Redundancy would be welcome in my opinion. Having a whole bunch of ships that basically do the same thing, and getting to choose which one you visually like best, would be nice. Obviously they'd never make them handle identically, but yeah similar, redundant, salgood.
yeah + where are the non-imperial gutamaya ships? Core Dynamics makes ships for civilians and Imperial and Federal navies so why is Gutamaya Imperial-exclusive?
What if ships too big to fit through a mailslot will be made to use dry docks? They can hold entire frigates, and having a dry dock adds sort of the XL landing size although they may not be found on planetary surfaces
Pretty Fly Guy I think docking a ship too large for the airlock was explained as an orchestrated parasitic lock on to one of the rotating limbs or store pods, that are attached to the mast, on the aft section of some starports. Apparently they stop rotating independently from the rest of the starport, through some type of clutch, just long enough to complete the docking. The clutch is then disengaged, starts rotating again, getting in sync with the starport, with the large vessel attached.
Massive ships that would fit through the slot will have shuttles on board so you can send the goods to the station, reason why shuttles are going to be introduced. Hopefully having these massive ships you would eventually need escorts for protection if you attend trading or traveling from station, bigger the ship bigger the risk that's when you need your friends to help out then dived the dividends :)
DeSpace Man It would also be great if they had a module for a barge hanger or something inside to haul cargo to the surface and ammunition and fuel back up.
What I'd really love is a used ship dealer, where you can buy some of the classic or obsolete old ships (Cobra mk1 etc...) and add them to your collection. They could all come with quirks like rare paint jobs, weird engineered modules and breakdowns etc... They wouldn't necessarily be that useful, but would be great for collectors and just fun.
I love the way Frontier updated their ships from these super low poly origins. It gives them a very distinctive, geometric appearance I've never seen anywhere else. The only thing I wish they'd abandoned was the Coriolis design. It's so impractical, having so many sides that don't line up with the station's spin.
I think there's plenty of space for new or reimagined ships in the game even if they fullfil a similar role to existing ships - it just adds to the variety of ships you'd see in game.
I hope Frontier makes something similar to what Egosoft did in X3. In this game the normal ships (Fighters and small transports) land INSIDE the station like in Elite while larger ships (Corvettes) dock at the outside of the station and very large ships (Frigates, Destroyers, Carriers,) can only dock at ship yards. Large ships have hangar bays for fighters (real ones, not remote controlled) or even small transports the player can switch to. This can also be used to transport goods between the large ships and a smaller station the large ship can't dock with. Something like this would be really cool to have in Elite. In X3 I loved flying the Split Panther Frigate carrying a selection of my favorite large M3+ class fighters.
The Beluga is the Panamax Passenger ship, with the Panther being the Panamax Freighter. Probably between 1000 to 1500 tons cargo depending on fittings.
More looking forward to more SRV's. One with more cargospace, a more tank-like srv, or an srv thats faster and more stable but cant deal with rough terrain?
SO MUCH THIS!^ i always thought we should have multiple surface vehicles... the current scarrab is a multi purpose vehicle. then one for combat, which ditches the cargo space. (tank-like) one which has no shields nor cargo, but is incredibly fast (for racing) one which has no gun, but more cargo space. (hauler) one without a gun, maybe weaker or no shields, but actuall scientific scanners... (i hate that stupid wave scanner!) for actuall exploration
What I want to fly one day is a Cruiser or Destroyer class ship. A ship that's far larger than the Cutter/Fonda/Corvette but still smaller than the Capital ships (so a ship that's around 350-400 meters long). Of course a downside to this kind of ship is maybe it can only dock at capital ship docks due to it's size.
Or implement a different station where the docking mechanism attaches to your ship. Kind of like at an airport when your board a plane. It'd make big ships possible but I foresee problems with ship designs since most have that bottom bay and no side doors. Or since the ship is so large have a small shuttle to ferry yourself to and from stations. Ideas, ideas. BRING IN THE CRUISERS
Ryan Olivier put in order: Largest class: dreadnaught/battleship Second largest: carrier Third: cruiser/heavy cruiser (only difference is usually the size of the armament) Fourth: destroyer escorte/frigate Fifth: corvette
Always felt that the Lion Transport had a very Zorgon Peterson feel to it with those wings, like with the Adder those tips could fold down when landing etc, could have a more turret friendly setup for it's hard points, something like four mediums around it's midships and it's iconic top turret being a large hard point.
