    Well, that answers the question, "can you stop a bullet with your bare hands"? Yes, as long as it's not fired from a gun! Actually, I'm surprised that there wasn't much more force from just the cartridge. Adding the barrel captures a LOT of energy.

    • @OldManMontgomery
      @OldManMontgomery 2 года назад +2

      Most affirmative, Mr. Oakes. Even a short barrel adds quite a bit of pressure build up and direction to that pressure.

      @@GrantOakes Correct! I seem to recall some attempt - cannot solidify it at all - where a cartridge case (not a normal cartridge we would think) was developed to have a neck long enough to act as a barrel and the casing was made thick to contain the pressure. Then the inventor realized he was working on a brass, disposable percussion something or other.

    Years ago I ordered a, chambered for .22 calibre long rifle barrel and experimented with firing the cartridge off just by loading it into the barrel chamber and hitting it with a regular weight contractor's hammer. The round fired well with no signs of pressure problems and where I pointed it that would be where the bullet went since the barrel section was rifled and chambered for .22 calibre long rifle. It made for a deadly weapon without the weapon. It only worked with rimfire cartridges as the hammer struck the entire rear of the cartridge. This was the early 1970s and .32 long rimfire was still available so, I was also looking for a company to chamber a barrel for this one.

    That is the first time I have seen this simulation done correctly. Everyone asks the question what will happen if a bullet fires outside a barrel, but instead of doing it like you did, they just drop the bullet in a frying pan. Even the legendary Hickok 45 did a lame job of trying to simulate it with a frying pan. Good work.

    I was surprised the bullets did the damage they did, I was expecting less. We used to shoot 22 LR at steel plate targets from maybe fifteen feet away. They would pop, the brass would often fly a little ways away and the bullet would be withing three feet of the plate that was about five feet off the ground. So basically they just fell to the ground. This experiment was different since the cases were held in place, Very interesting.

    I had some distant early teen cousins that got together at a family reunion and were throwing 22lr down hard on a sidewalk to make them go off. The boys were in a circle around the spot where they were exploding the cartridges with their backs facing the bullets to see if anyone got hit. The boys fathers found out and then they got to feel real pain. Mid 1960's when parents were still parents and boys, boys. I was 5 or 6 but had enough sense to keep my distance especially when the dad's did their dad stuff.

    Just watched the video episode of the same routine but firing a .45 ACP (hardball) round. Intriguing. I did not the apple and the watermelon was penetrated to roughly the same depth.
    The lack of penetration on the gel glove and the Coke can is likely attributable to the flex and rebound of both objects. They gave a bit, then snapped back. I also noted the rear hollow the .22 LR bullet was flared a bit. A condition noted in short barreled arms.
    I would love to see these rebounds and and the flight of the projectile in the atmosphere without spin stabilization. Maybe the Slo-Mo guys would farm out their 'gazillion frames per second' camera?

    Yo that's cool although it sucks now because the bullet doesn't get as much velocity compared when it travels through a barrel where it has a bit of time to speed up more on the barrel due to the air pressure also with it being outside the air pressure only makes it faster to a certain point until the air inside the bullet can travel outside where it will depressure quickly and for that reason the bullet itself doesn't get as much velocity
