Larry led the league in defensive win shares 4 different years... he wasn't known for his 1 on 1 defense, but he was certainly no slouch at any moment.

Larry said most of the 3pt shooters at this time were bench warmers. The 3pt shot was almost like a gimmick the adopted from the ABA. He felt confident going into the contests with 💯 confidence in his ability to win.

I had the luxury of seeing Larry Bird live at the Boston Garden during his rookie year. Even in his first year, he was unbelievable. I also had tickets to his 60-point game in New Orleans and was called away for business, which really sucked. I am convinced Larry Bird, in his prime, was the greatest player in the history of the NBA, and I've been watching since 1963. I was lucky to have seen him play in person in his brief but amazing career.

I love Bird I grew up in the era of magic and Bird I loved them both. It was hard when they played to decide who to pull for. Bird played good defense people just never talked about it. 🇺🇸

When Craig Hodges won in 1990 he was asked if his win was worth less because Larry didn't compete. Hodges said, "He knows where to find me." Bird answered, "Yeah, at the end of the Bulls bench."
If you didn't follow the 3 pt contest you might not have any idea who Craig Hodges is.

I’m a retired elementary school teacher. I got tired of the students telling me who were the best basketball players. I asked them if they ever heard of Larry Bird. (I knew they didn’t. They were too young.) I was a computer teacher and I told them to look at their computer screens. First they laughed at the very short basketball shorts. But after they watched Larry Bird play, they couldn’t believe it. 🤣 They thought it was the best basketball shooting they ever saw. The kids couldn’t stop talking about it.

Two great things about this: Larry walking into the locker room (maybe) and saying "ok, which of you guys is gonna be second?" I'm not sure of the exact way that he put it. The second thing is that he does even bother taking off his warm-up top. He's wearing his actual jersey underneath.

I'm an Englishman and I only started getting interested in b-ball after watching, "Last Dance" (sad I know). As a non-biased viewer I have to say Larry B had it all and the comparisons with MJ as the greatest are easy to see. Will to win, clutch play, playing injured, skillz, oh man....the skillz of the Bird. He won three MVP's on the trot. Not even MJ did that. 5 finals in a row. MJ feared him to the point that he said to team mates, "No one talks to Larry, no one". Just like MJ, Bird used trash to motivate him. MJ knew....he knew. Also, not known maybe, Bird has like a 23 - 11 record or something like that against MJ. Yes, Chicago were not good for a few years when "La-Bir" was about but there are games when Bird and MJ faced off and Bird was the man! For me Jordan 1st, and then very, very, very, very close Bird and Johnson with very good cases as to why each on his own, out of those three, could be the GOAT....the rest...well in the words of "La-Bir"...."Who's coming 2nd today?"

  • @MacMc691
    @MacMc691 9 месяцев назад +4

Lakers fan here, I have no reason to like Larry Bird. My teen years were the 80's, so I saw the rise of Magic and Larry, both of who put the NBA on the map*, followed by Jordan. The game was different back then, Larry was already great, if you put him in today's wussified, hand-checking foul littered game, he would absolutely destroy the scoring boards, and especially Jordan. The only thing that eventually slowed Bird down was his chronic back injuries.
One thing to notice when watching Bird's release, notice he uses two hands for the push-off, creating a stronger release and in return creates more distance. Dale Ellis was a pure shooter and how most shooters are taught, Dale was great, but watch Bird's release, you'll notice a major difference.
    * Some fun facts for those out there that weren't born yet or too young. The NBA received very little air time during the 70's and into the early 80's. Games were shown at 11:30pm at night, not live, but tape delayed. The playoffs, most of those were aired in similar fashion until the Eastern and Western Conference Finals, then obviously the NBA Finals, those three rounds were shown at normal times. The rivalry between Magic and Larry, going as far back as college, is what helped to catapult the game, Michael Jordan was the icing the cake. It was finally during the mid 80's that the NBA finally found a home on WTBS, then eventually TNT and now it's all over the place.
Jordan, Bird, Drexler, Dominque Wilkins, the list goes on and on, would destroy scoring records in today's game. Players back then got beat up, see the Detroit Pistons 'bad boy' teams, or the NY Knicks teams, you go into the paint, you get mugged and fouls were rarely called and hand checking fouls didn't exist.
Anyway, great reaction as always, keep up the fun.

