jet City Woman)
Now that is a stunningly, beautiful lyric line right there. 💚
I was there 😊
He was such a beautiful man back then.
He still is to me.😍🤷
best metal singer ever.
I was there ... Just in front of the barrier , Row 2 about 10M off center ... an amazing gig .... bit warm and sunny though ..
It was a great day and unusually dry and sunny for a Monsters of Rock festival
Geoff Tate is the best singer ever, no fuckin doubt. He is not even comparable to Dickinson or Halford, no way. HAIL QUEENSRYCHE! Best band ever made.
Você está certo! E eu adorei os vídeos do Unplugged MTV você postou. Obrigada por compartilhar

Geoff Tate is one of my best five... among Robert Plant, Roy Khan, Michele Luppi, and Fabio Lione.
Roy Khan is another one of those legends that's so underrated
who cares, he's so hot in this footage!!
I think he’s still hot
Thanks so much for uploading this. Like others, I was there, and this has brought back some amazing memories :D Best Donnington, ever!
Fantastic performance by the classic line-up---now if only Geoff Tate's Queensryche can make a note of this, LOL!!!!
I was at that line up show got the shirt...trying to remember where in Germany I was LOL
exelente banda con exelente presentacion
I was right at the front for this. It was insanely hot !

10 minute drum solo in every song? AC/DC? Cool!
Love this!
Good. Just...Good.
The line up was :-
AC/DC
Metallica
Motley Crue
Queensryche
The Black Crowes
Nice ESP guitar on Chris Degarmo
I was there at the front the sound doesn’t do it justice tbh
Thats a bad ass drum kit.
i think this was when they were opening for Iron Maiden.
Nope - the were second on the bill below Motley Crue, Metallica and AC/DC
Awesome stuff spoony.

I was 16 at the time. I vaguely remember someone had killed a sheep and had it on their car. I think I slept through Motley Crue.
