Watching your video and review, I decided to get one myself. I am impressed! Solid construction for sure. Unlocking it to access VFO mode took a little bit after searching. All works well! However, I must be missing the page to add/delete channels in the manual. So now the search for that. Overall I am happy with it. Thanks for the tip!

KI7BSL here. I too have replaced both of my Baofeng radio's, and I also went with a TYT, but I went with the UV8000E, 10 watt, radio, Dual band, dual watch, and even dual band repeater. Cost me about 80 dollars but it came with all sorts of extra's. Two antenna, Charging cradle with wall plug and car plug. Programming cable, a 3600 mAh battery. Even its own programming software, but Chirp handles it now. Its a great radio and I run a 18.8 inch Abbrree antenna on it. I am able to hit repeaters with it, that my Baofeng F8 wasn't able too. Have fun, stay safe and 73's.

@@oldtwinsna8347 It can be if your antenna is tuned to 1.0 SWR on the frequency your using. On a local repeater frequency I use, the SWR is 1.02, and power output is 9.98. So if I could tweek the antenna to 1.0 SWR on that frequency, I would get ten watts

Received the radio today, receiver is very sensitive and appears to have excellent selectivity as well. Unlike 'other' low cost HT's the UV88 is unaffected while sitting next to my computer monitor, I am impressed. Audio is clear and can be very loud. Programming can be done fairly easy via the keypad after a slight learning curve. (Read the manual) For the price I give the radio 5 stars plus!

Okay, update time. I've had this radio for about two months now. It has become my 24/7 radio. I picked up a second, 3200mAh battery from BuyTwoWayRadios after I got it. I change the battery each night before bed. I've run longer that 24 hours, but it just makes for a good routine. I keep this radio on me always. Sometimes on the belt, but usually just slipped in my shirt pocket. I've even used it as Net Control on our Sunday night net. I have no problem hitting our repeater with a clear signal in and out. I can hook it into my Tram through the glass antenna on the van and still talk to the repeater 15-20 or more miles out. My TYT 8000E just kind of sits lonely anymore. I have the VGC N7500 mobile in my van now, but the UV88 still goes along for use away from the vehicle. After two months of pretty much continuous use I love this little radio. I have 10 HTs total. This is the goto radio. Well worth the money and a bit more.Thanks again for telling folks about it and for the discount.

I have had a TYT md-390 uhf for about 3 years. It’s pretty bulletproof and I really dig it. I use it mostly for DMR.
I can't speak for the TYT UV88, but I have the TYT UV8000E that has 10 watts on VHF and does crossband repeat. It also uses the Kenwood pin pattern for speaker mike/programming cable. It's about double ($79.99) and comes with two antennas. With the taller whip from day one I had people in our club asking if I was on a base or mobile on the repeater. Before I got my mobile for the van I was hooking it to Tram through the glass antenna and working 30 miles away. I even run the the weekly net when it's my turn with it from inside the house on the whip and a BTECH QHM22 Platinum speaker mike (around $23). Always reports of a good signal. So no surprise the little TYT is doing well for you. After the TYT, the Baofengs (still have 2) are just kind of gathering dust or being programmed for limited, specific use. My TYT came with a good manual written by an a native English speaker. I've been impressed by TYT so far. I'll have to check out the UV88 as a backup/go bag radio Sounds like it's keeping with my experience so far with TYT. Appreciate the video. 73 K2WLF/WQZW588

Welcome. This is Frank SP4TT. This strange pickup noise is normal with these models. I had similar Baofeng P15UV and TYT TH-UV98 devices and they all have the same problem. I just bought a Baofeng BF-A58 which has no such problems and the received signal is clear without any unpleasant sounds. 73!

I have been watching all videos about ham radio and decided that I would like to give the hobby a try. And so, thanks to this video in particular I just ordered this TYT radio. I figure that even if I decide that I don't like the hobby down the road, it sure didn't cost me a lot of money to find that out.
I am totally new to this. I've never operated a ham radio, and I don't know anyone who does operate a ham radio. I'm completely flying solo into this adventure. And so just so you know, I'm a new sub to your channel and I'm hoping to learn a lot from you.

Congrats on the new radio. I might look into that one also. I was almost tempted to get the Boefeng. I am knew to this world. I just been researching this Ham stuff. I purchased a ham license prep test. This all happened yesterday. So im very fresh. i’m looking to get the best bang for my buck. As money is tight. I want to start studying for my technicians test. I looked up a local club in my area that administers the test but because of the coronavirus I think they canceled the test. Pennsylvania is still on emergency shut down. any tips would be appreciated I’m learning and equipment thanks.

