Guitar work on this song is exceptional. DeGarmo's solo is not flashy, instead, he builds suspense and drama with excellent feeling for bends and pauses, and it sounds absolutely fantastic.
Yes! You explained it so well! I love how they were always about playing what served and enhanced the song, and not just showing off. So many decent songs are ruined by an over-the-top guitar solo that, musically, has very little connection to the song itself. They had such a good feel for building a song's intensity and drama, and then counter--pointing with a softer, melodic section that just elevated the whole song! I LOVE them!! And how I miss all of them being together!
Hand on Heart is another song on this record with a seriously great solo - even when you hear the song fade out at the very end the solo is just amazing
This solo is a master class in the fundamental purpose of music - storytelling and connection, something that is accomplished through tension and release, conflict and resolution. Chris creates tension and resolution by alternately locking in tight to the rhythm for a couple bars and then floating out of it for a couple bars, both rhythmically and melodically, with soaring bends and freestyle rhythmic phrasing, only to come back and lock right back in, and he keeps alternating between the locked-in and fluid rhythm patterns right into the final flourish. Very much worth studying for guitarists.

The whole "Empire" album is Queensrÿche at their best I think.
i know....it seemed then and still seems as if someone somewhere with a whole lot of power made sure then never got nationwide exposure or allowed to get as famous/influential as they should have back then................
Hell, regardless of the year it is, I'll always be jamming to this band. I bought this album when it was new and it stayed in my car's tape player for weeks thereafter without being ejected once. Not to mention the memories that are tied to this album and that era... mostly good, but ending horribly. But that's life, eh? Mostly good, but usually ending horribly.
This man, this band in 2023, is still kicking ass today . I am still in love like I was with this band 30 years back. Those vocals, theatrical guitars, flawless drums, and that "o my word" bass lines were just ahead of it's time. . Bring back old school...long live metal!!!!!
Maui MItch Not true. His father was a U.S. diplomat and his mother was an artist and writer of children’s books. Although Geoff said his mother had a “very nice voice” it was an aunt who was the opera singer.
THE most underrated Progressive Metal band ever, with 2 of the most undeerated guitarists ever. Tates voice is legendary, Wilton & Degarmo are a fantastic tandem.
... And the most underrated ritmic combo: Eddie Jackson and Scott Rockenfield. Their Rush influences are quite clear, but still they have an original sound.
Scott and Eddie are not given enough credit for how solid, tight, and driving their rhythms were. Never just standard, serviceable stuff. Always propelling the songs with a deep, full, and heavy foundation, sprinkled with unusual and quirky little tidbits. SO GOOD! I miss all you guys!
These guys helped me thru one of the most difficult times in my life as a teenager. Thanks for the greatness I still listen to and thinking back then how far I've come and I did survive to become a successful adult.

The bass guitar comes in at the beginning, giving off the sound of a thunderous rumble, then the guitar comes in with those long, vibrating, steely notes, & the drums provide the sound of wind, thrust & lift, then Geoff Tate comes in with that powerhouse of a voice & this song has suddenly got the entire feel of flying in an actual & supersonic jet, soaring high above, through the highest of skies! Took me a lot of years to come down from this album! I am 55 now, and I was lucky enough to come of age in the 80's. Back in a time when about all you and your friends lived for rock, and what the next upcoming concert was. And who was camping out for tickets. GOD I MISS THE TIME AND THE MUSIC!
" camping out for tickets" Now that was an event all unto itself. That was so much fun. And fair. You actually had a decent chance to score killer seats, depending your place in line. Ahhh...makes me wanna cry bringing my mortality into focus 😢
Agreed! They wrote their strongest stuff in that era. Even when they strayed into stripped back, minimal production mode on Hear in the Now Frontier.....DeGarmo's last effort with the band.....I like that one more all the time. DeGarmo could get above Tate on those harmonies...that's saying something. You never know man...I could see them putting some stuff together again...maybe...during Seattle's rainy season some time in the future.
Seriously, one the all time best concerts I've seen!! No clue as to why they were never recognized!! They slam!!! Love geoff! What a beautiful man and voice!!

When I hear this song as an older man, I am now just thankful that so many great artist enhanced my youth. This song will live with me forever.

