Whatever yoyo you have. Whatever yoyo you have been using to learn your tricks is most likely the best yoyo for performing a talent show. If you are interested in getting a new / better yoyo let me know what tricks you are currently working on, what yoyo you currently have, and how much you are looking to spend. Once I know that I will be able to make a good recommendation for you.
I would recommend the Legacy II yoyo. It is under $25 and it comes with a thin bearing for those who are just getting into string tricks, and a wide bearing for all the most advanced tricks you can do. We have this yoyo on the YoTricks website and I always recommend it for players who are looking for a yoyo that can do everything, but is also good for getting started. I also recommend getting the Legacy 2 Yoyo Pack that has strings and lube. If you live in the U.S. you can get free shipping.
Yes, we highly recommend the Protostar. Most of the time if a yoyo dies when it gets on the string that means that the strings are touching the sides of the yoyo. If you can keep the strings from touching the sides of the yoyo then it will spin much longer.
@georgefaue19 For more advanced tricks the kits make a significant difference. The weight rings that come in the kits make the yoyo sleep longer, and if you decide to silicone the brake pads it will play much more consistently and it will be more responsive. The lube that comes in the advanced kit also keeps the yoyo playing more consistently.
Hey, Creeper. I just ordered my velocity from yotricks and it came in 8 days. I also live in Canada and shipping anywhere there for the velocity is $8.50. This is my first more advanced yoyo (not a cheap $4 one) and I am amazed. I just actually got it, it can sleep very long and got my trapeze on the first try. I got a knot in it and simply took it apart and it was fine. I recommend adding 10-30 polyester string since shipping doesn't change.
It is a combination of metal and plastic which allows all the weight to be better distributed. Most metal/plastic hybrid yoyos cost about the same or more. It id certainly worth the price.
If you are talking about the ONE Unresponsive Kit, I would suggest that (otherwise the ONE is responsive). The ONE Unresponsive Kit will take you further than the Velocity.
If you get any of the Luminator Kits on the site we include the string that we recommend for the yoyo. In general, I prefer the type-6-blend yellow string.
I have not tried the Lizard yoyo myself, but based on other Henry yoyos I have played with, and the shape of the Lizard, it does not seem like it would be a great choice for learning string tricks. It is probably okay to get you started, but if you are thinking of learning more advanced tricks the Lizard will probably hold you back.
Yes, however you will need to unscrew it a little bit to open up the gap. If the gap is all the way closed the yoyo will just bind up when you get it on the string.
Yes, except the Advanced Kit comes with Yellow String, and in the videos I use white string because it is easier to see on the film. In general, however, when the Luminator is setup this way I prefer the yellow string.
@lolplayism Hmmmm... I have not really played with the DM2 so I am not sure what the best option is. For other yoyos sometimes putting them in the freezer can help, others need a small screwdriver to pry the bearing off. YoyoFactory also sells a small tool for removing bearings, not sure if that would work with a YoYoJam yoyo or not.
Unresponsive yoyos are best for string tricks. If you would like to get a yoyo that can play both responsive and unresponsive I suggest you consider the Velocity. It has a dial that allows the yoyo to be set to responsive or unresponsive play. We have it on the YoTricks website if you want to take a look.
I have not tried the magic yoyos, so I cannot say if they would be good or not. Also, the right yoyo for you all depends on how good you are already. Can you already bind?
The Legacy 2 is meant to be a less expensive version of the Dark Magic 2. It is the same shape but the body is all plastic, unlike the Dark Magic 2 that has the metal rims. They play very similar, but the Dark Magic 2 is certainly better.
The Dark Magic 2 and the Legacy 2 are almost identical in terms of shape, the only difference is the Dark Magic 2 has metal rims which distributes the weight differently. This does make it play better. Both are fantastic yoyos, it just depends on what you want to spend. We also have a Dark Magic 2 Players pack, like the one I mentioned for the Legacy 2.
Just a message to say thanks for the video uploads and keep it up you guys offer alot of help for us learners, looking forward to another year of great tricks and tips. Have a great new year
@KableTdi Even though it is counterintuitive, lube makes bearings responsive and spin for less time. If your bearing is clean (or have a very thin lube) it will spin longer and be unresponsive.
Shipping prices to Canada are calculated on the checkout page once you put in your address. Also, we sell the Dark Magic 2 and have a review about it on the page where you can order that yoyo (the YoTricks' Take). In brief, it is a great yoyo and it can play both responsive and unresponsive.
Yes, you can lube an unresponsive yoyo. If you use a thin lube designed for unresponsive yoyos, and do not put in too much lube it will not make it play responsive.
@KableTdi In the binding video we teach you how to wind the yoyo, but if this is your first yoyo it should be easier to learn the more basic wind. Search for our video in youtube: learn how to wind a yoyo and it will tell you what you are looking for. Also, if you lubricate the yoyo bearing it will play responsive making it easier to use (on YoTricks we sell SuperLube). Once you are ready to get back to unresponsive yoyoing you can clean the bearing using mineral spirits or acetone.
This can happen if you do not keep the string straight in line with the groove of the yoyo. If you can keep the string from touching the sides of the yoyo you should have better luck.
The Velocity plays well enough, but I would pick almost any other YoyoFactory over it. The Velocity tries to be both a responsive and an unresponsive yoyo. Most people I know only use it as an unresponsive yoyo, and if you are going to do this you are better off getting a yoyo is made exclusively for unresponsive play.
Which yoyo do guys think Is the better yoyo for the price the velocity or the yo tricks one yoyo, I like the thought of switching from responsive to unresponsive easily but the yo tricks one is cheaper
I really like the yoyo you used in this video but it is no longer on the market. could you give me a recommendation for a yoyo that would preform similarly but is still on the market?
yotricks I've got my decision down to 2 yoyos, as my second one - Protostar or Northstar? heard they're the same size, but what's the difference besides that? Which one is more unresponsive/ with longer sleepers?
element3663 Those yoyos are nearly identical. The shape is identical. They sleep the same amount of time. The Northstar is a tiny bit heavier, and the weight is distributed differently. That being said, it would be impossible (at least for me) to describe the difference in how each yoyo feels compared to the other, because they are so similar. I feel like the Northstar was made to kind of perfect the Protostar... but at the end of the day I know an equal number of people who prefer the Protostar, as those who prefer the Northstar. yoyotricks.com/yoyo-store/yoyofactory/protostar-yoyo/
@yotricks thanks for your reply, but the unresponsive play needs more spinning right? logically it means that it needs more lubricant in order to get more spins.. thats not how it actually works?
im also looking at the dark magic and if i look into it i may try that out is it any better than the legacy 2 or is it worth it to spend around 50 dollars for it?
HI YoTricks, I have a question. Today, I received a Yomega Xodus 2, Do you think this is a good yoyo for string tricks? Because I have tried it and it doesn't seem to hold up well with grinding. Any advise?
Ryan, The Xodus 2 is not a good yoyo for learning grinds. It is okay for learning the basics of string tricks, but I would not recommend it for advanced play.
Now (and I know they're cheap) I have a few Duncan Butterflies that I can handle pretty well, I just can't seem to get them to sleep long at all, no more than like 5 seconds. However, I do have a MagicYoYo N9 (unresponsive) on it's way to my house. I'm very eager to learn. Should the Butterfly be able to perform a little better, ultimately allowing me to learn some basic string tricks until the new one arrives? I have plenty of new strings and can throw pretty well, just having the darnedest time getting it to sleep.
I need a better yoyo but not absolute beginner,I already have mastered my rocks the baby and some other basic tricks so which yoyo should be the next yoyo I buy
If you cannot get your order to process try the paypal option at the bottom of the checkout page. You can still use your card, but you may have more success with that option.
If your yoyo is tilting that means that your throw is either not straight, or not powerful enough. The only way to keep this from happening is to practice your throw to get is straighter and more powerful.
When you are starting to learn string tricks, make sure you have the right yoyo for the job!

