  • Ya'll really thought I was gonna throw "Losing Devil May Cry" at you? I like my head where it is. Up my rectal cavity.
So after the brilliant DMC3, capcom made DMC4, the reboot, and DMC5. The first two were intended to increase the depth of the franchise - expand its horizons, you know? Both tripped up in one way or another, which is a shame because they're both fun and playable.
Either way, DMC5 with its insane combos, incredible animations, etc., etc., saved devil may cry. And it may be the last of the series as we know it.
Thanks to GaMetal for the gyro blade music: / jonnyatma
OH for anyone looking for a different perspective on the reboot, check out • DmC: Devil May Cry - V... by Atmos Fabula & Foxcade.
Thanks for sticking around. We're still growing and I expect some backlash over DmC, but I'd rather be honest than hang my head and pretend I like stuff lol. I appreciate the views a lot either way!

Do you know why Dante can continue being super cool and it not getting old after 3?
Cuz now he's the cool side character that nobody can measure up to and the protagonist cant help but look up to.
Nero is a perfect addition in both story and gameplay that way.
Also as stated by everybody, the exceed is like the funnest mechanic ever.

      @damsen978 4 года назад +3

Noy really, as a matter of fact all you do while playing as Nero is think how well can you time your left trigger, that's what you're thinking mid-combo, because combos are muscle memory, you don't have to think about them once you practiced enough. But with Dante and Vergil? You got differing weapons, and each weapon has it's move-set, so you're thinking on what move to do next, the combos are never the same if you don't like using the same moves over and over, there's a lot more variance to it and that's the problem with Nero, he needs to obtain new devil arms.

i didnt like the exceed mechanic at all, and I'd like to know how you guys used it as I don't get it. You'd spend half an hour just charging it up only to get 3 or so extra damage attacks. How is that fun? What did I do wrong?

In the defense of Nero, Devil May Cry isn't really all that accessible and that is what Nero was designed around. Nero has one weapon, one gun, a way to instantly be right up on the enemy (either by pulling them or yourself) and a way to lay on some massive damage. Nero was designed for newcomers while given enough complexity that allows high level players to mess around with.
Keep in mind, I am talking about DMC4 Nero right now. He is able to rev his sword with the ex-ceed ability, his DT cancels animations (get knocked back and start DT to instantly stop knockback or do the "split" downward strike and activate DT to cancel the landing and pop the enemy into the air), his fully charged Blue Rose shot does an insane amount of damage after a timer, his buster animation (on most enemies) are different depending on if activated in DT, bosses have different buster animations depending on where they were grabbed, Blue Rose shots have summon swords in DT that cancel knockback on enemies and more. Nero is arguably just as complex as Dante.
DMC5 Nero is insane as he returns with everything (only main difference is that his DT doesn't cancel out every animation like it does in 4. However "Break Away" does have that feature where you can press it to instantly cancel any animation, arguably with less effectiveness as it sends enemies away from you and not popping them above you.) Nero returns but with more Red Queen moves, more Blue Rose moves, more forgiving Ex-ceed times, and a bunch of Devil Breaker mechanical arms.
I hope I gave some insight as to why some people would play Nero over Dante. Nero is a beginner character while having enough to not be a waste of time for pros.

      @@MagikarpPower a couple things.
1: I'd argue you won't be able to play DMC4 Dante half as effectively on your first playthrough just like Nero. Not exactly too relevant, but saying it's not exclusive to Nero.
2: Devil May Cry games are designed and built around multiple playthroughs. I will not argue that only doing one playthrough is "playing the game wrong" but doing so would be a disservice in my opinion. It is important to understand that for the average DMC game, beating the first playthrough is just the beginning.

I feel like almost all characters in DMC5 are goofy, just varying levels of it. Nero's punk goofy but can't go full goofy because he's held back by his admittedly deserved angst. V is goth goofy, he doesn't show it much but when he does theatrics like quoting poetry to style on demons and play an air violin in the middle of battle you can tell its there, he also plays a wonderful straight man to Griffon. Dante is of course Dante, no explanation needed there. Nico is so goofy she forces Nero "I make the worst jokes at demon corpses" to play the straight man. YouKnowWho is also goofy but tries his damnedest to hide it. All in all this game really does get the heart of DMC.

