I’m curious to know what you think of/and a comparison of the Kate Snow Math with Confidence to the Singapore dimensions and Primary 2022. I’m torn between the three :)
I love Kate Snow's MWC, I think it's a really great program for a lot of families. My oldest is about a semester ahead of what is currently available, so it's not a good fit for us. I will likely continue Primary 2022 with my younger kiddos, as I will already have the resources and experience using it.
I was wondering the same. We are currently on Level K and have been using MWC and SM Dimensions. We do like both but I ended up opting to stick with MWC as our main curriculum mostly because I felt dimensions was just so overwhelming and wordy at times. MWC is perfectly open and go and tells you what to say for the most part. Also, Dimensions has way too many worksheets per lesson. I suppose that’s not a horrible thing if your kid needs it but it’s far too much for us and I often skip some some of it since my kid hates worksheets. MWC so far only has 1 worksheet per lesson which is perfect for us. MWC also tends to focus more on play and fun ways to practice concepts whereas I often feel dimensions focuses more on giving more worksheets to help with practicing concepts. Ive been curious about primary which is why I came to this video. I was curious if maybe primary would work out better with offering non worksheet ideas for practice.
@@crystals9768 I totally get where you are coming from. Dimensions also felt like WAY too much for us. I like how Primary 2022 is more streamlined worksheet-wise, but also offers additional stuff IF you want/need it. I love and highly respect Kate Snow and think her program is a great fit for many families. If MWC is working for you, stick with it! It wasn't an option for us (I tried to make it work) because my oldest is about 6 months - 1 year ahead of what is currently available.
@@crystals9768 I am using KMWC with my daughter, but also curious about Singapore! In comparing both since you've used both, do you feel MWC covers everything/enough and is as thorough as Singapore? Thanks!
@@amies8203 I think MWC is a solid program and aligns well with grade-level standards. It's open and go and very parent/kid-friendly. Singapore covers the same content with more practice opportunities built-in. I think a lot of it comes down to the kid you have. I think MWC is easier to teach while Singapore programs offer more depth.
I would love to hear an update on which direction you guys went and what your thoughts are! I am gearing up to start with 1A... but I cannot figure out which version to go with! Would love to hear your thoughts!! Thanks :)
@@homespun.childhood I would be interested to hear more information on how you used PM2022. Did you use the Mastery & Beyond and/or extensions? My oldest is in the same position as your son, back to 3rd grade MWC, but going to finish it half way through the school year. Also she's ready capable of more challenge.
@@lize7665 Math has been a roller coaster here. We ended up doing PM 22 for half of last year (2nd grade and K) and then switched back to MWC. My son is now going into 3rd and is doing MWC 3 + Beast.
I feel the same about primary 2022. We did primary 2022 one book and went back to dimensions. Nothing bad to say about it just for me it was overwhelming.
Thanks for this. It was very helpful. I purchased the Primary 2022 1A after completing Dimensions Kindergarten. However, I think it is too much; too wordy, too many problems, and too many illustrations. I am overstimulated and we haven't even started. I'm going to resell and purchase Dimensions 1A. I didn't have any complaints with Kindergarten, so I should have stuck with what we are familiar with.
Ah yes, the appeal of a "shiny new curriculum." I understand this well. If Dimensions works for you, go back! I will say, I think the student books are less wordy and have fewer problems than dimensions. BUT the dimensions guides are better, IMO.
We are new to Singapore math this year and are trying Primary 2022 4A (previously used Math Mammoth). At first it seemed too easy for my 4th grader, but is now becoming more challenging. I find the HIG to be a lot to look at, but sometimes feel the student book is either too redundant in instruction, or does not explain concepts thoroughly enough. Lately I am having to branch out for further instruction to try and help my son (and even myself!) understand how to solve a problem. The FB group has been helpful at times. I will stick with it for now as there is a lot that we are enjoying about the program; hopefully things come together with more experience using the curriculum. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Have you checked out the Math With Purpose membership with access to the video library? I think as you get into more advanced math topics, having some sort of support is beneficial. Which math FB group are you in? The Homeschool Singapore Math Families group has a good community.
Do you feel 2022 teaches new concepts as well as Dimensions? Visually I like the 2022 Student Book much better, and that is a major deciding factor for me. However, Dimensions has done a great job helping me know how to teach the lessons and add fun activities (were currently using Dimensions KB). In the samples of Dimensions 1A Student Book, it looks very busy and I'm not sure we would like the change to black and white pages. I would love to see a side-by-side comparison of a similar lesson between the two!
