      Finally watched after all of this time. I knew about this information after doing some digging on Reddit after finishing the campaign. My issue is that the campaign doesn't directly pick up from Black Ops 2 or include any of the characters from BO1 or BO2. It lazily calls back to 'Cordis Die' and then just moves on with new characters and a new plot.
      That being said, I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered the campaign was out of chronological order and followed alternate timelines from different perspectives. My initial assumption, which is why I was so mad about the campaign, is that it was a lazy, confusing mess that had nothing to with the original Black Ops series. Treyarch actually _did_ the opposite; they made it so intricate and well-thought-out that almost no one fully understands the complexity of the story on their first play through.
      The BO3 campaign is proof that Treyarch has some brilliant writers, but they missed out on the opportunity to follow up BO2's campaign and create a story that's more palatable for the casual COD crowd. I applaud them and respect their decision to go above and beyond that though.
      Also, this video was really well done, Ethos.

    Apparently the campaign was actually meant to be an open world campaign but they realized they did not have enough time to do it so they had to crunch their story into a more linear type of thing instead.

    They still could have at least explained it in the end. In black ops one there was an big explanation for why mason still thought that Reznov was still alive and was doing crazy stuff which made it good, it gave the game a good sense of understanding towards the end, but in this Cod there was no explanation for anything, only in the loading screens which no one really noticed. It left everyone baffled; that was the problem. It was a nice campaign idea but it was poorly executed in my opinion

      That's probably the most ignorant comment I've heard today. So you're basically telling me that a story can only be good if it's only telling the viewer what's happening instead of testing their minds and figuring it out by themselves. So technically, you want all storytelling games to act like kids games because they don't test the ability to problem solve. Somebody hasn't played nor watched any masterful stories that tests the patience of people.

    • @qu1v3r
      @qu1v3r 6 лет назад +2

      MuddaAsian I mean it was just my opinion. I just really was confused on where the story even ties with any past games, except it mentioned a past villian, and I think it also mentions Nova 6 and even shows it in the game from what I remembered. (It’s been forever since I last played the campaign, but I will admit it was a lot of fun.) I did although think it was interesting showing how the character you play as goes through surgery to get his robotic body after a robot tearing the fuck out of him, and that psychological warfare was introduced in the game and how it was used. I’m not saying I hate the campaign for Black Ops 3, but in some places it really left me confused.

  • @RoCKbOy245
    @RoCKbOy245 3 года назад +22

    When I think of Black Ops, I didn't think about the action scenes, the characters, and what most COD fans think. I always thought of how the series pushes itself into the idea of how the game plays the player instead of how the player plays the game in terms of twists and deep thinking.
    BO1 gives off a good plot twist as the story progresses, BO2 lets you choose a path in every decision you take which results to different endings, and BO3 lets you dig deeper in its plot to get the idea of what the story is all about.
    BO3 may not have its connections with BO1 or BO2, but the plot and characters are a welcome addition to the Black Ops series. Especially how these characters met their fates as the story progresses. The idea of how technology, though it makes life easier, can toy with us with every complication it has.

    • @jagerfromgsg945
      @jagerfromgsg945 9 месяцев назад +4

      Exactly this. I feel like every other cod game campaign is really straight forward and in your face. BO3 requires more thinking and putting the pieces together. Understanding the meaning with technology being a big help, but also a part of the downfall of things was a super cool idea.

      Look at Batman v Superman: The critic consensus was that the movie was bad (and it was), but fans loved it anyway.