Hey man thank you for sharing the video I never thought I would get used to those radios from 30 years ago but I have a change of heart they have really advanced in a better quality ahold of quite well compared to the name brand yes I really beginning to grow on them there's a few manufacturers out there that I really like that are coming out of China I think they offer a lot of features compared to your name brand lake GPS things of that nature we thank you so much for sharing your 🌞

@@Ebu_Cehil_El-Fakbadi Some of the HD1 units had a very low microphone problem. It was that bad that in one update they turned the mic gain up to max to help it out but this never helped in my unit. I am oftem told my voice is very quiet. It now stands on my shelf gathering dust! I would like a Yaesu ft3d ...good reports and maybe a more mature company to deal with.

I have a suspicion in a future video there will be an oscillator test on this. ( I would love to see it). In the video I picked up on ”I know for a fact” it has a clean signal. I went down that road a few years ago I have a Bfang rest radio and no dramas in the UK but wanted a better more professional radio so got the tyt from a silent key sell off also managed to score an IC 701 with speaker and power pack awesome machine not everyone's cup of tea as its old and clunks as it changes freq but such a solid and great looking radio I had to have it 73's 2E0OOW

I recently bought the uv-5r from amazon for $25. Not sure if the latest generation has the problem of out of fcc spec for broadcasting on harmonic frequencies. I'll have to check it. If I had NOT purchased the uv-5r and known about the TYT, I would definitely have purchased this radio instead. It would be nice to see the same spllover test run on this radio. One other complaint about the uv-5r is the lack of selectivity on the front end. I wonder how this radio compares in that regard. 73
I decided on the TYT TH-UV88 after kowing about the Baofeng UV-5R for a couple of years. I almost bought 2 more UV-B5's coz they are good and I hope the TYTs are as good. The B5's should be able to hold their own even today in a comparison.
A great and inexpensive radio with better receive filtering than a baofeng. Nice modulation and very loud and clear receive! But this radio suffers on bad firmware. I have got my radio with factory firmware 1.27, the main functions was working, but it was impossible to programm one memory channel with DCS on TX and CTCSS on Rx what was needed to work a repeater near my location. The Radio shows DCS and CTCSS, but it doesn't send any DCS when the radio was switched off and on. Every newer Firmware version has the same bug. At least, i was in contact with the TYT support in china, a few weeks later they sent me a link to download firmware 1.40 and since then, the radio is working great! Now i have ordered a big 3.200 mAh Battery and it works the whole week on one charging!

My 2020 Baofeng UV-5R has everything your TYT does now (your old 2016 didnt) passes spectrum and I only paid $26 on Amazon! Oh I have a 2021 BF F8HP 8 watts too and the advantage is everything from the UV P-5R works on F8HP!
Would be a great follow up video if you could show this operating cleanly on a spectrum analyzer, like you did with the BaoFeng UV5R.

Update: Got the radio in today and it's a nicely built little unit. Downloaded the software before it came in and had it set and ready to go. Read from the radio. (Always best to read the first time before writing or so I've been told), Opened my file and wrote the radio just fine. One thing that was driving me a little nuts was switching to VFO mode. Read the post on Two Way Radios site and rolling. Side note: That also opens up the full frequency range for transmit. Use responsibly. ;)

