10:40 i remember these as a kid. Mostly I remember not understanding how they were beef burgers, because the texture was so weird. They turn out a lot better if you keep an eye on them and keep basting them in the oil that comes out so they dont dry out, then a nice bit of cheese melted on top and they were much more palatable, two burgers on a bun at least and you're close to a quarter pounder. the price difference you should compare them like that, one poxy birds eye patty on a bun vs the just essentials with some cheese, two patties, some burger sauce, some lettuce. you could probably buy all that with the price difference.
Many years ago i used to audit a company making Pate's that come in the fat sausage style packaging, called Chubs. They produced for various supermarkets, the basic mix was exactly the same, the only difference was in the seasoning, so for a very very minimal cost they could charge at least twice as much for the luxury named brand. The pate was pumped full of water in the mixing machines btw to get the weight up and if you saw what went into the salmon pate, you would never eat it again, I didn't!!
Got a lot of these essentials in my shopping basket now cos of your videos. They seem great and much cheaper plus they have a wide selection. Cheers lad
Great video. I really liked what you did . You weighed them before and after . It was a surprise how much the weight had changed and the shape of the burgers after cooking them. I'm off to asda for the just essential £3 better off . 👍
Love the painting masterpieces on the fridge by your kids. My kids are adults now and I wish I had saved some of their paintings they done. I dont know where the paintings went. As for Asda I try not to buy any of their own brand foods just yuk. All meat from all over the place like Brazil etc. I will buy their bread and fruit some times.
The Just Essential burgers are alright, there's just a very fine window between them being edible and then being completely burnt in the space of about 30 seconds, so they do require some diligence.
Cheers Gareth great review, looks good mate , I use to like the one off the fairgrounds, something about that taste especially the onions. Cheers Gareth see you soon. ❤👍❤👍❤👍❤
Did you know the ingredients on an item are listed by amount, with the largest first. The Adsa burgers second largest ingredient is water, were as the Birdseye ones don't list water in the ingredients.
Cant beat home made burgers. I like to experiment with different flavours as well. Chilli burgers with fresh chilli, chives instead of onion. A family favourite lamb minted burgers with homegrown mint
Definitely, but these will do the job on a weeknight when you've not got time to do it properly. Unless you want to go to the shops and buy some fresh beef, you'd have to thaw some mince out from the freezer and in the time that takes it's already starting to get late.
If you are on a budget, the Essentials burgers make perfect sense. Load them up with cheese, lettuce, tomato, gerkhins and sauce and they'll be spot on. My current favourites are Iceland's own brand Aberdeen Angus - pack of two half pounders or pack of four quarter pounders. They are the biz.
Usually the birds eye burgers are full of meat juice ones cooked you have to pop the burger with a fork good for gravey the meat juice that comes out of a birds eye burgers they are nice
My mum used to make her own burgers, she called them mince patties, and she put an egg in to bind the mince and onions, I wasn’t a massive fan of them, but I ate them. I didn’t make them when I got married, but there used to be a product called “Make Mince” and I tried that, the burgers were bound with that, and I loved the taste! Then the Make Mince was discontinued, so I stopped making burgers. A few years on, I started making meatballs, using a whole egg (per the recipe) and there was that not nice taste again!! That’s when I realised that it was the egg in the mince that gave that taste I didn’t like….no more meatballs ☹️ I wasn’t confident enough to try binding it with something else. A few years on again, I was watching a cookery programme can’t remember what they were cooking, but involved mince and eggs, the guy said that if you didn’t like the taste of eggs in mince dishes, it would be the egg whites, so just to use 2 yolks instead of a whole egg, it was THAT simple 😮 next time I made meatballs they were delicious!
I always make my own burgers. I've never used egg. I mince up onion very fine in the blender (about half the weight of the amount of mince). I always use mince with a higher fat content too. Without the fat & the onion it's a very dry unappetising burger. The only other thing I add is salt and pepper. I did used to have a burger mould so they came out a uniform shape and thickness but it broke so I just shape them with my hands. My late mum used to stretch the burger mix further with breadcrumbs (from stale bread, not a packet!) and grated carrot and call them rissoles!
