Here's a super thorough review by Gordon Laing: • Panasonic Lumix G9 rev...
Also I think I covered most questions I got asked in the end, but if you have others let me know and I'll do my best to answer them!
I love the Panasonic G9! Fast autofocus, fast frame rates, lots of buttons, comfortable to hold, massive viewfinder, good video options, cracking sensor, ridiculous stabilisation, and so on...
It seems to me that we're moving past having to have different cameras for different scenarios. There are several do it all pro cameras now, and the Panasonic Lumix G9 is definitely one of them.

Using multishot should fine when you're using long exposures and already blurring things.
In camera HDR? Focus stacking? Intervalometer? Bulb timer? Time lapse?

Hey James, really like your video style. Have watched a few of your videos and subscribed. This review was good fun and informative. My last video was a review of my GH5 and watching your review for this Panasonic has inspired me to up my game in getting out and about for review purposes. If you ever want to do a video together I would love too, check out my Mavic Pro videos it would be great fun. 😎

This camera is still relevant in 22. James updated as he prints large etc, but for most situations, the g9 does the job. The high res mode in mode 2 deals with movement great too.

      How is the autofocus?

    • @toxictabasco
      @toxictabasco 5 лет назад +1

@@joshdiditt Yes, the dfd, is amazing fast and accurate, faster and more accurate than the phase type AF in low light with large aperture lenses. For stills, it nails focus all the time. And for stuff like BIF and wildlife, this camera is amazing. For video, depending on the lens, it will be good or not so good. The new LUMIX lenses version II work amazingly well for video and AF. And even better for manual focus.

  • @moke1310
    @moke1310 6 лет назад +6

Great review. I am an Olympus user (EM1) and the only weakness in the camera compared to my Canon kit was the continuous / tracking AF. I know the MkII has improved (as obviously has the G9) so the last real weakness of MFT compared to DSLR's seems to have been cured. And the choice of two OEM lens sources is great. Keep the videos coming.

Brought mine home yesterday and absolutely LOVE IT! I'm blown away by the build quality.
I don't mind the video record button where it is. It means I will have to make a conscious decision to activate it.
On my little Sony NEX-7 I was constantly bumping the video record button accidentally and recording unwanted clips.
There are so many features with the G9 that it's a bit of a learning curve but I look forward to putting it through its paces
The one challenge I am having is figuring out how to get the GPS working with my iPhone. In the Panasonic Image App Geotagging remains greyed out. ;-(. But so far, that's the only challenge I am having.
Keep up the great content. Cheers!

    • @MikeGoodwin

Thanks. I fixed it, but I'm not quite sure what I did. In my iPhone under Privacy>>Location Services I went to the Panasonic Image App and changed the permission from "Allow When Using App" to "Always Allow". Nothing happened. I then went on a walk, used up my camera battery, pulled it out for a recharge, put it back in and the Bluetooth GPS option is now working. Even when I set it to "Allow When Using App".
I'm not questioning it. It's some sort of Voodoo. ;-)

I think I'm going to look at the G9 and compare it with the Canon M5.
I've already decided against the Sony A6500 (too many issues for me to feel confident using).

2 years later... i just bought a G9. Still learning how to use it, but so far I am loving it. Fabulous camera, feels good in the hand. I still have my Canon 1Dx, but have sold my pro zooms and teles to fund the MFT move. Keeping the macros and tilt/shift to use with a speedbooster. After the 1Dx, the G9 feels tiny :) The only thing I miss is the voice recording for notes about photographs (if it can do that, someone please tell me). I love the tiny lenses, especially the long teles. I love the lens choices including being able to adapt specialty lenses. And I especially love the 6K/4K Photo. It is the best implementation of applying electronic solutions to photographic problems that I am aware of. Pulling an 18MP still from a video feed is brilliant. My 1Dx has an 18MP sensor. It is plenty high enough resolution for paid work. I love that I have higher depth of field for macro, and focus stacking is the icing on the cake. I am loving MFT, and the G9 is still a great camera in 2021. Love it.