Every time I think I might be getting burnt out on Elite, I end up watching one of your videos and jumping right back in. Thanks for all your hard work CMDR ObsdianAnt.
I'm always confused as to why anyone feels the need to dislike any of these videos? if any of you read this please reply and let me know, I won't ridicule you no matter the reason, it's just really got me wondering. I'm also wondering if people are meaning to like the video and accidentally hitting dislike and not realizing it.
Noah Powell Very occasionally I'll dislike a video purely due to its content and my lack of interest. For example, any fail compilations get an instant dislike so they don't appear in my recommended. Maybe people do the same with Ants' videos? If I didn't play ED I wouldn't want videos in my recommended!
I'm personally not very intrigued by videos that just give a lot of speculation. This was more of a history lesson instead of any news on "Future Ships". I found the title to be misleading, so I down voted. Kudos for you to offer an ear to opinions you didnt understand
I wanna see Capital Ships! .. i mean flyable by players and customizable. You can use it for mining and from resources you can build your own ships inside the Capital Ship. that's what they need. so it's your flying home / hangar that keeps everything you need.
Capital ships will be difficult to pull off. This is seen with the Farragut class cruisers and the Majestic class Interdictor. They are HUGE and I can't see how it could be done without a perfected multicrew function.
It would make sense for Panther Clipper only to be able to dock on planet surfaces. It would actually give you the sense of scale of the ship - not being able to fit into docking slot. It would also have to be able to transport a LOT of cargo, to make it worth using for trading.
One thing I feel needs pointing out is that we do have something that is similar to the old iCourier: the Imperial Clipper is basically an updated version of the old Courier, with both ships having a similar shape, two nacelles and being pretty big. I always felt that if Frontier named the Clipper the Courier instead it would've avoided some confusion.
I'd love to see the Panther Clipper with a form of external docking at stations where you take a shuttle to the station, and the station uses limpets to send commodity purchases to your ship. Time to transfer cargo would actually take a little bit of time as a draw back to the massive volume being handled. Of course, stations would have immense limpet controllers, so sending out 10-15 limpets per second shouldn't be too unreasonable. Planetary docking would be even more time consuming, and the player would have to pay a transport levy for taking purchased goods off planet (and of course a wing of other cargo ships just coming and transferring goods to a player. The transfer itself would be a vulnerable moment, giving pirates a great opportunity to attack in a wing.
I really hope this is right and they do bring in ships larger than the anaconda, but i dont think there will be a problem docking them IF they bring in shuttlecraft as well. Which makes sense seeing as they hinted about shuttles but, like ObsidianAnt said, they don't seem to fit much of a role other than a go-between for a ship that can't dock on a certain landing pad. Like an anaconda on a small/medium pad outpost, or say a ship larger than an anaconda that can't land on any dock size. Your ship could maybe just orbit nearby, or autodock at some nearby dry dock or something. I think that's pretty plausible.
I think more utility ships is the way to go with specific non combat roles. Moray starboat was a medical ship. How about, repair ships, dedicated personnel shuttles, refuelers, breakers, recovery and drones?
The Imperial Courier's cockpit might be very large compared to existing aircraft and that may cause a skewed sense of scale when viewing the ship exterior, that cockpit results in the most beautiful interior in the game.
Yes, the dimensions... Now, 3 years later, there is talk about ships getting interiors to walk around in, but I just can't see how this could work, without a complete re-design of the ships and their dimensions. It isn't just the canopies, but the size of the pilot's seats and pilots too. They make the ships look and defacto be way smaller than they ought to be and create huge conflicts between the stats of the ships and their dimensions. For example, I have a Python set up for passenger transport. It has economy, business and first class cabins (! - CABINS, not seats!) for around 90 passengers, in a ship that according to the size of the cockpit and the pilot inside that cockpit, would barely have enough room for a single 2-bunk cabin with bathroom for the pilot and co-pilot. Or look at how big a SRV is compared to some of the smaller ships that can carry them, like a Hauler or a Diamondback. The SRV is almost 1/3 as big as the ship and yet the whole SRV hangar only takes up a size 2 internal compartment in a ship that has several of those and even bigger compartments. There is either some Tardis/Bag of Holding magic technology there, where things can be bigger on the inside than on the outside, or it makes absolutely no sense. Apparently the game's creator said in 2012 that the ships would surely get walkable interiors one day, but if he really intended that, then why did he at no time put any effort into designing and specking the ships and space stations in a way that would even make that possible? Basically at any point of the game's development, he could have and he would have needed to say: "No, we can't do it that way, because that will cause us problems when we later implement ship interiors.", but he never did.