That guitar solo always reminded me a little of "Stairway To Heaven" has that same kinda epic melody and tone. Everything you love about rock music in one amazing track! The whole "Empire" album is Queensrÿche at their best I think.
There's something so hypnotizing about this song that I will never get tired of listening to it.
The vocals are as huge as the production..especially during chorus.
Yep! Also like to listen to their Queen of the Reich & Silent Lucidity....
All of their music is that way for me especially Silent Lucidity and AnybodyListening.
Totally!
I've never heard a better vocalist anywhere, ever.
Another great heavy weight metal band. So many of them.
I'm here listening to the amazing difference in bands today? These were the days!
Lightning strikes occasionally in the music world. Bringing these musicians together at the right place and right time. Untouchable!
With this band lightning struck so many times that it tore the band apart.
Go back to bed
Exactly! God had them serve their purpose a LONG time ago and it can never be erased! 🤩
@@firstnamelastname5899Lucifer works more in the music industry god works with those who love him.
Most over looked Metal band ever.. These guys rock as hard as anyone and with a singer that was better than 90% of the others..
i know....it seemed then and still seems as if someone somewhere with a whole lot of power made sure then never got nationwide exposure or allowed to get as famous/influential as they should have back then................
Your so right
His parents were opera singers
The Queen handled their business both on and off stage(Studio) I mean.
I love this band!
Wish I had a penny for every time this song played at a strip joint.
Fuck yeah !
Awesome!!😂
Damn, you got that right. I hit Canada a lot :)
2020 who is still on here jamming!!!
I am ! Kick ass song!
Damn right.
Absolutely!! Brings me back to the days of 🤘🤘 to my pioneer car system I painted a WHOLE HOUSE for...lol
I am! Amazing from start to finish!
One of the greatest voices in metal. Had the privilege seeing them at TCC in Tucson, AZ. Spectacular light show!!! One of the best!!
This man, this band in 2023, is still kicking ass today . I am still in love like I was with this band 30 years back. Those vocals, theatrical guitars, flawless drums, and that "o my word" bass lines were just ahead of it's time. . Bring back old school...long live metal!!!!!
He isn’t with Queensryche anymore! I follow him on Facebook- he’s still one of the greatest singers ever!
this aint metal. good yes, metal no.
One of the most iconic voices to ever belt out a song. Queensryche will never be the same with out him!
Just saw them a couple years ago, they sounded fine. Geoff's replacement has about 85-90% of his range, which still sounds amazing live.
Same here Ioved these guys in high school and college.
He's still got the pipes, saw video from earlier in the year. Sounds the same, incredible!
Oh, you know it!!
I love his voice. That man sure can sing.
He's a classically trained opera singer as were his parents, he never misses a note. Awesome band for sure. Cheers :o)

One of the rare good metal singers
Maui MItch Not true. His father was a U.S. diplomat and his mother was an artist and writer of children’s books. Although Geoff said his mother had a “very nice voice” it was an aunt who was the opera singer.
Yes definitely, he has one of the best voices
THE most underrated Progressive Metal band ever, with 2 of the most undeerated guitarists ever. Tates voice is legendary, Wilton & Degarmo are a fantastic tandem.
... And the most underrated ritmic combo: Eddie Jackson and Scott Rockenfield. Their Rush influences are quite clear, but still they have an original sound.
Not with the numbers in sales that they produced
Scott and Eddie are not given enough credit for how solid, tight, and driving their rhythms were. Never just standard, serviceable stuff. Always propelling the songs with a deep, full, and heavy foundation, sprinkled with unusual and quirky little tidbits.
SO GOOD! I miss all you guys!
I was at this sold-out concert where this video was shot in Madison WI. I am in the audience shots by the stage. Fantastic show!!!
Awesome! The coliseum is old but good acoustics.
These guys helped me thru one of the most difficult times in my life as a teenager. Thanks for the greatness I still listen to and thinking back then how far I've come and I did survive to become a successful adult.
Hell yeah!! Music can do that.
Wow!! 👏👏
Me too! And the album was Operation Mindcrime.
Criminally Underrated Band.
Their first five albums are Top Tier!
Every time I leave
You say you won't be there
And you're always there
Every time I cry your name at night
You pull close and say it's alright
I look in your eyes, just like the rain
Washing me, rain wash over me
Touching your face, I feel the heat of your heartbeat
Echo in my head like a scream
What you do to me
Waited so long I can't wait another day without you
Jet city woman
It's a long way, home to my-
Jet city woman
I see her face everywhere
Can't get her out of my mind
Whenever I'm alone, I'm thinking
There's a part missing from my life
Wonder where I'd be without your love
Holding me together now I'm-
Watching the time tick, tick away
Face grows longer every day
Fortunes are lost on the women I've seen
But without you, I can't breathe
You're the air to me
Waited so long, I'm all alone thinking about you
Jet city woman
Got to find my way home to her
Jet city woman
I see her face everywhere I look
Jet city woman
Just a thousand miles and I'll be there
Jet city woman
To make the clouds go away
Time for some blue sky
Waited so long now the plane's delayed
And hour, reminds me of all our days apart
Hold on just a little longer
Jet city woman
Wonder where I'd be, you're the air to me
Jet city woman
Eyes like the rain, rain down on me
Jet city woman
No more nights alone, I'm almost home now
Jet city woman
Close my eyes, I'm there in my
Jet city
(Jet city)
Thank you.
Right on!!
Thanks so much !
Time for some blue sky man I need some of my life God damn
Thank you so much for posting the lyrics. 💕
Awesome!!
Love this...same feeling!
Came out when I was in high school in I’m 44 you do the math..use to lift to this song..and still do..when gyms had real weights and real music..what’s so wrong about living in the past ..they were real times kno bells and whistles ..just realtomes