Thanks for the tip; I'll try 2 egg yolks instead. I like the taste of my turkey meatballs but the texture could be better. Now that I think about it you can almost see the egg white though them.
I am watching this video while stirring milk waiting for it to cool down enough so I can add a culture to it. Your video is helping me pass the time, lol
Thing is Gareth, most people buy these for the kids in the family, and they ai nt , going to be to discerning about the beef difference, so on a budget, its a way to feed the family, well done mate, good comparison, and always educational, spot on
Like you I was brought up Birdseye burgers but if I have them now they don't half rift up on me, so decided the Sainsbury equivalent and they were just as tasty and cheaper on the price and not rifting up. Good review though and really enjoy watching your videos.
Can't beat a simple burger sometimes. I'd rather smash two of these into a bun than buy most of the gourmet ones available. Given a choice I'd go for the essential burger. No shame. Subscribed. 👍🏻🍔
Another great comparison review. I never miss a vlog. I love the fact that you always take the time to read and respond to comments. You are spot on xx
Gareth always is happy . Nice to watch your videos ! We got an Aldi here in Savannah, GA a few years ago Gareth. I think amongst other Aldis that ours was a lower end store. Anyways, they have a house brand (Lovin' Fresh) bread that I love. It was a twelve grain and it was great on everything. The best part was it was only $1.25 for a big loaf ! I believe it was over a pound by weight. Now, it's doubled in price and is closer to $3 ! Their cinnamon raisin bread is good too but that's nearly $4! Highway robbery
i watch a lot of shopping videos from the usa some of the prices you have to pay over there is shocking fresh veg potatoes bell peppers and bread just to name a few 5 pounds of potatoes can be got for 69p peppers for 49p lettice for 69p dry pasta as well from 29p per pack
i was going to get a box of the asda ones for emergencies and then you mentioned the onion , the last time i had burgers with "in built onion" i was burping all night and thats all i could taste was onion and cheap onion at that lol.
When I was on a budget I used to feel awkward about buying the value brand My son loved Baked Beans as kids do.Then I realised the value brand had less salt, sugar and additives.Did it for me.
I haven't bought Bird's Eye beef burgers for years. They are over priced for what they are. I usually buy Icelands burgers or Asda. Thanks for this review it has been very helpful.
Bird's-eye burgers are a strange thing. I ate them as a kid when they were pretty much the only frozen burgers around and loved em. Now if I eat one I can tell they're terrible quality but somehow I still like them lol
Love these comparison vids, one that I often think about is the difference in quality and price between a local well respected butcher’s sausages and Asda’s ‘Extra Special’ range of sausages, I don’t think there would be a great deal of difference personally even though most people have this impression that supermarket meat is crap and butchers meat is amazing, where do people think Asda get their meat from lol obviously no need to name the butcher when comparing don’t want to hurt anyones livelihood but I bet a lot of people would be shocked by the difference in both quality and price, I hope you will take my suggestion into consideration 👍🏼
Evening Gareth great vlog on burgers they don't look very appertising before cooking. Birds Eyes are so expensive compared with Asda. Birds eye really shrunk after cooking. Like you say in a bun with ketchup etc Definitely Asda! Thank you enjoyed the vlog
usually for me its the worry of the quality of beef thats in the cheaper ones... but at tthe price and the cost of living issues at the moment you cant really not buy the cheaper ones...
you say they have come down in price, but its not a fair assumption because you are not comparing the old asda ingredients to the new ones, in theory the old ones may have had more beef.
my dad wont stray from birds eye burgers with his football and homemade chips.... always remember them days... im now vegan to health reasons great review tho, love from cornwall as always mate
Yes Lidl did a similar thing. They didnt shrink too much either. I wonder if the fresh ones shrink less than the frozen ones? The lidl ones had pea protein in them i think it absorbed the fat and stopped the shrinkage. They were really tasty and juicy though!