Panther clippers were awesome for assassinations. Heavy shields and a plasma accelerator took any ship out with one hit, even the massive cargo ships or lynxes. And you should have mentioned the wolf mk 2, I found those to be the toughest ships in Elite next to the thargoid mother ships. Also, I believe you meant the commodore Amiga, not the 64.
i know this video is a bit older, however i would like to see a couple things after watching it. 1) being the "ferry" ship for when your ship is too big too dock. So you can just be outside the station and pilot you little ship in and hand in your mission and get a couple more. Now i know much is wrong with this. No way to do cargo unless you make a thousand trips. Also Fdevs could just make external landing pads for bigger ships :) and 2) i would like to see a couple smaller ships to fill the gap between the sidewinder and the hauler, eagle, adder ships. It just seems like a very small jump that you can make so fast. Once you've built an eagle for combat you've got millions, built a hauler for exploration, you've got millions. I'm the type to cherish those beginnings but i know not everyone does.
Ships needed in future. Boa: For large freighter hauls. Griffin: Nice looking large ship for ship design diversity Mantis: Another large ship, Firefly lookalike, excellent for multi crew missions. Imperial Explorer: Very nicely designed Star Trek looking vessel Other notable and nimble ships Wolf Mk2: Available in the Amiga versions of the game Mamba: Iconic legacy ship, sorely missed Gyr: uniquely designed combat craft. Bottom line, I hope in the fullness of time and after avatars are able to leave their seats and see the interiors, we can get more of a focus on new ships. Even if via DLC new expansions.
It would be great to see more utility ships. I remember in the novel that came with the original elite 'the dark wheel' there is mention of a brightly lit medical boat, I think it was called the moray or the mamba.
I used to still play FEII in a DOSBox, until ED came out. I'd mostly trade, get a Panther Clipper, then trade with that until I had so much money that the screen wasn't wide enough to display all the digits and they'd overwrite eachother. Then start again from scratch :) Put enough Shield Generators on a Panther and you can just collide with anything that causes you trouble.
I would really like to see alternate methods of docking for large ships, such as docking to arms on the outside of stations. We already have a few Coriolis Starports that have docking booms on them that currently serve no purpose, not to mention that there must be docking rings on Ocellus and Orbis stations that can rotate freely like someone else suggested with a clutch to allow docking. I can't imagine what chasing a docking collar would be like if you had to try and match a station's rotation AND dock at the same time. Naturally, these huge ships would probably have a max number of docking slots depending on the station type. Coriolis could maybe have 4 due to have only 4 surfaces and Ocellus and Orbis could have 6-10 depending on the variant. This will also make station types actually have meaning outside of actual starports and outposts being the only real differences.
I think it'd be great if they added a system kinda like EVE, how player factions can buy a station and such, only instead of a station, it can be a very large ship, which isn't really played controlled as such, but more so commanded so it had the ability to fight stuff in it's near space, and the ability to be told to jump to a certain system, with players on board? Maybe using the ship as a sort of portable outpost where you can refuel and such, but not really outfit your ships or trade or anything. I think that'd be brilliant, and it'd bring alot more life into the online mode because you could have situations where two large factions wish to occupy the same system or something, or a faction wants to put an end to a community goal by delivering tens of thousands of tons of cargo. Obviously these ships would be expensive as all hell, or maybe even require to be built in some way, but I think it'd really make the game a ton cooler, just to be exiting a station and all of a sudden you see that amazing warp effect for capital ships like the Farragut, and in comes these behemoth of a ship
The game has Federation ships & Imperial ships. I think its sadly lacking some Alliance specific ships. I think the designers could really let their imaginations go wild with Alliance ships since they dont have to look like anything that either the Federation or Empire have. It would also be good if they brought some ships from the original 1984 game back like the Krait which has been mentioned on the official forums quite a few times.
On the subject of small fighters, I'd like more variety in them and use perhaps slightly bigger fighter type craft, that would serve as a sort of speedboat on a yacht. So I would leave the bigger ship in orbit of a planet and fly around in the smaller one.