It's not a great mechanic. It's a very one dimensional linear mechanic. Either hit it or don't. All it does is lock things away by execution and it's not even interesting things. His arm is far more interesting than any exceed mechanic.

    • @bigbrowski410
      @bigbrowski410 5 лет назад +53

It is one dimensional and linear and has that hit it or don’t factor but that only works in the mechanics favor. Hitting exceed becomes an important rotation of combat which can easily lead to you getting hits you otherwise wouldn’t worry about as Dante or V especially. Obviously Dante has overall greater depth in terms of moveset or mechanics but that depth often goes wasted unless you’re a combo monster like donguri. Nero has less depth but what depth he has is a lot more necessary to succeed than Dante.

    • @Yorcont

@@bigbrowski410 Once you've got practice in and gotten comfortable with it, it becomes second nature. But the reward for mastering it is can be seen in his super costume. The reward for mastering style switching can only be seen through combo videos.
I'm sick of people hand waving how deep Dante is by saying that it only belongs to the top 1%. It doesn't make him any less complex nor is it even true that to get value you have to be donguri. The biggest hurdle to Dante is the feel of the controller in your hand. Once you've gotten past that you can easily utilize his moveset to tackle any challenge the game throws at you. If you want to make combo videos, you need to put in more work but to just beat the game even on the highest difficulty, you don't need to be Donguri.
But sure you can make the argument that the depth Nero has is more essential because that is obviously how it usually works. If you only had one weapon of course it's going to be more essential because you don't really have a choice in the matter. You wanna see a rare character with more depth but just as essential? Look at DMC3 Dante, 5 melee weapons 6 styles. But the limitation on what he could carry made you squeeze out everything your weapon could do.

  • @dmcguy5707
    @dmcguy5707 5 лет назад +404

Think you really undersold what Nero is really capable of with his exceed mechanic.
    Edit:
I'm just gonna throw this in here for people who don't know, but when I mean "exceed mechanic", I mean more than repeated presses of the rev button to buff ONE of Nero's attacks. The game doesn't really explain this very well but basically if you press the rev button after an attack ends you get an instant charge and theoretically every single one of his attacks can be buffed for ludicrous amounts of damage by the right player. (Also additional rotations on streak and high roller are never not cool.)
For the casual player that's enough to please the depth never thought to be there in the first place. But even without his exceed mechanic there's still plenty of depth hidden beneath this character, most obvious being his devil breakers. I won't deny that certain breakers are one offs and are completely worthless as combo tools, i.e rawhide and helter skelter. However his other arms such as ragtime, punchline, and gerbera breath fresh life into this character's move set. Combine this in conjunction with his calibur, new move payline, shuffle canceling, devil trigger, D.T canceling, break away canceling, devil bringer enemy holding, devil bringer boss buster moves ,devil bringer boss counters, summoning swords and the original DMC 4 charge shots, you can do crazy stylish set ups with his D.T specific moves showdown and maximum bet.
TD:LR No one is saying that Nero is more complex than Dante, and the complexity and skill gap is still far apart even if it is closer in 5 than it was in 4. As a Dante player, don't sleep on a character until you at least realize the potential of the new blood or to at least go out of your way to see some slick Nero combo videos (ex. chasertech).

@Максим Г. Having a central character as the focus of a game franchise isn't a hindrance if you innovate around the character. They could easily have based a lot of new gameplay mechanics around Dante, but opted to introduce Nero instead. There's nothing wrong with introducing new playable characters with differing mechanics, but the big problem with DMC, as KBash said, is how ham-fistedly they did it in 4. Playing as Nero for a huge chunk of the beginning feels like a bait-and-switch for people who play the games for Dante, and the transition from Nero to Dante is poorly handled and makes it feel like a retread of what you've already done because it's the same levels and bosses. Getting to play as the central protagonist of the entire franchise up to this point shouldn't feel like an unlockable. I always felt that the Nero sections were like the game on beginner, which might sound like good game design, but the problem is they do nothing to really prepare you for how Dante plays.
As for Sonic... do you really feel like Shadow, Rouge, Mighty, Charmy, Silver, or Big the Cat added ANYTHING to the Sonic franchise that couldn't have been accomplished with already established characters? They want Sonic-only because that entire franchise has become way too bogged down in its own bullshit.

