    Thank you for posting this video, I have an 2004 Roadking making the same noise. I tightened up the compensator nut and if seemed to fix my noise.

    Harley bigtwins are famous for doing that. A good practice for when that takes place is to also check the stator rotor and make sure that the splines are still there. A loose compensator nut can cause for those splines to get sheared off.

    I like that you're open about this all being largely new to you. However, the comments, with the odd exception, read like the blind leading the blind. Buy a factory manual and subscribe to a reliable forum such as Harley Tech Talk (don't start an oil thread...). It's a rabbit hole sometimes but satisfying to fix your own bike and know it's been done right. As for RUclips I like Pacific Mike for the older bikes, and Brad the Harley Wizard for newer. These guys will teach you a lot about good practice. All the best.

      Cheers. Whilst I am new to Harley's, I am not new to car restoration and building classic Pontiac and jaguar engines etc. You are very right to never talk about oil! 😂
      The other one, is to never show my lathe, working on my lathe or anything I made there, as there is always a lathe expert out there.
      I just got a Honda CB chopper from 1982, I'll get that posted soon as well. So I appreciate all the help I can get!

    I had to ride my bike one time. Almost four hundred miles with the loose compensator it only seemed to rattle once you would stop, but as soon as you got on the highway, it was pretty good, no loss of power but after a couple days it Wouldn't start anymore loose comneed to Torque specific

    This is a common occurrence, that the bolt is loose because Assembly people dont take care on many Items, They think they can toss a spring pack on the cam and gear assembly, hit It with the torque wrench ( ONE TIME ) AND DONE.. nope not right..If the ramps are off center and you torque the nut 155 - 165 on some 150 on some 140 on some, but the point I have is after you torque them once, and throw all the bolts and cover back on finish up and THEN start It oops there's that clank clank...take the cover back off and low and behold.. the nut is now loose .torque It again, put the cover on with 4 hand tight bolts dont need the gasket yet..start and kill It a couple times..back to the nut.. If Its still torqued correctly now you can put everything back together PS always put a couple of drops of red locktight on the nut first.

    Did it sound clanky in real time? Mine does it off on idle and constantly on higher idle

    Too bad you don't have more comments - this is a great bike, period. Your bike doesn't look to be vibrating too much or you are making it look smooth by holding the bars. I have a similar thing I am investigating. I have checked bars, forks, spark, air and I am thinking all that is left is something that "randomly" came loose inside. It vibrates now like one of those cheap motel beds you put a quarter in, but a while ago it fixed itself and it was smooth but sounded great, so I need to get back to that. I don't have any sound like that, and, other than the vibration it pulls great; however, I am determined to figure out where this vibration has come from.

      Obviously I am no expert. But have you confirmed the rubber engine mounts are ok? Also check the exhaust, all along the length.
      In the past I have used a screwdriver to my ear like a Dr with a stephoscope to track internal noises down.
      Its hard to hear as there is so much going on with a Harley! 😎

    • @ToddEdmondson

      @@RJ67. Yes I solved this issue on my bike. I was between the compensator and the ignition. I went to harley and bought oil and a gasket then took the side chrome part off - about 12 bolts and took a good look at the compensator. I took it off and it seemed okay, nothin obvious. ruclips.net/video/NHmYLnRgYhM/видео.html I had to buy the large socket to get it off and also it requires a significant torque so I put some thread lock on and pulled for my life and it clicked at like 130-150 ft/lb. then put the new gasket on and filled it all up with oil and once I got on the road and gave it some gas it balanced out like a waterski lake boat on a sunday morning. Here is what it looked like when I took it apart. ruclips.net/video/iagNG9prrBY/видео.html It wasn't difficult, you just need to make sure that compensator is tight. I also confirmed all my ignition connections to the ignition pack under my set were tight and the dials were correct.

  • @JdMarlow85
    @JdMarlow85 2 года назад +1

    I Have a 2012 cvo softail. I just had the brakes and tires replaced. The mechanic told me that my compensator nut was loose or starting to get loose. It kinda makes a rattle when you shut the engine off. So I want try and tighten it myself. What are those steps you were talking about? you said you had to put them somewhere in order to tighten that nut? and basically I will need fresh oil and maybe a new gasket. right?

    • @harleydavidsonbeginner5428
      @harleydavidsonbeginner5428  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, worth replacing the oil. I didn't need a gasket, but you may. I got the little steps from eBay, the steps lock in, you will see they only fit one way. Good luck with it. Let me know how you get on. There should be loads of videos showing how to do it, if not, you should make one and show us how you did it. 😀

      @@harleydavidsonbeginner5428 so I can just take that bolt out and add some thread locker and retorque it down? As long as their is no damage to then should be ok? But if I do have to remove the compensator and all that I have to pull out the chain and clutch and all that with it right? I couldn't just take the compensator stuff out

    About reusing gaskets...the easier it is to get to the more likely to reuse it if it's in good shape. Outer primary gasket sure! Head gasket forget it!

      I would say its a medium fix. It does need specialist tools, knowledge and a bit of research.
      An easy fix would be more like adjusting the clutch, swapping out a saddle, changing a battery.