We have done Dimensions last year and may just stick with it this year. It has instructional videos which are helpful for our oldest son who has ADHD. Our middle son did tell me he likes Dimensions. He doesn't want to switch. We will listen to our child.
I used these both at my previous school when I was an associate teacher. Now we use Sadlier.... thoughts on Sadlier? I am a first year lead teacher... I am not an expert yet!
My son is currently using TGTB 2 and he hates it. It’s too easy and he is annoyed by completing problems. I know he needs to still do some work sheeting, but I was looking into Singapore math since I already conceptually teach him more advanced math concepts for his age. Their site is so overwhelming with the options. 😅. I was thinking of trying out the new 2022 version but it looks like it covers less concepts. I’m not sure if that would be good or bad. Do you think the 2022 version would move too slow? He really just finds math so boring even though he is good at it. At this point I’m willing to branch out to story based math just to get him to enjoy it.
Thanks for this video! I’ve been looking at dimensions and the new primary as well as math with confidence! It’s so hard to choose. I’ve used dimensions with my other kiddos and for some it worked some it didn’t. How did you ultimately choose which curriculum to go with?
Sorry for the late response! We have used Primary 2022, Dimensions, MWC, and Beast. I think a lot of it really depends on your child and your teaching preferences. We will be jumping back to MWC this upcoming year for 3rd and 1st. We will also pull in Beast Academy for my oldest.
Both Primary 2022 and Dimensions are based on the same Singapore math principals and are upward-spiral - the material is taught and then applied in new concepts in future units.
I think it really depends on the kid! Games work best for us - Race to Planet X was a big hit. I have some others on my Math list on amazon: amzn.to/3O0yZZv
My Kinder daughter loves The Good & The Beautiful but I’ve been thinking of switching to Singapore only because Singapore is a more rigorous program long-term. But the thought of teaching either of these is so intimidating to me!! TGATB gives you a word-for-word parent script for every part of every lesson, it’s very open and go and easy to teach. I’m so conflicted
TGTB is beautiful, but I think looking into other options is wise. Based on what you shared, I would recommend Math With Confidence. It is developmentally appropriate AND she has all the right criteria to develop a curriculum (math and elementary degrees from Harvard, teacher, homeschool mom).
@@homespun.childhood Thank you so much! This prompted me to do some research today and I also watched your review-I think we are going to land on Math With Confidence for 1st grade! Thanks again!
Thank you for this! Currently deciding between the two for our first year of homeschool, this is hugely helpful. I’m wondering if you might be able to tell me which manipulatives are absolutely needed for 1st grade. I’ve seen the list on the website but it’s quite long.. are they all really necessary to complete the unit or just recommended as helpful tools? Some more than others?
Hi! You definitely do not need a ton of manipulatives! My top recommendations for 1st grade are: Snap Cubes and double-sided counters. You can use a couple egg cartons (cut off one column) or a laminated, hand-drawn tens-chart for tens charts. You can draw/laminate a number bond chart. I ended up using a schoolnest math notebook and just having a page for each of our frequently used charts. Flip to the page, use manipulative on the chart.
That is so great! I was looking at the shop thinking “I bet I could get crafty and make 90% of this stuff”. Just added the Snap Cubes to our list. Thank you again! Your videos have been invaluable in this process for me, I am feeling so much more confident about our curriculum choices thanks to you!
Great question. He likes P2022 better. He likes that it's just one book, he loves the cute math "mascots" (which, TBH, surprised me), and he has found the extension problems (on the MC digital resource hub) to be a fun challenge.
Do you think it’s easy to teach 1st grade without the teachers manual with either of these versions? Also which one would you say is more challenging for the student?
Hi, the Singapore math programs are designed to be used with the Teacher (or Home Instructor) manual. Without the manual, you aren't getting the Singapore approach.
Good question. So we used Primary 2022 1A-2B for one kid and Primary 2022 KA-KB for another and I'm switching them both to MWC next year (3rd and 1st) with Beast Academy added in for my 3rd grader.

Singaporemath.com is the publisher of Dimensions math. They happen to be a licensed seller of Primary 2022 (published by Marshall Cavendish).
