Are You Sitting Comfortably ~ Moody Blues

  • From the album On The Threshold Of A Dream, 1969
    Are You Sitting Comfortably
By Ray Thomas and Justin Hayward
A wonderful classic of the Moody Blues, considered one of the bands all time favorites and still performed live today. I remember seeing for the first time live in 1970 and knowing then that this band has an insight and connection to spirit. For those that know the album, this song has an abrupt ending...hence I have it followed by the second part of, "Have you Heard" by Mike Pinder.
Take another sip my love and see what you will see,
A fleet of golden galleons, on a crystal sea.
    Are you sitting comfortably?
    Let Merlin cast his spell.
Ride along the winds of time and see where we have been,
The glorious age of Camelot, when Guinevere was Queen.
It all unfolds before your eyes
    As Merlin casts his spell.
The Seven Wonders of the World he'll lay before your feet,
In far-off lands, on distant shores, so many friends to meet.
    Are you sitting comfortably?
    Let Merlin cast his spell.
    Have You Heard (part 2)
    By Mike Pinder
Now you know how nice it feels,
Scatter good seed in the fields.
    Life's ours for the making,
    Eternity's waiting, waiting,
    For you and me.
Now you know that you are real,
Show your friends that you and me
    Belong to the same world,
Turned on to the same word,
    Have you heard?
    Have you heard?
    Have you heard?
    Have you heard?
    Have you heard?

Back in the early 1970s I would put the Moody Blues on my turntable, plug in my headphones, lay down on my bed and close my eyes and just drift off to another world. The Moody Blues are my favorite group of all time and have been fortunate to see them in concert several times. There will never be another pioneering group as great as the Moody Blues. Don't tell anyone but I am 54 years old and still a member of the Moody Blues fan club.

Don't be so sure of that! I too went to Woodstock, wrote poetry (that I shall publish this year), married a great Lady who gave birth to a new generation of children who think, love, and are creative in turn. The wheel has not stopped turning, and beautiful people (Melanie's great ballad) still come forth from God. Be of good cheer. Yes, we know the Phillistines prance around their phony stage and make noise ... but they DON'T extinguish the flame of Life and will be history soon.

Moody Blues have to be in the top five of all rock groups. Their unique sound and
dreamy lyrics always took us on surreal, incredible trips of love, peace, harmony, acceptance, tolerance and togetherness, and Brotherhood. What a great era, in which they played a huge part... WE were lucky to grow in the times where love, peace and free love and protest and hope was espoused, and not violence nor gun ownership... OH how lucky WE were.

This song has become the hymn for my depression, in a nice way. It's a signal of hope, it's my light at the end of the tunnel. It's what reminds me that tomorrow will be another day, and it will be better than yesterday.
If it wasn't for this song and the wonderful memories it brings to my mind, remembering seeing my dad happy for the first time after his divorce with my ma, I would've committed suicide in June '20.

Those pieces which are not "their most favored work" are among the best, and because they got little air play except on FM back in the late 60s/early 70s, it becomes a well-kept secret that those of us who revere the Moody Blues have had all to ourselves. Countless wonderful compositions that never made it to radio because of what those songs were and how they were composed. As the fathers of prog rock it took the public a few extra years to appreciate the Moody Blues, and once they were caught up they had 7 albums in the can and it was a treasure trove of progressive rock people finally appreciated. Only means the Moodies were literally years ahead of their time.

If I could write to my "70s" self I would say, "Find a Moodies concert and go to it!" Glad I finally made it to one in 2011!
Who knew back then that we would someday be able to share these music videos among the Moodies fan community. That's one of the nice things about modern times. :)

I went out of state to college in 1970 freshman year. I did not know myself but I knew The Moody Blues recordings. I never lost the love of the power they created. My God has patience and love for me and brings me home each time I reach for him through their creations.

The more new music I listen to today, the more I listen to the Moody Blues and bands from that era when I was in highschool. I just don't see the creativity of musicians today. I don't know, maybe it's just me.

Wow. I just connected some things. I'd heard this many times by 1973. In December that year, I was meditating and had a 3D vision of Jupiter close on, hanging low in the sky, but above the horizon. Jupiter had rings, which surprised me. Near Jupiter I saw two things, both shining gold, and in the vision they were planets or moons. One was a fat dragon. One was a golden galleon. I never connected to this song until just now, 46 years later.
Jupiter's rings were not discovered until 1979. I wasn't surprised to see them.

More than apparent that the Moody Blues had seen the inside of a Music Conservatory as surely as a Tzaddik Rabbi saw the study halls of a Yeshiva and Kollel...Brilliant young men were this band back in the 1960s...Now they reside in the Palace of Immortality..."a Golden Age of Camelot when Guinevere was Queen..."

Throughout the many psychedelic journeys I took in my youth, I was always safely guided through them by the Moody Blues. "In Search Of The Lost Chord" accompanied and shaped my first acid experience; it was a beautiful introduction to inner space. Although I have left the chemicals far behind me, the spiritual focus of the Moody Blues has become a part of who I am, and how I see the world, and for that, I shall always be grateful to them. This song is a beautiful tribute to those distant times.

An amazing group who made magical music and made music magical. ‘Threshold of a Dream’ was, and still is my all time favorite album from them, but ‘Question of Balance’ is such a close second that I could almost say they’re tied. Whether ‘To Our Children’s Children’s Children’, or ‘In Search of The Lost Chord’ is my third favorite, I can’t say; but the two of them together are most certainly third and fourth! At the age of 72, I still love listening to their music and don’t get tired of hearing it the way I do with other groups. Other groups may have a song or two that I can listen to over and over, but not entire albums as do the Moody Blues. When I finally cross that threshold over which there’s only one crossing, if there are any in attendance at the funeral, I hope they get to listen nonstop to the music made by this group; and not just ‘the greatest hits’, but starting with ‘Tuesday Afternoon’. Let that be the time and day of the funeral, too, ‘cause I’ll finally be finding out why “..the trees are drawing me near.” It’ll be my final ‘confirmation’. Blessings to you everyone ~ ❤️‍🔥🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️‍🔥

You are so right Renard. My son got me hooked on a lot of alternative bands that are out now. However, I did the same with him, with all the bands i grew up with, including these wonderful musicians.I'm 62 now and it's great to know than my son loves a lot of the music I liked. I wish more of the younger generation would listen....actually listen...to this wonderful music. Maybe we wouldn't have a lot of the crap that's out now.