Back in the day ‘Salt’ was a currency… it may come to pass when ‘Salt’ may become a currency again… so Birdseye have a little adage over the Just Essentials on that score… I’m not a fan of burgers, but, I’m starting to think about moving a little closer to an Asda…I may be able to afford a bigger cardboard house! Hahaha! I’ve seen some huge price increases in branded names like your Birdseye and Heinz etc… let’s bankrupt them with all of us buying the cheaper cheap stuff! 😏👍
Now that is just weird last night I was doing an asda home shop and was looking at the asda burgers but was not sure so I didn't bother now I'm going to have to amend my order. 😊👍.
Invest in some MSG (fairly cheap stuff) and you could probably make the cheaper ones taste exactly the same with a small sprinkle before or during cooking. MSG basically makes anything taste delicious, and what's more, it's lower in sodium, meaning it's not as bad for your heart as plain salt.
Birds eye £4.60? Just buy a packet of mince and an onion and season with salt and pepper and make your own. Just essentials £1.60 cheap, quick and easy.
Another great review Gaz, but I don't know how the manufacturers get away by calling them beef, they're just made up of the left overs and crap of the animal.
Hi all, I always find when switching out products like this it’s the day after I can appreciate good vs bad, I always struggle with heartburn the next day when trying certain bargain goods. The tastes are always very similar I find and with burgers by the time I’ve buttered the bap, some salad and sauce they are almost identical. Keep up the good work mate you research is very welcome and valued
I used to have a food van and I did burgers and hotdogs once from it, I ran out of burgers and the person I sent shopping came back with birds eye, my heart sank, full of fat, disgusting. Whenever I made burgers again and whenever I make them at home I just use a decent mince and form them into a patty, all you need is mince and salt. Cooked right they will outshine any crappy frozen burger.
I buy the birds eye when i can get them on offer for £3.50p . Now im going to give the essentials a try .Nothing to lose as i would still eat them even if i didnt like them ,just wouldnt buy again .Keep these reviews going Gareth much thanks x
More fat in burgers is just weight that gets lost cooking them. Hence the bigger fattier one lost more weight than the lighter lean one. Also, id definietely question the texture, the cheap ones looked like mechanically recovered meat, the birdseye looked like normal mince.
Gareth, I always buy online off Asda due to my health issues. I watch a lot of foodie people like you, and I've noticed Asda have dropped their prices by at least a Penny!!
Hi Gareth obviously in the present times there is really no comparison the asda beefburger wins all round let's face it with either tomato or brown sauce on they would taste the same .thanks again Gareth for a brilliant comparison on the beefburgers.have a great weekend
Growing up in the 70s we used to have "beefburger casserole". Birds Eye beefburgers cooked in Heinz tomato soup with tinned Carrots and tinned potatoes. Stick all the ingredients in a casserole dish in the oven for an hour. The soup potatoes and carrots all took on the flavour of the burgers. I think I'll try it again 🤔

@@bid84 the bread and butter was for the beans and home made chips, or just to clean the bean sauce off the plate at the end,
@@Imfat8888 Ah I got that just thought it was funny, bread and butter goes with everything, my bro wraps his pizza slices in bread😅
ha ha,, thats nearly as worse than dipping buttered bread in soup..
Thank you for making us aware of these differences! Keep up the good work mate 👍
Cheers pal
Cheers pal for that 👍👍
Got a lot of these essentials in my shopping basket now cos of your videos. They seem great and much cheaper plus they have a wide selection. Cheers lad
You're welcome
I've been living by myself for a while and my parents think I'm weird for buying essential range products rather than branded ones.
I've always found the birdseye repeat like mad on me to much onion in em I'd go for the asda all day long good comparison though nice one 👍
Great video. I really liked what you did . You weighed them before and after .
It was a surprise how much the weight had changed and the shape of the burgers after cooking them.
I'm off to asda for the just essential £3 better off . 👍
Thank you!
Love the painting masterpieces on the fridge by your kids. My kids are adults now and I wish I had saved some of their paintings they done. I dont know where the paintings went. As for Asda I try not to buy any of their own brand foods just yuk. All meat from all over the place like Brazil etc. I will buy their bread and fruit some times.
thanks yes they love painting, we keep them in a keep save box with other items from when they were babies.
