Only two days ago i watched your video and changed the fuse then it done it again today..fuse was slightly burnt but not dead had to jump the starter motor instead does this mean starter is dead, came up with battery low so cud be that or the blue relays in fuse box, please advise on tips
If the fuse is ok then I'd check that there is power getting to the starter solenoid- smaller of the two wires. It should be live only when the ignition button is pushed and the car goes into its starting procedure
I have similar problem, but when I press start button many times then starts. Sometimes start at first, and sometimes on 15th. Its solenoid bad? 1.6 petrol 74kw
You'll need to do a test on the solenoid. Pop a tester on it, to check power. It should register as no power, then get a friend to press the start button. Assuming it does not start and there is then power, then yes, starter is sticking. This is generally when the Fuse blows. If there is no power then the fault is the relay or the switch. You can test the switch quite easily, or locate the relay and see if power is getting there when switch is pressed. Obviously these tests only work when it does not start, as if you press the button and it starts then there's not going to be a fault showing
Thanks for that,my daughter has a 2010 mk3 and we are having ongoing problems with battery drain during lockdown.Bought a new battery travelled up to Richmond went to jump start and starter just make a clunking sound.Do you think this means the solenoid is OK,and the starter has gone ?
Have the same issue. Fuse doesn't look blown but I replaced it just in case, but no effect. Renault Scenic 3 1.9dci.Any poimters as to what I should try next? Mind you, this model has the started down low, somewhere above the DPF filter, so its not accessible for the wire trick. I would have to lift the car up, and and to try and access it from below somehow.
That may well be the engine I had in my 2002 1.9dci, or similar and cannot for the life of me recall where the starter was. I think I'd try and link a wire across and see if it starts to get an idea f the issue is motor or before the motor
age causing it to stick intermittently resulting in drawing too much current and blowing fuse. In the old days you'd turn a key and if it 'clicked' you'd release the key and try again, thus no fuse fitted. Today, you press a button and the car takes over and holds starter on, it does not realise there's an issue, so they added a fuse to the system as a safety measure
Please be kind to help :) Mine starts exactly like in your video, no problem. I changed the fuse but when I tried to turn it on, it started to make a sound like starting and then failed again. It only starts with the tiny cable. Looks like the fuse was blown again. Appreciate your help
Hi mate if you have a blown fuse for the starter motor does this mean the car would never start? I ask this because I am having an intermittent issue starting mine, the battery is brand new so it can't be it. Do you think my starter motor is failing now?
The fuse protects the solenoid circuit. Back in the old days we had a turn key, if the starter 'clicked' you'd release the key and try again. Thus the fuse was not seen as needed. Now we push the button and the car takes over, sending power to solenoid. It does not register the 'click' which is the starter sticking, so it keeps the power on, burning out the solenoid wire, so they popped a fuse on the circuit. So a starter fault is usually shown with a blown fuse. If it's intermittent but not blowing the fuse then I'd check connections, then give the solenoid a tap when trying to start. A sticking or faulty solenoid should not blow the fuse, I think.
So after a few weeks I changed the starter motor and since then it's not blown a fuse. Conclusion- solenoid sticking, drawing too much power and fuse blowing. Hope that was helpful
Im having a nightmare with my megane lol. I have checked all fuses, the battery is brand new but i crank but nothing. I tried to bridge the starter and it still doesn't start up. Do you think my starter has completely gone? Any help would be massively helpful.

If the solenoid is clicking when you try and start from the button- as in start it normally- then it sounds like a jammed motor. The click at the motor should be the solenoid engaging the motor's teeth onto the flywheel teeth. If you power the motor direct and it won't turn then it sounds like it's stuck. Old test was to power it up and thump it with a bar, hoping to jog it into life. Another method- assuming the solenoid is engaging - (getting a click at the starter), is to pop it in gear, try and start then rock the car (assuming manual gearbox) as this will use the engine to spin the starter.

I thought you weren't meant to put the black cable on a negative terminal on a dead battery? Could you please advise?
We've not actually shown the battery on this. Please clarify your comment as I do not follow.
Vyřešil jste problém ?
where did you get the wire from?
just a length of house 'earth bonding cable' - it's pretty good bit but a jump lead can work, just bulky and clips make hard to get in
So after a few weeks I changed the starter motor and since then it's not blown a fuse.
Conclusion- solenoid sticking, drawing too much power and fuse blowing.