      It's still waaaaay too obtuse. Fucking scroll text dialogue? Why not try something different, like typos in parts of the game, mismatched parts of the world, stuff that doesnt even make any sense in the context of said world. Stuff that would draw your attention. Say, an unusually bright light in a part of the level geometry. Like a crack. And, when you look through it, you see...an operating room. That would make for the first clue on what the hell is going on. Then, you start seeing typos in the mission descriptions. Put them together, and you get a word. In this example, they would spell out "FRAUD & FEAR". It seems random. But, think about what BO3 is about. You're not really living. That's fraud. In the context of the world being a lie. Fear. You're scared. You're seeing things that are, quite frankly, impossible. And, tie it in to the frozen forest being a metaphor for the final layer of hell. Fraud. The place that the DNI is making those who pass on, have to endure. To test their willpower. They're liars, cheats, men and women who are being lied to, and are lying to themselves and everyone around. The frozen forest could be a visual metaphor for the cold grip of the grave. Perhaps a form of purgatory. But, have it not be told to us. Use imagery. For example, I'd hide a verse from dante's inferno. Kids dont really know that kind of stuff. But, it's a clue. Another would be hidden medical equipment, in places where frankly, it shouldnt be. Another clue. Tie the story into things that are both semi-logical, but also unusual. Hell, hide some pieces in the fucking loadout menu! Its not like that's something youd expect to find a secret to the story in! And, it would add to the mindfuckery!

    I think the most glaring question about this game will always be why didn’t they just add on to the story of BO2 or BO1?? That’s probably why the majority didn’t give the campaign a chance (including myself) because it ended up being not what most were expecting. There are so many directions they could have went with the Black Ops story, maybe a prequel of how Mason got to meet Woods, Bowman, & Hudson kinda like what CoD4 did with Soap or they could have even continued the story with David Mason in the future which would’ve been really relevant to the futuristic theme of this game

    • @jagerfromgsg945
      @jagerfromgsg945 9 месяцев назад +1

      I really wish they made the campaign more in line with one of the first teasers the game had. It was super cool it was all about how technology would be the downfall and how it had evolved to such a point that they were putting chips in soldiers heads and doing voluntary limb replacement and stuff. It kinda alluded to it but if they just made a campaign with a story that went along with that it would have been great imo.

    tl;dr - The story may be great underneath everything, but it is still too convoluted for the type of game that CoD is.
    I understand that the BO3 story is much better than it appears on the surface, but part of what makes a great story is how well it is understood by the audience and how well it fits its medium.
    Even now that I've watched this video and went to your references that you provided, I still feel like this story is far too convoluted. The player shouldn't have to do tons of research after completing a game to understand what the hell they just played.
    I would also like to mention that this story fits very poorly with the style of the game. In a game like CoD, the player is constantly in a sort of dazed state due to the copious amount of fast-paced action going on. Perhaps if this were the story of a much slower-paced game, then it wouldn't appear to be so convoluted and hard to understand.
    But even with the difference of opinion, your video has certainly cleared up more than a few question I still had about the story, and was entertaining to listen to. Great video Ethos.

      @@british35Looking back now, it wasn’t really a Cold War since it was between the CDP and Winslow Accord. Like USSR vs USA.
      The Egypt vs Ethiopia happened because the Nile River Coalition (Ethiopia is the leader) constructed dams across the Nile River and it lead to a drop in river flows in Egypt.
      Unsurprisingly and rightfully, this pissed off the Egyptians and the Egyptian Government which declared war only to fall after the NRC was supplied by the CDP. Essentially the CDP made this a proxy war where they were winning as the NRC invaded Egypt with equipment given to them by the CDP.
      In comedic terms, the CDP basically injected the NRC with a large chunk of coke and made the NRC batshit crazy from not only stopping Egypt from destroying the dams, but by also invading the country. A very clear act of aggression. The purpose of the invasion is likely to forcefully assimilate Egypt into the coalition as said by their general in his speech in “Lotus Towers” and said “Anyone who seeks assisting the Egyptian Army will be put down! This is your chance. Join us! And fight for your future!”

    I played this campaign and it was good in plot twists and stuff, but it doesn't truly deserve to be called Black Ops III. I loved black ops 1 and 2 for great character stories and for being badass, but in this game there is very little to no character development... Hell, even the character you play as is called PLAYER. Like what the fuck was Treyarch thinking? There was also only 2 direct links to previous black ops, talking about Menendez on Nova 6 briefly. I also really wanted to see if Reznov actually lived because there was evidence that he didn't die in Vorkuta: There was a quote that there was no body found, you actually didn't see him die only pulled over in the truck, and Reznov apparently sent letters to Hudson (under alias John Trent) and in 1968 Febuary 27 a message from John Trent told Hudson to tell mason that "This time it's freedom for both of us". So, in all it was a good game, but it should not be a black ops and they really should have gave us a brief scene with Reznov and Woods and Mason.

