      Expert Gaming HD On a surface level, I agree. It would be really cool to see those colossi. On the other hand, "design by subtraction" was Fumito Ueda's central design ethos for this game. I understand there was also some development time pressure involved, but 16 colossi might be just the right amount.

      It makes me feel good to see this. I wish I could play a game again like I did back then. With no complaints about the graphics, just the perfect atmosphere and story. No wars, no multiplayer, no people complaining about 60 fps. Of course, time changes. But still, it was something so unique no one has been able to replicate so far.
      Just me and the game, like if I was being told a fable.

      @@buzhichun I know ueda didn't want those 8 cut Colossi to be in the ps4 remake of shadow of the colossus but you ha've to think a lot of fans of this game like me would love seeing these 8 cut Colossi were already made in 3d and some of them were working though some were having issues . One way to put them in the game would be as side content that is only accessible after you finish the game the first time which would not ruin anyone first experience and flow of the game

    Imagine if somehow, the cut colossi could be released, even incomplete or broken or frustrating as hell, as a "dlc" of some sort.

      They could be added as "dreams", similarly to Reminiscence Mode. They make the arena and if you try to leave it the dream ends. It wouldn´t break the story and there would be creativity freedom without the need to include it on the map (which is not quite possible with the current map).

      I love all the chapters, but 2, 3 & 5 are my favorites. With 2&3, we can see the devil's lair leftover stage and maybe it's just my imagination, but the distance mountain shape like a fortress/castle and I kinda hope if it's a location you can fight a scrap Colossus. The dam reminded me of ico, both in 2 and 5. The height, the feeling of distance falling, the abyss, made me wonder if the dam, if really included in the game, can made you get instant get over because how easily Wonder slide down or misteps. Overall, I'm really amazed. You always find something new and exciting from Sotc. It's as if... Wonder's journey is more than what the game provides.

    • @glowaru

      We can't get new colossi, but we can experience the existing ones in new ways. Mirrored World in the PS4 version is a good start, but on top of that you can do honor-rules like "no fur climbing" or "jump stabs only". Recently I've started mixing up all sorts of modifiers like this to create interesting challenges that give new life to the old colossus fights since you have to think about them way differently than before. I've uploaded some videos of this if you wanna see what it's like. To me at least it's the next best thing and worth trying if you want to re-experience the feeling of having to figure out how to beat the colossi.

    Just wanted to say some thoughts while I was watching this vid, excuse me if I get too deep because this vid was making me think all the things. Sorry if I sound pretentious.
    You and those like you find these areas and cut a hole through this veil the game designers put up to hide their left overs. But for us these are hidden worlds. Seeing you run and climb through these remnants, fields of grass and rock, there is this peaceful and ultimately hopeless feeling that washes over you. There is no life here, no trees or birds. Only the sun spilling onto the ground, useless structures, an infinite void drowning the space below you, and your only friend, the sound of wind reminding you there is nothing here, but you can look anyway. As I get complacent with the emptiness, you find this titanic dam, and its all its loftyness and structure and intention, its still hidden away. Could it have once been a colossus who sacrificed itself and embedded itself into the rock? As you speculate what could have been, the sound of wind reminds you it was just polygons and vertices the Gods were too lazy to delete.
    Just wanted to say thanks for making these vids

    • @NomadColossus
      @NomadColossus  6 лет назад +13

      Oh man, what a lovely comment! Thanks so much, that really describes the feeling I get about this game and it's even more intense at these out of bounds areas. Note: I added the wind sound effects from #15's area as it's the closest colossus arena to the Dam, so from my perspective when I was recording the video, all I could hear was Wander's footfalls as he ran over the ground.

    I know many people have a pipe dream about adding in the cut colossi, but of course that will probably never happen. However, I wonder if it would be possible to add back in this dam area at least? I don't know enough about how the inner workings of SoTC are, but if it is possible to create new collision detection, then at the very least an artificial connection to the main map area could be made. If it were possible to insert new models, then a team could feasibly come together to create new graphics to finish the area and add new collisions to make it playable. A path would need to be made to get there from the main map (#15's arena is the only area that gets somewhat close to the dam, so perhaps a path branching from there?) I don't know... this is probably just another pipe dream, but it's so exciting to think about!

    And The Dam itself supposed to connect into ICO's castle? I mean, the texture itself is unique, it looks slightly different from the other building in SOTC. Especially the bridge. It gave me ICO vibe when you run pass into it.

    It seems to me that the Dam would have been a performance nightmare. Judging by the darkened area on the dam, water would come down (and we all know the 25 FPS that game managed on a *good* day), so it's not terribly difficult to see why it would have been cut. That, and the additional performance drop of having a colossus there as well as the very open nature of the section itself.

    Ya really gotta wonder why a dam would be put there. Like to what, stop water from flowing? Why? What would the point be in doing that?
    There were probably plenty of other things that were meant for something in the game that were unfortunately cut due to time restrains.
    Personally, I think two things.
    1: The dam was originally supposed to be an inter actable environment, one in which the player would enter and explore for a little, until they’d find a Colossus.
    Or 2: the player would have to find a way to demolish the dam in order to free a Colossus that was trapped behind it, probably meaning that the dam was built not to try and stop something, but rather keep it away from anyone.

      Ehh, nah. I think the dam was just a cool bit of gothic architecture to walk past on your way to fight something with the name "The Devil". Plus it woulda just been a neat backdrop to the fight itself. This explanation is honestly probably why it got cut though. As a layman casualscum gamer, I most vividly remember the Avion fight because it was "the gothic one". Now if you take note of the gothic architecture of the dam, the gothic nature of the cut colossi that lived next to it, the proximity of this area to Avion's arena, and the fact that his arena was inexplicably flooded... well then I think you can start cobbling together an idea of what they were going for here. I recall from one of Nomad's other videos that this whole area doesn't really line up well with the map grid, & I imagine it's when the developers got stuck trying to fit this arena into the confines of a grid block* that Ueda came in, smacked some heads, and told them not to get carried away, because it was
      1. causing a lag in development
      and
      2. ultimately would have diminished the impact of the Avion fight
      *this area was probably actually made very early on in development and, like the other cut arenas, was probably shoved off to the side of the map while the rest of the world took shape. IIRC Nomad found 3 weird branching paths beyond the Avion arena. I suspect they were trying to clumsily create a route from Avion to Monkey, The Devil, and ??? before the entire development team experienced a collective headache and just scrapped the whole concept. I bet they also had a hard time trying to come up with a good explanation for The Devil living outside the Dam, when a super structure like that would really only be built in order to contain shit inside the valley.

    • @NomadColossus
      @NomadColossus  5 лет назад +1

      One must wonder if the Dam was actually created when the devs developed ICO? It has the same architecture as the 'Gondola' level in ICO... so maybe the Dam was a leftover model from ICO that they put into SotC as a placeholder? Just an idea.

    Amazing as always. Did Wisi recreated or found the collision data somewhere in the game's files?

    • @NomadColossus
      @NomadColossus  6 лет назад +4

      Wisi has responded to your message:
      There are no collisions models for the Dam and the Beta mountains in the game. To create them, the visible models were converted to LWO (Light Wave object) format and then again to collision-format. Additional files were needed to make the game load the added collision models. Other than that, code was added to the debug tools, which load all the created files from external storage, rather than NICO.DAT.
      The visible models for those beta areas exist, because the system managing them is a different one from the system managing the rest of the file-loading.
      There is no way to just "enable" the visible model to be used as a collision model. They have completely different formats and the game cannot use one in the place of the other.
