One of hip-hop's best and most creative albums. First time I listened to it was one of the most mind-blowing experiences I've had in music.
Me too
+Ethan Flynn agreed .look up DJ shadows sets on the boiler room youtube channel.
+Ethan Flynn Nothing beats riding your bike at midnight listening to this album. Love this album so much
Flavio Rocha Haven't done that but seems like it'd really fit.
+Ethan Flynn this album got me into making music as a kid. i seriously doubt i'd still be making beats if it weren't for that three-hit combo of building steam...,the number song, and changleing.
Midnight in a Perfect World is one of those greatest "soundtrack to my life" type songs for me, nice to see this one reviewed.
It’s one of those songs you can’t play too often. It’s hard to say that because of how good it is but man it’s best to listen to it late at night when everything is just right you know.
@@aram-the-slug yes! hahaha this is exactly how I feel about it
@@aram-the-slug so its the soundtrack to your late night
@@alphalax7747 Correct!
@@aram-the-slugI play it everyday for a long time
Anytime someone talks shit about sampling, please play them this album.

I'm actually happy you reviewed it. Did not expect it at all.
***** Lol, When was the first time you heard it?
***** Some years ago I remember my brother buying it and we really enjoying what we heard that was around 2002 if I remember correctly, and was something different since I only dabbled with DOOM and his sampling, at the time before Madvillain came out, and was a huge Outkast fan
+Awesome Allen It's awesome you should change your name to Awesome Alien.
Midnight in a perfect world is one of the best songs ever created.
PLUNDERPHONICS EH!?

This album is kinda like Dark side of the moon for hip hop. Hard to overstated its place. It’s easy to take it for granted but it’s insane to image creating that album with just a sampler and god knows how many records he listened to. It’s genius for sure.
Found a copy of this album (CD) @ Goodwill for $2 yesterday.

My personal top 3:
1. Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt
2. Changeling
3. Midnight In A Perfect World
"Changeling" is my number 1. Absolute beauty.
@jessejace I especially love the synths that play at the beggining, so simple yet they make me feel so happy
My list too, except some days id swap building steam with what does your soul look like, the baseline on that track puts me in a stupor
I also like that MC Ride is on the album cover.
are you meming or being legit
You know what you're right it does look like Stefan.
+maxinator317 that's legit MC ride...
Wow. I wasn't aware he was an overweight Asian fellow
+coney island lurker really? Idk why but I don't believe it. Do you have a link or anything to prove it?
An extended version of Organ Donor exists. It's 4 minutes long, and it is on CD 2 on the deluxe edition of the album.
Jason Sanders I have that and will forever be smug
also its in Shadow's single compilation Preemptive Attack

yea this dude crazy
one of my favorite DJ Shadow tracks is actually on a DJ Krush album. It's called "Duality" and it's crazy. First you have Krush's dark beats and an interlude that seems to sample musique concrete, and then DJ Shadow kicks in with one of his best breakbeats ever (he also reuses one of the samples from "Endtroducing"). Check it out
I know this comment is super late but I'm so glad I see another rare sight of someone praising 'Duality'. Not only one of if not Shadow's best feature contribution but one of Krush's best song as well. Even ifi think Entroducing is the better album between both their catalogs, I prefer DJ Krush as a whole. Much more consistent. Side Note though: The album Duality came from (Meiso) was made in 94 and came out in 95 so Shadow probably reused it for Entroducing, not other way around. Bit not completely sure
5:29 *"... they feel soundtrack music-inspired, like I'm going to be watching some kind of hip-hop flavored horror film."*
Good description, Anthony.
Just so y'all know DJ Shadow is a super creative dude, and he purposely makes sure not to keep "re-releasing" Endtroducing over and over. So don't expect to dive into his discography getting 5 Endtroducing albums.
Transmission 2 always makes me feel like I’m experiencing the very last moments of my life. It’s like my life is flashing before my eyes and I can’t do anything but take it all in and enjoy what’s left
PRODUCING.
*epic piano starts playing*
I really like this record and understand its importance however having heard much of what its influenced beforehand I find it quite patchy to listen to with only a collection of the tracks having the magic. Its also dirt cheap to buy, one of the many 90s hip hop records that were mass produced on CD and are now subsequently cheap!
you're goated for being here
This was the last place I expected to find a Xisumavoid comment
Wow, god tier
Holy crap I didn’t know you were a fan of this album! That’s awesome!
Lol good to see you here
Probably the most important album of my life. I still get chills as soon as I hear "producing" and the piano intro at the beginning.
Can't wait till next years classic review with To Pimp a Butterfly!
It's already the best album of the decade! Aged like wine years later!
Midnight in a Perfect World is one of the most impactful downtempo/instrumental hip-hop songs I've ever heard.
One of my favorite albums of all time. Used to listen to this when I’d walk around as a young kid, the color and the expression of this record always fascinated me. Still does to this day. The creativity is absolutely immaculate. It remains a record that has a crucial place in hip hop for me. Forever changed my life.
Everytime I listen to this album I have to loop 3 or 4 times Why Hip Hop sucks in '96 because it BUMPS!

