    I don't usually do shooters, but Halo's a masterpiece. It's the game that everyone played other than Smash, whaddya gonna do?
    Bungie put this ridiculous amount of love into these games and it shows. Follow me as I detail the rise of the Halo trilogy. Also sorry for luxuriating in pathos this time, it just felt appropriate, you know?

      I don't know why people are being so hard on Reach lately. Yeah it had sprint and armor lock along with some weapon redundancy issues and not the best voice acting, but its campaign was awesomely designed, the story was moving, the Spartan customization was addicting and aesthetically tight, Forge and Firefight were perfected, and the multiplayer was the most expansive and satisfying at the time. I'd say its successes far outshine its missteps and it's hard to blame them for trying new things. I put more hours into Reach than the previous 2 games combined, and I played those pretty religiously.

While in terms of FPS, Halo's world is actually on the forgiving end for anyone who isn't the main character, it's still a rough ride for even elite marines.

      This 100% I feel like most people’s favorite Halo just depends where they are in life at the time. Halo 2 and 3 came out during my high school and college years and I spent thousands of hours playing both with my closest friends. Regardless of how good the other Halo games are, it would be nearly impossible for them to match the fun and hype of 2 and 3 because we just don’t have the time to play together anymore. We’re all in our mid 30s with careers and families of our own now, spread out in different states and even different countries for some. It takes months worth of coordinating schedules for a some of us to get together now for a few hours much less be able to put hundreds or thousands of hours into Halo.

    Back then, all I had was a Dreamcast with few games like Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, GTA 2 ,RE Code Veronica and.... that's about it. I loved these games. Especially Sonic Adventure. But I didn't find myself playing my games that much.
    And I only fired up my Dreamcast when I felt like there's really nothing to do. Because I wasn't interested in playing video games at all.
    After getting the OG Xbox with Halo of course. Suddenly, I was glued to this game and played it for hours. Everyday non stop. It got to the point where I finished the Campaign on legendary twice. And I had so much fun playing with my friends and bros on LAN parties.
    I was then blown away by how amazing video games are. After that, I started buying a countless number of games for my OG Xbox. To the point where I got interested into buying a PS2.
    And that's how my journey with gaming started. Thanks to Halo.

  • @Comkill117
    @Comkill117 10 месяцев назад

    One thing I think 3 doesn’t get enough credit for is just how much it’s campaign’s gameplay really went all out on making you feel more powerful. The first level for example ends with fighting an enemy adjacency to the final boss of 2, only when you kill him that Gravity Hammer is yours, and every mission sees you using the big guns consistently. In CE and 2 missions were fairly reserved and power weapons like the rocket launcher felt like a big deal, but in 3 the game understood just how fun having them was in combination with the other mechanics and physics so multiple levels could feature you in a warthog full of marines armed with fuel Rod guns just absolutely tearing the level up. Super fun, you love to see it.

  • @zoidsfan12
    @zoidsfan12 4 года назад

    It honestly warms my heart seeing a bunch of people talk about halo recently. I have been working through the CE campaign for the first time and rekindling my love I had for this series. While reach still means a lot to me because I spent the most time playing it, that original series is downright groundbreaking even to this day. While the multiplayer of halo feels boring today compared to all the advancements we have had in game design, the campaigns still hold up really fucking well. It's nutty to think that halo CE has more complex and nuanced AI than modern games, a game nearly 2 decades old and it was thought out that well. Just as a whole, from gameplay, music, and story, the halo games were on another level.
    Honestly I don't think we will ever see another zeitgeist like Halo. In this day and age we get distracted way to quick to all turn our heads to something like Halo. Back in '07-'11 halo was big enough that if you weren't playing it you heard of it. Literally my first time using our first computer was me going to RUclips and happening to see Halo videos on the homepage. I even remember the title, it was "Halo 3 Tricks Episode 70 Pinball Wizard" just searched it up, it's 12 years old at this point. That means it has been longer since I first watched that video than how long I was on the planet when I watched it because I would've been 10 at the time. I became a huge halo fan from that RUclips series and I remember even emailing the channel owner and asking if I could join his squad when I got an Xbox for Christmas, he said sure but I never pursued it because I realized later how he recorded and how you had to record videos in general ( at that time it involved jury rigging a camcorder with some av cables to send the image out from the TV to the camcorder, this was years before capture cards caught on). God what a fucking nostalgia bomb bro.

    I loved the transition into the theme. That choir gets me every time.
    But what I never understood is how the choir ended up with all the attention. Steve Vai is doing things to his guitar in that track that would result in his fingers being blurred if viewed in Japan.

  • @PeaceBe123

    So I have this theory that an fps’ fun level is entirely dependent on 3 factors. Not in any order, weapons, options(like literal options. Difficulty, colorblindness, general accessibility), and how the enemies when mixed change everything. Enemies on their own, should have an optimal way to kill. But when mixed and matches should absolutely require adaptability and create emergent gameplay. You should feel like a human calculator with the flow state of taking in all the info and picking your best way forward. And the best games (doom 2 old and new, halo, nightmare reaper to name a few) just adding or removing one enemy type from an encounter changes everything. That’s what makes them truly fun I think.

    I found myself randomly thinking about ODST earlier today, too. We must be on the same wavelength.
    Even if you haven't played it before, listen to the soundtrack of that game! It's the best in the series... as well as the gameplay. Controversial opinion!
    Even though the story is distracting as a big ol' Firefly reunion, it's the moodiness of the Rookie searching the city of New Mombasa on a rainy night for clues of his squad's whereabouts that makes the game.
    Romeo's busted up sniper rifle, the burning headquarters of ONI, Dare's helmet... watching the Rookie put it all together to find out where they went to the tunes of the bluesy soundtrack make this the best, and most down-to-Earth Halo game. At least to me.
    Shame what happens to the Rookie in the novel set after the game's events, though. Real bummer. The game is pretty good, though.

    All the trilogy Halo games are kinda sad to me, not because they're not great but because Bungie never really had enough time to implement everything they wanted to which is insane because they still managed to make a ground breaking and incredibly fun game every time. All the people who worked at Bungie for those all nighters and office sleepovers have to be commended for not just working at a job but making that job their life and pride.

    Watch the IGN "Devs react to speedruns" video for Halo 1. During the library section the devs talk a lot about how it's way too long and boring, and they joke about how the guy who was making that level just never stopped making more level and no one wanted to be the one to tell him to stop.

    I don’t mean to sound negative but I went back and played Halo: CE and for some reason it just felt like it didn’t age extremely well. Possibly because the older I’ve gotten the more “tactical” a player I’ve become. Honestly though it hasn’t made me think anything less of this absolute masterpiece of media, not just video games but all media. Legends may age, but they’ll never die.
