The fact is they would not be in such a hurry if they didn't get stuck behind slow drivers and have to make up for lost time to avoid getting fired from their jobs. The road rules are keep right except while passing.
      Never travel the same speed as traffic next to you.
      Getting in one line and staying there or traveling the same speed as traffic next to you is statistically the most dangerous thing you can do on the road and it is illegal but people feel that as long as they drive under the speed limit and ignore all of the other laws and all other traffic that somehow they're being safe and legal because they're not going over the speed limit.
      But traveling under the speed limit is just as dangerous as traveling over it.
      Traveling 10 ft away from the car next to you is no safer than traveling 10 ft behind a car. Except the car ahead of you is not nearly as likely to hit as brakes as the car next to you is to change lanes.

If people would show a little courteously on the roads that would stop a majority of the tailgating and such which as seen can be equally as bad. If your reading this, spread the word: Slow, fast, pass -- it means, right lane is slow, center is fast, and left is pass. Slow, fast, pass. If anyone here drives on the 410 in Brampton ON and surrounding highways, look out for me. At the moment, I have a black honda civic. Some tips: If your going to flash the high beam, make sure the blind spot is clear for the driver your flashing at. If your a cop reading this, pull over left lane hogs instead of "speeders". 3 more things: 1. When the road is wet/icy, dont go fast. 2. When the traffic is heavy, space out and keep it moving, stop driving bumper to bumper and stopping repeatedly. 3. When the road is dry with good visibility and light traffic, just rip it!! They say, "DRIVE ACCORDING TO CONDITIONS".. it means to utilize your brain and adjust speed, lanes, etc according to "CONDITIONS". spread the word...

    • @inscrutablemungus4143
      @inscrutablemungus4143 10 месяцев назад +2

      Change that to slow, pass, pass and I'll agree with you. *Everyone* should be on the right unless they're passing or their exit is on the left. You go to the middle lane if you're catching up to a car in front of you to pass. If there's already a car in front of you in the middle lane going slower, shift to the left of them and pass both cars. Once passed and when its safe, merge as far right as you can.
      The center lane is also just a passing lane, it's not the cruise control lane for people going a little faster than the speed limit.

    • @shawnbhandal

      @@inscrutablemungus4143 If there's 3 lanes, its safer to stay in the middle lane if your going to drive "FAST". If you want to go slow, you stay in the right lane.
      If you go FAST in the right lane on a 3 lane highway, you will be constantly braking, changing lanes, cutting off merging traffic, etc.

    • @inscrutablemungus4143
      @inscrutablemungus4143 10 месяцев назад +3

      @@shawnbhandal This is actually untrue (even if it seems intuitive). The problem is when you say that you "constantly brake, change lanes, cut off merging traffic". That's not how you pass. You move to the middle lane when you are catching a car (5-6 seconds behind them in clear conditions), not when you're right behind them and have to slow down in order to not rear end them.
      Same thing with merging, if you see an on-ramp with cars on it a few seconds up the road, you can prophylactically move to the middle lane.
      My point is that you should move all the way back to the right unless you are actively passing someone in front. If you're in the middle lane and there's someone 7-8 seconds up the road on the right going slower, by all means stay in the middle, but once you pass them you should merge back to the right lane unless there is someone in front of you. I.e, the default should be staying in the right lane no matter what speed you're going. You can move to the middle to pass/accommodate on-ramp traffic etc., but any such travel is temporary. Once you're finished passing/accommodating, you should merge back right.
      By 'cruising' in the middle lane, you artificially make a 3 lane highway into a 2 lane highway plus a lane for trucks, which is objectively less efficient for the overall flow of traffic. Having driven in both Germany and the US, this is one of the major reasons why German highways are a lot faster and safer.

    • @jasonrekker4328
      @jasonrekker4328 3 месяца назад

      @@shawnbhandalthe law on Ontario highways is that one must obey traffic signs, and as you know the signs on the 400 series highways and QEW say “slower traffic keep right.” Not “slow traffic keep to the right lane.” If you know or should reasonably know that you are being overtaken, you must move to the farthest right lane as is practicable in the circumstances. The problem with drivers cruising in the middle lanes is that they assume they are not impeding anyone. So then you have this common scenario where the right lane is empty, the middle lane has a long file of cars, and the left lane also has a long file of cars, all trying to pass, but the lead car can not move to the right and get out of the way because…all the cars in the centre lane are impeding traffic!
      Cruising in the centre lanes only works if drivers are constantly monitoring traffic behind them, and moving over whenever anyone overtakes them. Which is constantly for most of us. If you are not moving as far right as possible every time someone overtakes you, even if they are in another lane, you are breaking the law. Therefore you should just stay right as it is a lot safer and requires less lane changing.
      The notion that staying right runs you into trouble at on-ramps is nonsense. I use the right lane all the time and it’s never an issue. Unfortunately I’m usually passing in the right lane because people are sitting in the middle lanes.
      Keep in mind the right lane is the safest lane as you are exposed less vehicles as there is only one lane next to you, vs two.

    • @shawnbhandal
      @shawnbhandal 3 месяца назад

      @@jasonrekker4328 You must've not run into any issues in the right lane probably because your driving at the slow speed limit, and/or there's light traffic volume.
      When traffic volume is average, and if one is speeding, its SAFER if they stay in the MIDDLE lane. If necessary, only 1 lane change is required to PASS, not 2 lane changes. The less the lane changes, the better.
      The lead car your talking about should not stay in the passing lane (far left lane) if their not passing. If their passing, then whoever is behind has NO CHOICE but to WAIT. You have to adjust speed based on traffic conditions, I don't care if your inconvenienced if you have to slow down for a little while.

    By putting on your high beems the vehicle in front is NOT able to safely know by seeing if it is safe to move over!!
    And maybe the driver was trying to be safe around the trucks just like the camera vehicle said it was!!

    I'm blown away that people make tailgating comments considering that it is even more dangerous to drive that same distance beside a car on the interstate than it is to tailgate a car. Tailgating is extremely dangerous. If somebody slams on their brakes the only chance you have is being able to outbreak them. However if you're beside someone and they have equal comparable panic situation but they change lanes rather than brake, chances are that you don't have any place to go but into another car.
    Never ever drive continuously and unnecessarily beside other traffic. The law says drive in the right most lane except while passing for a reason. You should not travel next to another car for anything more than the limited period of time that it takes to safely get past them.. This is not my opinion, this is consistent with the law in each state. Drive in the rightmost lane except while passing is a law.
    It is an independent law in each state in the United States. I know that because it's a federal mandate and it was part of my job.
    Now i'm only concerned because of how much impact it has on actual safety so my life is still at risk by everyone that ignores proper, legal, safe, conscious lane usage.

    Still ignoring laying usage law is the biggest problem driving the right most lane except while passing once you get past remove yourself from anything other than the rightmost lane it is the law in the entire United States All of these ignorant drivers saying that they weren't speeding are still breaking the law while they're not passing. Congested traffic does often prevent proper driving like that but it's clear from the comments here that people are not even considering lane usage law however they are considering speeding and some other important but far less important laws than proper lane usage as far as safety or traffic flow or price of ticket.
