Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
Dude I've been watching your videos forever. I just want to say thank you for introducing me to tons of new music.. It's inspiring how much you love what you do and it's great you've become successful because of it. Keep it up, we all love you here! Oh a side note, where the hell is Cal?
thank you for leaving a comment that isnt terrible

yes Anthony is the best. never heard of this group . I love it so far . THANKS ANTHONY!!
rt
The opening track is my favorite. The "I was a child in the ivy then" passage is so remarkable, and then the final explosion at the end caps off the song beautifully.
Great review, though. Pretty much agree across the board (though, this is my favorite FF record as of now).
I was thinking the same thing. Best Fleet Foxes album
I love that part too.. also love naides/ cassadies aswell but he never mentioned that one
I love how that wall of sound crashes back in after his little whimpering vocal passage in Thumb Print Scar.
Third of May / Õdaigahara alone is a 10/10
Honestly
Easily the best song i've heard by them
@@iamboomer.4673 It's in my top 5, but my favorite from them has to be Helplessness Blues
@@agnomenamedgrimblegromble3735 gotta be grown ocean but helplessness blues is a close second
I mean for god’s sake it’s so good
This deserves a strong 9
The transition into June from On Another Ocean is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard even the melody towards the end of the track is amazing. This album definitely deserved a decent to strong 9. Smh
Been waiting for this review for two weeks, and I'm really glad you saw the same haunting beauty in it that I did. I feel like this album couldn't have come with better artwork, because it's so reflective of the somnolence and weight of it all. It felt like a dark tide was washing up on me during On Another Ocean, or like I was standing at a cliff-face while the surf sprayed around me on I Should See Memphis. I was a little surprised to hear your hesitation of that song, because the ending violin section made me cry when I first heard it. This album's a 9 for me, but I'm glad to hear your praise for aspects of it! Thanks again for reviewing.
You know, I don't even really like this album. But I threw you a like just because this is one of the few comments that's not a meme.
+SuperPaulBF thanks for the youtube gold kind sir
Definitely agree with you, I've been listening to this album over and over and over ever since I heard of it (Never heard of Fleet Foxes before). I'm in love!
After reading this and anticipating the violins... which was very sweet to hear from your heart... I still have to prepare myself before I can get to that song. This is how music continues on as a force of the spirit and healing as it always has. Period. Historical.
I SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED A DECENT 9 ON TWITTER YESTERDAY, FANTANO!
WHY DIDN'T YOU ASK FOR A 10 INSTEAD? WHY ARE YOU HALF-ASSING THIS!?
God, I love this album. The ambient, lower register, "mumbling", and all that gets a little tiring at first and I couldn't even listen all the way through the first time, but the more you listen and get familiar the better it feels. Every distinct melody and motif just hits so much harder after the tense continuous build-up of the album. The themes in each song are just so satisfying and worth the wait and when Third of May hits... Goddamn. I'm a FF fanboy so it's hard to say this is my favorite, but I can't help, but feel like I would be a little disappointed after a while with the release of this album if they just played it safe and put out some catchy but well layered harmony focused songs like usual(not that that's a fair or complete summary of their work). I'm glad they're experimenting and growing and it leaves excitement for the future if there are any more projects to come.