I really live the direction elite is going in, i hope that frontier begins to add larger ships into the game, large enough where they themselves cannot dock at stations, but rather a shuttle bay with shuttles would he required to dock
I feel like the XL cargo ships will still need to dock somehow, due to the fact you still have to be to refuel and load them with cargo and you can't do that with just a shuttle. A personnel shuttle would be a good idea so you can theoretically "park" close to a station and go inside via shuttle. This would only really matter when stations become walkable eventually.
Or when you established contact with the station, or landed on the station with a shuttle, you could order refueling repair services and watch the station dispatch fuel tankers and repair drone/crews. It would be kind of cool if you didnt actaully have to dock at a specific dock, but instead requested fuel and repair service and had to wait around for a bit depending on how much damage and how much fuel. Would be part of having a larger ship, more advanced maintainence and fueling issues
FD should make a joint venture with EdgeCase Ltd (Fractured Space, the game) and get instant capital ships with sleek design. I'd love to fly these ships in the Elite galaxy... (dream on)
Would like to see Elite Dangerous go in the other direction then constantly making big ships and see very tiny ships that are next to impossible creating a paper scissors rocks balance to elite dangerous that works in these types of games.
The thing is you are supposed to be able to move around cockpits in elite while jet fighters have no need for this you just open cockpit and get out/in so they are as small as possible.
I thought the new Imperial Courier was a disapointment given how iconic the original was in Frontier Elite II. Would love to see the Panther Clipper and Lion Transport addrd to Elite Dangerous. Think things like Kraits and Ospreys will be ship launched fighters
I wanna see some battleships. A destroyer of some kind maybe? Fast and packs a punch, but large, not very agile, and relatively weak armor or shielding. Imagine a version of the Anaconda with more hard points, but faster and slightly weaker.
They need to fix the scale of the ships so they make sense. From what I can tell, right now my character could barely fit his arm through the door I am supposed to board my ship with. ***Some other things they need in the game*** They need to at least double the number of ships, their simply aren't enough to give you a sense of identity in the game. They need to establish the ships that are already in the game as the smallest class. They need to release very large ships, ships that are half the size of a space station. That a player would have to navigate around just to move through populated areas. Epic ships that are used to carry massive amounts of raw resources, cargo and some cruise liners for tourism centers and carrier ships. Ships that need boarding bridges extended and shuttles buzzing around to service them. Maybe ships that are so large that they have to refuel by and extended arm or by picking up fuel modules that are assembled outside of a station. This would give space stations a better sense of utility and would make them feel alive. Some space stations should have a hive vibe, with slumbering giants and zipping fighters and so many ships in between. We need fire fighting ships and law enforcement, with the flashing lights to signal authority. They should send military style enforcers after someone who is speeding they should send some sort of port authority out to tick them. Maybe scrapper ships that clean up space ports. Ships large enough to land multiple ships on in various fashions (closed hanger, landing pads, docking ports) They need to add a lot of new ground vehicles. Tanks, anti air, cargo trucks, trains and personal vehicles. These things take dev time but they could be implemented because the platform can support so much more than we are getting.
i love the boeing like snout from the imperial courier concept. it would have been a better design than the final one since the courier we have now is not looking like its size. the cockpit makes the ship look incredibly small. but cou could actually fit a cinema bank in there or... like its something like 7 diameters across. it just doesnt fit its size visually.
I'd sort of like to see a few ships come back in the form of ship launched fighters. A new Krait model could perhaps be a heavier fighter, bigger, more expensive, and more powerful, but slower. I'd like something better for my multicrew peeps to fly!
Having a "Canopy" in space is utterly ridiculous! You would not have a thin pane of glass between you and vacuum! You would have a bulkhead with a view screen that captured image through camera and sensors, then if you loose your sensors you loose visibility
With the size and possible scope of the game I wonder if in game clans or fighter wing groups (CLANS) will become available and how big will player ships start becoming in the future will we see players being able to purchase or build capitol ships or destroyer's for use as a clan base or mobile base.
I was quite disappointed about the Imperial Courier concept art vs what we got. It would be nice if the ships would branch out a bit more in design though.
The datacards you show are from the Archimedes version of the original Elite. I just thought that could be mentioned, since you stress Frontier rather than Elite. Us Acorn users never had Frontier ...
Did you ever managed to get a Turner Class ship? those were weird looking ships, which had a tail that moved side-to-side. I used to like the Griffin. I feel if we do get the Panther Clipper some-how its not going to turn-out the way we want it.
