      Yeah it seems like the casing is being pushed back into the small groove, in effect surrounding and somewhat stabilizing it, sort of like a very, very short barrel. It would be interesting to somehow see it fired but without the bracing/stabilization. Like maybe it being loosely held by a vice and then struck with a pin? I’m sure the case would go flying but I’m curious how much less speed the bullet would have in that scenario

    Amazing how much forward momentum is lost because the forces are basically going out in every direction instead of being concentrated in one direction. It reminds me of how I had heard an internal combustion engine described as 'a series of controlled explosions'. As always, such a cool video and I am sure many of us have often wondered what would happen without a barrel. Cheers

    wow the 9mm seemed much more powerful than the .22 or the .45!

    • @normanmccollum6082
      @normanmccollum6082 2 года назад +5

      Bullet is around half the weight of .45, probably more than half as much powder, that results in more velocity/energy in the circumstance of having no barrel/chamber. That's my theory anyhow.
      Try a 7.62x25 Tokarev, might out-perform the 9x19 in this scenario. Basically just as much powder as 9x19 but smaller and lighter projectile. Ought to, in theory, result in more velocity/energy/penetration. That or maybe the smaller projectile 'catches' less of the uncontrolled explosion behind it thus resulting in less velocity/energy/penetration? I dunno, and I doubt I'll ever know unless Mr. Michal takes another trip out with his dandy little contraption, some 7.62 Tokarev, a fake hand, an apple, a watermelon, a can of Coca Cola, and a slab of wood.
      Can even use his 9x19 base; 7.62x25 is basically 9x19 but with the casing lengthened by 6mm and necked down to .30 cal instead of .35 cal. Similarly, .223/5.56 is basically 9x19 but with the casing lengthened by 26mm and necked down to .223 cal. One more; .308/7.62 Nato is basically a .45 ACP with the casing lengthened by 28mm and necked down to .308 cal. If memory serves, .357 Sig is basically .40 S&W necked down to .35 cal (9mm).
      I fancy the idea of developing my own ammunition someday once I get to America and tinker with some of my own designs. Y'know, just for funsies :D FREEDOM!

      @@normanmccollum6082 also .45 is meant to dump its energy, 9mm? Not so much

    • @normanmccollum6082
      @normanmccollum6082 Год назад +1

      @@aviationist1018
      I do not believe that .45 is meant to 'dump its energy,' and I'm pretty sure that .45 ACP has quite similar penetration to 9x19. There were tests done by Police in relation to various different rounds, particularly in terms of penetration. There's a reason the FBI wanted to upgrade from 9x19; during that one shootout, what was it, Miami Dade or some such thing? They shot a suspect in the side, I think it went through the arm and into the side of the chest, perhaps through some lung tissue but didn't reach the heart. The fight carried on, lives may have been lost, but if that bullet had gone just a BIT farther then the fight would have been over. Thus, 10mm was developed. Well, either developed or adopted, if I'm not mistaken.
      Ultimately, personally, I don't perceive a whole lot of difference between .45 or .40 or 9mm. They're all in the same class from my perspective. .45 may be the best cartridge for suppressed shooting. 9mm is the best of the three in terms of ammo-weight (so you can carry more) and capacity due to its size (superior magazine capacity or the same capacity but smaller mags). If comparing apples to apples, maybe .45 ACP with JHP projectiles can produce the biggest and most devastating wounds of the three. With non-expanding FMJ, I suspect .45 still punches the biggest hole but it's more like that all will have through-and-through wounds, it could be that 9x19 with its higher velocity may cause the most hydrostatic shock while passing through the target but I don't know that for certain.
      In the end, my perspective is that for shoulder-fired carbines or SMGs, .45 is an awful choice because of the weight of the ammo (230gr .45 ACP is VERY close in weight round-for-round to 150gr M80 7.62 Nato, yes, a rifle cartridge) and also either the mags would have to be much bigger and/or the capacity would have to be diminished compared to a .40 or 9mm carbine/SMG. UNLESS, you are going suppressed, in which case .45 is likely the BEST choice despite the weight/capacity issue. If you're limited on velocity (subsonic), then having a bigger/heavier bullet is the only way to have better per-shot performance. 9mm seems like the best bet for non-suppressed shoulder-fired platforms due to lightness of ammo, less recoil, and very good capacity. I know, there's 147gr 9x19 for suppressed shooting, but I anticipate the both 185gr .45 and 147gr 9x19 are both subsonic but that the .45 is more potent.
      As for pistols, 9mm still has the capacity aspect and less recoil, however the ammo weight issue is less of a boon because you're unlikely to be carrying more than, say, 50 rounds of ammo which in and of itself is probably regarded as excessive for most. If you can handle the extra 'oomph' of .45 recoil, go for it. Personally, the extra recoil of .45 makes it more fun for me at the range. There are people who WILL disagree, but I still regard the M1911A1 as being a lovely carry pistol. You are unlikely to find a slimmer .45 pistol, or slimmer .45 magazines. Once I get to America, and I look forward to the day, whenever that may be when I can leave this Canadian shithole where I can't even legally carry PEPPER SPRAY for self-defense (yes, you read that right), I will likely carry a 1911 from time to time. I don't think I'll have a dedicated carry pistol, even though that's probably the best tactic to use. Would a 9mm be better? Perhaps. All depends on the individual. That seems to be a constant in life. So much depends on the individual.

      I disagree that .45 inherently 'causes it to have more damage' than the 9mm, but to each their own. Also, a lot of people can believe something and they can all still be wrong. Majority-consensus does not equate truth or fact or reality. The majority of people CAN be wrong, assuming your claim is correct.