QUeensryche - EMPIRE, one of the best rock album ever made!
PortaJoseph YES I agree PortaJoseph, v unique . .song pstd by Louise Middleton
Along with MINDCRIME
PortaJoseph every album ,first one , warning , empire , mindcrime ........saw them in 1982 with their EP and songs from their coming warning WOW amazing band , still my favorite but now , at 55 , I think Ghost is a great band , reminded me of my youngest years but , next week , I am going to see Ghost in Montreal, still young at heart ❤️

have you Seen him live? just have to say...holy mother of goodness his voice makes you melt
Who I Am wl green
Took me a lot of years to come down from this album! I am 55 now, and I was lucky enough to come of age in the 80's. Back in a time when about all you and your friends lived for rock, and what the next upcoming concert was. And who was camping out for tickets. GOD I MISS THE TIME AND THE MUSIC!
" camping out for tickets" Now that was an event all unto itself. That was so much fun. And fair. You actually had a decent chance to score killer seats, depending your place in line. Ahhh...makes me wanna cry bringing my mortality into focus 😢
My favorite song of theirs this never gets old. Pure adrenaline and Motivation 😎👌👍💯🎸🎸
R u gay
And no one has been able to come close to playing it
Real metal never dies.
Ehhhhhhactly.
What about rap
It never will
Never ! Hi from France !
TRUTH
2022 and still fresh and beautifully produced album.
I love the original Queensryche. The chemistry between DeGarmo & Tate was electric.
mskARin888 and nothing without the precision of Scott Rockenfield 👍
Talented musicians actually playing instruments not pushing buttons
Geoff is the voice of queensryche no one else can compare
Ditto!
Wat about the lead singer from the cult
Geoff Tates amazing voice is PERFECTION!!!
I second that!
Yup, absolutely the best ever..🤘❤❤❤❤🤘
Seriously, one the all time best concerts I've seen!!
No clue as to why they were never recognized!!
They slam!!!
Love geoff!
What a beautiful man and voice!!
Right on, Carol! They're totally awesome & Geoff Tate is so damn sexy!
because of their critical lyrics on the us politics and on background people..
Judas priest best band in the world
I saw the OPERATION: MINDCRIME tour live in Nashville. Suicidal Tendencies opened for Queensryche! Every song was true to the album version. No extra guitar solos. Incredible show! Reliving my youth watching these guys. There is a live version of Suite Sister Mary from the MINDCRIME tour on RUclips.
Underrated Singer Big Time !!!
One of my favorite songs ever😊
I can listen to this song over and over and over again! I love it. I grew up in the early/mid 80's and I still to this day cannot get enough of the music from the 80's and early 90's
The sound of that bass is badass.
yeah its awesome!!!!!
Rotosound Bass Strings!
Rotosound bass strings on a Spector NS-2.
Helium Road song kicks ass.
Michael Wilton?
This is quality Rock. Rhythmic sophistication, one of the best vocalists in the genre, guitar work is classic, mean bass line and drumming like he's on triple-pay (his follow-thru with the vocals). Seen them a few times. Never ever wanted my money back.
From hair bands to grunge QUEENSRYCHE was on its own their unplugged was one of the best so underrated, for me they were the first progressive rock band from the 80s 90s
Queensryche is one of the most underrated bands and happens to be one of my favorites. As a member of the younger generation it is my duty to make sure this band lives on. I've already opened a few dozen eyes. Operation Mindcrime has to be one of their best albums. Empire a STRONG second.
i agree mindcrime was a brilliant album its very underrated
Great musicianship + cerebral lyrics + delivered with an amazing voice = Queensryche.
I sang that at a karaoke bar mind yall im autistic my dad heard me sing it he was amazed a week later he had 3 mini strokes in his brain never made it he was my best friend & yes he liked this song everytime.i hèar i tear up miss you pappa!!!
🥺
I pray you find your way through this world to thrive in the next. God bless you young man.
DeGarmo, brilliant guitar player, even better composer, what a musician!
I was 17 back then, brings back so many memories when we were young, best time of my life, 80's were the best
Hells yeah
Yes That's when KISS killed Disco !!!!

