I love the features on the G9, especially the higher resolution viewfinder and video capabilities, but I prefer the lighter/smaller Olympus OMD EM-1 MK II.

With the E-M5ii you can have lens or body but not both, except for a couple of hideously expensive Olympus Pro lenses. I just got the G9 after finding that it has become a great hybrid camera itself. The G9 autofocus is actually more reliable than GH5's. I shot a feature film last year with the GH5. I eventually sold my GH5 for the BMPCC4K. After seeing how good the G9 has become after the 2.0 firmware, I immediately bought it. So far, I am impressed and very happy with my choice. The G9 autofocus is almost up there with Sony and Canon af.
I like the G9 for a travel camera. I own a G7 and several Nikon cameras. The technology has grown so fast that I am ready to upgrade to other formats. Your largest investment is in lenses. Give that lots of thought.
Nice video. I particularly like the demo on the autofocus. Great actual samples. Just want to ask, with regards to stills photography only, which do you prefer, Olympus OMD EM1 mark 2 or Panasonic G9? Thanks.
Really tough call. I would base that less on the camera and more on the lenses you own or would like to own. Panasonic lenses will work better with the G9 and vice versa. I like the menus and touch interface better on the G9. I like the styling and size better on the EM1 MII, but all of that is very personal.
Yeah great that you are back :) Im really happy when there is a new video from you guys. Your are a special team and really enjoy your reviews!! Stink eye hahaha :D
I could easily afford the G9 and wanted the high end features, but the size defeats the purpose of M4/3, so I chose the GX9 instead. I am pretty happy with it, but I wish the G9 could have been made smaller.
Hey there. I purchased the g9 & I love it but I am still torn between returning it & getting the Gh5 because I do more video than stills. I was wondering do u think the g9 is as good as the gh5?? I want to keep it but I dont want to regret not getting the gh5 if it performs much better. Can u give me some perspective on if they are the same or should I just get the gh5. Thanks
It’s not so much performance it’s features. Both are very capable at video but the gh5 has shutter angle, more controls, 10 bit, optional vlog. The g9 May have slightly better autofocus as it’s the newer camera. Otherwise for video the gh5 definitely wins.
Please do GX9 review soon! The photo you took with G9 in this video is jpg out of the camera without edit? The color is pop! Looks better than Sony! Hope GX9 IQ as good or even better!
NETVO TV in short, yes if you want a camera you can put in your jacket pocket this is bigger than the camera you want and you should probably go with gx9. We are currently reviewing another camera and then after that we hope to try out the gx9. Not all jpegs are straight out of camera. Stabilization stills definitely are not edited and neither are iso tests on our website. But still raw exported from lightroom not in camera jpeg.
TheCameraProject I see, I want to put it in a Peak Design Sling 10L bag, both will fit but I like my setup light and easy to shoot at any angle and as stealth as possible! By the way, which color(ash, Charcoal, Black) of Peak Design Sling 10L bag is the best(nice looking for long, and won’t need clean for long)?
Yeah, I wouldn't call this combination stealth, it doesn't look like a 1DX with a 70-200 2.8 on it, but it also doesn't look like an RX100, so yeah, it feels pretty standard mid-range DSLR size. I don't own the peak design bags, but I think Charcoal would probably be my call... or black. Ash looks like it might get dirty after a while.
Hey, Josh, great video. At least you also showed some great pictures and videos. Some recessions have reported problems with IBIS and the accuracy in weak light. Did you notice anything?
Achim do you mean autofocus accuracy in low light? I didn’t have issues with the ibis. Autofocus in low light was still good but on Olympus lenses wasn’t nearly as reliable as with Panasonic
Nice video. I bought this camera a couple of weeks back and love for all the reasons you have pointed out. One thing I would like you to discuss is the cine D and cine V profiles for video. Thanks
Would you upgrade from a g80 to a G9 for stills (macro, landscape and my kids) BTW there is a new firmware out 1.2 for the G9. Are you going to test is out?
Janic Wesseling I don’t own the g9 to test the firmware but I’ve heard great things. As for the upgrade I’d say the autofocus and image stabilization will be the biggest enhancements. Some color science tweaks as well. Image quality won’t be leaps and bounds different but better.
Matthew Mockovic soccer could be a little fast in terms of electronic shutter. You could see some rolling shutter artifacts. In terms of focusing I think it depends on your vantage point and line the the player. I think it would do pretty well though.
I bought 3 g9's for under $900each earlier in the year and now with the new firmware update...incredible bang for my money. I use my cameras for video only.
you guys just produce some amazing reviews! What makes this difficult is the GH5 has a pkg with leica 12-60 for 2600 usd. no package for G9 what to get?
