It may not look as good as the SNES version but compared to most GBC games, this was pretty impressive. I used to have it a long while back but it was lost in a move. I just found a copy of it at a pawn shop a few days ago.
My parents took me to Toys "R" Us around my 11th birthday and I got this game. That was after they took me to see The Grinch in theaters. Not gonna lie, I got fed up with this game because it got way hard so I stopped and finally beat it almost 2 years later.
BaronOfAnarchy, yeah, that game was very difficult, but I played it on the snes. I’m also thinking you watched the live action grinch movie, because you could not watch the original 60s special in theaters and the illumination one did not come out yet.
Mis padres me regalaron el gameboy color en una navidad cuando era niño, y el primer cartucho fue este, como alucinaba con este juego, le tengo tanto cariño a este juego y al gameboy pq es cuando no sabías que eras feliz de niño
I had this game, it was the best thing ever because my parents couldn’t afford the snes when the original came out. This version was very much like the 16 bit version and better yet it was portable...Nostalgia.
I didn't grow up with SNES so when I got this game I thought it was an original GBC game for the longest time, my mind was blown when I learned this was a port
Yo the freaking memories. I had this game and I was so desperate to get to the end. Having that see through purple Game Boy Color and it’s was hard to play during the night so I had a flashlight and headphones so no one could hear me playing. I never got to the end through but it’s nice to see this still exists.
Having played through all three versions of DKC, this one is my favorite out of the three. Don't ask me why. I just like this version a lot and I feel that it deserves more love.
The Gameboy Color wasn't that underpowered, it had 4x times ram than the Gameboy (Pocket) and its processor was more than twice as fast as the one of the SNES.
Oh man, this is pretty impressive for a Gameboy Color game. This, Dragon's Lair, and the canceled Resident Evil port all are simply mind blowing to see running on a god damn Gameboy.
Wow, this looks impressive on Gameboy Color. I'd still choose the GBA version over this one because it looks better (inevitable since it had better hardware), but I actually want to try this one out
DKC for the GBC and Pokemon Crystal were the first games I ever got. I actually had a GBA and never owned a GBC. I miss coming home after school and playing these. DBZ, Pokemon, and Yugioh used to come on tv everyday. Monday Nights were the best too. We had WWF and WCW AND Monday Night Football on at the same time, and then we would talk about the best parts at school the next morning. Yes Sir, times were better than ☺️
I never played this version of DKC but it is amazing that they pulled this off and for a GBC game it looks great. It’s also cool that Rare used the music from Donkey Kong Land in many of the levels.
Experiencing major flashbacks with this one. The year is 2001. I'm 11 years old. My only gaming option is GBC. Got the game as a present from mom. The game is awesome, really challenging, but still awesome. Then I hit the ELEVATOR ANTICS level, the one with moving elevators and goddamn birds. IT KICKED MY ASS! HARD! I was trying to beat this level for 3 YEARS every evening. Idk what was wrong with me because i was clearing Contra 3 port on GBC and Castlevania on my friends NES pretty easily at that point, but this level just was not cooperating with me. Its like PTSD for me right now just listening to music from that stage, I'm feeling like traumatized war veteran ffs. The feeling when I had beaten it... Its just unexplainable. GREAT GAME 10/10 WOULD TRAUMATIZE MYSELF AGAIN!
while the graphics are zoomed in and somewhat muddy and correlated compared to the snes version, i have to say that this version is still amezing considering the hardware, in fact it required the mbc5 chip to handle all the extra graphical tile sets including sprite data and the larger rom size, since the gameboycolor has no transparancy support, rare used lots of sprites to mimmick transparrancy effects, such as those bubbles in the water or the scrolling tekst in the backgrounds, interestingly enough, rare ware just used tile sets in those bonus rooms were you have to collect as much golden animals as possible,i first Always tout they were sprites but it turns out they are BG tile sets, wich means, those tile sets getting updated in realtime they more golden animals you grab, while the bananas are sprite based, those coins in these mario games are oddly BG tile based.