I only listened to two of their albums...
Personally I think that this is Fleet Foxes best album. While I love their other LPs, their songs seem to sound very alike. I guess that's their signature style, but I always felt like they could have done more. And that is what they've done on this album with all the experimentation.
A light to decent 9 in my opinion
i agree and i love the fact that the album even feels like a beautiful crack up.....if thats possible....well this is the feeling i get from it anyway...i havnt been able to stop listening to it since its release to be honest
I didn't really like this album as much to start off with. I mean, the first tracks left me feeling very weird about the new sound. I think what I had loved about the two albums previous, was the dynamic sound and very folksy sound. Now, it seemed jumbled.
However, I'm glad to see it's being received well. Maybe this is one of those albums that will grow on me after another listen!
Shawn Gardner have you given it any more listens? Third of May for sure has become one of my favorite songs, and I honestly didn’t feel good about it my first listen but it grew on me.
for real, it is unbelievably good
pshhh this is 9/10 at leeeaasssttt and helplessness blues should have easily been your first 10
I’m from the future. I bet you’re quite pleased now lol
@@SplendidCoffee0 How come? Did he change his mind about the album?
Lintu he put it at number 2 on his albums of the decade list.
@@SplendidCoffee0 Ohh alright! Thanks.
Lintu no problem
While I enjoy Anthony's reviews, it's almost a given that he is going to completely miss on an integral track on a record. On this one it was I Should See Memphis, which is an absolutely stunning piece that lies outside of the safety zone for this band in a way none of the more bombastic experimental tracks do. The lyrical tone and very deliberate lyrical pacing are a severe departure from the tried and true formula, and all the more effective for it. That slight hesitation when Robin sings the title line near the end of the song conveys and resolves so much of the narrative emotion... Said simply, this song will latch onto your soul and haunt you. Most compelling track on the album for that reason, though some of the others mentioned may be easier listens.
I should see Memphis is an astounding piece of music - I adore it , but it makes me cry . Robins hesitation on this track is very moving.
enndddlessssss vaaaaaaaacation.........
Very well said, that song is the subtle climax of Robins exploration as far as i’m concerned. It’s a gradual realization of how the conflicts of history are also reflected on an interpersonal level as we grow divided by time and direction, an acknowledgment of the misunderstanding and pride that causes this conflict, and finally a promise to move forward with the interests of one another in mind. Beautiful track
Well said, I Should See Memphis is my favourite track on the album, along with the opener.
No I do think it’s the weakest next to the self titled song, the rest are great though
8 is a bit low for me but i really enjoyed review man, really descriptive, i think you captured the feeling of the album, i don't blame you for keeping off analysing the lyrics too much though
This is album of the year. What the hell is going to top this?
TheLebowski5 The comedy of man starts like this...
A Crow Looked at Me - mount Eerie is probably my favorite of this year.
2017 is a great year for music. From Kendrick, to The War on Drugs, to Fleet Foxes, to Tyler the Creator, to Lorde, to The National.
So it's all different opinions decide.
Hands down my favorite FF album. Just saw them live for the 1st time last week and mearcstapa sounded other worldly! Most wonder why im so obsessed with Crack up. The production, the harmonies, the strings section oh my. All in all, I love the experimentation of it.
People probably gonna call out Anthony's previous, somewhat unfavorable comments on Fool's Errand in contrast to his positive take here, but if you all actually watch the channel you know that he lends a lot of credit to how something works in the flow of the tracklist. It's actually great because fewer and fewer people today sit down for the full experience of an album in how it's meant to be heard. So the fact that there is a change of heart here is a testament to the nature of context and how things can function more broadly in music than if a song is good vs. bad. I already knew this album was great. Happy you think so too Fantano.
I also listened to fools errand on its own and disliked it, but now I think its a great song.
My favorite record of all time. Without a doubt.
It's wonderful there is not a wasted second on it.

The comment section is cancerous.
Nobody wants to discuss about the music anymore.
Yeah it's impossibly hard to find a place on the internet where people want to disscus music and not just shit on others opinions.

