      Raw Technique Studios we appreciate you brother. I starting at ground zero trying to record my music but I have no idea how to hook up my 2 channel interface to my laptop and microphone to be able to record my vocals into my cpu. I have the Magic Music Maker Plus Edition. If you have time, I would appreciate your input as to what I need.

      @@Deetruckin hey, sorry for the late response I barely saw this. But you would use a XLR cable from Mic to Interface then the interface should connect via USB or Thunderbolt or Firewire

      Raw Technique Studios not a prob bro. That was exactly it. I’ve been recording for a few weeks now. Only to find out that the guy at our guitar center here in Dayton,Ohio recommended a mic for me that was actually a mic for performing and not recording.
      And me not knowing the difference fell for it. But everyone that here’s my music day they are really impressed with how I made it sound, but now I’m lookin for a better mic that won’t hit my pocket to hard lol

    @gtahero I like using a compressor before it goes in the computer because I get a controlled signal and the Pro VLA 2 adds a color to the signal that I like.

      I am a horrible singer haha, I would not be a good vocal couch at all. If you have recording/mixing questions or home studio questions ask away.

      You can look up lessons online but off the top of my head I don't know any vocal coaches. You might be asking for a producer and it depends where you live. Just hit up studios near you.

      I personally would advice against driving a signal through a compressor before it hits the computer, if the compression messes up the sound it's virtually impossible to undo.. Have you considered using a brickwall instead? That way you can still make sure no clipping occurs but the signal will still remain raw and under total control.. You could then drive the signal out from the computer and through the compressor once you start mixing?

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  10 лет назад +2

      I use to be against compression before printing the audio also because of the commitment. But after my professor in college being a huge fan of light compression before printing I decided to practice doing it and I love it. I make sure to never over compress because I know you are stuck with it and there is no going back. I always do light compression and make sure the recording is solid and still has life to it before recording.
      Brick wall limiting is not a issue in the studio environment because we can redo tracking so we set our levels at a low level and make sure to not get close to clipping. I can turn it up later. Brick wall limiting is great for live performances so the band never clips. Also radio uses brick wall limiting to ensure a loud level and no clip.
      It all comes down to preference and I prefer to commit to the beautiful sound of light compression during recording. If you are not over compressing you are good to go. And my professor was a Mastering Engineer for Sony so he knows his compression haha.

    @Mulu Brhan It is not "better" it is different. It compresses before the audio is printed in Pro Tools. The plugins in Pro Tools or any DAW affect the already recorded audio not the incoming audio like a outboard compressor does.

    I have been searching youtube for videos on everything from the basics to setting up a studio to complicated audio information. I am an analog age person. I recorded when cut and paste was actually cutting a piece of audio tape with a razor blade. So it's important to understand details that someone who grew up in a digital world would just take for granted. Thi is really the best video I found for giving the basic for setting up a studio. There are so many videos in an amazing studio and two minutes in your lost because their assumption of what should be basic knowledge is much to complex. You video does what it says, explains everything clearly, and taking apart and putting your studio back together is a great idea. Your explanations are clear and give the information that is the most essential. You don't go off on stories and superfluous information. Anything that isn't covered, the comments section will help with that. Hope you don't mind my mini-review of video I may (OR MAY NOT) being doing some work reviewing audio related web-sites and youtube videos, and thought your video was a good place to try some things.

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  9 лет назад +2

      You would need to have multiple outputs. Some interfaces/mixers have more than just main outs 1-2. so you would go 3-4.

    Good video. I found a big improvement in my sound once I incorporated a lot more outboard equipment into my signal chain.Namely high quality mics ( AKG , Shure etc. ) , high quality preamps ( Neve , Sebatron etc. ) and good monitoring ( KrK , Genelec etc. ) In all I spent a lot of money but the results were well worth it.

      I Agree To The Fact That You Can Get A Good Mix Provided You Learn & Know Your Studio Monitors Well 😏
      But Jeez! #KRKs Make Poor Studio Monitors In My Opinion 😃
      Even The #M-Audios Make Good Studio Monitors Compared To The #KRKs ☺
      But Both #KRKs & #M-Audios Are Nothing In Comparison To The #Yamahas & The #JBLs 😉
      The #Focals & The #Adams're Great Too, Though Alittle Bit Expensive 😃
      But The #Yamahas & The #JBLs Are The Best Deal For Their Price 🤙

      @@champsinger These nicer mics frequently require a 48v power source of some kind to work. My first attempt at plugging my Peavey cheap mic directly into my computer's mic port did not give very good results. A simple $45 second hand MBox2 audio-interface changed everything and now my lovely Shure KSM27 sounds great.

    hey, first of all thank you for this wonderful video. also i wanted to ask is a pre amp needed if u have a good quality interface, and what are the benefits of having an external compressor in your opinion. because I'm thinking if i should buy a good interface along with a compressor rather than buying a good interface and also a preamp.

