Let me tell a story about how a left lane hog ruined my life:
I got a call late one evening from my GF’s best friend. She told me that my GF was in the hospital about to miss-carry our baby. I looked at my clock and saw that I had exactly 30 minutes to make the last ferry boat of the night to make the 2 hour drive (and ferry ride) to see her in the hospital. I grabbed a toothbrush and a change of clothes and ran out the door!
As soon as I entered the freeway I could see two cars driving side-by-side in the two lanes of the highway ahead of me. They were both going 5 miles/hr under the speed limit and they were literally the only cars I could see on the highway.
They both refused to do anything to allow me to pass for several exits. Eventually I was able to get around them, but apparently the lady who was blocking the left lane didn’t think I should be allowed to pass her, so she called the cops.
I got pulled over, did not get a ticket, but as you can guess, I did not make that ferry because of the delay. I drove all the way there to see the ferry pulling away.
I then had to turn around and drive another 4 hours to get to the hospital and by then, she had already miscarried and was home crying. I wasn’t able to even drive my GF home from the hospital after we lost our baby because some woman felt entitled to block traffic in the left lane.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it entitled Lane hogs. Your actions destroy the lives of fellow Americans and you don’t even care!!!

I wonder how this affects mortality rates? I often have noticed, in Portland Oregon in particular, there's a big crowd of subaru outback drivers that seem to take joy in purposefully slowing others down. I often wonder what medications they are on, and also: they tend to drive with the window shade down 24/7. I often wonder if they have depression issues or simply lack control over their lives, so they want to "take control" over other peoples lives. The ones with the bumper stickers are the worst offenders. Then upon passing them, they tend to do something passive aggressive: horn honks, speeding up, trying to keep up with you in the corners (hahaha, subarus understeer SO BAD when stock, so it's hilarious when they attempt this), flashing high beams, etc.
Prius drivers used to be the worst, but they've been eclipsed by the outback / subaru drivers atleast in the PNW. The Subaru is the "I'm not sure what to buy, I'm risk adverse, I want to "Fit in" (instead of just buying winter tires), type of individuals.

      @STho205 5 лет назад +20

Barry Walker by road design (in non congested or rural four lanes), there shouldn't be people going faster than you if you're in the left lane. You, travelling in the right lane see a slow moving vehicle, say truck struggling up a hill at 60 in a 70,
      1) check mirrors and head check while signalling
      2) move deliberately accelerating into the left lane
      3) accelerate to a comfortable overtake speed
      4) pass the truck and return to the right lane now going about 70ish +/- 5mph
      Here's where the anger starts.
      1) There's a hotrodder far behind you wanting to go 85 but you are in the midst of your safe pass when he catches up, starts twitching, cussing, flashing and had to (horrors) cancel his cruise control. He can just damned well wait for you to complete your pass at the passing speed you have selected, and then he will pass you as you return right at a safe interval in front of the truck.
      Or
      2) you're passing the truck and see several other vehicles a half mile or more ahead and decide you may as well just stay in the left lane...which causes the hotrodders to rightly get impatient and have to pass you on the right, cutting off the truck and almost clipping your bumper.
You guys know that sooner or later you have been #1 or #2. Avoid that.
The hotrodder is a bully trying to act like an ambulance and force others off the road, be it a track fantasy bike, a Tesla, a BMer, a ricer, a Charger/Mustang/Camaro or an Ecsalade. You still must wait your turn, despite the belief you are a Road God.
#2 is the Prius SJW who is trying to select the appropriate speed for the entire highway.
Oh in a traffic jam, just fill all the lanes to stack the traffic symmetrically (emergency vehicles use the shoulder) and keep moving with as safe an interval as possible. Until the jam clears or you reach the obstruction, stay in whatever lane you were stacked into.
Numerous stupid lane changes in a jam only makes the jam take longer, and we all know it.

Then when a rare passing lane appears the guy who is going slow will floor it making sure no one can pass him. Then when he gets back in the twists and turns he go's back to 70 or 80 km an hr. I was crying and panicking and this just made everything worse. You have no idea what the person behind you is speeding for, they could be rushing a loved one to the hospital, trying to get some place to say good bye to a loved one, maybe as to not miss a birth of their child and yes they could just be hauling ass because they love to speed. So many times you go out to pass a few cars and someone else is comes speeding along and immediately is on your ass trying to push you faster. I'll move over when I can, but I won't do 40 over the limit (km/h) to satisfy your need to be ahead of every car you see. Patience is the biggest thing people are lacking on the road, most people know the rules, they just can't be bothered to follow them. There is a complete lack of logic displayed by drivers on American highways. I see a line of cars rolling down the highway in the passing lane, and the travel (right) lane is completely empty. And usually they're not going faster than the speed limit. In those cases, I pass 'em all in the right lane. It's the complete opposite how it's supposed to work. They use the passing lane to travel, and others are forced to use the travel lane to pass. It's how I would expect things to work on Bizarro World.
Driving in Europe is so much better. Most people travel in the travel lane and pass in the passing lane. And if there does happen to be a traveler in the passing lane, when you approach him from behind, he moves over!

It’s the few bad apples in rural areas that are why i think it’s worse here. 2 lane highways and grandma’s going under while passing 10 18 wheelers is a big problem here. Fun social experiment you can try for yourself.
Set cruise control in your car to 2-4 mph faster than the current flow of traffic. Do not adjust your speed.
You will catch up to the car ahead of you.
    Change lanes to pass car.
More often than not the car will speed up when you try to pass them. Most of the time this creates a rolling road block.
Often times, they will speed up to stay ahead of you, but they won't maintain that speed because they don't really want to dive that fast. Not consciously, anyway. They just don't want to be passed.
As long as you keep cruise control on, you will catch them again and again, and they will look at you as you pass them like YOU are the crazy one.
I do this all the time because I commute a ridiculous amount, and this happens constantly. Male drivers, female drivers, black, white, asian, it doesn't matter. People get insecure when they're being passed like it's some kind of race. It's petty and it's despicable how awful we are to each other when there's the slightest chance that someone else might get something before us.