Dark Side Challenger that’s a tough call. If you shoot stills primarily the G9 is your better bet and primarily video go gh5. If it all comes down to cost. With that package they essentially cost the same even though it feels like a better deal with gh5 because the camera is more expensive. The gh5 is a very capable stills camera and the G9 very capable at video so they both are pretty great all around. Tough call. Do you want the top screen on G9? Do you want faster shooting of stills on G9? Do you need the extra video features on gh5?
TheCameraProject which extra features for example? I’m considering buying a g9 for my assistant instead of a gh5 (that I use and love)... there is a 300€ difference that those features must fill!!
Great video, just the right length. I just bought the G9 so have subscribed to your channel in case you do any more videos about the G9. This thing is packed with features and will take some time to master. Every camera has its negatives and appreciated your take on it. I don't mind the light touch of the shutter button since it takes less pressure to activate and so less vibration. But just about every YT vlogger has mentioned that. My main concern is video AF since Panasonic's commitment to contrast detection autofocus continues unabated even though phase detection is proving superior. Perhaps the new Fuji X-H1 is the answer but I plan to be using the G9 for a long time to come.
Steven Harte honestly as far as autofocus is concerned the camera is fantastic. I didn’t do a ton of video af but the stills performance was fabulous. And yeah this thing is super feature packed. It’s insane.
Yes, the G9 reviews I have watched/read uniformly say the stills AF is fantastic. The video AF is not as good for most. A helpful RUclips post about this is from Three Blind Men and an Elephant (MONGO Panasonic G9 AF + GH5 Hack Review). I haven't launched out in doing videos on the G9 yet, so keeping my fingers crossed.
I'm looking for a good camera for doing pictures on travel, with my kids, an all day camera with great automatic modes (wife, kids). Focus is on still, not on video ! What would you prefer or recommend ?
Patrick Martin I haven’t shot the rx10 but do own an rx100 and I have to say if you don’t think you’ll want to switch lenses you be spending a lot less money and carrying less bulk with the Sony. Yes it’s a 1inch sensor which won’t have as shallow depth of field and not quite the dynamic range but it’s still pretty respectable. It should be a good do it all camera without the complexities and costs of an interchangeable lens system. Still extremely capable! Panasonic also makes an rx10 competitor but that’s a whole separate conversation!
Patrick Martin the a7iii looks to be an amazing camera. That said please keep kit size, weight and cost in your mind before casually going full frame. If you worry about any of those 3 categories you may want to figure out what lenses before you get that camera. Then figure out size, weight and cost.
Nice work on this review! I need a camera which will focus while I'm walking, spinning, and going back and forth from me to another subject. You did a small segment (6:20) where you held the camera shooting video like a typical vlogger would, but during that time you were very static.I don't think Panasonic is there yet and look forward to the day they are. I'd love to go to 4/3 and this seems to be a wonderful camera.
Craig Ryan I think it would do ok with walking if you were holding it the whole time. Going from subject to subject might be more of a challenge. Overall it is a fantastic camera though
Thank you for the reply. I read such nice things about this camera, but I had a G7 and grew so frustrated with the focus I left the brand. Would love to try Panasonic again.

Help please!!! I want to turn on the orange light on the top LCD screen on my G9. I have never seen it work on my camera so I assume you have to turn it on in the settings somewhere. Please could you let me know how to turn on the orange backlight. Thank you!!
Thank you for showing 100 percent video. It made me think. I think the problem people have with micro four thirds is that when they pixel peep and zoom in what they see is garbage because what they see is their photography image software mapping pixels that do not exist. Of course an image from a larger sensor can be zoomed in more. The key to me is that the micro four thirds sensor is larger than 4k screens. So if you output your work to 1080 or 2160 it will be down sampled and there will be the same resultant number of pixels that would exist if a full frame or medium format sensor image was down sampled to 1080 or 2160. Whew. I have never said that to any one. Keep this a secret. And don't put it out on the internet.
Reza Travilla both really great. Em1 is a little smaller. So depends which you prefer. Video better on G9 by far. The olympus is probably better w olympus lenses and Panasonic definitely will be better with their lenses. So it depends if you are already invested. Both great cameras. I’d say better face tracking on G9.
These reviews never actually address what I most want to find out. How does the still photography work in the early blue hour just as its starting and golden hour. You see doing landscape that's when I do the majority of my work. The only thing I can take from reviews like this is that it's more a hobby snapshot camera and it's pretty much pointless to do any meaningful blue and golden hour photography.