WAY better than the GBA port. The music and graphics tries its best to capture the general feel of SNES Donkey Kong Country. GBA botched it. Honestly seems *very* advanced for a GBC game as well.
Supermarioworld should,ve be a better kandidate for the GBC and not donkeykong country since that game already pushed the snes hardware,BUT rare did it anyway and the results look good on the GBC but on the gba sp with improved backlight or on the gameboyplayer, the colors just look waaay too overbrighted and muddy.
Honestly this port isn’t bad but I would play any other port of this game this game even DKL is better in my opinion I think they should have remade DKL 1 & 2 and localized the DKL 3 GBC port
You gotta admire what they've done with the GBC hardware limitations.
Good thing the Visibility isn't shit like in DKL
die haben da alles raus geholt was ging mit der hardware vom gbc
Rare really pushed the gameboy to the max with this..
And perfect dark
And Nintendo themselves pushed it to the max with Wario Land 3
It may not look as good as the SNES version but compared to most GBC games, this was pretty impressive. I used to have it a long while back but it was lost in a move. I just found a copy of it at a pawn shop a few days ago.
Yea but the bad controls in the GBC version kinda ruins it.
@@blockyboy1234 What "bad controls?" You're a fool.
I'm legitimately astonished that this game was even able to be made. It looks absolutely gorgeous for a Game Boy Color game.
Indeed it does
*kolor
This game was amazing, it passed the time during my visits to court when I was getting adopted
To this day, I still don't know how RARE got this amazing game to run on the GBC. They are gaming legends.
*were
You don't just ride the animal buddies....you BECOME the animal buddies.
"no, diddy. you ARE the animals"
and then diddy was a rhino.
I guess that had to be done to not push the gbc beyond its limits
Basically this was the first we've seen of DKC2 and 3's Animal Barrels that turn you into the animal buddies. :)
My parents took me to Toys "R" Us around my 11th birthday and I got this game. That was after they took me to see The Grinch in theaters. Not gonna lie, I got fed up with this game because it got way hard so I stopped and finally beat it almost 2 years later.
BaronOfAnarchy wow
Cappri Jimenez I know, how dare they take a child to watch The Grinch...
I didn't really mind it tbh. Not my favorite, but it's whatever.
BaronOfAnarchy, yeah, that game was very difficult, but I played it on the snes. I’m also thinking you watched the live action grinch movie, because you could not watch the original 60s special in theaters and the illumination one did not come out yet.
Lololol
lol looks very similar to the original SNES Version :D
Very good for a gameboy color game.
Looks nowhere near similar but still pretty good
Weird, the menu was styled after DK64.
Yeah noticed
It was made to be a companion game for 64.
This is a great port! It's almost like an NES version of the game.
Ikr
@shadow kirby a GOOD 8-bit version.
33:40 The music is killer. The composers just went WILD with the soundtrack. Respect.
How they transferred the original scores to gameboy is unbelievable
Same from donkey kong land
impressive for a snes to game boy conversion
that's why youtube recommended this to me
Mis padres me regalaron el gameboy color en una navidad cuando era niño, y el primer cartucho fue este, como alucinaba con este juego, le tengo tanto cariño a este juego y al gameboy pq es cuando no sabías que eras feliz de niño
I gotta say, the final boss troll is even more trollish in this version, imagine going through that blind
I had this game, it was the best thing ever because my parents couldn’t afford the snes when the original came out. This version was very much like the 16 bit version and better yet it was portable...Nostalgia.
Ew
Gameboy Advance is better, but oh boy this game looks and sounds great!
@@zzzszxc3285 SNES version best graphics and best soundtrack
@@alienxotic5028 for me the gbc has more nostalgia

Wow nice game! This is how Donkey Kong Land should have been made like...
Kjamgo Except DKL was different than the SNES game.
I noticed the recycled a lot of the music/sound effects from Donkey Kong Land for this game. Not that it's bad of course, just something I noticed.
@@MissJackietheLakester I know it was the only original unlike donkey Kong land 2 and 3 which were very closely the same to their counterparts.
@@PaloJaurez Land 3 did change and add a few new original ideas, but for the most part they are similar.
