Just fyi there are some mildly toxic chemicals in the original hoppes No. 9. There's lots of youtube videos about it. But do whatever works for you, just wanted you to have that information.
I was aware of the original Hoopes No 9 toxic formula but they also make a non toxic version of Hoppes No 9. I have and use both. The newer stuff works almost as well, but when you really need to clean a stubborn bore the original formula is still best. I use the new stuff about 98% of the time now.
I keep a bottle of Hoppes for normal cleaning, but noticed that Kerosene is the main ingredient. When getting the cosmo off milsurps, I soak all the metal parts in a tub of Kerosene since a gallon of that is much cheaper than the several bottles of Hoppes I would need.
I was imprinted early as my dad cleaned his shotgun with Hoppes No. 9. I still use Hoppes along with several others depending on what I am cleaning and it always brings back good memories of my Dad.
he's like - dude - it's my rifle and you took it away and are sticking your grubby fingers all over it... I just want to go do high damage... and you took it away. I'm telling mom!

But...............
@SicSemperEvelloMortemTyrannis TyrannyEnder yeah I like to put the hoppes 9 "gun medic lube" on my junk as lube for those "conservative" broads, the lefties too!
Hey Reid, thanks for all your great videos! I've specifically been looking for a video like this. I run one of my ar's suppressed and after a hundred or so rounds I had a problem with the bolt carrier not completing the cycle. I was mainly using oil. I've started using more grease on the bolt carrier and haven't had a problem. Thanks again and God Bless you!!!
I had repeated failures on a AR when I was out shooting. I gave up and said it done I’m going to take it home and see what’s going on. I dropped the mag cycled it a few times and thought I’m clear. I took it home and when I took it out to clean it and look it over I noticed a round stuck in the chamber still. I got it out and realized it was a live round. I found a broken extractor. I realized then why it’s so important to actually look in the chamber or even feel and not just assume it’s empty. Things go wrong and in this case luckily I never pointed at anyone or pulled the trigger or anything.
With a .223/ 5.56 NATO rifle, ditch the cleaning rod. Cut a piece of .095 string trimmer line about 12" longer than your barrel. Sharpen one end with a knife and heat/melt the other end into a ball (tad smaller than.22 cal) . Use the sharp end to puncture cloth/flannel .22 patches and pull these patches through the bore. A few drops of solvent add to the patch followed up with a bore snake gets the bore nice and clean. This works well on all my .22 cal rifles.
Thanks Reid! Just bought my first AR due to the madness with the rioting (already had a handgun), and really appreciate how in depth you went and what you used. Really professional. Stay safe out there brother, God bless you!
I didnt think this vedeo was going to help so much with my new gun. I lubed it up and it runs way smoother than when i got it bran new. Thanks a lot man
Excellent video and thank you for making it. The only issue I can say I had with it was visibility, so dark that sometimes it was hard to see where you were applying oil/solvent.
As someone who just ordered a non NFA firearm built off the extar exp 556, thanks for the video. Basically the same parts and function, just with a cut down AR BCG modified for side charging and a recoil spring without a buffer tube. Now I can strip it down and clean it quickly once it's done being built so I can get to shooting!
Reid. Perfect timing for this video. Just pieced together my first AR. The BCG was the last piece and I just picked that up. You may have thought this was a useless video to make but this is exactly the info I hoped to find. Hey thanks, Just bought my first AR and followed your cleaning guide. (had to watch like 10 times haha) went shooting today worked great and had a blast! Have a great a day, keep up the great videos.

Holy shit! Your bro looks like he's Atleast 25 and he's only now just buying his first gun?!? Reid's Heinrich brother!?!? WTF, I can't believe you weren't kicking his nerdy ass every other day of the week!! LOL
What I usually do is what you do with the HOPPEs #9, with an AP Brush and patches, however I use brake cleaner blasting it all off, then relubricate with 3 n 1 oil, it works just as well as the others and unlike CLP doesn't leave an odor. Oh yeah, "Semper Fi!" brotherman. Welcome home.
I love that every single AR I was handed was not in the safe position, I cleared and verified every one before I looked down the sights, I also Cleared and made sure they were safe before handing them back to anybody else, bolt locked back and visually verifying with conformation from the person you are handing it to.
I was taught to always clean and relube a new firearm. Many of the oils on a brand new firearm are preservatives only and provide no ware protection at all. Good job and advice Reid !! We'll keep ya.
WOW how old is that Larry Bird shirt!!!! I haven’t seen one of those since I was in middle school in the early 90’s Starter was the shit back then you need to frame that!!!!!

I’m a colt certified armorer... pretty good video. I’d wipe/ rub most of that grease off too. Civilians won’t have much issue but police (me) and military might have problems...
excellent video on cleaning any AR style rifle. One suggestion to anyone reading this, use the Hoppe's #9 patches during cleaning until they no-longer show any solvent. At that point you have a clean part. At that point, you can start wiping the part with a clean pad. I do this with each and every firearm and have never had a misfire due to the firearm...EVER!
There’s just something satisfying about taking a gun apart, cleaning, lubing, putting it back together. I’ve never done it, but totally enjoy watching people do it. Someday, that will be me.
hey, question. why would you take off the factory grease and then relubricate the gun? couldn't you wait until the gun gets dirty to regrease it? I thought guns need to be lubricated
Always a good idea to full strip, clean, and lube a brand new firearm. It will break in better and last longer. Consider it your initial inspection. Many times the mfg will use preservatives and/or rust inhibitors like cosmoline which is good for long term storage but turns into tar as soon as it mixes with gas blowback and powder residue. Some firearms even come out of the box bone dry! It’s important to have proper “operating lubrication” during the initial/break in process because the parts haven’t worn together and will tend to be rough. I wouldn’t, however, use as much as the gentleman in the video, that was a bit heavy for an AR. Store em wet, shoot em dry (or at least with minimal but necessary lubrication).
I'm getting an m&p 15 sport ll for my birthday, I'm very pleased to see so many positive reviews. I have never seen the firing pin before. It looks just like a long pop rivet.
This is a great video, I like what you did here. You brought in a regular guy(in this case victim(your brother)) to address regular guy concerns about the first purchase. It was really nicely done. One question, was he a willing victim? The dude looks like he does not wanna be there in the beginning.
O lordy, I forgot Reid was one of those "grease guys". I won't second guess a guy who does this for a living, but I can't stand to shoot a gun that's been greased.