Got the same issue in Australia but obviously the right hand instead. I'm on my green P's in Victoria which means I've done 120 hours driving with a supervisor (parents) and now 1 year on my own. Whenever i get on the freeway i run into an issue where i'm in the right lane passing a slow vehicle in the left. They'll pull out into the right lane themselves to pass a slow vehicle in the left instead of waiting for me to pass them and then overtaking the slow vehicle that was in front of them, this creates bumper to bumper traffic at 110km'h involving myself who's only got about 300 hours driving experience. Another common thing is tailgating on freeways at those speeds mentioned before which leaves no time for reacting or breaking!

Erotikstudio Winkler GmbH it’s different in every state in Australia. In Victoria where I live you need to get your learners permit which is a test you do at their office with 32 questions about road laws, you can read a handbook that has all the state laws. Once you pass that you have to drive on your learners which you can get at 16 and log 120 hours with a supervising driver which is basically someone who has a full divers licence. For example a partner or guardian. Once you turn 18 and have 120 hours logged you need to sit two test. One is a computer test which has videos play of hazards and you click when you would react to the hazard and the other test is a 45 min drive test with an instructor to see you’re capable of driving. Once you complete the test you go on red P’s for a year and green p’s for 3 years which basically means you can drive on your own but with restrictions like no mobile phone use even for gps or banned sports cars. After you finish your P’s you get your full licence

I am a new driver and have had my license for less than a year, this issue is definitely a result of poor drivers education. To get my permit I took a test that I did not study for and passed on my first try (No mention of the left lane being a passing lane on the test) followed by a behind the wheel driving test that consisted of driving around the block and changing lanes to turn once, the whole test took maybe 10 minutes and there was never any mention of the highway whatsoever. In hindsight I should not have gotten my license that easily and should have been properly educated, Thanks to your videos I am now cured of the left lane lunacy

I recently was in Europe 30 years after my last visit there and quickly remembered how much I missed driving on the continent. It was so refreshing to drive where people had lane discipline, used their mirrors, and knew how to drive. In some countries to get a license you have to demonstrate skid control and recovery in multiple weather conditions and can take up to a year before you get the license. In America you have to know how to parallel park. And most drivers only use their mirrors in the morning while shaving or putting make-up on.
If I sound a little frustrated, I am. It really doesn’t have to be this hard to get from point A to point B, just use some common sense, courtesy and for the love of god use your mirrors.

    • @Branbran1993
      @Branbran1993 5 лет назад +4

TheCannonball79 Agreed. No I don’t live in Europe, but the things I see people doing in their mirrors on US highways at 70mph is absurd. On top of them not being able to drive in the first place, now they’re equipping their cars with back up sensors, lane departure sensors, sensors for this, that, and the other. So now they’re fully relying on this equipment and see no reason to use the mirrors like anyone with common sense would. The number of people I’ve had to cut me off on the highway is ridiculous, they’re just looking straight ahead with absolutely no idea that they nearly sent both of us into a full blown spin out on the highway. Had someone who backed into my car last year by doing that..and it was straight behind theirs by at least 8-10 yards!

If you were to ask any of my friends or family they would tell you that I'm one of the most calmest and chill guy they know. But these left lane hogs really piss me off and cause me to have road rage! It doesn't matter if you're going MACH 1 or 2 in the left lane, if someone comes up behind you, YOU MOVE OVER! It's the law! Plain & simple! The worst is when you try over taking them from the right lane and they speed up so that you can't get ahead of them. SMH.
I don't understand why police departments haven't taken advantage of this great revenue stream potential yet. I bet if we eliminate these left lane hogs, we would improve traffic flow by at least 30%.

Police departments should have some unmarked cars to just drive around in traffic without being identified so they can start ticketing these people. I'm so sick of lazy ass cops sitting in speed traps hoping to catch the one person who didn't immediately slam on the brakes as soon as they saw the cop car camped out.

"Better Training" I remember when I first got my license. My driving part of the test was a route that was all right turns with one left turn. Because of the left turn there was only one lane change. A few stop lights and only one stop sign. Nothing else. No parallel parking. Never exceeded 35mph. I look back and think I should have never been given a license. I was not properly trained at 16 and became a better driving through experience. Not everyone develops without the training.

On a road with no intersections speed limits really just don't make sense. If we removed speed limits on freeways and went full Autobahn, then people would learn really fast to stay right unless they are passing. And I'd bet that traffic would disappear for the most part unless there's a wreak on the freeway, but with less heavy traffic (because you can actually pass people) we'd probably see less traffic accidents, and definitely fewer multiple car pileups.
Funny thing, when traffic gets crazy slow I wonder, there's no accident, no bad weather, what's the hold up? Then I pass a cop using a radar gun and as soon as I pass him then traffic speed picks back up again. Nobody wants to get a speeding ticket, so it's funny that a cop sitting there can actually make traffic way worse.
Most accidents on the freeway are due to lane changes, and when faster cars try passing slower cars they'll change lanes more, it's that changing lanes that causes problems. But what if the left lane were generally open? Then people are not likely to safely change lanes for passing maneuvers only, and then change lanes again once they've safely passed. So yeah, I totally agree, speeding isn't as big of a danger as constant lane changes.