FreeQuest I’m not sure how you get that from this review. Just because we don’t test the thing you want to see doesn’t mean it’s a hobbyist camera that can’t handle that. We test things like image stabilization and autofocus. Both very important to pros. We test video also very important to many people.
@@TheCameraProject Low light Performance is important in street and event and landscape I do realise you are a street photographer not sure what else you do and I assume from the last part of the video you shoot at night as well. Yet you mention nothing of low light photography. So this gives the impression to me at least you are aiming your review at fanboys, People that only shoot in good light and the general hobbyist that doesn't really do much more challenging than that. Low light photography is integral to the pro event shooter to the street photographer that likes to shoot at night or someone that is looking to get some lighter kit. Anyway, I do suggest maybe to even out any future reviews you also take that into account as well. GG:hf
@@freequest So first of all, see our website, thecameraproj.com for our G9 ISO test. We used to do 3 part reviews when we first started the channel, probably close to 40 minutes per review. But then we realize no one wanted to watch that, and with full time jobs, it wasn't sustainable for us either. We do appreciate the feedback and usually try to be thorough, but sometimes we just cut a section because basically summing up the G9 ISO with saying it is pretty comparable to other M43 cameras often gets the point across.
@@TheCameraProject You do realise that Google+ is going away. And yes an ISO test I did actually see that but it's not very clear not very well laid out requires you to blow up the image then press the information button for each image and you don't even mention this in your video nor on your description. Hate to say this but looks like an afterthought how hard is it to add this info directly to the image you know and maybe mention it in your video link in your description maybe you know might even drive people to your web page not that hard really so yeah that's why I saw its an afterthought. BTW the longest video you have on your channel is "Beer and A Shot - Photography competition" at 22mins and 2.5k views so don't tell me this 40 mins stuff doesn't work when you can actually find it out. I am not gonna tell you how to run a youtube channel nor how to do reviews I have no experience in that but I do know from business and yes I work I own a business its consistency in everything you do that's how you build brands that's how you progress people expect it people look forward to it. Anyway, I wish you the best results in everything you do but the key to everything is consistency and that's it. BTW gonna mute this I really can't be bothered arguing. You do ok work you can do better you just need to finesse it a bit more. GG:hf
@@freequest I know you've muted, and i don't intend on arguing. Just a few points. Yes, google+ is now going away, but wasn't when we put the photos there. Yes, you are right, we should have put the link in description. Our 40 minute review were 3 part reviews. Like our sony A7II or Fuji X100T reviews, not one long video. Yes, it would have been clearer with info on photo, but this review probably took about 50 hours or work in addition to our full time jobs. We don't get paid to do these. We hope they can help people in any way possible.
alan nguyen Do a budget of lenses you'd like to have with both systems. I think you'll be very surprised about the result! ;) At least the prizes of Sony GM lenses made those systems rule out for my needs! :P (For example: the a6500 with its overheating issues is by far more expensive than a GX8 with no overheating in 4K. Matt I don’t have the G9 on hand but I believe it is done from the power switch.
TheCameraProject Alright, I'll have a play around and see what I can do. Thanks
Yeah hold the power switch further to the right, and it will light up.
Oi, the GX8 is a flagship camera! As was the GX7, top of the class. Some petty recognition is due.
Have you spotted the 'magical floating hair' since?
Only in my dreams... only in my dreams
And don't put it out on the internet.
great review
How does it compares with EM1 Mark II since they both share almost similar price.
Look for to the GX9 review, hopefully?
bobbintonn yup! It won’t be our next one but hopefully one after that!
Don't forget to talk with your left hand too!
C'est la même qualité d'images que ma Lumix FZ330 lol
I'm on welfare...I can only dream of owning a camera like that...one day I will find a way to get one...
No review on the g85?
D Ch never got the chance to and it’s on the older side now
you use the G9, you have constant AF issues see at 5:56 not moving subject (you) covering 50% frame and not even in focus... lame
Yeah! And also the pics he took, most of them appeared to be in focus until he zoomed in. And thats with an expensive lens too.
Hey, that stink eye lady kinda looks like Julia Stiles! (10 Things I Hate About You)
These reviews never actually address what I most want to find out.
FFS, 0.34" and you've already said "put it through it's paces".
too expensive comparing to Sony a7iii, everything from Lumix to expensive.
alan nguyen Do a budget of lenses you'd like to have with both systems. I think you'll be very surprised about the result! ;)
At least the prizes of Sony GM lenses made those systems rule out for my needs! :P (For example: the a6500 with its overheating issues is by far more expensive than a GX8 with no overheating in 4K. All around the Lumix is a better value for its prize!)
100% didn’t like it