TheHunkIsSprunk Because people have your own thoughts on music, nobody cares about reviews, but when it comes to entertainement, melon is very good.
S3ARCH anD D3STR0Y people who actually enjoy music care about reviews as it is a compilation of interesting ideas from a professional source
I wish it would be 50% memes and 50% discussion about the album in any of his videos, but it's always just 99% recycled memes.
This is such a dense album, I’m sure you worked your ass off on this one. And thanks for not talking about Father John Misty or Robin Pecknold’s college hiatus narrative.
Anthony, I think this album will only continue to grow on you with the rest of the year. Take note of how this album is a little meta. It's sets out to obliterate any expectations that casual folk fans (the "Starbucks CD rack" fans) might have. It's not leaning into the Mumford and Sons fake-folk motif. I mean, the "mumble folk" opener compares and contrasts with the super melodic opener of the first album. Reminds me of when Thom Yorke described Kid A; he wanted to ditch harmony and needed rhythm. I feel like Robin wanted to ditch formula and needed experimentation.
This album is by far my favorite fleet foxes album. They explore territory that has never been explored on this album, and I love it. It's definitely a more challenging listen, but it's worth it. They definitely had been listening to a lot of Radiohead while making it
Flip that 8 upside down its an 8 now
MoreCowbellStudios holy shit you're right
flip it horizontally. now its ∞
Nothanks nope
I kind of disagree with you about the intro and outro, I think that those two tracks are the strongest and take me on the most interesting journey in the album. I love the use of the almost whisper-like vocals that are blindsided with the loud, dense orchestration of instruments they put together. My favorite three songs are the intro, third of may/odaigahara, and the outro.
this is worth a 9....at least...
i should see memphis is easily my one of my favorite tracks on the album. pure catharsis, especially *because* of the cadence of the words-“just let me… at him.” idk i guess i really feel the stirring emotion/quiet bubbling anger? also, musically or maybe linguistically i find the sounds of words used so pretty. perdition, appomattox, Kinshasa, cassius!! beautiful all around imo.
I thought it was just let me "end", which is dark but makes more sense. At who?
Thanks for your thoughts on this. I'm glad you found the album hard to size up because I'm still there myself. I've put it on a good number of times and it hasn't hit me or grasped me yet and I consider myself a mega-fan of literally all of their projects
Dear Anthony,
"The Empryean" by John Frusciante is a great album that I believe you should review or ,at the very least, have an opinion on. I know it's 8 years old but I think it's still worth reviewing, it's very conceptual and is very grounded in Johns well-known guitar playing as well as including a number of other various string instruments/sounds, rather than his more recent 'avant-garde' electronic work. It contains a beautiful cover of Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren" and, although it touches heavily on religious/spiritual ideas in each song, the lyrics can be perceived as having relevance within todays world/current affairs. In my opinion it's a very good album and shouldn't be overlooked or left untouched. Anthony, you probably wont read this, but if you do, it would be much appreciated if you at least say something about it. Thanks for all of your hard work and reviews,
Nick.
Amazing album
This album makes me happy and sad at the same time. And I have no complaints. Drown me in your melancholy filled joyous experiments Fleet Foxes. I love it.
This video puts me on a nostalgia trip. I remember i discovered Anthony around 2011 and i think that Fleet Foxes review was the first i ever watched. Not sure though. Things were so much different then.
Kept Woman is such a beautiful song it's unlike any other musical experience
Omg! Thanks for reviewing this album! Was not expecting you to be a Fleet Foxes fan. I was kinda avoiding listening to it since the singles leading up to it didn't do much for me, except for Third of May. Will definitely listen to it now and give it some time to grow on me.
Yellow flannel/10
I think people didn't appreciate this album when it came out but they do after Shore. This has always been my favourite and although I LOVED Shore, I Crack-Up even more because of the production especially. I wish they'd continued with the experimentation. People say it's a "challenging" listen. I think it's just something you should let yourself get lost in and accept that you're stepping into another space. The production really let's that come through. You never know where you're going next because of all the surprises so just let it carry you :)
Shore album review???? 👀
Can’t wait.
He'll prolly score a light 7
NikOnly unfortunately
The muffled synths in Odaigahara is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard
Check out the fleet foxes playlist they made 'For Inspiration for crack up. Some great tunes, including a cool instrumental that has a similar synth sound robin def picked out for in Odaigahara
If you see a video of them playing it live, it’s actually a flute!
@@PloistI just saw them live in New Orleans last week. Third of May/Odaigahara was the highlight of the night for me. They had an incredibly talented flute player with them and I had my eye on him all night.
This album makes me feel like I’m on top of an abandoned lighthouse looking out at the sea
This that mumble folk, that mumble folk, old melons really want lots of that
This record is fucking amazing. 9/10 for me.