Sure, in 4 he was limited and had that *not Dante* complex but in 5 he feels like he's grown into his own person and his gameplay evolved accordingly, adding variety where it was needed. It's super fun to break the devil breakers. You really need to give him a chance and not be just "uhhh me like Dante just Dante". I used to be like that but then Nero grew on me.

IMO the only other thing they could add to Nero at this stage (especially after the ending, won't spoil it but it pretty much completes the character) is the ability freely swap devil breakers without breaking them. This would cover additional D-pad inputs and at this point the controls for Nero would be as bloated as they are for post-4 Dante. The only way I could see additional weapons for Nero work is if there was only one ranged and melee weapon selectable at the start of the missions, otherwise it would be a clusterfuck. Remember that Red Queen moveset is like twice as extensive as the Dante's most complicated weapons. I could understand creating additional weapons for him in a similar fashion but a straight out Dante-sque weapon swap won't work

The closest to a variety of styles Nero has ever come to is his Devil Breakers but unless you really experiment with those(Most people don't even bother), you won't even rack up Stylish points effectively. So Nero is much more of a multitasker than Dante because Dante is more of go from one-to-the-other, whereas everything Nero has to offer is for the most part at the forefront of his character, and he's a really heavy hitter so long as you use him right. both Dante and Vergil are anti-heros because Vergil controls the underworld and Dante controls a person or demons fate in the human world depending on how much he's getting paid and Nero is an awfully generous character he offered his dad just walking towards him with malicious intent something to eat because he cared about everyone not having enough food in their lives or maybe none at all he doesn't want to people around him and who follow him to feel as lonely and invisible to others as he did as an orphan and that is why Nero is Sparda's humanity.

Its not like they added Dante completely the same in every game. Also pretty sure reason why people want them around so much is because of how they are in the story. And from the gameplay shorts before this games release people were READY for this game because of Dante and the motorcycle then returning weapons like Cerberus.

@@UnifiedEntity Okay, i got off topic. I should change that to my original point, the only people that complained about Nero are people that don't appreciate the difference. Also maybe people who don't like a character unless they're either super jokey or "movie dramatic". But Character Action is a niche genre, Dante's changes aren't appreciated by the general audience, all those people that play it like a button mashing hack and slash, which is why they needed a new character to go with new gameplay. Again, the series was on it's way out the door. It wasn't showing the growth Capcom wanted. For better or worse Nero got people talking about the game. If he wasn't there the consensus for DMC4 by general media would've been "more of the same with a couple of changes" and it wouldn't have sold as much. Even staying consistent wasn't good enough for Capcom, it's why they rebooted it.

@@Ultimaniacx4 When was Devil May cry going out the door after prior to DMC 3? Cause last I checked that was a huge success for Capcom. Nero's first game, didnt really reinvigorate any substantial growth cap com wanted as you said. Nero didnt do it. Which is why we got that damn Reboot. Only thing DMC4 did that helped was bringing in more more Surrounding Vergil and setting up DMC5 to take it from there while fixing it mistakes.

I played DMC4 in an MWR in Iraq and thought it was okay. Back then there was less content and characters. I laughed when a website gave it a “padded bra” award for its backtracking.

    Meh, to DMC4:
Nero - easy to learn, hard to master (you know what exceed is, right?)
Dante - hard to learn, fingers break while mastering it.
Nero is especially all about timing. If you are good you can deal more damage in less time than Dante, but he is less agile than Dante, so you need to know what you're doing. No trickster to save your ass and you need to commit to your attacks. Nero is slower, more clumsy and leaves more room open to be hit than Dante (for instance if you miss your max-ex-streak there are at least 3 seconds where you can be hit without really doing something against it).
    That said..
Oh boy. Sure it is no dante, but knowing what your devil arm can do.. Right timing and DT active you can just counter charge attacks from bosses, which you think it wouldn't work.
Knowing which animation will be triggered with which enemy is needed because you can use some enemies as projectiles..
Charchigen Blue Rose, using DT, stunning the enemy, so you can easily combo.
What I'm trying to say is: sure Nero has fewer moves than Dante, but you can really combo the shit out of this moveset and make maximum damage, but that requires skill and knowledge of the game...
p.s it is really neat so see the skill of Dante and Nero in gameplay terms. As fighter Nero makes a lot of mistakes and loses his balances very often. Dante on other hand... Dante dances...