@ObsidianAnt they could make bigger player ships. Dont you remember they do have those new capital ship docking bays ;). Possibly pointing at bigger ships coming ?
I am waiting for the next ship update, I ditched the game just before 2.2, there is nothing for me more to do other than wait somewhere to spend my 500mil.
Yup i have one standing at 342mil. mostly for trading and have other ships too, plus that extra 500mil. that I can't spend anywhere :/, I just need something bigger, meaner and new.
I was gonna go for Cutter but the farming was bit too much for getting a ship that was slightly better than my Conda (and not always) and I kinda lost interest after that, same for the corvette it's mostly combat, I d'love to see some more bigger and different multipurpose ships as it stands I ve tried most of them, have fer, have a asp for exp, have vaulture for bounty, but I feel the game needs something bigger crazier and more "endgamey"
word man. I just got my conda and have a vulture and asp and hit 300+mill ish and as much as I love the game, I feel kinda burned out. There's just not enough variety in the game. Passenger missions etc. are a good step in the right direction I think but still not enough to get me excited. Where are the fucking aliens?
Should've showed concept for Fer-de-Lance. It's just so much better than what we've got. Don't get me wrong - FDL in game is a nice looking ship. But concept was so much more refined IMO. Much more masculine and powerful looking, but still had elegant and sleek lines. Also, for some reason I always pronounced "ai" in Krait as 'i" in bite. But you said as 'crate'. So is that the correct way?
I really don't understand why the can't translate the scale of the cockpit into a live asset. Makes no sense at all why the clipper has that MASSIVE canopy on it.
I can remember walking away from Elite Dangerous when they released the Imperial Courier. What a travesty. :( Took a long time for me to come back. Maybe one day we'll get an Imperial Trader with those 'unnecessary' retracting nacelles.
What I miss after reading sci-fi novels like "the expanse" and "Revelation space" I miss the most rational type, a kind of rocket that generates thrust gravity and is designed as a multi story house along the axis of thrust. Or maybe something with a drum or two counter rotating arms to generate gravity on the float.
Maybe we'd have more ships in the game, and more progress in general, if FD weren't so preoccupied with nerfing everything in sight and continually fiddling at the peripheries.
Feature idea: External docking clamps on stations specifically for extremely large ships like the Panther Clipper.
Also if our landing gear can literally lock into the ground on planets, they should be able to lock on asteroids
Redundancy would be welcome in my opinion. Having a whole bunch of ships that basically do the same thing, and getting to choose which one you visually like best, would be nice. Obviously they'd never make them handle identically, but yeah similar, redundant, salgood.
FDEV PLS
yeah + where are the non-imperial gutamaya ships? Core Dynamics makes ships for civilians and Imperial and Federal navies so why is Gutamaya Imperial-exclusive?
I agree more hauls type with similar abilities.
Could be neat to use something like the cargo-scoop camera to attach to airlock ports.
DeSpace Man shuttles and tenderships would be awesone!
DeSpace Man It would also be great if they had a module for a barge hanger or something inside to haul cargo to the surface and ammunition and fuel back up.
I'd like to see an Imperial Lawnmower.
It fits the names of the rest of their ships.
HAHAHA! I can't believe I never noticed that... you have made my day! :D
TyOrca 5 AHAHHAA
TyOrca 5 ha I see that one, what about the imperial weeder
imperial trimmer
TyOrca 5 imperial housecleaning lady
I wish they added more ships that don't look like pizza slices :/
Sidewinder, Cobra3/4 look like a pizza slice too. the t6/7/9 look like a brick and the asp scout/explorer look like a mix of both
Star citizen has badass ships
***** Pizza, Triangle, Taco, whatever. Something else then a simple geometrical shape. You know what I mean.
Star Citizen does have badass looking ships, the Vanguard Warden looks sick!
talking my words mate. xD
SO MUCH THIS!^
i always thought we should have multiple surface vehicles...
the current scarrab is a multi purpose vehicle.
then one for combat, which ditches the cargo space. (tank-like)
one which has no shields nor cargo, but is incredibly fast (for racing)
one which has no gun, but more cargo space. (hauler)
one without a gun, maybe weaker or no shields, but actuall scientific scanners... (i hate that stupid wave scanner!) for actuall exploration
Same here, dude... Same here....................................
