    In response to the comments saying Geoff "couldn't hit the high notes" in this video, something important to keep in mind: this was very likely toward the END of their set (maybe even the final encore), as this tour was in support of Empire. Meaning, he had the balls to play 'Take Hold the Flame' AFTER singing his ass off for an hour or more. And he had to do this night after night... for several months. And yet, he still did hit several high notes (granted, not as sustained as they normally would be). So to even get THIS performance is a true testament to the generational talent Geoff Tate is as a vocalist.
    Oh, and as a drummer -- it was so satisfying to finally hear this song with that BIG 1991 drum sound I've always longed to hear on this track.

    • @BPoweredLove
      @BPoweredLove Год назад

      You're being kind. Geoff knows this song has a long E5 to hit in the beginning, so this song should be early in the setlist if what you're saying is true. And honestly, for him, it's not hard to hit that note and sustain it for a bit. He slightly its it at 3:55.
      And furthermore, I will tell you that if hitting high notes ain't your thang, then don't right and release songs where high notes are the thing. SOO simple. Do you hear Eddie Vedder doing that?

    • @benitokamelo252
      @benitokamelo252 Год назад +1

      @@BPoweredLove You know, some people say that he was saving his voice for that 18 month tour. And it's kinda right since they were performing +22 songs per show every night (excellent performances btw) but in my opinion he also became lazy. Not talking about "Take Hold Of The Flame" which is a VERY difficult song to sing and I can understand he skips some notes, but what about "Walk In The Shadows"? That song was like the 3rd song on every set (right after "Resistance") almost an opening song, and Geoff delivers a pretty weak rendition of it in every Empire show.
      He tunes down, skips some notes and doesn't even tries the F#5 after the solo when he was capable to go very high (still).
      Its like he didnt like the song or something, and that gives a very poor rendition of a great song.
      Please, compare that song to the 1989 or 1997 live versions , big difference.
      It's strange that he performed way better the last Empire shows in 1992
      than in the whole tour.
      Still, he is a TOP singer andnhe was very powerful back in the 90's, that unplugged session is extraordinary.

    Singing high and especially the notes that made him distinguished from other metal singers of that era (1982) is very grueling. If you watch live videos from their touring especially between 1983 and 1986 you will hear Geoff Tate singing to his voice limit
    So he understood clearly that if he continues to sing like the way he did during Rage for Order and Warning, he would have lost his voice. Fast forward 34 years later sometimes Tate chooses to hit the high notes but as he admitted he loves to drink red wine, was smoking which affected his vocal range and he is older. As a baritone his voice has got a deeper tone

      +VoraciousSouls95 Not on the Empire tour. Sadly, his voice started changing during the Operation: Mindcrime tour (he was a smoker) and it was obviously starting to get harder for him to hit those super high notes. He straight up avoided most of them on this tour.

      +VoraciousSouls95 3:56 is the same note and you can tell it's a bit raspy and he can't hold it long. :(

    Lawdy This man's voice & long beautiful hair. Lost count of how many times I've played
    Silent lucidity.
    I wanna run my fingers through Geoff's hair.

    The very first album I ever bought with my chores money. I was 13 years old. Creatures and Blizzard of Oz. I will never forget the summer of 1983.

    This song blew me away in 1984 Tate still sounds incredible now, but we all have to remember one thing :- taking care of your voice is important and I'm sure many will say Tate sounds better now. I believe this song was releassed around or prior the time of the LA Olympics in '84. Tate matches Halford for range in this, and probably outdoes him but this is one hell of a song to match vocally properly. It takes a lot of balls to be perfect.

    It's pretty crazy how much the production, the performance and all makes this song sound like an Operation Mindcrime or Empire song now.

    Omg 😲 wow this is amazing live ! I thought that Midnight Crimson Glory other legend of USA metal was better vocalist than Geoff Tate, but after listening this video i change opinion. The performance of Tate here are so spectacular incredible clean freshness powerful so epic vocal ! In studio version many singers are seems legends but in lives not so much great. Geoff Tate was sure rreally one of the few greatest vocalists in live performances and more better than many others rok 80,90s famous legends that we know
