    Great review for an excellent bottle of whisky. Edradour is famed to be the smallest distillery in Scotland and they still use their small stills dating back to the old days. I had the pleasure of visiting this distillery and tasting some of their bottles. This is one of their best and one of the most complex sherry bombs out their on the market. For the price and an age statement, wonderful value for money.

    Super glad you mentioned all the great things I'm looking for in the finish. Was kind of worried about this because of the sweet flavors at the beginning, but it seems as if this one comes through for what am hoping to find in my next bottle, which are the earthy, orange peel, dark chocolate, leathery notes and the like, that you talk about and allude to, and other reviews also mention. Thanks for the great review and am looking even more forward now into exploring this scotch at Xmas. As an amateur that has had a few, mostly easy on the beginner drams, this will be an adventure. I've heard over and over that this one requires patience to allow all the flavors to come through and will give it that.

    I have a few bangers on my shelf... Arran 18, Glenscotia 18, Glendronach 18... many, many others (no 21's yet though, Whisky is truly expensive in Brazil). The Caledonia can go head to head with any of them and most times it is going to win. This is a heavy hitter. Dirty Sherry describes it better than anything.
    It wasn't love at first sight though probably due to my own off expectations... I thought (for some reason) it was going to be sweet, fruity, jammy... it has a bit of that but it's way more savory and dry. But boy oh boy, once you get past your own expectations and start appreciating it for what it is (and possibly after the bottle has some air time), this really, really shines. It loves oxidation. I'm glad I still have another sealed bottle of this so I can appreciate it guilty free (of running out).

    I'm not heavy sherry guy, but do love this tobaccoy non-too-sweet complex sherry cheater! I say cheater cause the price here is just half of Tamdhu 15 which is very delicious , i mean, no contest!
    Would you recommend some other peated whisky similar with this style of sherry?

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 года назад +1

      I'm glad you like it. This is such a stunner for the price! Edradour is known to have some of the richest sherry out there, so there's not a lot that I'd say compares to this, especially for such a great price. Peat + sherry? Even harder. I'm a big fan of Kilchoman Loch Gorm when it comes to peat + sherry, but it's not really similar. Also it's more expensive. Sorry that's a tough one to answer!

    This bottle here, like you say is popular with the Reviewers. Both Ralfy one more told me they like it better than Tamdhu 15.
    As far as it being budget, idk. It’s $92 here in Florida. I’m slightly undecided if I should pull the trigger on it this weekend, or hold on and wait for something else to pop up.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 года назад +4

      @@Gwhisky Btw, isn’t this getting discontinued ? At least this Caledonia “batch” not sure but I think an Edradour rep said so in a comment section of a Ralf vlog. Anyhow I can’t seem to find it except in one single store. After that it’s online only. Also I gotta say, you guys seem to get better prices than even the Scottish! Amazing! Unless it’s just certain brands. To give a rough idea of market where I am. Bladnoch 10 =$50, macallan 12=$60, Glendronach 15=$85-100, Glendronach 18=$220, Bunnahabhain 12=$60-70, Tamdhu 15=$90-125, Deanston 12=$65, Longmorn 16=$125, Laphroaig QC=50-60, JW Black =$30

      Yeah Taiwan is a huge whisky market per capita, and we get some fantastic deals. Scotland ships it to the other side of the world only to sell it off cheaper than in Scotland. Baffling, but I won't complain. No way I'd enjoy as much whisky as I do if I was still in Canada, where bottles often go for about twice the price they are here!

    • @SaltyCuban
      @SaltyCuban 3 года назад +3

      @@Gwhisky Well that’s one incentive to move there. Prices here have jumped up dramatically in the last year. $45 Bottles went up to 60, others from 70 to 100. Not a good time to be a drinker for me. I hope the market regains some stability and also brings prices down. I just can’t afford to buy much lately. Seems like I gotta have $80-90 to buy any bottle I’m looking at lately. I was stunned when I saw not too long ago deanston 12 for $40 at a local shop, then I realized it was old stock. Once they ran out and brought in new ones they were priced at 65. Insane.

One question I have which I've been meaning to ask you, how do you get so much on the palate without keeping the liquid in your mouth very long? It seems I keep the whisky in my mouth for a good 10-15 seconds per sip (of course depending on the age) and I don't seem to get half as much as you do. I'm fairly positive, but not certain, that single cask whiskies can be finished. Single cask refers to that each batch come from a single cask. Not that it spends its entire life in a single cask. I imagine each batch comes from the sherry butt it was finished in, meaning they probably get about 600 bottles per batch, but I'm speculating on this a bit. I wish they gave us batch information on each release. I've seen many different colors on the caledonia which leads me to believe they are single barrel releases.
