I'm in the process of getting a shack set up. So many different choices for radios! Having trouble choosing an antenna also. Anyway, I always enjoy your videos!
KN4WNM UHF only
You win. I used my daughter as a random number generator. I'll get your new radio in the mail in the next day or so! Congrats, thanks for watching!
I shipped your radio today.
@@HamRadioInAction thanks, Brian! I received the radio yesterday! I can't believe I actually won! It's much appreciated. 73 de KN4WNM
UHF Only. Recently returned to the air after 15 years quiet. All my 2 meters are 25 + years old, and never been on 440 bands! Enjoy your videos, helping me get back up to speed. KE4LCZ Holton, 73 from Kentucky!
Brian: I really appreciate your enthusiasm, especially for QRP operation. Been licensed since 1954, but just found QRP about 10 years ago when I retired. Keep up the good work! Jack, W8TEE
Great video! I am in the process of finding a place where I can take my Technician exam that is secluded and not constantly full of people. 73! I would use the bf8hp on only uhf but I don't have a callsign yet lol
Brian, just wanted to take the time to leave a message for you. I always ENJOY your video's, keep up the great work. What I like the most is how you're trying to get others interested in this great hobby. Thank you.
Christian W9LVI
How cool, I can hear you hearing me make contact with KV0I around 10:47, N4NFM. Good luck QRP'ing!
Brian, I enjoy the videos! Thanks for what you do. 73!
Thank you for showing that these attempts don’t always work. I’m a newbie and expected some challenges but was surprised that the learning curve is much steeper than I expected. Like they say the license is just a license to learn! I just found your channel and appreciate your honesty.
Low power can be a real challenge especially at solar minimum. It makes it much more special when you make a contact on another continent tho.
Great video, thanks for sharing
great video. thanks for explaining things step by step.
Love your videos. You inspired me to get my amateur license! Can't wait for the epidemic to be over so I can find an active testing center.
That’s awesome. Hope to catch you in the logbook someday.
Same, I was going to get it before this all started but it was to late, I’ve been trying to get into a remote testing session but they keep filling up. I’m now going for my tech and general at the same time.
KJ7NDZ.... UHF only.... All the way, as a new ham... at the worst time ever... I have no club and no Elmer to look to... so UHF is the only thing I've been able to make contacts on.... I love the parks on the air videos that's my goal around here in Las Vegas... Keep up all the videos, nice to see your still going... Stay safe 73.....
Am I the only girl watching this?? Btw. Great content, starting to have an interest to get a ham radio because my brother had one and he tried to get an images from ISS and it was a success. And want to try it by myself too. Do you have any recommendation what to get?? Would love to hear what you recommend. Thank you! Stay safe! 😊
Thank you for making these videos. I’m 69 years young and studying to take both Tech & General tests as soon as testing begins again so obviously no current call sign and no ability to xmit but would love to be at least listening while I study ....... so I understand UHF only. Dave
Hey Dave, never too young to start. lol I’m 27 years old and got my license in January. Grab the ARRL official Technician book and go to eham.net for practicing the exam. You’ll be ready in a week for the exam, month at most. Best of luck! 73 Joe
Word of advice, get the Wouxun KG-UVD1P and only use the extendable antenna for your first entry level radio. The smaller antennas put out lots of reflected energy back into the radio. The Baofengs are crap.
KI5GUD UHF ONLY. Good man and good ham Brian!
59 and "please repeat again" 🙃
Anyway, your radio looks interesting. Sad, that it's only HF. I like to have all in one.
Helpful and interesting -- thank you!
UHF only, KK6GLJ, Long Beach, CA. Great video.
Found your channel and then the shocker that you war able to reach someone in Slovenia over the ham radio 👍. Guess that's a coincidence, I want to start with ham radio but don't have my ham license yet and I definitely want to test the Beofeng. Will subscribe and best regards from Slovenia.
KJ7LTQ UHF only. Another great video thanks for the wonderful content
Thanks. N4EWT. Don’t need the UHF radio but glad u are donating it!
KD9OKE UHF only. Great videos! Keep up the good work!
UHF ONLY - I'm just getting into the hobby and have been watching your videos. I'm going to get a BaoFeng radio as soon as I can afford it. Thanks for the helpful information to assist obtaining my FCC license. Kerep up the great informationals. I'm aware I don't qualify for your giveaway but I'll be into the hobby soon!
KA8JUN UHF only. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
KE0ZSN UHF only! New ham just got both tech and general. Love the videos!
Welcome to the hobby.
Tech and general at the same time? Show off. Hahaha
Nice job! I also took general same day, not so lucky here. 73
Wasn’t a fail! You operated. All good! UHF Only (because I watched to the end!). 73 de K2CJB
Brian, you may want to put QRP in the title (as well as video keywords) so people can find it easier. Thanks for making this video! 73 de W3DJS in Dacula, GA
N6MKW - UHF Only. Also, good job throwing that rope. Sometimes I make it on the first try, other times it multiple. LOL.
Great video. KC3HJV UHF only
Hey! Get a zebco real and a sinker. Attach a sling shot on the stick. Run the sinker. To the sling shot zapp the line/sinker flies over a branch. And drops near the ground attach your dipole hoist it up when dune cut and run he he kv4li
I have found it useless to attempt contacts at QRP level in the first hours of any event. Wait until the furor dies down and the big stations have all contacted each other and they NEED more contacts. It's the way I have made Field Day contacts with my 5 watt FT_817ND for past Field Days.
Good point. True.
