Nice list Geoff. I have the Bladnoch 14 and yes, it is delicious stuff. I’ve never considered a Sherry Bomb list without the usual suspects though, Aberlour, Glenfarclas, etc.. I need to get the Glenturret 12 and a bunch of Signatory releases.

'Darkness' has some great sherry bombs, like their BenRinness 14....
Some of my other fave bombs are Glengoyne 15 PX, Gelston’s 15 Sherry Finish, Arran Bodega, BenRiach 12 Sherry wood, Kavalan Sherry Oak (might not all be considered "under the radar" though)

Good one Geoff, love the look of that OP 16. Ok here we go Glen Garioch at 48% is a belter, I know it's not one of you're faves.
So you're viewers know Edradour is owned by Signatory so that Sig 10 is a must buy.
Glenfarclas 105 is value for money too.
Sad thing is mate over here UK prices for 18yr has took off and the 15yr are a slow climber as you know the money only goes so far, so being a bit more controlled re spending at the moment .

I'm sorry to see the Glenfarclas 185 show up as I had to give up on it earlier this year. It's not something I can find in the states and it was recommended to me over a year ago as something that could help me discover how AGE affects taste. Great list and review as always!
Its also really refreshing to exclude those obvious brands/bottlings that you mentioned and get some more unexpected suggestions. For example I didn't know the Glenfarclas 185 would be so good but You got me curious! Im definetly loving the Old Pulteney 16 - although I tried the lighter (newer) version of it. Same for Bladnoch 14, wonderful dram ( but yeah expensive....)

Very nice list. When I think of underrated sherry bombs, I think of the AnCnoc 18 YO. It's absolutely gorgeous and much more affordable than a Dalmore, Macallan, or even the Bladnoch. It's definitely harder to find here in the states, so I usually have to buy it online and have it shipped to me. But it is worth it. And good call on the Glenlivet. I find the Glenlivet 15 YO to be an excellent daily drinker.
Just curious, what are your thoughts on Highland Park? I think they do an excellent job of using sherry without overdoing it.

The 11 isn't my type of taste as it tastes a bit cheesy, but they made it work and it's interesting so I do enjoy it anyway. Offers something different in my lineup right now :)
Too bad the Pulteney is the older one. What do you think about the newer one, if you tried it? I have enjoyed the 12 from tastings, but I do think it is a bit boring and watered down.

  • @WhoeverNevermind
    @WhoeverNevermind Год назад

Very nice video! I love obscure sherry scotch, even if they are not easy to find in my country, Spain. Your recomendations are mostly excellent... but a bit in the expensive side. I would love for you to make a video like this one but only about the most affordable sherry whisky side of the spectrum.
Glenturret 12 is a whisky that I have still not tried, just because of the very low availability in my country. I know i will try it sooner or later, and I will probably like it a lot. Just a month ago we got the Triple Cask 2023 one, which i think i dont wanna dive into until I try the regular 12 first.
Old Pulteney 16, this old version in particular, is, as far as I know, impossible to get in my country (by regular and legit means... auctions lack this characteristics imho). I'm not the biggest Old Pulteney fan so im OK with it.
Edradour SV is simply one of my favorite whiskys of all time. A litte bit expensive (70€) for its age (10 years) but at 46% AVB, natural colour and non-chill filtered, I think it's worth. Probably one of the whiskys with more personality that i know, you love it or you hate it. For me, its outstanding. Good choice.
I didnt try this particular version or bottling of Glenlivet, but I guess is somewhat similar to their Nadurra Oloroso, which I know very well, and loved every drop of it. So, again, good choice.
I tried the regular Dalmore 12 and, despite liking the general sherried profile, the 40% AVB, the colour added, the chill filtration and specially the abusive price (60€) made me discard this distillery as a viable option. In one word, its so close to a scam I'm not confortable giving them my money. This 12yo sherry edition is way more expensive than the regular 12, so even if I centainly would love to try it, i wont EVER pay the 100€ they are asking for it. For that price I can acquire true legendary bottles, like the Black Friday Caol Ila 16 CS i bought a couple of months ago. Pricey, but absolutely worth it. So, in my opinion, it could be a bad choice to add to a list like this one.
Royal Brackla is a fantastic whisky. Reasonably priced (45€), complex, tons of personality, but pretty forgotten for some reason. Im glad that you mentioned it, it deserves more love for sure.
As a spanish sherry whisky aficionado, I feel pretty lucky because there are many, many sherry bombs produced here that I think are hard or impossible to get abroad. They are produced by sherry bodegas that buy the liquid from Scotland and mature it in their own casks. Just to mention some of them: Valdespino (produced by the bodega of the same name, the best spanish whisky in my opinion, a Palo Cortado bomb, extremely intense and complex), Abducted (produced by Sánchez Romate, the same bodega that produces Cardenal Mendoza's brandy... best quality/price for a sherry bomb i can find at the moment), and Nomad (super cheap, pretty interesting sherry bomb that is very flavourful but the lack of complexity makes it look more similar to a brandy, than a whisky)
    Sorry for my bad english

