    I have used Primary Math US Ed 1-5, and I use both Intensive Practice and Challenging Word. I use them immediately after each corresponding unit. They both take the main instruction up a notch significantly, they are not simple review. They really push students outside of the proverbial box. I really highly recommend them both. My child’s math skills are absolutely outstanding based on the use of the main curriculum and these additional resources. Simple additional practice of the main curriculum is best done using the available “Extra Practice” book as necessary.

    Thank you for the informative video! We completed Dimensions KB, and have now moved on to Dimensions 1A. I had heard that the Kindergarten program is slightly different than the rest of Dimensions, and we have definitely found that to be true. There are no longer small group and large group activities listed separately. Some of the games still require more than 1 player, but we've always just had my daughter play against me. The think section definitely has less activities geared toward a whole classroom so far. Also the textbook is slightly different and more like a traditional textbook at least in part than more of another workbook like it seemed in KB. I do like the sound of the more information/feedback on where students should be in Primary. Thanks for the game recommendation! We're definitely going to pick that up.

    Primary US edition DOES have a streaming program called Singapore Math Live. It starts in 1A and she goes through everything including Intensive Practice and Challenging Word Problems. There's videos for the children for each lesson, plus parent videos to watch weekly.
    Students follow along with the textbook.

I absolutely love it and it is working well but similar to what you said in your video I felt like the group activities just weren’t very applicable to us. Like you, I haven't done many of the expansion activities, but I do find that the depth of study is SO much deeper than the private school we pulled our kids out of this year and it's more than enough to boost not only academic confidence but understanding (in case anyone else has the eternal 'is it enough....' query)

    This video was so helpful! Thank you! We used Dimensions KA and KB for my kinder kid and Dimensions 1A and 1B for my first grader this past year. I loved the approach to math, especially the exercises that helped with mental math. Overall, I thought it was so much better than other workbooks I had viewed for their levels. However, I rarely implemented the Teacher’s Guide because it was just too much time and prep for me juggling my two students and two other kids (toddler and baby). After your video, Primary seems like a much better fit for us for at least level 1 and up. The teachers guide and student materials seems to work together more fluidly with less time and complication. Thanks!!!

    Very helpful comparison-thank you!! I liked the Dimensions PreK/K program well enough as well even though it was geared toward classroom. I was considering switching to Dimensions even though I’ve used Primary for more than 15yrs now 😅 but I think I’ll finish out with what I have. The home instructors guide gets a bit more complicated in upper levels, so the scripted instruction appealed to me. But like you, I only have one child at a given level. More guided instruction won’t be much help if it’s all about classroom activities. Thank you for the walk-through!! You saved me so much time!

    I use Dimensions with a k and 3rd grader. The intense practice books and CWP can be used along side of Dimensions as well. I just ordered Primary to look through it and see the difference. I can work with the Teachers Guide but don't love it. I do like how Dimensions seems to have extra time on a concept. From what I have researched Primary seems like it moves a bit faster which would be okay for one of my kids but not the other. Once I get the Primary set I will be able to look closer and do a complete side by side to see the difference. I hesitate a bit to change one of my kids to Primary as it only goes to 6 so we would switch back to Dimensions anyway in a few years.

      We use Math Mammoth for my 7 year old. It's very open and go and uses one little workbook. My son can open and generally start himself once we've covered the basic idea. I will say its not super exciting or colorful/cartoonish. But I do like how she introduces the topics. She has a website with tons of math games linked plus she does have videos that show the concepts and how to teach. So definitely not as appealing as the Singapore but it's inexpensive and my son is enjoying it so far. Though he loved Singapore Dimensions PreK! I will say MM doesn't have much teacher guidance, on how to teach or explain the concept clearly. No teacher guide just open and go.but her supplementary videos help with that aspect and she'll show how to incorporate manipulative. I hope that helps. You can check out ger YT channel and get a good idea of the program. She has playlists for each level.

