We're actually covering something thematically relevant for the season! Remember last Halloween? Age of Empires? Jeeez.
So, my Dead Space series retrospective. Dead Space is a pretty cool 3rd person shooter built for horror, but it tends to do better with action. I think it's scary enough for the average player, but it only takes one cutscene compilation post-Dead Space 1 to see where they were going with it. Mind you, ALL the games are fun and playable. 1 is closest to its cinematic horror roots, 2's just a blast, and 3's a bit unfortunate. Still, glad I got the chance to play 'em all through.

"Space gun" games do pretty poorly on the show, but I've also covered Halo: • Crying About the Halo ...

Honestly my one issue with the game is how pointless all the other weapons are. There is utterly no reason not to use anything other than the plasma cutter. Sometimes other weapons are slightly more useful for certain enemies, especially in 2, but only slightly. Like the toddlers and the assault riffle. But you can still kill em easily enough with the plasma cutter. And in the first game there's nothing like that. I think its a weakness in design.

    • @nestormelendez9005
      @nestormelendez9005 3 года назад +12

You gotta experiment with the weapons to understand their uses all the original weapons in the second game were changed and improved
Plasma cutter is very understandable as a all in one tool
Line gun amazing for taking out two slashers/pukers in one shot to the head and arms and the alternate is great for killing the wall guardians
Edit: I forgot this one but even an achievement/trophy shows you another use that involves shooting all three lurkers tentacles off in a single shot
Pulse rifle like you said very useful for the pack and exploders and its great for beheading them and it functions just like the plasma cutter can be an all in one tool with no leading delay shot accuracy
Force gun great for basic crowd control especially against leapers and they can be finished off with the alternative shot when knocked back and a very good extra use is to clear a group of swarm
Flamethrower Is there for double damage opportunity, you incinerate an enemy and while its taking fire damage switch to another weapon for extra damage works mostly with stalkers , brutes, dividers
The ripper is a tough one but I just use its alternate shot to cripple far enemies to slow them down
Seeker rifle is usefull for precision shots clearly , aiming for the glowing parts on enemies, brutes, exploders, nests, tripods and if you're up for it it can one shot most enemies when upgraded
Detonater can only really be useful for stalker situations but otherwise i wouldn't use it for anything else
Contact beam works best for tank enemies, dividers, brutes, and the ubermorph and the alternate shot with build in stasis helps in moving around the room for a second to breath
Javelin gun is hard to figure which purpose its for
Rivet gun im not sure since I never pre order the game but I've heard it's a terrible weapons that runs out of ammo very quickly
      Them there's the hand cannon

I really hated the universal ammo and customized weapons aspect of DS3. I get that Isaac's an engineer, blah blah blah. But for me, I very quickly and easily got an overpowered gun. Combine that with many of the newer enemies not having the strategic delimbing being very important, the combat became a lot less interesting to me as all I needed to was aim my gun in the general vicinity of an enemy and hold the trigger down. Good thing you skipped the subsequent side missions, cause from my experience, the first one is the only interesting one. Once you get down to the planet, they all seem to be copy & paste with very little in the way of interesting story elements. I also don't think the coop helps with any horror experience the game might still be trying to hold onto.

      @shinigami9851 Год назад

Yeah i feel the same. Unfortunately when people think of horror they think of struggling for your life barely scraping by not turning your enemies to chunks with powerful weapons. Theres a reason alot of indie devs and AAA devs try to go for survival than action. Luckily its slowly changing…REALLY slowly actually. Re8 and callisto protocol come to mind. It’s unfortunate most people don’t consider action horror games as actual horror games and pulling the excuse “its not a horror game if its not making you feel helpless just make it an action game.”

The weapon crafting of 3 had so much depth and genuinely interesting combinations to futz around with. It had no place in a horror game though (even action horror) due to the reliance on universal ammo, and saddling it to the resource mining robots that were tied to microtransactions certainly didn't help.
In a vacuum I loved it, and I did get a lot more mileage out of the game on repeat playthroughs by just messing around with all the options at your disposal, but it needed to be in a game like Sunset Overdrive where spectacle is a bit more important than mood.

2:50 that's a port issue because I got the exact same problem, except sometimes the gun wouldn't fire at all until I reloaded the save or fuckin' died.