Depth by defocus means what it sounds like. It's a fast system but it works by doing the "hunting" and "seeking" that annoy the hell out of people. It goes through the focus range to discover the correct point. So it will hunt a lot. In continuous autofocus when filming video, this causes the rapid "pulsing" that annoys people so much. The ideal for video would be phase detect. For stills, depth by defocus is faster but almost unusable for continuous video focus. It's essentially the exact same system as the GH5 with some tweaks. It's one of the major flaws of the Panasonic M4/3 range for video. Light sensitivity and megapixel counts being the others. Some would argue the lack of full frame but that is a totally subjective thing. I'd love to upgrade my GX80 to a G9. It's the camera I'd buy right now. I'm reasonably invested in the lenses and familiar with the menu systems and ergonomics.

Thanks for the info. I have a GH5 and a G85 for some video work at the office, and needed a good stills camera. I wanted to stay in the micro 4/3 environment for lens compatibility, but I didn't know if the G9 would be significantly better than getting another G85...but it looks like that may be the case. Excellent review.

HiRes works well with long-time exposure - gives quite typical effects even with moving objects in the scene. Not perfect, but it extends the range of use. (Well, I tested it with Olympus cameras, and I guess it might work the same with the G9 …)

Nice and fun review which is in line with my own experience. I got my camera last year in december and as an early buyer I received the battery grip for free. An incredibly nice combo to work with when using larger lenses. In fact I liked the camera so much that I decided to ditch all my full frame gear. I feel relieved by the loss in weight I had to carry around. So far no regrets and actually amazed about how good the results are. Far better than I expected even in low light. Sure the full frame wins in the noise department but the difference is easily manageable. O, and when shooting video set the function selector to video. In that case you can use the normal shutter button to start en stop recording in stead of the oddly placed record button. Cheers.

Still on the fence between the GH5 and G9. I'll be using the camera for both stills and video, perhaps 50/50. The G9 recording time limit is a bummer but the skin-tone and 6.5 stops IBIS are big pluses. Been stuck on that fence for months now. Maybe the Lumix S1/S1r will be out before I make up my mind and then it's a 3-way decision. 😎🙃

There is a hack that you can do to the g9 to unlock its time limit recording, even there is a hack to the g7 also. Look it up here on youtube. I did it to my g9 and it works just as normal. I havent shoot longer than 30 mins 4k60fps with it but the camera wasnt not over heating or acts abnormal. Oh,. And i also have the gh5, been using it for almost 2 yr and i love it. Got the g9 3 days ago for mainly photo camera and also a backup for my gh5

    1. You're hilarious. Love your commentary. 2. I have a GH4 that I primarily use for video (because it struggles with stills). Do you think the video is comparable to a GH5? I'd like to just buy one camera. Not have one for stills and one for video. It SEEMS like the G9 could do both? Maybe?????

In your video where you talk about the announcement of the G9, you mentioned Fujifilm. Well, after watching this review video a few months back (and because I used to shoot with Olympus in the early days of M43) I have decided to go back to M43 and ordered a G9. I will be selling my Fujifilm gear..... and will end up getting a GX9 for a street/travel camera. Buying a GX85 not too long ago made me realize why I loved shooting with M43 all those years ago, only now they are even better. Oh, and I enjoy watching all of your videos. They make me homesick for the UK, so thanks for that..... Watching your content has resulted in me spending money and wanting to move back to the UK. My life is a real mess now. :-)

I get the same silence that you been getting so If you figure out what the deal is please post about it!

Good review, a proper, practical, user review. I think the G9 is a m43 Nikon, it feels and works so much like a Nikon dslr. This is good. A useful video because I'm going to be thinking hard before the Photo Show, about whether to get a D750 and keep using my Nikon lenses, or pull the trigger on the change over to m43 (which I've used for years as a back up/leisure kit) and make the G9 my main camera. Very tempted, so tired of carrying big heavy kit for work...

I agree with the other comments about your style. It is a useful way of reviewing gear. And you opened my eyes about the "little detail", that the equivalence also goes backwards; that when you shoot iso 6400 f/2,8 in fullframe poor light, it´s only necessary to shoot iso 3200 f/1,4, so the IQ is almost the same. I still have my fullframe and a GX8, but "forgets" the fullframe more and more often, because I can carry much more micro4/3-gear without getting my neck og back spoiled. I´m so hooked on the G9, and it might end up with that.