    COD is an interesting game series because it is able to take more diverse genres of games, like tactical shooters, puzzle games, etc, take aspects from them, and make them palatable for a general audience that otherwise might have never been exposed to those games before. MW2019 likely caused a rise in popularity among tactical shooters, and Black Ops managed to make RPG dialogue options and branching story paths interesting and streamlined in a way that I actually liked them. BO3 though... while maybe a fun mystery for people who play ARGs often, 99% of players will miss the underlying story because it wasn't made accessible to them. Additionally it also isn't connected to the first two games in any way, leading to a little bit extra added frustration.

    I only finally played through this game a year ago and as an entire package it's pretty damn good game(although it's way overpriced considering it's age even when on sale) while it may not be my favorite call of duty campaign I can definitely say it's by far one of the most interesting concepts for a story I've ever experienced. Yes it does get very convoluted and let's be real the combat is an absolute ballbuster when you're playing on harder difficulties but I really got to give credit to treyarch for writing a very unique story. Obviously the multiplayer kicks ass and the zombies is by far the highlight of this game but you got to give some credit where credit is due. The story from the campaign is reminiscent of Philip K Dicks novel Ubik and the fact that it makes me think that is very impressive.

    The way I understand it, the last mission where Hendricks holds Krueger hostage actually happened, after the main player died. The players death was at Krueger hand, he cut off life support since we werent as good as he wanted. That, mixed with Hendricks losing Taylor after they finished the stone hunt-down and Taylor agreed to augment, he was pissed. He spent the whole mission against stones team expressing sympathy, and everyone else dying or converting drove him over the edge so Hendricks went after Krueger to finish the job that Stone set out on. NOW. Corvus was real as well, and was a feature now included in the DNI that went into the Player’s head. When Taylor linked with us, Corvus made the jump into his. Corvus was made to catalog the User’s memories and we came over with Corvus, that’s why we started seeing Taylor’s memories. Corvus also wanted to still make that peaceful afterlife, which is why we were seeing Taylor’s memories as our own. Corvus was keeping us around, but was still looking for the frozen forest. Every memory Corvus was seeing though, from black ops personnel, was death and destruction though so it was becoming distraught. Back to it though, when the DNI is purged after we kill Hendricks and shoot ourselves, and then IDing as Taylor, is because we were experiencing Hendricks trying to finish Stones mission as it happened. Since Corvus was holding onto us in Taylor’s mind, when the DNI purged, it deleted both Corvus and the Player, Hence how we become Taylor at the end.

    Black Ops 3 is my favourite CoD campaign along with Modern Warfare and the original Black Ops. The story is just sublime and thought-provoking like something out of Deus Ex or Blade Runner. Treyarch has managed to create a compelling side story in the Black Ops universe without relying on any of its already established characters. Hell, even the multiplayer has its own narrative.

      +Zachary Battles Corvus never existed to begin with. The entire rogue Artificial Intelligence plot line was something your character's dying mind dreamed up as it slowly shut down and stopped thinking rationally, much like how the WWII segment inexplicably ended with zombies on account of what's her name no longer thinking rationally due to her brain breaking down as she died.

      GlitchyShadow That would've been good, but when 11 out of the 12 missions relies on the plot twist, it is practically impossible to clear up events without giving it away. That's why they drop massive, obvious hints at the last mission. Seeing Taylor in the mirror and hearing the player calling himself Taylor should make anyone suspect that things may not be as they seem. The path they chose is inherently hardcore and anti-casual, which is a ballsy move on Treyarch's part

I rarely play the same game multiple times, but I've already had about 10 playthroughs at different difficulties, coop and single. For me personally it's a lot of reruns. :) I simply happy this game came out.