there are those, including Danny Ainge, that believe Bird missed some of the early shots deliberately in order to make it more dramatic and interesting. Bird made winning this competition look easy in the previous two 3 point competitions he competed in. It would not surprise me if he did deliberately miss his shots in the beginning to make it more challenging and interesting at the end.

I was in high school in the Harrisburg area of Pennsylvania from 1978 to 1982.....so I'm CLEARLY a hardcore Dr. J & Sixers fan. My friends & I always hated Larry Bird back in those days and talked all kinds of trash about him. It took us YEARS to openly admit we were all secretly in AWE of him. Larry Bird was the greatest player ever and Julius Erving was unquestionably the Funky-Fly-Freshest man to ever handle a basketball. Many have tried to eclipse Bird & Erving in their status & reputation and ALL have failed, including Michael Jordan. DR. J LIVES....!!! 😃

Bird once made a 3 pointer from the right elbow, with a guy draped all over him. But, the coach, which I think was K.C. Jones at the time, had called timeout right before the shot. During the timeout, a play was drawn up for someone else to take the shot, and Bird was animate that it wasn't for him. As the team was going back on the court, Bird told everyone that he wanted the ball right where he had just hit that shot. He told the other team that he was going to get the ball right there again, and he was going to make the shot, again. He did it just like he said.

Hi...love your reactions-- in particular, and among other things, your honesty, fair-mindedness (you're even honest about your biases, which is rare and, to me, admirable), your serious consideration and thoughtfulness about things, and your voice.
Re: Bird-- not sure if you know this, but he had 1,556 career steals, which seems to me ought to give him some kind of credit as a defender. Also. In recognition of his defensive abilities, Bird was named to three All-Defensive Second Teams. I'm not sure if you already know this, and all the rest of the arguments in favor of his getting respect as a defender (his b-ball IQ was a huge asset in his defending, since he was eerily able to anticipate the other teams'/guys' moves, which certainly gave him a defending leg up) and still don't rank him all that highly in defense, or if you (like many who are just beginning to learn, i depth, about his game) just haven't yet run into all the material about his abilities/stats/credits as a defender.
Either way, watching you learn about Bird is an interesting ride. I went through the same thing...all my assumptions got shot to hell when I started really watching him.
Thanks, as always, for the great reactions...and now I'm going back to watching the vid, since I only got to 1:18 when I felt the need to bring up these points about Bird's defensive abilities.

POLO, who's the Goat 🐐 of Basketball 🏀??? Just a suggestion, here are 8 great videos that make suggestions to who is the greatest. Of course everyone is going to have their opinion/favorite. So that you don't have to track them down.
All 8 of these videos are great and about 3 years old. Lebron has the most views and Larry Bird is 2nd out of the list👇.
I personally enjoyed Larry Birds the most. Not only is he in the conversation of who's the goat 🐐. He won Gold 🥇 *(with his NBA Rivals like Magic and MJ)* at the Olympics, became a Head Coach, then went upstairs to the Head Office.... running everything!! Larry's GENUINE friendship with Magic Johnson was awesome to see, on and off the court. Oh yeah, Larry also had *Rookie of the Year* as well 😎

3 point contest is skill and the dunk is style. As of a cerain size any baller can dunk, but that 3 pointer doesn't care about your size or style.

Did you know that Steph Curry lost the 3 point contest 4 times and Larry won it 3 years in a row. Who’s the 3 point king. I know Steph Curry is considered the best but I beg the differ. Larry Bird didn’t shoot 3’s in HS or college so he learned to shoot the 3 when he got to the NBA and you have to compare players to their era. And Larry Bird was better. Just a though lol