Brings back nostalgia..
Me watching these videos 2 years back

I have not tried them, but I have heard they are quite awesome.
Definitely.

The Metal Drifter is great for these tricks.
When we star doing tutorials again this is one of the first ones we were planning on doing.
If you live in the states and get it from the YoTricks website you will get free shipping!
Awesome! Thanks!
Yes, however you will need to unscrew it a little bit to open up the gap. If the gap is all the way closed the yoyo will just bind up when you get it on the string.
Most people only do string tricks with an unresponsive yoyo, so yes :)
On YoTricks we do have free shipping in the US for orders over $25.
Yes, a fireball can do this. However, it would be much easier with a wide yoyo that has a ball bearing, like the Luminator yoyo we use in the video.
Yes, except the Advanced Kit comes with Yellow String, and in the videos I use white string because it is easier to see on the film. In general, however, when the Luminator is setup this way I prefer the yellow string.
We have plans to get into those tricks early in 2013.
@georgefaue19 It is a Peter Fish Luminator, you can get them at YoTricks
@lolplayism Hmmmm... I have not really played with the DM2 so I am not sure what the best option is. @KableTdi Even though it is counterintuitive, lube makes bearings responsive and spin for less time. If your bearing is clean (or have a very thin lube) it will spin longer and be unresponsive.
I think we will have more tomorrow night.
Not until you start learning the most advanced tricks.