What additional frequencies would there be?
@@cmvb69 It will then cover 136-174MHz. Mind you outside of the amateur 2 meter band you shouldn't be transmitting if not licensed there. However, the 5 MURS channels (1-3, Blue Dot & Green Dot) are in the 151.xxx MHz range (1-3) and 154.xxx MHz (Dots). Our local EMS/FD dispatch is on 174 something just for callouts. I keep that set for receive only on B when the radio is set to dual watch just to listen and our local VHF repeater on A (TX/RX). Also a lot of railroads operate in the 161mhz range. Listening is fine, but don't go transmitting there. On UHF it goes beyond the 70cm ham band up to 470MHz so will cover GMRS. Again, not technically legal to use on GMRS frequencies even if you have a license (which I do) because the radio is not FCC Part 95 certified because it can transmit outside of the GMRS frequencies. If you are licensed and operate clean and proper I don't think you will have someone from the FCC driving around going Barney Fife on you because your 5 Watt HT isn't Part 95. That means keeping low power and narrow band with in the FRS specific frequencies, and operating responsibly across the full GMRS band.
One thing to keep in mind too in regards to transmitting. The antenna on the handhelds aimed at hams is set to resonate for 2 meter and 70cm. Once you go outside those ranges, say into MURS on VHF or GMRS on UHF, you have worse SWR. While the HTs are cranking high outputs you can still shorten the life of your radio my operating there a lot. If I run my TYT TH-UV8000E on high power on a GMRS frequency it gets a lot hotter than if I'm working in either 2 meter or 70cm (usually around 443MHz).
I will be taking my Technician test this coming Saturday. Would this radio be a good one for the new operator to start out on? I found your video very informative and would like your opinion. My thanks and keep up the good work. I’m learning a lot from your videos.
@ham radio in action I have watched some of your other videos and you loved your Baofeng and Im sure it broke your hear to have to switch radios! I wonder is the UV-82HP is the same way.
I couldn’t say for sure, but I wouldn’t put my money on any Baofeng having good filtering. I will still keep mine around for listening and emergencies.
Hey Brian ... Yesterday I watched one of your videos while I was looking for something to relieve the boredom of very slow-paced indoor rowing. Thanks for having an audio track that is sufficient to be heard over the noise of a rowing machine (not all RUclips videos have good audio tracks). Like one of the other commenters said, I like the way you get right to the point, so I subscribed today though I don't yet know if you have or will have any other videos of interest. If you'd like to know what I'd like to see/hear you talk about, one topic is the Yaesu FT-70DR handheld. You could make literally DOZENS of to-the-point videos on that radio, using it with Fusion and WIRES-X and programming it (my choice though I haven't yet tried it is to use RT Systems' made-in-America software & cable for programming it). The reason I mention the FT-70 is because it is the lowest priced and most popular handheld made by Yaesu which will access their digital Fusion & WIRES-X modes, which seem to be the FRIENDLIEST digital modes of all that I've looked in to. 73.

WA6BEQ really love your videos I get such a kick noe days that I’m an old fart just using my HT instead of my antique KENWOOD BASE IN MY SHACK half the time I can’t see the dials fast enough to listen anymore ,eyes are shot had a friend PGE my kenwood and my yeasu HT s for me can see those panels pretty good and all I have to do is put them in scan and I’m golden can’t talk to far with out reaperters but it getting harder to find any body new to talk to I think we are a dying bread . Everybody thinks that nothing can happen to there dam cell phones ., some day if repeaters stay up people will be begging to talk 2,3,4-1000 miles without a Cell phone and then the government will take our shit also ,so keep up the good work my friend

A straight up how-to video is a little off brand for this channel, but since I endorsed this particular radio, I will consider it.
I didn't know about the harmonics of the baofeng. What I want to know about the TYT is the front end. My Baofeng when you put ANY other antenna on it, the front end can't handle it. Might as well turn it off. I did some testing and I can transmit very well, but won't hear anything back. I love the price of the TYT radios, but I'm nervous about buying another crappy front end.

Thanks for the video! I actually had just ordered a Baofeng on Amazon right before I saw your video, so I cancelled it and got the TYT from another vendor. I looked on the TYT website for the software but could not see any that says TH-UV88. Can you please tell me what I should download to program it? I am brand new to this. I tried to figure out how to program manually but to no avail :( Thanks a bunch.

Based on your advice in this video I ordered two (2) TYT-TH-UV88; and no matter how hard I've tried I cannot load needed frequencies for my area. I even involved TYT directly and after working on it they advised there is no way to load a programming app. SO it was decided I should use the manual method of loading frequencies. I've tried this, researched RUclips vids, read the instructions in the package, (which is piss-poor), gone online and cannot find the sequence to manually load frequencies. Can you help? I hope so. it takes little to overcome the uv-5r. rather it would have been interesting to try uv88 against ft-4x or uv-82

added a link in the description. Just FYI I tend to buy BNC antennas, and get SMA whatever to BNC adapters. BNC can be swapped more often and easier than SMA.

Are you able to program the offset on that radio? I bought the Retevis version of that radio and saw you cannot type the offset.
Bought one of these radios after watching this video. I have had nothing but problems with the radio so far. There is already a firmware update to fix the scan issue, which I can’t get to work. There is a constant quiet hissing sound coming from the speaker when not RX/TX. Almost like squelch is off and radio volume is low. They skipped number 15 in the menu. Not a big deal but annoying. Freqs are not straight on the display / slightly slanted. Programming software is a PITA. I did a quick test of 3rd harmonic interference. It bled over in the third harmonic. I’m not an expert and don’t have an analyzer so maybe it’s in tolerance? The radio has potential but I would wait until it is chirp supported and they fix some of these issues. From my view, it is not a baofeng killer but another cheap Chinese radio with similar issues. You get what you pay for.
tyt uv88 is indeed a good one. I have it. But what do you think of the tyt th-350? TriBand: 2m, 220, 70cm. Unlike the TYT uv88 and most Baofeng which are Dual-Watch receivers. The TYT th-350 has a Tri-Watch Receiver.
Is there anyway to charge this uv88 via a battery bank or optional battery case with AAs? I can't seem to find any info anywhere.