For me FF is an 8, HB is a 9.6 and Crack-Up is a 9.4. Can't wait for LP 4 which has already been announced(ish)
Andreas Linguististine II really?
Ff is at least a 9
So, how do you like FF4?

Sooo guys can we get an actual discussion about music in the comments like dude I get it memes are funny I like jokes repeated ad nauseum as much as the next person but this *is* a music review channel.

What did you guys think of the new dgd song.? Sick or what?

Liked it slightly less than you, but still very enjoyable. Felt nice to hear some new tunes from them. I described this album to a friend as the Fleet Foxes' "Close to the Edge." Probably an ignorant statement, but I felt it was sufficient to convey its complexity.
I miss that time when Cal called them "the fleet faxes"
I've listened to this since the leak, and now that it has settled it my mind, I totally agree with your analysis of it. I appreciate the evolution of the band in song structure and composition, and even though it didn't all pan out, I am hopeful for the future. Robin already teased an album title for LP4 (in jest?). I've read a few complaints that the album was boring or slow, which I certainly disagree with. The beginning burns slowly, but I would say that the mumble-singing he does in track 1 is enough to draw me in. By the end of the song I'm sold.
This new album is just what I needed. I find it so refreshing how excited it makes me feel. Its silly, right? But GAAWD did I need new Fleet Foxes. I also love that Fontana can appreciate them as much as I do. I'm in tears. lulz
This album is so brilliant, I don't think there's a bad or even mid tier song on this record. This album takes me to another dimension when I listen to it in full. I think this album is a decent 9. Also... Helplessness Blues is easily a 10/10 and is my second favorite album of 2010s.
I like the review and I really like you but,
wtf.
I am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar
awkward?
it's so manic and so good, and you didn't talk about the shift in - Naiads, Cassadies?
and and and. an 8?! this is easily more ambitous, grand (wtf u just said it wasn't as grand?) and MORE(!) focused as their previous two albums, and even as not a big big Fleet Foxes fan this album is easily my AOTY and probably will be. forever. traaaaaans-
also, pro-ba-bly my only problem with this album is that I now see how inferior the last two actually are in comparison with this one.
feeling a light to decent 9 on this thing.

Crack up is a great song cycle, it’s like astral weeks or something
I was gonna use the melonhead bathroom but the line was too long

Hello I like ur reviews
henlo
You should do a follow up review. I've listened to this album so many times I've lost count and I keep finding more in it. Good job on this initial listen review though!
Just listened to this. I like it even more than their earlier albums I heard from them. Their earlier records were great, but I feel like they really expanded their sound with this album. I hate that it took me so long to finally give this a try, it sounds phenomenal.
I miss music discussion, these memes are dumb, this is still a great channel, but why can't more people discuss the actual music at hand.... I'm excited to spin the new Elder album, and maybe I'll check out this record, too, (not a huge fan of fleet Foxes).... But man I'm blasting dead roots stirring right now and it's so heavy and fuzzed out, it has great energy :) Always preferred lore though for it's more prog and post rock elements!
Cracked-up sounds like a grower, and I've heard nothing but good things about it c: it's been a good month for music!
ANTHONY you missed the new artificial brain record though!!!
Shawn Smith I usually go to rateyourmusic, and see what people have to say on there lol, the discussion out ways the memers
Nailed it! Fantastic review. Agree with all you said. Love Fleet Foxes. Literally yelled, “Yessss!” when you mentioned “Helplessness Blues” was your 2011 album of the year.
Sun Giant: 8.8
Fleet Foxes: 9.1
Helplessness Blues: 9.3
Crack-Up: 9.7
The band that just gets better.
This is the best review of the album I've seen yet. You didn't spend half of it talking about the departure of Josh Tillman and you actually talked about the music. Good job.
Didn't it take a long time because Robin Pecknold (lead songwriter/singer) was getting an undergrad degree while in hiatus?
Yep
the fleet foxes are almost like a suburban death grips.