Ryan Olivier put in order:
Largest class: dreadnaught/battleship
Second largest: carrier
Third: cruiser/heavy cruiser (only difference is usually the size of the armament)
Fourth: destroyer escorte/frigate
Fifth: corvette
And in-between corvette and light Frigate, is the type 9 transport. lol
^^^^^^^^
and lower than light frigate, is probably fighters or droid fighters
Always felt that the Lion Transport had a very Zorgon Peterson feel to it with those wings, like with the Adder those tips could fold down when landing etc, could have a more turret friendly setup for it's hard points, something like four mediums around it's midships and it's iconic top turret being a large hard point.
7:15 "Interplanetary Shuttle..." Anybody else think "Galileo 7" should've been painted on the side of that ship? :D
logandarklighter Only those that study the universe will understand that joke.
Definitely a nod to Star Trek.
commander of a Python is named Monty! HAH MONTY PYTHON LOL
NiTEWoLF259 it is merely a flesh wound
Sir MurksAlot Look I'll have ya leg!
NiTEWoLF259 NOBODY EXPECTS THE FEDERAL INQUISITION!
NiTEWoLF259 n
Need to roll outta the bong throttle there sport. It's funny but not that funny. ;)
wow this brings back memories. I played Elite on the Atari ST back in the day. A planet was just a green circle lol. Left lots to the imagination.
These videos are a labour of love, thanks really soothing and informative.
Thank you! :)
So far, only the Krait made it back into the game from this list.
The Krait is finally back!
Why don't they just make the opening on stations bigger?
Or make terminal docks to the sides of stations where ships can dock in an airport or space shuttle-dock like fashion.
"Why don't they make everything easy? Why even be a game?"
oh man, this is so rad. You should do all of Frontier's promo videos
The courior in the lore pre release looked like the clipper. So the concept art is really for the clipper, looks pretty similar in my opinion.
The courier concept is basically an imperial cutter with 2 MASSIVE guns
Every time I think I might be getting burnt out on Elite, I end up watching one of your videos and jumping right back in. Thanks for all your hard work CMDR ObsdianAnt.
As always, it's the potential on such a sheer scale that Elite promises that brings me back again and again, and this video encapsulates that.
Commodore 64! That bought back memories. I didn't discover Elite until 1986 and only got to Dangerous!
So, Imperial Courier concept arts turned out to actually be Imperial Cutter :D
Jake Constable so you hurt a channel instead of hitting the dots next to the video and clicking not interested?
Noah Powell It doesn't hurt the channel at all, it's more traffic
The Imperial Trader was my ship in frontier on my amiga. I spent a serious amount of hours flying that.
The perfect time for a trip down memory lane! Thanks a lot ObsidianAnt!
I have just seen a hirable crew pilot stating "I did my time flying a Panther Clipper LX" anyone ever seen this before?
The old imperial courrier is more like the actual imperial cutter
Or the much larger Imperial Explorer which isn't in the game yet.
Maybe there would be a way to dock on the exterior of the station if it's too large to fit in the mail slot?
Or maybe it could use one of the new capital-ship docks/stations?
Some of us got some girth
Been looking forward to a video like this. Really excited to see big ships roaming around.
Griffin: Nice looking large ship for ship design diversity
Mantis: Another large ship, Firefly lookalike, excellent for multi crew missions.
Imperial Explorer: Very nicely designed Star Trek looking vessel
Other notable and nimble ships
Wolf Mk2: Available in the Amiga versions of the game
Mamba: Iconic legacy ship, sorely missed
Gyr: uniquely designed combat craft.
I hope the new Krait is a medium sized Combat Scout.
I just can't help it, the ships seem to be mind blowingly light for what they are. I mean, 4 tons? That's 4 Škodas!
or 4/5 of a mercedes maybach s650.
and the s650 can't even be had with shields.
The game has Federation ships & Imperial ships. I think its sadly lacking some Alliance specific ships. I think the designers could really let their imaginations go wild with Alliance ships since they dont have to look like anything that either the Federation or Empire have. It would also be good if they brought some ships from the original 1984 game back like the Krait which has been mentioned on the official forums quite a few times.
the chieftain looks so much like the panther clipper but smaller with the engines attached to ailerons rather than directly to the hull
On the subject of small fighters, I'd like more variety in them and use perhaps slightly bigger fighter type craft, that would serve as a sort of speedboat on a yacht. So I would leave the bigger ship in orbit of a planet and fly around in the smaller one.