The Just Essential burgers are alright, there's just a very fine window between them being edible and then being completely burnt in the space of about 30 seconds, so they do require some diligence.
In the current climate as you say :) I love your perspective in these videos, they are helpful to me
Glad you like them!
Buy your burgers from farm shops and local butchers, much better quality
Cheers Gareth great review, looks good mate , I use to like the one off the fairgrounds, something about that taste especially the onions. Cheers Gareth see you soon. ❤👍❤👍❤👍❤
Did you know the ingredients on an item are listed by amount, with the largest first. The Adsa burgers second largest ingredient is water, were as the Birdseye ones don't list water in the ingredients.
Ill be getting those soon mate ,i stopped buying Birds eye products years a go .Good review mate
Cant beat home made burgers.
I like to experiment with different flavours as well.
Chilli burgers with fresh chilli, chives instead of onion.
A family favourite lamb minted burgers with homegrown mint
That’s it, it’s probably cheaper to buy a packet of minced beef and make your own. Taste miles better too.
Definitely, but these will do the job on a weeknight when you've not got time to do it properly. Unless you want to go to the shops and buy some fresh beef, you'd have to thaw some mince out from the freezer and in the time that takes it's already starting to get late.
Keep up the good work Gareth I’ve been a fan for ages
thanks will do
I always buy my quarter pounders from the local butcher, you can’t beat the flavour and supporting local businesses.
First video I have come across from yourself (have subscribed now!) Great honest review nice one! I agree the price difference is just stupid.
Thank you Mike
If you are on a budget, the Essentials burgers make perfect sense. Load them up with cheese, lettuce, tomato, gerkhins and sauce and they'll be spot on. My current favourites are Iceland's own brand Aberdeen Angus - pack of two half pounders or pack of four quarter pounders. They are the biz.
thanks 😊
Usually the birds eye burgers are full of meat juice ones cooked you have to pop the burger with a fork good for gravey the meat juice that comes out of a birds eye burgers they are nice
Should try hot chocolate and Asda just essentials hot chocolate keep up the good content
good shout pal cheers
Keep up the good work. Thank you for an honest, family man comparison in these difficult times.
cheers will do
My mum used to make her own burgers, she called them mince patties, and she put an egg in to bind the mince and onions, I wasn’t a massive fan of them, but I ate them. A few years on again, I was watching a cookery programme can’t remember what they were cooking, but involved mince and eggs, the guy said that if you didn’t like the taste of eggs in mince dishes, it would be the egg whites, so just to use 2 yolks instead of a whole egg, it was THAT simple 😮 next time I made meatballs they were delicious!
cheers Jenni thank you
I always make my own burgers.
Try adding whisked egg white to cake folding it in so the cake gets moist.
Thanks for the tip; I'll try 2 egg yolks instead. I like the taste of my turkey meatballs but the texture could be better. Now that I think about it you can almost see the egg white though them.
@@cha2117 I’m wondering if you’ve commented on the wrong video.
I am watching this video while stirring milk waiting for it to cool down enough so I can add a culture to it. Your video is helping me pass the time, lol
you're welcome
@@BaldFoodieGuy Thanks. The milk is still too hot.
Another honest review. Keep them coming Gareth 😀
Cheers pal will do
Thing is Gareth, most people buy these for the kids in the family, and they ai nt , going to be to discerning about the beef difference, so on a budget, its a way to feed the family, well done mate, good comparison, and always educational, spot on
Cheers absolutely pal 👍👍
No brainer! :D Have a double burger from the essentials range, still cheaper! 🥰 Great review, thank you x
Cheers 🤣👍👍💋
Like you I was brought up Birdseye burgers but if I have them now they don't half rift up on me, so decided the Sainsbury equivalent and they were just as tasty and cheaper on the price and not rifting up. Good review though and really enjoy watching your videos.