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  9 лет назад +2

      +EL NUEVE REAL (EL Nueve Real) You must have a preamp to record. It is what makes the microphone signal loud enough to be heard. But inside most interfaces are preamps. I use the stock pre's inside my interface. So it is optional to get an external pre or use the stock inside your interface. But it is a must to use a preamp. The compressor is optional. I like it for recording but you don't need it. The benefit is a way to control the dynamics before entering the computer.

    • @shamanbeartwo3819
      @shamanbeartwo3819 6 лет назад

      According to their website, you just plug the Yeti into the computer. If you take a look at the specs, you will notice first thing is that the power required is 5v (which is pretty small). My Shure KSM27 requires 48v of power and if I just plugged it into the computer it would not work very well, if at all.
      Also, if you wanted to use more than one mic at a time like 8 or 9 mics to record a drum set, you would definitely want an interface similar to the one shown in the video so you could have each mic going to its own track.

    I'm trying to figure if this would be cheaper then going to a professional recording studio. I have no programming skills when it comes to these soft wear for music mixing. I need a soft proof room because I'm a singer too. Just wondering if it's worth it if i do a home studio or just go to a professional one.

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  8 лет назад

      Depends how often you need to record music. If it's only once in a while then it's cheaper to go to a studio.

    • @hollypattersonwriter

      Raw Technique Studios
      well I have so many songs and plan to make lots of albums. I figure it would be better in a professional studio however typically it could cost me 900 a day and that's not counting the hired muisicians I have to pay. I feel like it also would be a mistake because then I would feel too rushed because I'm on their time. the other issue is that I don't own a home yet so making a studio in a rented place seems dumb if it's going cost thousands to sound proof it. So i feel pretty stuck at the moment. Any suggestions

    • @RawTechniqueStudios
      @RawTechniqueStudios  8 лет назад +7

      I have been renting since I started my studio and have moved twice. When in a home I just put up acoustic panels and foam for acoustic control and it worked great. Plus the benefits of your own studio are amazing. As much time as you need, stop and go whenever.... Don't look too much into soundproofing the room. Just treat it with panels.
      When I moved to a commercial building I spent thousands on treatment inside the walls, and outside the walls and it sounded great but I was getting the same quality in a bedroom with basic treatment and nothing inside the walls.

    • @hollypattersonwriter

      Raw Technique Studios
      oh my goodness thank you so much for that advice. I want it to sound very professional though like good enough for radio play. Do you think that's possible. I already know I need a Apple computer so I'll be getting that. Do I need musicians though? I want to be a solo artist and don't have much time to develop a band any suggestions. How much would all this cost me. I'm figuring in the long run I'll save a lot. what microphone do I need for my voice?

    • @hollypattersonwriter
      @hollypattersonwriter 8 лет назад

      Raw Technique Studios
      couldn't I just hire one dude to do all the musical bad technical stuff. I'm the singer song writer so i need someone to run the other stuff even though i can play some music like violin and piano by ear i still need to be at a professional level. so I'm wondering if i can get one person to work all this for me.

    THANK YOU!!! Just bought a semi complete starter home recording pkg fr eBay just to get started. We have a big family so no extra space but I cleared out the top section of an armoire where I keep some of my eBay selling merch and set up the tiny recording stuff we got! Thank you thank you! God bless you on your endeavors - rachel

    Good advice.The biggest improvement I got to my sound was when I upgraded my mic to an AKG C214 with a Sebatron preamp. The tubes in the preamp make the mike sound like butter. Great video keep it up !

      @RawTechniqueStudios  7 лет назад

      In my defense the desk I'm using is from Ikea so it's not all that great lol. But yeah you need some type of desk and if it looks good then thats a bonus.

      could you provide me with a link to the desk you bought? I can't find it on ikea.. p.s. these desks go for like 2 grand otherwise! thats crazy

    I don't know you dude, but that was more informative than most videos in this category. Explaining everything in detail with step by step instructions, although technically it was backward by installing then shopping; you were very creative. You should probably update the video with how the studio is coming along and changes you have made since 2014. Thanks for a great video.

    Wow!!!! for along long time i`m thinking of switching from old school ,analog,reel to reel tape recording to digital computerized recording,don`t get me wrong i still love the analog reel to reel style ,BUT,they don`t make tape no more or they`re expensive if i found one, this is the best tudorial ever i came across ,you took time to dismanltle n to re hook up all the units together,it take times but you did you `ve been helpful n i feel encouraged to make my move as i mentioned earlier,thank you so so much ,im` gonna follow you,respectz!!!!!n appreciated!!!!