Ah the nostalgia!! Playing this as a kid on my lime green Gameboy boy color, good times 😊
Rare was just legendary back than
Having played through all three versions of DKC, this one is my favorite out of the three. Don't ask me why.
I just like this version a lot and I feel that it deserves more love.
I kind of agree. I’ve only played the SNES version, but I really want to play this version after I finish with DKC3.
Sweet! Hopefully you enjoy playing through this version of DKC.
And you have to play the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country as well.
This version in 2000 was fucking incredible, I couldn't believe that full game (even with gbc limitations) was portable
Despite limitations, they did an impressive job recreating everything in 8-bit graphics. I was really amazed with this version.
The Gameboy Color wasn't that underpowered, it had 4x times ram than the Gameboy (Pocket) and its processor was more than twice as fast as the one of the SNES.
You’re giving me hope with this let’s play. I think I’ll pick this game up again after 10 years.
I loved the game when I was a kid. I had my gameboy color all the way up to 2013 I think
When I was a kid I got so addicted to that fishing minigame.
This was my first video game and it was great to revisit this after losing the cartridge
Such great memories I remember playing this game as a kid
i still ask myself why they used the menu of dk64 for this game
Why not?
The The End music makes me wanna cry.
somehow, the lack of smoothness compared to the snes version makes the mine cart adventure more exciting
Oh man, this is pretty impressive for a Gameboy Color game. This, Dragon's Lair, and the canceled Resident Evil port all are simply mind blowing to see running on a god damn Gameboy.
I still play this game
Is... every song in this port carried over from Donkey Kong Land? Because I recognize the Kremlantis tune in Slipslide Ride
Most of them are
I find it funny how the snow mountain levels use the Ice Cave Chant, while the crystal level (where that song played) plays Kremlantis for some reason
Wow, this looks impressive on Gameboy Color. I'd still choose the GBA version over this one because it looks better (inevitable since it had better hardware), but I actually want to try this one out
I remember ALL the SFX and Music! I used to play this while in the Bathroom at home....

It looks like most of the game is still intact. That's kinda crazy. Never knew this existed.
I had this game and loved it. It was amazing that Rare managed to port DKC to the GBC. This was before the GBA port if I recall correctly.
Experiencing major flashbacks with this one. The year is 2001. I'm 11 years old. My only gaming option is GBC. Got the game as a present from mom. I beat this game a long time ago (I just found my old Gameboy color), and it was really good for a Gameboy remake.
The levels in the mines made me go crazy they were so hard (i was 8)
I got this for my 9th birthday when it came out. It was really hard but made me good at platforming games.
I never played the SNES version, so the Gameboy Color version was basically my childhood.
this was the first video game I ever played true story
How come this version never made it to the 3DS virtual console?

This is what Donkey Kong Country would've been like if it was released on the NES
Skip Gordon No
Your friendly average neighbourhood demon How come?
Not even close.
GBC has more ram and video ram.
No, this look only exists because it's trying to emulate the look of the SNES version.
Memories
Honestly I like this port for the silent reason of its design
Although it is in gameboy color, water levels kept great soundtracks...
Donkey Kong Country brings so much memories
That menu screen is from DK64, isn't it?
This looks like it could have been done on NES, in a good way. This pushed the GameBoy Color’s graphic capabilities.
41:05 jajajaja x3 the sound of the steel barrel is so cute
No, MMMWWWWWAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jack Moon LMAO
Remember this being my first gbc game back when i was 6. Was NOT ready for 4-1 (didn't know the skip...)
Why was there even 2 versions of DKC1, more so why did they make a Japan-exclusive color port of DKL3
Why is all of Rare's Gameboy title screens nightmare fuel?
The music 8s really good especially the water parts
I loved the fishing minigame when I was little:)
Wait wasnt the gbc or gb 8bit? How did they make the sprites look so good without 16bit?
This was my very first GBC game!
I feel some memberberries
The palette for Oil Drum Alley almost looks really similar to Scrap Brain Zone
It kinda sucks that they didn’t make a sequel: Dkc2: Diddy’s kong quest Gbc