@MaverickFilms24 We do not expect to get any Originators in stock this year (2011). Hopefully we will get some early next year.
Sure, the Ned yoyo would be great for these tricks.
@kaylay623 Actually they come with size B bearings.
I believe we will have more by the end of the week or early next week.
@kaylay623 Actually, type B bearings are a little smaller than type A bearings but not as small as type E.
Yes, you can lube an unresponsive yoyo. If you use a thin lube designed for unresponsive yoyos, and do not put in too much lube it will not make it play responsive.
This is not basic exactly, because strings tricks are not exactly basic. However, it does explain the basic terminology of string tricks.
The yoyo in this video is the Luminator.
I will talk to the guys about it and see if someone wants to do this trick.
@KableTdi In the binding video we teach you how to wind the yoyo, but if this is your first yoyo it should be easier to learn the more basic wind. Search for our video in youtube:

I am using the Luminator, it is responsive.
I like it.
Really!!! wow!! im defiantly getting it from you guys now!!! THX!
P.s i love your vids so easy to under stand
@lolplayism Fantastic!
You're welcome. I'm sure you will love that yoyo.
You can buy our products on the YoTricks website.
This can happen if you do not keep the string straight in line with the groove of the yoyo. If you can keep the string from touching the sides of the yoyo you should have better luck.
That is the Eli Hop.
Thank you im defiantly getting it now :) cant wait!!

Thanks for replying so quickly! thank you!! awesome vids!!!!
In this video the yoyo is responsive, but whenever I am using a green luminator it is unresponsive.
Which yoyo do guys think Is the better yoyo for the price the velocity or the yo tricks one yoyo, I like the thought of switching from responsive to unresponsive easily but the yo tricks one is cheaper
Would you make a video explaining what 1a and 2a and all those styles of throwing are? Or maybe direct me to a website or video that does?
They've made introduction videos to all of those styles. You can find those introduction videos in their playlists.
@yotricks ic thanks alot and happy new year man.
Nice Yoyo Tricks. For Beginners
@R2Dieter Do a search in youtube for:
brain-scrambler yoyo trick
and you will find the video where we teach you how to do the front-mount.
I also learned how to bind pretty quickly (well just need some more practice) and am keeping it on the unresponsive side since it sleeps longer.
If sounds like you just need to work on getting your throw a bit straighter. The yoyo sounds like it is fine.
very helpful videos, thank you!
I really like the yoyo you used in this video but it is no longer on the market. could you give me a recommendation for a yoyo that would preform similarly but is still on the market?
I suggest you get the Sage Yoyo Starter Pack. We designed it with YoYoFactory to play in the same way as the yoyo used in this video, just better.
I just got the sage can I do these tricks with it also?
yotricks I've got my decision down to 2 yoyos, as my second one - Protostar or Northstar? heard they're the same size, but what's the difference besides that? Which one is more unresponsive/ with longer sleepers?

Can I do these 1A string tricks with an unresponsive yoyo?
Yes.
Clone 1 unresponsive yoyo are made to do string tricks
Yes but you have to bind and also 1a Will only take 10 seconds so you won’t be needing a unresponsive yo-yo for five minutes
Some Duncan yoyos are good, some are not so good.
Hello yoticks if I use a hyper Bandai yoyo called DialMars can I do all 1A-5A tricks???
No yoyo can do all 5 styles.
@yotricks thanks for your reply, but the unresponsive play needs more spinning right? logically it means that it needs more lubricant in order to get more spins.. thats not how it actually works?
Which yoyo are you using in this video and is it responsive
I actually have not tried any of the GT yoyos.
Hi Adam when do u think more velocity I ant to order one so please get them soon black also
Is it good to have a longer string to do 1A tricks with?
Can you do string tricks with a Duncan Butterfly XT?
Yes, but only the basics.
Do you often use your company's yoyo?
im also looking at the dark magic and if i look into it i may try that out is it any better than the legacy 2 or is it worth it to spend around 50 dollars for it?
HI YoTricks, I have a question. Today, I received a Yomega Xodus 2, Do you think this is a good yoyo for string tricks? Because I have tried it and it doesn't seem to hold up well with grinding. Any advise?
Ryan,
The Xodus 2 is not a good yoyo for learning grinds.
+DTP Davidock It is quite difficult to get a Butterfly to sleep much more than 5 seconds.
Is a metal drifter good for starting these tricks? If not what do you guys recommend?
+Subspace Wheeler The metal drifter is a fine yoyo for these tricks.
Are you going to start making tutorials for diabolo tricks aswell?
Possibly.
Are all the thingsin the luminator advanced kit applied to the one you are using?
What yo-yo should I get.for beginner's level
Do you already know how to bind?
I need a better yoyo but not absolute beginner,I already have mastered my rocks the baby and some other basic tricks so which yoyo should be the next yoyo I buy
I would recommend the Sage Yoyo Starter Pack.
yoyotricks.com/yoyo-store/yotricks/the-sage-yoyo-starter-pack/
I tried to buy the sage yoyo but I didn't work I am from singapore
If you cannot get your order to process try the paypal option at the bottom of the checkout page. You can still use your card, but you may have more success with that option.
Yotricks help
My protostar always tilt while sleeping and makes it hard to land it on the string help
Plz respond quickly
If your yoyo is tilting that means that your throw is either not straight, or not powerful enough. The only way to keep this from happening is to practice your throw to get is straighter and more powerful.