    Thanks for this! I was always struggler with math, so when the "math people" I knew all recommended Singapore I went with it. However, I have really had a hard time with the teacher's manual and when to use the textbook vs. the workbook. I gave up and just started using the workbook only with my daughter. I know that's not really giving her the best, and my son will start school this fall, so I'd really like to get a better handle on how to utilize all the resources. A lot of what you mentioned are my thoughts too. Definitely Dimensions is geared toward classroom use which I didn't mind at the beginning, but having to constantly be adjusting everything is not what I want. Math was becoming our least enjoyed subject and not because my daughter didn't understand the content; its just the set up in Dimensions math that we didn't like. Thank you for this excellent review. I will say the small group activities are much less frequent in the higher levels of Dimensions if that helps anyone else. Also, skipping over activities and spending more time one on one playing with manipulatives to solve the problems as you study the textbook is a good alternative to a group activity you cannot do.

    Thank you!!!!! Was waiting on this. Very helpful.
    QUESTIONS:
    overall, do you think that Primary provides the same level of rigor as Dimensions now that you've seen the full year of both programs?
    Second, when you look through the IP and CWP do you find that they are challenging/different enough from the workbook and textbook to warrant buying/using them at the first grade level? (wondering if I should skip those in grade 1, but get them for grade 2 and onward.) I am also wondering if the HIG is necessary at the grade 1 level. Is there enough information to teach the concept from the Textbook itself (and save costs on the HIG)?
    Lastly, how much did the first grade Primary cost (including the supplements) compared to Dimensions?
    Also you go through the year, please show us how you schedule the assignments and a sample lesson would be helpful!
    Thanks so much for this video. ❤. I gave you a thumbs up 👍.

    • @sciencemama
      @sciencemama  3 года назад +3

      Hi! Glad the video was helpful! I would say the rigor is very similar but I can't say for sure because I haven't used both programs for the same grade level.
      I would say the IP and CWP are pretty optional at this level ... but I really haven't used them yet and probably won't until we get to IB, so that I can use IA as a review.
      As for the HIG, I really find that useful ... and I was able to find that one used! We just started a new section and it had 4 pages of teacher help before the first section. In this case, it discussed strategies for teaching subtraction as well as a rough estimate for when the kids should know their subtractions facts. That information really helps me know if we should be slowing down or if we are on track.
      Actually, they are about the same price new ... but I feel there are a lot more used options for Primary than Dimensions.
      Sure, I would be happy to cover scheduling and a sample lesson ... maybe I will do a day in the life math edition :)

    This video is so informative! My son just turned 6 and is finishing up Dimensions KB. I'm so happy to see that the Primary editions have the option of Home Instructor Guides. This will make it so much easier for me and my only child. I will most definitely be transitioning to the Primary for the 21-22 school year. I am curious to ask though, is the Primary 1A mostly a review of Dimensions KB? I found that KA and KB were a bit too easy for him and wanted to find out your opinion on whether or not the next level seemed more challenging or if I should start on 1B. Also, do you have a walk-through of the two supplemental workbooks you purchased? (Intensive Practice and Challenging Word Problems). Thanks so much!!

    • @sciencemama
      @sciencemama  3 года назад +1

      Hi! 1A definitely goes back through number bonds, addition and subtraction ... but I thought Primary did a better job of teaching those concepts. But, if you kiddo has no problem with it, maybe 1B would be better. Sure, I would be happy to do a flip through sometime :)

    We are doing TGTB K. And I'm thinking to switch the Singapore Primary Math for the fall. Do they introduce number bonds in 1A for those that may not have done the Kindergarten level with them? Or would she be lost without doing the Singapore K level?

      Hi! Glad the video was helpful! Yes, one of the first sections covers number bonds - since there isn't a Primary K program, the 1A program seems to assume your child hasn't been exposed to number bonds yet! We really like Singapore, hopefully it works well for you all!
