This was literally the first game I ever played for PSX, when a store called Fantastic Media had this setup so people could sample the then-new console. And when I got my own console, this was one of the first games I bought for it and is one I still go back and play (on emulator these days). So yes, I love it.
The PlayStation's first JRPG is more than a bit rough around the edges, but if you're a fan of Golden Sun, this early Camelot work might be worth a look.
The first PS1 RPG I ever bought, been years since I played and finished it, took a long time to find the last stone tablet towards the end of the game.
This is the only RPG game I couldn’t finish because it was so damn hard and challenging, but you keep playing it anyway. Just when you thought you trained hard enough and prepared for the next dungeon, you were extremely mistaken, and then died when you couldn’t get out, even when saving.
Decent game. I got it when it was released. The encounter rate is enough for anyone to rage quit. And i got lost on where to go like an hour or so into the game - instructions were unclear on where to go or they said it once and if you didnt catch it, too bad. The fact that the life spell is hidden secret,Samson is cursed for what feels forever, and grinding is way worse than any DQ game ive ever played. Still had fun, beat it twice and still have it. Lol
For those that happen to play Shining Force 3 Scenario 2, Domino shows up as the ship Captain. I always thought that was a nice little easter egg find for those that played both Beyond the Beyond and the Shining Force 3 games.
Ah, this game. I think the only reason it got any note was coming out in the limited window right at the start of a new console generation, but before Final Fantasy 7. JRPG fans were hungry for the next thing after Chrono Trigger, and FF7 was still two and a half years away. Oh hey, my brand new PS1 finally has an rpg to try! I didn't own a memory card when I rented this game. Played it for 7 hours straight, realized that I couldn't save it without one. My parents wouldn't be going to the mall until tomorrow night, so I turned the TV but left the playstation on for a day and a half, praying that there would be no power outage or someone accidentally turning it off and erasing my progress before I could come home with a card. In retrospect, the only good thing about this game was the starting village music. It was so good, it tricked me into thinking I was enjoying myself (along with the newness of a 32 bit rpg).
The thing is that I could handle one, or the other of those things. High encounter rates can be annoying, but I've played through RPGs with way higher encounter rates before with minimal issue. And puzzles are a great way to keep dungeons interesting. The problem I have with this game is that there are some dungeons that go way too hard on mixing the two. When I'm trying to figure out a puzzle, I don't want to keep getting interrupted with battles that distract me from solving the puzzle, yet Beyond the Beyond bombards you with that mix of features that do not blend well at all.
I loved this so much back then. Lot of things wrong with it in terms of development polish. But that don't matter to you at 11/12 years old. It is a an adventure all the same. Funny bit: I named my main after myself, Edward. Yeah it got really confusing when the party member showed up..
it's 1995 and sakuraba is a few years shy of composing my personal 🐐 video game soundtrack! i do like the more leftfield components of BtB's soundtrack though
@@NintendoComplete Golden Sun fan girl here. BtB soundtrack is eerily reminiscent of GS’s, so I like to think of BtB as a blueprint for GS. In terms of music but also many other aspects (over world gameplay, battle system, etc). I’m not saying BtB isn’t a complete game of its own, but I feel like the studio was honing their skills before putting out the best GBA RPG, imo.
@Estelle I gotcha, this definitely seems like they were establishing a template. Have you played Shining the Holy Ark? It has many of the same elements. Smilar soundtrack, it uses prerendered sprites for graphics, and its fairy system feels like precursor to GS's djinn system.
I wish we had gotten Popolocrois Monogatari instead of this, to be honest... but what can you do. I get why we had this instead, and yet it's still a bit of a shame all things considered. I personally couldn't get into this one. It's not 'horrible', but as you said, it's kinda rough.
@@NintendoComplete / :3 ~~checks~~ Well how 'bout that, I had no idea! I only ever played the ClapHanz ones myself; never knew it wasn't originally their series. Guess I know why they got entrusted with Mario Golf.
It's by the same people that made the Shining Force games. The combat would be fun if it didn't force you to buttonmash and if the encounter rate didn't somehow manage to make the frequency of ads on RUclips seem reasonable in comparison.
@@NintendoComplete The button mashing is the worst. It's like they looked at Mario RPG, thought to themselves, "Wow, that timed hit mechanic sure is a cool way to keep players engaged," and wanted to try copying it. Instead they made a horrible mess of a battle system that, while still fun for an RPG fan like myself, was more tedious than engaging because of all the mashing.
I really don't like the encounter system in JRPGs. Unless you're in a town, you'll be constantly attacked, and if you're not fast enough, you can't even flee. Pokemon handles that better

You know damn well that Camelot makes great RPGs, and you bring us one of Camelot's Early RPGs, sir you have my respect

2023(Gregorian) “Respect and dignity.” Furthermore:
If only they would remaster it or port it to the ps5

Walkthroughs are So much better without the players commentary. Thank you for just playing the game
One of my favorite developers. Great game!
(6:40:42 - 6:41:08) - This is the place where most of people don't know what to do. It took me 11 years to reveal this secret.
When I was a kid I called one of those old-fashioned video game advice hotlines to help me because I was so stuck there lol
The random encounters are driving me insane.

Oh boy do I miss those old Camelot days
This game and breath of fire 2 are my old favorite rpg i thank you for reminding me of simple times 😊😂

This maybe the first game I rented when getting a PlayStation. GAWD DAMN lol
Man this game make me think of shining force. the animation style and magic.. the music is definately in the same style as golden sun.
It was made by the same company that made the SF games.
The encounter rate was WAY TOO HIGH
Bit heavy on puzzles
But its a good classic story

I was not disappointed....

So my first feeling of this being a shining force game was spot on then? :) nice. :)
Its must be is beyond the beyond references of camelot games is super lego logan adventures rpg games on RUclips video.

I only played the cut-down PSP version of Popolocrois, but even in that state it was a much better game overall.
This game reminds me of Golden Sun too much, wish this saw a re-release as i want to play it
You can probably find a copy cheap. I remember seeing it in used game shops a long time ago in Japan for under 100 yen 😂
Why does the music and graphic intro and everything I saw so far reminds me of Everybody’s Hot Shots Golf?????
Minus the gold part…
Because Camelot made that game too, about a year before they made Mario Golf on the N64 and GBC.

This should have a sequel
Not smooth scrolling but nice game
wow that's some horrible FMV there ... game was pretty good though
the intro is so boring even with epic music! Talking about the music, the music is amazing.
Better than suikoden 😂. I prefer beyond !

Imo this game isn't a very good example of anything as far as JRPGs go
Top 10 cheater rpgs to dradon quest
This is one God-awful game.