Sorry dude but your hate on Nero is just annoying we get that you like Dante but it seems like you don’t give a shit about the other characters who are cool and interesting in their own way I mean V is honestly one of my favorite characters in the series. It seems to me that you don’t like the other characters because you don’t know how to use them properly. I love Dante but his time as the face of the series has come and gone and honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if in dmc 7 he’s not a playable character seeing as how Nero is the new face of the series and rightfully so. Nero is his own character who’s gone through major character development unlike Dante who hasn’t had any since 3. Plus how are you gonna say Nero has just two weapons he has multiple different devil breakers which in total give him more weapons than Dante. I mean dood did you use EX ACT or Blue rose, or his devil trigger moves like Showdown or Maximum Bet. He may not be as in depth as Dante but he’s definitely a lot closer. I usually like your vids but this one was admittedly frustrating to watch. I don’t mean this message as a sign of hate just my take on the video.

God forbid he has an opinion on a character. They don't fit his play style, thats what it seems to look like. And Dante hasn't had a change in character since 3? Um did you play DMC5? And he was shafted in 4, what in the hell could they do in a unfinished game to give him development and then a reboot that completely did his character different? "His own character" my friend, Nero with his attitude and smug comments was a dollar store ripoff of DMC 3 Dante. Only change is he was more of a crybaby hothead.

RaginDXDemon it just seems to me that he didn’t actually put in the time to learn Nero or any of his different systems. Like I said above he’s fine to have his own opinion. And if anyone had the most character development in 5 it was Vergil. In 4 Nero was admittedly a lot like dmc 3 Dante however Nero’s motive in 4 is different and he isn’t an asshole to everyone like dmc 3 Dante was. I feel like 5 had fleshed his personality a lot more in this regard as he’s more mature due to his partner being a goofball causing him to be more serious than he was in 4. Like I said he’s fine to like whatever character wants my only problem is when he claims something and doesn’t take the effort to actually learn about it

I think you're misunderstanding what "the end of the sons of Sparta" means. It doesn't mean that Dante is going away it just means that the Dante vs Vergil story is over. At the end of the game the two brother seem to be a "peace" and working together, gotten over their pass.

I feel like this might need a retake after you make an effort to get a firm handle on V, and Nero. I don't expect you to like them, but don't cut them short because of your biases for Dante. Might also wanna clip out that end part. Because they did. They did a fantastic job.

*1:* you can remap the buttons in 5 so that you don't have the problems of handcramps when playing other characters like V. *2:* DMC 4 was cut short in the developement time and originally dante wasn't supposed to be playable. atleast not at the halfway point. maybe as postgame content like with Trish in DMC2. *3:* what Nero lacks in devil arm variety and style switching he more than makes up for in the devil breakers and it kinda sounds like you weren't utilizing those enough. not to mention Nero as a character is just as interesting and fun loving as dante, his initial game just gave a bad first impression.

i sort of expect him to stay as a mentor character and maybe be treated as an extra playable character with a less focused story, like vergil in 4SE. i doubt theyll ever 100% get rid of dante, dude's too iconic, and they realized that mistake with DmC especially

If they can find a way to fit all of Nero's new moves onto one control scheme then there's no reason to keep him as the main "beginner" character.
Separate campaigns. All selectable at all times.

I gotta agree with the rest. No Nero isn't as good as Dante but you're really missing a large chunk of how he operates without exceed and the occasional color up. V is some bullshit though, the way he commands shadow is lousy, and getting triple S is far too easy, as if capcom is compensating for a half baked character

"Waaah Nero is bad because he doesnt have 30 different weapons and 12 different styles and doesn't subsist off pizza and poooooverty his arm is cool tho give Dante the cool arm"
"Waaah V is bad because he doesnt dooooooo anything eeeeever and he only has 2 duuuudes and I wanna drink piiiiizza"
"Dante's the beeeeest since he inhales pizza and doesnt afraid of anything look at all these weapons I can fill with pizza now"
It's almost as if Nero is a character focused more on capitalizing on the rhythm of combat, with counters built directly into his play style that, when combined with exceed, help extend his limited move-set to make up for the lack of variety in 4, with that variety nullified in 5 with devil breakers.
It's almost like V's gameplay was inspired by fighting game meter management, so if combat is slow it's directly a result of the player not understanding they're not supposed to be hoarding their purple bars.