You're welcome
Can't beat a simple burger sometimes. I'd rather smash two of these into a bun than buy most of the gourmet ones available. Given a choice I'd go for the essential burger. No shame. Subscribed. 👍🏻🍔
cheers, yes were a staple for us growing up, thanks for the sub
Another great comparison review. I never miss a vlog. I love the fact that you always take the time to read and respond to comments. You are spot on xx
I appreciate that!
The passion this guy has for frozen burgers is so endearing 😂 what a down to Earth guy.
Cheers Jeff ta mate 👍👍
i watch a lot of shopping videos from the usa some of the prices you have to pay over there is shocking fresh veg potatoes bell peppers and bread just to name a few 5 pounds of potatoes can be got for 69p peppers for 49p lettice for 69p dry pasta as well from 29p per pack
Good review. Biggest problem is finding small bread cakes for the burgers. After cooking they become bite sized a bit small.
Yes they shrink a lot. 👍
As a fellow "Asdus" guy who gets called out at every opportunity thank you for representing our oppressed minority!
i was going to get a box of the asda ones for emergencies and then you mentioned the onion , the last time i had burgers with "in built onion" i was burping all night and thats all i could taste was onion and cheap onion at that lol.
Haha yes they do that lol
When I was on a budget I used to feel awkward about buying the value brand My son loved Baked Beans as kids do.Then I realised the value brand had less salt, sugar and additives.Did it for me.
I haven't bought Bird's Eye beef burgers for years. They are over priced for what they are. I usually buy Icelands burgers or Asda. Thanks for this review it has been very helpful.
you're welcome
Bird's-eye burgers are a strange thing. I ate them as a kid when they were pretty much the only frozen burgers around and loved em. Now if I eat one I can tell they're terrible quality but somehow I still like them lol
Yes me too 😂😋😋👌
Putting in a bun with a cheese slice, gherkin and salsa and salad. I am sure your right. Fab vlog as always. 👌
Yes! Thank you!
If you love a burger do try the Iceland own lamb mint quarter burgers ,scrumptious in my opinion, but would like to see what you think 👍
Sounds good
Tesco were doing lamb mint koftas and burgers called 'Fire Pit' but that was probably a summer run, very nice though.
What an eye opener Gareth. Thanks my friend.
Cheers Keith
Love these comparison vids, one that I often think about is the difference in quality and price between a local well respected butcher’s sausages and Asda’s ‘Extra Special’ range of sausages, I don’t think there would be a great deal of difference personally even though most people have this impression that supermarket meat is crap and butchers meat is amazing, where do people think Asda get their meat from lol obviously no need to name the butcher when comparing don’t want to hurt anyones livelihood but I bet a lot of people would be shocked by the difference in both quality and price, I hope you will take my suggestion into consideration 👍🏼
thanks
Spice burgers, raw onion and beans with black pepper is a good quick snack.
yummy
Evening Gareth great vlog on burgers they don't look very appertising before cooking. Birds Eyes are so expensive compared with Asda. Birds eye really shrunk after cooking. Like you say in a bun with ketchup etc Definitely Asda! Thank you enjoyed the vlog
You're welcome 😊
The price of the Birds eye is ridiculous, but the second biggest ingredient in the Asda burgers is water ! I’ll pass on both.
usually for me its the worry of the quality of beef thats in the cheaper ones... but at tthe price and the cost of living issues at the moment you cant really not buy the cheaper ones...
you say they have come down in price, but its not a fair assumption because you are not comparing the old asda ingredients to the new ones, in theory the old ones may have had more beef.
my dad wont stray from birds eye burgers with his football and homemade chips.... always remember them days... im now vegan to health reasons great review tho, love from cornwall as always mate
£4.60!?! Jesus, I remember around the summer Tesco did 12 fresh burgers about 1.1kg for about that price...and they were actually really tasty.
Yes Lidl did a similar thing. They didnt shrink too much either. I wonder if the fresh ones shrink less than the frozen ones? The lidl ones had pea protein in them i think it absorbed the fat and stopped the shrinkage. They were really tasty and juicy though!
Branded foods pass on costs for advertising to customers. Another good vlog Gareth.