A criminally overlooked album. My favorite record of all time.
alexisonfire, my favorite band ever, used building steam with a grain of salt to introduce a show once, got me into this album, its hella good
This album not only saved my life, but it changed the way I looked at everything, especially music! I realize that not everyone will have the same experience I did when listening to this album, but it's an album that must be listened to by any fan of music. There is not a single album like it, it's my favorite album of all time. Anytime I think of this album, I just wonder how different everything would be for me had I never discovered it. It has helped me so much in life and is what ultimately got me into music of all kind and making music. To this day has the same impact of when I first listened to it.
P.S. The Number Song samples Orion by Metallica, that's the dirty background noise Anthony refers to. Surprised he didn't know that lol

and you are completely entitled to this opinion. Technically, hip hop is a culture. rap music is part of that culture. not necessarily being the sole form of music that represents the culture. personally, i feel illmatic is the greatest hip hop album, but it is also completely reasonable to have an instrumental hip hop album (especially this one), as your favorite hip hop album :)

Classic Review: Gorillaz, Demon Days.
When's it going to happen?
in 8 years
The low-pitched drone on "Numbers Song" is guitar feedback, sourced from the intro to Metallica's "Orion".
The buzzing organ/bass on The Number Song is Metallica's Orion intro on Master of Puppets. I've read that Cliff Burton played his bass through Leslie speakers, which could explain why it sounds both like a growling bass and a buzzing organ.
My favorite album off all time. This shit changed my life in '96.
Hi Anthony, thanks for the review. Love this album.
'Organ Donor Extended Overhaul' is the B-side to 'High Noon', it's also on the compilation 'Preemptive Strike'.
Hard to believe it was 20 years ago at this point... such an untimely album.
Just recently discovered this, everything about this album is cool as fuck! 🔥, from the artwork to the unique style of production. Whilst i dont like every song i appreciate the creativity in each of them but for me ‘midnight in a perfect world’ is just fucking incredible, the fact he made it all on a mpc60 with only a couple of seconds record time is even more impressive. It has its own unique sound that works & thats why its amazing... im not even sure id class it as ‘hip-hop’ it just has its own genre
i actually had to write a paper on this album for a class i took in college. i've got emotional attachment to it i couldn't believe folk was making such ideas in 96. too cool.
Avalanches - Since I Left You? As far as classic instrumentals go, it's often considered sort of a "polar opposite to Endtroducing", so that would make for a great review c:
Building Steam with a Grain of Salt is incredible...and I'm someone into heavy metal
This album is a revelation. It is timeless. Among my favorites of all time. 🍷🌌🌃
midnight and this album seriously changed my life... such a fucking classic.
Thank you for reviewing this Anthony. I first discovered Shadow through a Chevy commercial which used "Building Steam", I did a little research, listened to a couple tracks, then in June I found the album at a little music store on the boardwalk in Ocean City NJ, and promptly bought it. I remember not fully understanding the album the first time I listened to it, but after a couple listens? I LEANED into it. It quickly became a new all-time favorite, and I've been listening to it on-and-off for half a year now. One of my resolutions is specifically to cut down on Endtroducing, and you posting this very thoughtful review was a great little sendoff, once again, thank you.
One of the greatest albums ever produced.
Vinyl of this arrvived lastnight, listened to it for the first time after having never listened to any tracks off it.