At least the franchise seems to be getting a 2nd chance, so that's nice.

Honestly, I really enjoyed the settings of Dead Space 3, until they got to the alien city. The ruined fleet and the abandoned military base on the planet felt really cool to me. When the game started focusing on alien stuff though, it dropped the ball. Hard. I wish the game had been better overall.

Great video! Dead Space is one of my favorite games ever. I actually delved into most of the extended universe when it was still relevant. The Wii game, Extraction, is better than it has any right to be. Seriously, a light gun spinoff that captures the same feel as the main entries is just insane. Highly recommend it. The DLC for Dead Space 2 caps off the story of extraction. It’s not bad, but I wouldn’t bother if you haven’t played the Wii game. The DLC for 3 from what I remember was pretty good. It brought back a lot of the scares for a couple hours and is regarded as what the main game should have been. I also got the Dead Space 2 puzzle prequel for preordering the game from GameStop (PoWeR tO tHe PlAyErS!). It’s a short, easy puzzle game with fuck ugly art and contributes very little to the overall story. Don’t bother.
The novel, Dead Space: Martyr is another case of something being better than it has any right to be. The author must have been a fan or at least done their homework because it’s a faithful and spooky prequel to the first game. The second novel, Catalyst, I found very boring. The first half is a political thriller if you can believe that. Not a very good one either. The second half just meanders around “psychological horror” but it’s very boring.
The comics have some nice art work, but are ultimately pretty boring. They throw them in as a bonus on the Wii game and I believe they’re fully voice acted. Can’t remember if it was any good or not. They’re also probably on RUclips for free.
I never watched the animations. I saw some clips here and there on RUclips and it seemed ok enough, but all the movies were critically panned, so I never bothered.
Tldr: play Extraction, Dead Space 3’s DLC, and read Dead Space: Martyr.

I pets wouldn’t compare Dead Space to RE4 but still good video. My favorite part of Dead Space is that you’re not a soldier or cop you’re just a researcher in a cool suit that’s it. I’d compare it more to RE2 when it comes to the horror elements. But nothing else.

I randomly came across your channel a month ago, and as a dead space fan(read the books) I think your analysis is fair. I feel bad for the potential Visceral had with this IP but EA, like always, screwed it up.

My biggest gripe in the series is that you can't experience it fully if you are just a person with a pc. Complete dead space 1, 2, 3, do the dlc for 3, and that's it. No dlcs for 1, no story dlc for 2. Such a fucking shitty choice EA made.

It’s a bad Dead Space game, but a pretty good 3rd person, sci-if shooter. If only they balanced the weapon customization. At least it’s fun to make over powered weapons, but it makes every encounter a joke.

Awwwwww this brings back memories, grew up with the first 2 games. Yes when everyone else was out hanging out I was in my room with the lights off playing bioshock, dead space, elder scrolls, mass effect, and resident evil 4. Serious what ea is doing, dont get why they haven't released a port for the switch. Wake up EA, Im literally asking you to take my money, you know just not in that under handed having to pay for multiplayer way.

Never really cared for Dead space but i'd argue in terms of writing a character caring for their loved one; it doesn't matter if you or another player cares it's more if the character cares and their motivations involve protecting or saving them.
I've always disliked the argument of "well I dont like the character the protagonist loves-" It shouldn't matter, you're playing the character's story not the players story.
Idk always made sense to me, I dont think cloud and tifa have much chemistry at all, he's stoic and boring and doesn't really interact with that side of her until super later (and dont get me started on the movie where he disappears and she's still all over him despite him not wanting anything to do with love.) but what matters is tifa wants to try working this out and maybe cloud wants to as well.
Idk it's one of those things that never made sense to me but a interesting topic to broach as well.

I believe a story works best when it's able to make the reader feel invested, especially in a video game, where you literally wear the character's shoes. If the narrative only establishes Isaac's relationship with his girlfriend without developing it, you as the player don't have a good enough reason story-wise to want to rescue her.
Does it matter, in the case of Dead Space? Not really, the gameplay and atmosphere are good enough to make you want to see it through to the end. But if the game managed to make me care about saving the girl, the story could be much more impactful.