Don't oil your fire controls. You are just asking for carbon fouling and dirt accumulation. With the exception of the extreme environments mentioned it is completely unnecessary
cool man, i just got my BCL 102 Ar-10 style Rifle in 308 win. Here in Canada it is one of the few AR style rifles we are allowed to have here, I Really appreciate the help in cleaning and oiling it, Can't wait to send a bunch of rounds through her at the range this week! I subbed as well! Cheers!
Awesome job on this video brother! Just bought my first AR and was looking for a video to show me what to clean and lube before going to the range. You made it very clear and easy to understand. Thank you!
Neither is "better" than the other. The AR is more accurate however with the 5.56. Also when you run out and can just pop in the second mag and fire is a nice engineering feat of the AR
Very good video and advice about safety and training. I hope your brother always thinks safety. Darn it, I didn't know you should tear-down to remove factory oils and solvents.
Reid, thank you so much for this and ALL your videos. I ordered my first firearm (AR-15) and you have shown my operation, cleaning and many other things I wouldn’t have known to ask. Definitely will take courses but I have a much better understanding. Larry Bird should be wearing YOUR shirt. Huge thanks!
lol Agreed 100% on the grease. Years ago I was one of those that just had to try every new magic lube that hit the market. I spent a small fortune but finally realized that nothing works better than a standard old grease. I now have a big old tub of white lithium hi temp grease that I paid $20 for 15 years ago & I still have some left. That works great in the summer, winters I just use a light synthetic motor oil. A $7 quart of Royal Purple works at least as well as $15 an ounce "specialty" lubes. Pay for ammo, not overpriced lube.
I loved his answer, "because you told me". Reminds me of my older brother teaching me when I first started out. Your a great brother Reid.

hey, question. why would you take off the factory grease and then relubricate the gun? couldn't you wait until the gun gets dirty to regrease it? I thought guns need to be lubricated
I shot all 3 of my Glocks straight out of the box. Both of my ARs, AK, and shotgun, when new, I gave a quick cleaning and lube before shooting.
2 Gods Debate Like Reid explains. The factory fluids are manufacturing process fluids and preservatives...NOT...lubricants.
Factory machine oils are cutting lubrications. They are meant to help metal cut through metal, not protect.
Great tips Reid. 🖒

Don't oil your fire controls. You are just asking for carbon fouling and dirt accumulation. With the exception of the extreme environments mentioned it is completely unnecessary
Great video I agree 100% with your process. Glad to see more people out there using grease on the gun over just gun oil
Mind blown, I work with your brother......
Lol
cool man, i just got my BCL 102 Ar-10 style Rifle in 308 win. Here in Canada it is one of the few AR style rifles we are allowed to have here, I Really appreciate the help in cleaning and oiling it, Can't wait to send a bunch of rounds through her at the range this week! I subbed as well! Cheers!
Reid you could have bought him a BCM Recce.
easy and straight forward for the novice. Great job. Appreciated it.
Look how he strokes the spring, I used to do that for horse breeding.
Awesome job on this video brother! Just bought my first AR and was looking for a video to show me what to clean and lube before going to the range. You made it very clear and easy to understand. Thank you!
He will soon discover the magical AK 47.
cigarsarge1 Amazing weapon
ar15 better
is not
reid is an ak guy, i am surprised he didn't have his brother get an ak.
Neither is "better" than the other. The AR is more accurate however with the 5.56. Also when you run out and can just pop in the second mag and fire is a nice engineering feat of the AR
Clean vid. No BS. No stupid background music. Thanx!
Dude u need to watch gunblues cleaning vid ! Lol its not a tractor no firearm needs that much juice in it! Lmfao
The Train made me cringe. I can understand a lube film but this guy went all out with the grease
Very good video and advice about safety and training. I hope your brother always thinks safety.
Darn it, I didn't know you should tear-down to remove factory oils and solvents.
he does not seem happy
Reid, thank you so much for this and ALL your videos. I ordered my first firearm (AR-15) and you have shown my operation, cleaning and many other things I wouldn’t have known to ask. Definitely will take courses but I have a much better understanding. Larry Bird should be wearing YOUR shirt. Huge thanks!
I just took the online carry test I past with flying colors
TheRoadhammer379 bruh too savage 😂
Congrats Dawn
Lol
Great video! Thanks for posting this on how to clean one and not need a ton of tools or products to clean an AR-15.
An AR doesn't need to be babied this hard. Just shoot the damn thing..
while I agree I would inspect all the parts and replace the grease with canola oil.
It’s fresh from the factory.every gun should be babied on the first clean and grease. After that you can fudge a bit
lol Agreed 100% on the grease.
Congrats and its addicting ;)
Awesome vid. Help me alot. Purchased my first AR (what not a better time) and followed this step by step.
From a fellow history fanatic: love the Reagan quote.
I love your channel . So pleasant to listen too.