Wow, talk about a varied sound, Napalm Brain/ Scatter Brain turns into a straight up breakbeat/ drum n bass type beat?!? Insane, totally blew my mind, every track is great.
First time I biught a vinyl without knowing it
YES!!! I LOVE THIS ALBUM TO DEATH!!
the voice at the end of the album (actually the whole sound snippet) is from a David Lynch directed scene from Twin Peeks.
The first time I listened to this album I was stoned at a freinds house wayyyy before I liked anything remotely hip hop yet I was completely blown away. It was the first album to bring me into hip hop even though it took me about 5 years later to enjoy hip hop. His 2nd album is nearly equally as good as well.
6 years later. I just got here after listening to Midnight In A Perfect World, interested in Anthony's opinion on this album.
The album puts me in a melancholic and relaxed mood. It reminds me of simpler times. The album cover really adds to the atmosphere of it all - I know covers aren't talked about often, but imo they add an important flair to an album!
I really enjoy how you express your opinion and the way that you're describing songs. I wish I was nearly as decent in putting my thoughts together like that.
It's funny to say, but this review puts me in a similar way the album does. 6 years later, I wish I could go back in time, play the album, watch Anthony's latest video, and enjoy life for a little while. :-)
Shadow has stated that he experienced a strong depression while writting this album which can be easily heard thru the record.
And Midnight has to be the perfect example of that musical relief
A classic! Thanks for reviewing & possibly Endtroducing it to a new generation & audience. Long live MoWax & Unkle77 :)
When that album came out it was more of a trip hop album than hip hop. I wouldn't consider it hip hop considering there's not rap songs on the album. You have to realize that electronic music was still new and very underground back in 96', it was those people that picked up this album. It was a sign of the time of what other people were putting out in the trip hop genre. I think Dj Shadow just did his own take on the genre and pulled it off well. I think it's been considered hip hop in the last 10 years since edm and hip hop have fused more. I happened to buy this album when it came out, and at first I didn't like it, then I came to really love it a few months later and still a classic to me today.

Pleasepleaseplease review The Avalanches - Since I Left You. one of my favourite albums of all time. next level sampling
I was surprised this review showed up. I'm glad it was a good review. This is one of my favorite albums of all time.
It's crazy when you listen to the song he sampled for Building Steam -
it's so simple but it comes out so damn thick
Every once and a while when I watch one of Fantano's reviews, I get extremely interested in checking out the album he's talking about. This is one of them. Thanks for the put on and have a happy new year.
I'm not an avid hip-hop fan but I've more than often found myself fascinated with some great instrumentals. This album is the Valhalla of this notion.
How about The Avalanches "Since I Left You" record. It's similar in that it's comprised entirely of samples. It was on Questlove's Top 10 albums of all time and is my #1.

can you not?
Organ Donor on Endtroducing is just an abridged version of the "Extended Overhaul" version from Preemptive Strike, released in 1993.
I read online that DJ Shadow created this album at a time in his life when he was depressed and he put that feeling into the tunes. If you keep that in mind, this album is all the more better because you realize the headspace of the man it came out of, which makes it more impactful. I discovered DJ Shadow on the amazing 90's documentary about NYC underground homeless (they literally lived underground as in... under the streets) called Dark Days. He provided many tunes for it. I HIGHY recommend a watch!
This album helped me a lot last year. Love it to death