James, I too have the G85 (we talked before briefly about the timelapse on it) and probably should've gotten the G9 so I could share my micro 4/3 lenses with it. Instead, I got the Sony A7 III, and wow the lenses are big. Anyway, the 1080p120 is blowing me away, so the G9 should be even better with 1080p180 so that might be fun to play around with. I'll be in Normandy in about a week to give it a good test, I can't fit the G85 in my bag so it's Sony only for this trip. Risky to take a new camera I know nothing about on a big trip (I'm normally US based), but I'm hoping it'll be a good compromise between still images and video, rather than trying to pack both my Nikon D800 and G85 into the same camera bag. Anyway, great review, most G9 reviews are heavily video focused even though it was intended to appeal to stills photographers so I appreciate your perspective.

Back in 2002 did waterfowl field assistant work in rice fields in Arkansas. That was from January to March and the birds will do more eye catching behavior related to courtship then. But they may only do it certain times during the day if recall it correctly. So feeding, courtship, flying around happens dawn dusk. They rest on the water at night. Not totally passionate birder, so may have forgotten. We did use night vision which was pretty cool. Nothing strange happens at night nothing at all, like deer walking on hind legs ;) Really like G9 for "studio" and maybe catching quick expressions during public events. Nice for wildlife, sports option.

You dropped FF for a lighter setup... and you get a G9? Interesting. You should compare it to the Olympus E-M1 mk2. G9 is like the Olympus, still oriented camera, with video capabilities I guess that's why the button is placed in an odd position.

The mean reason for me, is the little LCD on top.
    Can't live without.
Why are these removed with most newer camera's?

Hi James. Great vid, as always. Quick question though, why aren’t you using the Fuji xt 2, apparently it is a great camera for the still photographer. Or is it that you are looking for a camera that can do both, videos and photos? I am struggling between g9 and xt 2. maybe someone has an interesting view on it?

Yeah looking for a camera that does both, and I love the stabilisation :)

    Great Review :-)
I think with it's dual card slots it is a great upgrade for anyone who makes their living with it.
For a hobbist like me the added Features are not worth the price (though it is justified).
    As for the mic:
The 23€ Takstar mic is pretty much at the same level as the Røde at a fraction of the price (actually beating it in some tests), so if your Røde is broken I can recomend it.
    Cheers from Germany

Love the dual card slots on my GH5, I use one slot for saving videos and the other slot for stills. if one of my 128GB cards fills, theres no faffing changing cards it automatically saves data where there is space

I think the Rode camera shotgun is flappy crap (does sound good when not broken). Sennheiser or Shure lenshopper are much better alternatives and DON'T use those wretched 9volt batteries. Very entertaining 'review'.

Good video :) Thanks for reviewing - your way - the G9! One thing tho, could you be a bit more aware about the changing sound level over your video? As a french follower, I listen really carefully so - I don't mind for jump scares and other surprising sound effects, but - I'm loosing my ears each time...
Still love your channel, don't get me wrong :) Just wanted you to know that.
Here's a sort of feedback on your content ;) Good stuff! Keep it up! And keep an ear on your sound level!

    Great and helpful review, thanks.
I'm soooorely tempted, but I don't think I can quite justify the expense for what seems like a fairly modest upgrade from the G80. There are occasions when I yearn for more dynamic range and a bit more resolution, but they're so rare it's not worth forking out £2k minus whatever I could get from selling the G80. Doesn't stop me wanting it though...

Hi James, I think Ive watched this review at least 5 times and its still just as amusing and informative, in that very British way. One question for you. Now that you've had the camera for a while, do you find that you can achieve the same image quality and tack sharpness that you did with your Nikon's? It's my one concern about the setup and it will be a big investment for me, so I want to get it right.

At 13:50 I was struck by the difference in how the colours are so different over the 3 cameras, have you any idea which camera recorded the closest to the true colours? Or is that a stupid question?

Being more of a photo shooter than a video shooter, have you considered looking into Olympus EM1 II? I don't own either, but in my experience I have always preferred Olympus over Panasonic for photos (for video, it's the opposite).

Hi James: I'm looking to switch to Panasonic G series because of issues with weight of gear, and also because of the features of the cameras (G80 or G9 is the probable choice).
One of my main interests is sports photography. Have you tried it again since for pulling stills shots from the 6K video? If so, I would love to hear what you think of them.
For photographing golfers, this facility seems a godsend as you can put the shutter to silent AND start recording on the golfer's backswing - which, as any pro sports photographer will tell you, is an absolute no-no when taking stills normally. You have to time the first shutter click to fire after impact otherwise you're likely to be frogmarched off the course. Thanks. Love your work. Chris S.