This came up in my RUclips feed 5 years after it was made.
So far we have the Krait MkII and Phantom from the list.
Oh FDev...
3:00 reading from the "original" Commodore 64 manual. Ahem. The original manual would be from the BBC Micro version of the game.
Panther clipper is the ship im most interested in can't wait to see how it looks a feels when it finally gets added.
I would like to see the Turner Class from Frontier First Encounters make it as a ship you need an alliance rank for.
Straga27 Maybe they could do similar to how some stations have a capital shipyard outside. they could have exterior docking..? Maybe...
Philip Adam. wow. yeah. thats a good idea that would be really cool if they did something like that
Nice video Ant, you are the biggest reason I still get hyped for Elite
FD should make a joint venture with EdgeCase Ltd (Fractured Space, the game) and get instant capital ships with sleek design.
I'd love to fly these ships in the Elite galaxy... (dream on)
Frontier should consider external docking clamps in stations where a huge ship wont fit between the mail slot.
***Some other things they need in the game***
They need to at least double the number of ships, their simply aren't enough to give you a sense of identity in the game.
Ships large enough to land multiple ships on in various fashions (closed hanger, landing pads, docking ports)
They need to add a lot of new ground vehicles. Tanks, anti air, cargo trucks, trains and personal vehicles.
These things take dev time but they could be implemented because the platform can support so much more than we are getting.
Deno Moto Why would you need a firefighter in space..?
i love the boeing like snout from the imperial courier concept. it would have been a better design than the final one since the courier we have now is not looking like its size. the cockpit makes the ship look incredibly small. but cou could actually fit a cinema bank in there or... like its something like 7 diameters across. it just doesnt fit its size visually.
Tell frontier to design a ship like that!
Great video as always !
So excited to see the new ships in the future.
The last ship mentioned looks suspiciously like a Hull series ship from Star Citizen. Or rather the Hull ships look suspiciously like it.
With the size and possible scope of the game I wonder if in game clans or fighter wing groups (CLANS) will become available and how big will player ships start becoming in the future will we see players being able to purchase or build capitol ships or destroyer's for use as a clan base or mobile base.
I have fond memories of my Panther Clipper. (Frontier on Atari ST)
Great Vid! Looking forward to seeing something larger than what we have now, i just hope it something we can pilot :D
most of the Elite Grindy's ships looks like designer just decide to do something quickly......very unimaginative ships.
@ObsidianAnt they could make bigger player ships. Dont you remember they do have those new capital ship docking bays ;). Possibly pointing at bigger ships coming ?
4 years later, the Krait 2 is one of my favorite ships
I am waiting for the next ship update, I ditched the game just before 2.2, there is nothing for me more to do other than wait somewhere to spend my 500mil.
A fully equipted Anaconda is worth a lot more than 500
Yup i have one standing at 342mil. mostly for trading and have other ships too, plus that extra 500mil. that I can't spend anywhere :/, I just need something bigger, meaner and new.
George Arx Cutter/Corvette
I wonder if they will add the ASP MK II in and maybe another Cobra. I do love the Cobra.
So is that the correct way?
id like to ses all these ships introduced to add variety into the game and more choice for the players.
I believe the courier concept you showed is actually a cutter concept.
plot twist, no new ships
YAAAY anther Obsidiant Ant videoo :D
Well done, as usual.
I hope that there will be more ships in the future. The Direction what Elite takes is awesome!
greetings
matze
planetary annihilator , series 7, overcharged engines
klingt doch viel besser als
class 6, C rated thrusters with grade 2 clean drive tunings.
I think the panther clipper should be around the same size if not bigger then the beluga
Wow, thanks for the nostalgia trip!
Now we have fleet carriers the Panther Clipper seems a bit tiny.
I really don't understand why the can't translate the scale of the cockpit into a live asset. Makes no sense at all why the clipper has that MASSIVE canopy on it.
great videos obsidianant.
i do think we need some new ships.
especially in the lets say 6 to 25 million range some alien tech would be great.
I really can't wait to walk arround in my ships. It would definetly help the game with the sence of scale.
I flew The Lion and Clipper! Memories.
18 months later.... and we haven't got any of these ships yet. The Chieftan is no Panther Clipper. The iClipper is also no Panther.
Maybe we'd have more ships in the game, and more progress in general, if FD weren't so preoccupied with nerfing everything in sight and continually fiddling at the peripheries.