Very true. That's been my experience also.
Good reception. Update us on how the 7300 worked with the antenna.
UHF only W3RRM
Thanks Brian - 73
Go Gators! KG8TRS, Matt . UHF ONLY.
UHF Only. A bad day on the radio beats a good day at work! 🎧 Miy address in QRZ is not yet updated but my email address is correct. I did enjoy the video.
UHF only :-) 73. DF6PA. Nice Video. QRP can be a hard job sometimes. But it is always fun. 73 Stephan
Hi thanks for a great video. UHF only. DJ0NC
KE4SJM UHF ONLY. I sent you an email about four month ago, when I became active again in ham radio, about my old AT&T truck that I got at auction. You asked me to send you some pics. I still need to do that. I did go to HRO and asked about all the coax ends and antennas that were still on the truck when I bought it. I finally installed a mobile 2 meter. I’ll sent you some pics soon.
Mine is the pixie 2. Wire and math and and a good set of ears. And a nine volt radio.battery kv4li.
KC3OZD uhf only. Love the vids. I'm from GA.
KI5GWQ. Thanks for the great info. UHF only....
Cool radio UHF only N6KV
Now I know what my fist project will be😉. I have been licensed 1 week now and have yet to make first contact with my HT, a UV-82 that I received a couple's days ago. 73!
KJ7NOP
UHF ONLY
KN4YLT UHF only and Go Gators!
Have greatest interest in QRP and manpack options as find it most suitable to potential real world uses as well as hobby use. I am curious what other trancievers would you recommend for such uses? one of major concerns or points would be battery power and weight vs current draw and output power no? thx . been watching many of your videos like your very straightforward approach .
Previously I had yaesu FT-817ND, but I found the battery insufficient and I had to pack a tuner or be stuck on a single band. A lot of people like the Elecraft KX line. For the features, price, size and weight I really like the Xeigu. I know the Elecraft is a better radio, but that price difference.
If you are serious about size and weight, you need to learn CW (morse code). There are seriously small and light CW only radios.
@@HamRadioInAction Thx so much for quick reply and although I"know" cw( but barely as my use was more academic at the time as not a true commo or signalman but grunt with some extra skills haha ) amongst other types of linear pulse type comms even tap codes etc. but need much practice to be proficient wpm wise. That's definitely where my interest would be . There is much carry over from my backround in Amateur comms but not all of course. field expedient antenna construction , propagation and methodology definitely apply .Thanks again will be binge watching many more of your videos. Btw I have made many comms on 5 watts albeit with a whole lot of precut slash wire over distance so this would be a nice throwback but also very usable knowledge to have especially when well practiced.I will further research your recomendations.
VA2LDN uhf only. Love your Channel.
Thanks for the video Brian! It was a good introduction to amateur radio, making it very approachable. I will listen out for your call sign during the Georgia QSO party next weekend and maybe I can get a contact with you from Indiana! : ) Will you have a favored band or mode next weekend?
They shortened it to Saturday only. I'll probably try my luck on single side band 15, 17 and 20 meters anywhere I can find an open frequency and depending on openings.
@@HamRadioInAction Very good. I'll keep an ear open for you. Good luck!
(I'm in Roswell. Just heard you on the local repeater.) (I think!)
that was me.
I wanna make a dipole out of two 50 ohm lightbulb. If the lightbulbs are 50 ohms, do I need 50 ohm coax?
DO1CWK from DL. UHF usage only!
Thanks Brian for this another interesting radio. By the way, I have passed my Ham exam but licence is being delayed due to the lockdown. Meanwhile, I am seriously looking for a portable all in one (HF, VHF, UHF) with at least 50 watt output in the HF bands. Hope you will be able to guide me.
Thank you
Can't help you with the radio recommendation. I've only ever used the FT-817ND all in one, but I cannot recommend it and it's only 5 watts.
Look at the Yeasu FT-857D. All Bands All modes 5-100watts
@@neubert500 Hope it is light and portable. Thank you!
@@shandybrandy5407 It is slightly larger than my FT-817ND and not TOO heavy! My son has one and loves it, I have the larger FT-897 and smaller FT-817. Good Luck!
Oh well, studying for my Technician now.
Good luck. Study a bit of general too. You can take both tests at the same time with no additional cost. Who knows you might walk out with both.
KS9DX I would use UHF only.
How do you choose the frequency for the dx? Scan and then try a qso after finding some action or something else? Thx! 73 from Brazil
I look for a strong signal calling CQ. They are most likely to have a great antenna pointed at me to pull my weak signal out of the noise.
KJ5PEM UHF only thanks for the videos I am a new general got a new x5105 working make some contacts if you have any advice
QRP is all about the antenna and patience. If you are interested in digital modes, you can make plenty of contacts on FT8, which was designed as a low power mode. I find I make the most SSB contacts during contests. Just make sure you visit the contest page, so you know the proper exchange. www.contestcalendar.com/weeklycont.php
KJ7NAW, UHF only.
Another great video. Did you double check that the radio had the internal mic selected?
I did. Not sure why I wasn’t getting out.
@@HamRadioInAction That's the bit I actually like about operating QRP. It's like fly fishing vs. chucking a stick of dynamite into the river. 👍
@Ronan Cantwell It's the best when you hear your callsign come back from that DX station.
Good luck next time on QRP. WU6P UHF-only.
Hey Brian! Are you using a Nagoya NA-771 on your UV-5R?
Diamond.
UHF only - I can't take the test! Stupid corona.