Thanks 👍
Back in the day ‘Salt’ was a currency… it may come to pass when ‘Salt’ may become a currency again… so Birdseye have a little adage over the Just Essentials on that score… I’m not a fan of burgers, but, I’m starting to think about moving a little closer to an Asda…I may be able to afford a bigger cardboard house! Hahaha!
I’ve seen some huge price increases in branded names like your Birdseye and Heinz etc… let’s bankrupt them with all of us buying the cheaper cheap stuff! 😏👍
Thanks
Now that is just weird last night I was doing an asda home shop and was looking at the asda burgers but was not sure so I didn't bother now I'm going to have to amend my order. 😊👍.
Hope you enjoy
I’d no idea you could get 10 burgers for so much less. Still prefer the Bird’s Eye but I’ll bear it in mind for winter when I’m really broke.
Exactly, processed burgers I wouldn’t even regard as food. I do weightlifting and would class them on my macros as junk food.
Another great review Gaz, but I don't know how the manufacturers get away by calling them beef, they're just made up of the left overs and crap of the animal.
Yes should be full of beef shouldn't they 👍👍
I suppose because 'beef' sounds better than contains lips, eyelids and foreskin flesh😂🐄👍

Hello Gareth I'm going to go to asda. Try the beef and a couple of other items. Have a good weekend x good job. God bless x I love a 🍔 burger
cheers Mary xx
On a bbq with tomato sauce after a few scoops I’d have to go Asda🍔
Done in Gravy, the Asda ones are lovely.... 😀
Yummy Chris 😋👍
You read my mind, I was about to say weight them after cooking, I think the difference in taste would be mostly the extra salt.
Good analysis 👍
Cheers
Hi all, I always find when switching out products like this it’s the day after I can appreciate good vs bad, I always struggle with heartburn the next day when trying certain bargain goods. The tastes are always very similar I find and with burgers by the time I’ve buttered the bap, some salad and sauce they are almost identical. Keep up the good work mate you research is very welcome and valued
Cheers David
The Birdseye has more salt, as salt brings out flavour.
You can add more salt, and save 3 quid. Kx
Exactly
Great vid as always, however I cannot remember a time when a burger was an essential lol!
100%. I do the same.
I buy the birds eye when i can get them on offer for £3.50p . Now im going to give the essentials a try .Nothing to lose as i would still eat them even if i didnt like them ,just wouldnt buy again .Keep these reviews going Gareth much thanks x
You're welcome Susan x
More fat in burgers is just weight that gets lost cooking them. Hence the bigger fattier one lost more weight than the lighter lean one. Also, id definietely question the texture, the cheap ones looked like mechanically recovered meat, the birdseye looked like normal mince.
When you skint you don't look that deep
@@BaldFoodieGuy i do, and had periods of years with virtually no cash for anything. Its why im 4 stone under weight.
Love your videos! They entertain me so much! Keep 'em coming!

Gareth, I always buy online off Asda due to my health issues. I watch a lot of foodie people like you, and I've noticed Asda have dropped their prices by at least a Penny!!
Cheers yes David, I was shocked about the price drop.
@@BaldFoodieGuy It makes a change Gareth!!
Hi Gareth obviously in the present times there is really no comparison the asda beefburger wins all round let's face it with either tomato or brown sauce on they would taste the same .thanks again Gareth for a brilliant comparison on the beefburgers.have a great weekend
Cheers Wesley 👍👍
With £4 you can get 2 or maybe 3 boxes of the cheap ones
The woman who works in Ulverston chippy enjoyed your review & was chuffed . I told her about your review.
Oh good stuff good chippy that is Steven, cheers pal, all the best, Gareth 👍👍
Growing up in the 70s we used to have "beefburger casserole". Birds Eye beefburgers cooked in Heinz tomato soup with tinned Carrots and tinned potatoes. Stick all the ingredients in a casserole dish in the oven for an hour. The soup potatoes and carrots all took on the flavour of the burgers. I think I'll try it again 🤔
Sounds so nice that does !
Nice review Gareth