This came out in 91 🤣🤣 though the 80s were good lol.
yo grandpa how used to be the snow on ya times
What a band! What a set of pipes!! What a song!!!👍🎸🥁❤️
Love Queensryche! Where has the last 30 years gone? I was 20 years old when this song came out. Time has been good to me though 😎🎸
I like this song its got ooooooommmffff I love when a Man Knows how to use his Vocals the proper way MASSIVELY AWESOME
Masterpiece.
Enough said.
one of the best bands of all time !!!
Most definitely...miss that Seattle sound they need a new one that just blows everyone's minds...
So...agreed! I do think they are a truly underrated band. This song is one of my favorites by them. I'm biased, because I just loved this album. I can't even tell you how many times I drove in my car with this song blasting. Lover the guitar and the lyrics. When I hear this song as an older man, I am now just thankful that so many great artist enhanced my youth. This song will live with me forever.
one of the PHATTEST lead breaks of any metal song ever
Geoff Tate, one of the greatest rock/metal vocalists that ever graced the stage. I've seen him live in concert, his voice is the real deal.
one of the most underrated vocalist in Rock
His vocal range is amazing
Jet City Wooomaaaaan…… Can’t get her out of my mind!
The Empire Album is a well Written, Well Produced Record. The Top of Queensryche Career, in my opinion.
The chemistry between DeGarmos Guitar and Tates Vocals are phenomenal.
Operation Mind Crime is a great Album
2024 and still listening
One in a million voice.... not many like that either. Great band!
been to many shows they sounds exactly as there recorded album.. Amazing live..
One of the best Seattle bands there ever was
They were the best
No, the best.
I agree
I've listened to This Band Since '84 back then on Vinyl an Still jamming on the Reg. At 54 yrs Old!! Tate's Vocal are Rarebreed!!!!
Queensryche is in my top 10 favorite heavy metal bands. Had the joy to see the 5 times over the years. Great sound. Thick and heavy. Clean and good flow.

I'm so glad I grew up in the 80's I got to see and listen to all the best bands that made music in that era. I was born 1965 and now I'm 58yrs old still listening to this group today 4/22/2023.
Yes. I saw queensryke at L'Amour on queens Blvd 87
I was born in 1977… the movies and music were great quality in the 80’s and 90’s… music today is crap.. I’m still living in the 80’s and 90’s.. Spotify all day!
2022 and still watching this amazing example of real music, superb vocals, and talent on the guitars.
Annika, my daughter, I want you to experience this just like I did in 1991. Like you, this album (Empire) changed my life. I love you so much! ❤
All the music that touched our hearts will never change the 70s 80s 90s
If you don't ROCK, you can roll... 🤘🏻
Queensryche was one of the best bands to ever have existed.
Have ever, dumbass
I saw them on this tour. What a night!
See her face everywhere, can't get her out of my mind.... Love that line!
Fortunes are lost on the women I've seen, but without you I can't breathe is what does it for me. Such a powerful, emotional voice. My god, it sweeps me away today just like it did three decades ago. Chills.
Can’t describe how great this song is , and how much it means to me!
Awww
I hope the up coming generations can feel that passion for music you obviously have.....i feel bad for anyone who hasn't ever had the hair on the arm stand up or chills at certain parts of a song every single time they hear it. Music moves me that way.
... his voice is magic !!! ......
Damn, I'm 71, still thinking this song, video & group are still more than hot. Embarrassed to say how many albums/cds I have of theirs from their beginnings.