So glad this album has arrived! Fleet Foxes are amazing.
I saw them last week so have been on a binge and I think I can comfortably say that for me, with the benefit of hindsight, that "in the ocean washing off my name from your throat" is the high water mark of popular music in the 21st century so far.
I know people never like talking about the actual video in the comments but I thought this was a perfect review. I loved this album and didn't have words to explain it quite right, but Anthony found the words for me. So I appreciate that
Solid review. Wish you had touched on Robin's journey of leaving the band to pursue a degree in NYC, discovering music like Reich and other minimal composers (which I think helped inform a lot the obtuse instrumental and song progressions on this record).
Pretty much mirrored my thoughts on the album exactly. That first wall of sound after the whispery vocals in the intro really made me feel like 'they're back'
Hey Mr. Fantano. Long time fleet foxes fan here. I really liked I should see Memphis, it was so haunting, so phantom-like. The album wasn't at an 8 or a 9 on the first listen. You were very right about the patience you gotta have. All in all, it has become just as good as the other albums in my opinion. The more I listen, the better it gets.
How do you feel about it a month later? I feel it's an album that grows on a listener more than the rest of the Fleet albums because it doesn't have that strict pop feel and catchability like a White Winter Hymnal, Helplessness Blues, or Mykonos.
Third of may is one of my favorite songs of all time
I'm glad I get to continue liking this album now.
I love your reviews and your extremely dilligent work ethic in putting out so many videos, Anthony. Even when I disagree with you, I have to give it to you for putting your points in such eloquent terms, and I have to commend your want to introduce your audience to lesser known music as well. Love you always!
Here before the Shore review
I haven't ever enjoyed an album review as much, excellent job! There's one record that I would absolutely like to hear your opinion of. It's a very underground album from '69 called Touch, very profound and almost a well-kept secret among the proletariat of music, but I think it needs more exposure. I tremendously enjoy the Fleet Foxes, and Touch has proved to be one of the most astounding things I've heard. If you ever get to it, I would love to hear what you have to say of it; I don't think you will be bored. Great and insightful video! Regards :)
Great review! I have been in love with Fleet Foxes since Sun Giant and the S/T LP, and this album was really worth the wait.
You're getting better and better at making the viewer understand an album and song structures and themes without relying on any music. I know it's no easy feat so thumbs up my friend.
Okay but no one is mentioning Crack-Up? What a cinematic song!
After listening to this multiple times, I'm lukewarm on it. Someone help.
ProsecutorGodot I think it's proving to be much more divisive then their last two records, so don't worry about it.
No, no, no. I should see Memphis deserves more listens because it's become one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard ❤
I’ve finally understood why... I still love Third of May but this song was just so touching. It also helps that I do recognize the small touch of VA places.
This album is a strong 9. Don't @ me.
Damn 'I Should see Memphis' is one of my favourite tracks off the new album. Great review!
NEW ALBUM COMING OUT Y'ALL 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Best album of the year
J Alves tied with Goths for me.
Yah you enjoyed this more than I did. It's growing on me a little bit with more listening, but I think a melody or two would be nice. I was lukewarm on their first album too but pleasantly surprised by how much I loved "Helplessness Blues" which was also my fave album of 2011. This one just ain't doing it for me right now.
Melon's been abusing the yellow flannel lately... I was under the impression it was only to be worn for 9+ scores.
I've never heard a piece of music by Fleet Foxes that I didn't enjoy, but still to this day, the first EP they did, Sun giant, is still my favorite
Hey Anthony really love your reviews, it inspired me to listen to new things and even start my own project: Crimson Tears from a Dream. Maybe you will review it someday. Who knows...
“Hi everyone, FLEETFONY FOXTANO HERE”
Talk about missed opportunities 🙄
Man, what a great and succinct album review. I really loved this record and I think it will go down as a masterpiece
It was really great, really liking the way they're developing instrumentally. Personally I think it's above Helplessness Blues, mainly by that factor.