Unique list as usual from the G-man! Like you the sherry bombs have less appeal to me these days. I did try the Glenturret but found it to be kinda meh to be honest. Haven't been able to track down the revamped Royal Brackla in Canada. Would love to try the Bladnoch 14 but yeah the price is prohibitive. Did you find the 'fermented' fruit notes still detectable through the sherry maturation? I still have a bottle of the 15 Adela from a couple years back in the cellar...so good! But that Glenfarclas 185 is on a whole nuther level for sure! What do I know but it feels like there is a lot of older stock in there. Sublime. Cheers!

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Год назад +1

The Bladnoch still feels like a Bladnoch. Of course, there's sherry in the fore, but you get the house style behind it. Less lactic or fermented than most of their other expressions, though. It's faint. And YES! The Glenfarclas 185 is an absolute killer! Certainly some older stock in there! 🥃

Good list Geoff. We've discussed Glenlivet before and we definitely song from the same song sheet. Those Signatories are very good but the price continues to creep up. I once had a fantastic old Fino expression from them which was quite different from the Oloroso. I've been meaning to give that Royal Brackla a go for a while too. I've got a few suggestions you might like.
Compass Box Spaniard: It's 43% and aged mainly in ex-wine casks but has a lovely sherry profile.
Next up is the Thompson Bros (recently reviewed in Roy's recycling) 6 year blended whisky: It's not coloured or chill-filtered and bottled at 46%. You can pick it up for under £40 and it's great for the money.
Ok, Douglas Laing's Cauldrons Sherry Cask bottled at 50%. It's Campbelltown and sherry. What are you waiting for?
You mentioned an independent so I will to and this is a shout out to all independent bottlers who sometimes really find a good cask combination. James Eadie 10 year old Glen Moray: It's an Oloroso finish but a clean as a whistle sherry style I like. Aberlour more than GlenAllachie. Not many of these about but they are still out there and good value for what you get.
    Cheers.WT

Good suggestions, WT. I've had The Spaniard, which I thought was decent, but I preferred the Spice Tree by some measure. The Thompson Bros. is another one I've looked at, and that one I thought was really solid bang-for-buck sherry. Fully craft presented with a slightly dirty, rich sherry. Really good.
I haven't had that Gauldrons release or the Eadie Moray release. They're now officially on my radar. I'll be on the lookout. Cheers! 🥃

Hmm, standard American accent, but then refers to Celsius instead of Fahrenheit. Where's this guy from? :)

@@Gwhisky ha, I was specifically listening to your outs and abouts and similar sounds, but you don't really pronounce those as a clear giveaway :)

I’m tired of sherry bombs, sherry ruined one of my favorites

I find these videos frustrating because almost none of what you discuss is available in my market.

Understandable. I'm lucky to be in a market that allows me access to a lot of whiskies, but sadly that's not the case for a lot of people. 🥃

I love sherry bombs but don't enjoy sherry on its own. I'm weird.

And what happens if Signatory takes the barrels of Edradour whisky and ages it in a separate location along with all their other distillery barrels? @@Gwhisky