Question : Will any of the cheaper Baofeng programming cables work with these? I see that there's a TYT W13-K cable that's recommended but I can't seem to find one in Canada :/
I used my boafeng programming cable, and it worked. Your results may be different.

Programming cables are just usb to serial cables with the right connector for the radio. Just try to get one with a non-counterfeit chip. I bought mine several years ago on ebay, so I can't provide you a link.
hey Brian i saw your video last night about contacting someone from 2000 miles away and that was my first time hearing about ham, i stayed up all night watching your videos and doing research and i was wondering if the tyt th uv88 came with a charging dock. I dont think I saw one in the description or in the pictures of the product, I was hoping you could tell me. Thanks
Cool. It does come with charging dock. You probably want to get buy the programming cable with it because it’s easier to program with a computer.

I had considered them, but I was holding out for something $40 or under. I would expect the Yaesus to have good filtering, but have no way of knowing for sure.

One note: I got a TYT UV8000E. The whole thing about them only having HAM frequencies is this: they come programmed so that you are only able to input HAM frequencies. However, you are able to go into the software and change that very easily. The antenna that it shipped with was for 132-174 and 400-520 and I have been able to pick up non-ham frequencies. Just keep this in mind that it’s not limited to HAM only for people who want to use the TYT as a scanner.

I scan the Stone Mtn 2 meter repeater and can hear it, haven’t tried to use it from my new QTH. I will be putting up a proper U/V antenna soon so I should be able to hit it. I do use the NF4GA repeaters in Roswell/ sandy springs.

Ham Radio In Action -I received my tyt today. I like it. It would be nice if I could use Chirp to program it. Programming is easy but inputting the 100 repeaters is time consuming.

Can you ‘face panel’ program this radio?
I did buy both of them , they were nice but sadly they were not supported by chirp they said I have to buy the program, and I do not even know if it will work like a chirp . anyway I did add the nova channels, but I could not find a way from transmitting, I contact the company, but no help in fact the told me they do not know what nova is. do you have any idea or other web help with programming Thanks
Hi. I just purchased a TYT TH-UV88 radio. Did you have any issues programming yours or with VFO mode? Here is what has happened to me. The first one I bought would not allow CHIRP programming, or TYT Software programming. Contacted supplier and they sent me another one. That one would work with CHIRP programming, but it would not show the FREQUENCIES, just the CHANNEL NAMES and NUMBER. I found out online that if you turn the radio off, hold the 1 and 7 keys, then turn radio on, it will go to VFO mode and show FREQUENCIES. HOWEVER, let's say there is a FRS frequency on Band A, and a WX frequency on Band B, the radio only broadcasts the WX frequency on both bands. Very frustrating trying to figure this out. The frequencies were manually installed simply to test only 2 frequencies. All the other frequencies were taken out for the testing.
Any ideas what's going on? I contacted the supplier and that is ongoing at the time of this comment. Hope I can figure it out because I really like these UV 88 radios. Thanks.

Hey Brian, new to the hobby myself and I started, like many, with the UV-5R. Did you test your new TYT with the same methods and equipment you tested the UV-5R to see if it has spurious emissions as well? I am assuming so because you say you know for a fact it won't send out any dirty signals, but I just want some confirmation, because we all know what assuming does.
I hope to test mine in an upcoming video soon. I will also test some other new radios.

Maybe, IF your police and fire are still on analog. Most have switched to digital systems like P25, which you won’t be able to hear with this radio. Only one local police here still use analog. Check radioreference to see what frequencies and system your locals use.
The county sheriff still uses analog here, but local PD uses encrypted now unfortunately. Take care and stay safe. Thank you
I've had one for a month or so. Looks and feels nice, but I have had some trouble programming (Could be user error).
Did buytwowayradios provide you any information as to when we might be able to buy extra batteries, battery eliminator, DC charger, or other accessories? This has prevented me from buying more or recommending to friends. These are staple accessories for baofengs, so I would hope we can buy extra batteries, for example, soon.

What site did you use to program it ? I seen a website selling a programing site for it for $49 it would give you repeater boom imports and radio reference as well.
buytwowayradios.com said they are getting extra battery packs with their next shipment which could come as soon as next week. They will check on a car charger and other accessories and try to get those as well.
tyt888.com click service and then download. Grab the TH-UV88 software, which includes programming software. Both my baofeng and TYT programming cables work easily.
