Well done. Will look forward to future G9 videos by you. I have the Fz2500 & like the option of having a half / press shutter - or not. If I get the G9 I would have the focus assigned to a separate fn button. Maybe one of the two front right side buttons ( the top 3 are hard wired ) I would also prefer changing the left / upper corner preview button over to the the right - for my right thumb or finger. Could yo look into your G9 & see if this can be done ? Thanks
Hey Ray, I just had a look for you. You CAN assign focus to one of the two front right-side buttons. But it looks like the left/upper preview button is not editable. However, the button right next to it Fn3 (default assigned to toggle through EVF modes) IS editable.
Thanks for cking. Having the preview button placed where it is might be a small oversight by Panasonic. If one has a substantial telephoto lens ( weighty ) the left hand would need to remove it's support of that lens in order to press the green preview button. I was hoping it could be re-placed for the right hand.
You might try this for ch-ing the playback button location. menu - go to 3rd line option - select operation - go to 3/6 page & select FN button set up select setting in REC mode - highlight the Fn 1 or Fn 2 button on page 16/17 select Red/Playback switch & that's it. A kind fellow at our local camera store used a demo G9 & found this. Thanks
Great overview! I’ve just acquired a G9 (in 2023) as an upgrade and I’m blown away after only a few days. I’ve overcome the sensitive shutter button by setting up Back Button Focus (thanks Marlene) and the front function lever to switch from LMonochrome to Vivid Colour on the fly. Also upped the firmware system to 2.7. Exciting times. Thanks✌️
I've only owned a few cameras, but the G9 is the best I've owned. I sold my Nikon D500 and lenses a few months ago and switched to the G9. There are only a few specific instances where I miss the D500, mainly the autofocus in strong backlight was more consistent and noise above iso 3200. In all other ways, the G9 seems like a solid upgrade. The stabilization is amazing, and allows me to keep the iso lower in cases where the subject isn't moving too much.
Very nice review. Features outlined quickly and to the point. Having just gotten my G-9 last week and puting it through its paces. I must agree, this is probably one of the best cameras I have used in almost 50 years of shooting. Last time I was this excited about a camera was when I bought the very first Auto Focus SLR, Minolta's Maxxum 7000 back in 1985.
Great review Frederick. Very informative. I did hear you correctly when you said: " it's the best camera I've ever owned". The GH5 younger sibling. Many features as the senior GH5. Thanks my man.
Yes, you heard correctly. I also own the GH5 and I have positioned it "mentally" as my "video-centric" tool, and the G9 as my "photo-centric" tool. A match made in heaven.
Hey, Man. Great review, congrats! I do your words mine🤙🏻 I also own a GX85, mostly for street sessions, but the G9 is the one that makes me feel more and more addict to go out and create amazing photos. That's it, the M43 is the New Universe I decided to enter with my entire soul. See ya, blue skies 🍀📷
Nice video for a great camera. I recently picked one up and I'm very happy with it. It's not as consistent as my Canon 7D was for bird photography but I'm very satisfied with the results. I'm primarily using the Panasonic 100-300 mm mark ii with it but it has no problems with my Olympus lenses. I will check out the other videos. Thanks.
Great review, thank you. I will look out for more of your videos. One thing though. I had heard several reviews referring to this camera as being large. But for large tele zoom photography, if you add the Panasonic 100 - 400 it is half the weight of an equivalent Canon or Nikon set up.
A very good overview of the G9, which is a superb camera. I'm looking forward to your future videos as you put it to work. I'm also working with new G9 based outfit, changing from my Nikons, and it'll interesting to see your views.
Very good review. I recently got the G9 and think it is a great camera with lots of fun factor as you say. The micro 4/3 sensor produces great photos IMO and am enjoying the compact, lightweight lenses that keep the overall weight very manageable. Will be waiting for more G9 videos from you.
Just got 2 G9 and 3 zoom Leica lenses one still in preorder. 28 years with Canon By far best ergonomics camera and lenses size was very important factor on purchasing the LUMIX G9
This camera is an ABSOLUTE BEAST. I've only had it for a couple of weeks. I normally thorouly research everything before I drop that kind of cash and invest so much time. But this thing keeps surprising me all the time. I keep discovering new stuff and I find myself grinning like an idiot each time LOL! The manual is useless. It doesn't do it justice.
Nice review, traded in F3Nikon that was about 35 years old with lens, etc.......Anyway got sold the Lumix G-9 which I loved when first handling it. It's way more camera then I need for an recreational photo person, but love it. Just have to now learn how to use it and take it off of " Auto". Thank you for a nice review.
Partly this review has pushed my decision. I moved today from Canon 1D Mark IV and 7D Mark II to the G9. I have sold them all. I was tired to carry stones in my bag.
Hello, I agree. Tomorrow I will be trading in my Canon 7D Mkii & Sigma 150 - 600 for a Panasonic G9 and Panasonic 100 - 400. It will be like releasing a mill stone... albeit a very good quality mill stone.
I’m super interested in getting one and boy was I surprised to find out that you can get one of these at a deep discount. Saw a few online for 1,250 usd. Must have sucked for those who got it for full SRP.
No, I did not guess it (nightmode) lol. I’ve to say Fredrick, this review you made makes me realize that we live in a post CanNikon world where Full Frame is no longer the “holy grail” or even the sweet spot between performance and image quality. Panasonic has made incredible strides with the help of those great lenses even for a micro 4/3 sensor (where Nikon failed with their Cx series). I personally switched completely to Fuji X early this year and I haven’t missed my D750 or my Z7, thanks to Fuji’s great lenses. And Sony has left Nikon/Canon crying mama. Bottom line, Panasonic, Sony, Fuji, iPhone, Samsung, this is a new world where everyone can pick what they like and be individual. Gone is the iron throne of photography (The Canon/Nikon standard).
Hey man nice video, can you make a detailed video on low light performance compared to an apsc or full frame camera? Low light it's the only thing that's stopping me from buying one right now
I shoot mostly low light and sometimes no light. And this camera will deliver based on skill and technique. As they say micro four thirds is not for everyone. But it does well for my low light needs.
This will probably be my new camera tomorrow !! I got 2 options , the Leica 12 to 60 or the Lumix 12 to 60 ? . The Lumix is about 350 pounds cheaper , should I go for the Lumix lens or the Leica lens ? 350 extra pounds in my pocket would be nice !
Hi is the g9 any better in low light than a g7? I know they have the same sensor but it does have slightly more pixels and you can surely put the ap lower because of the image stabilisation?
Awesome camera and review! Since the shutter button is so sensitive is there anyway to turn it off and only use the rec button in video mode? I went through the settings but could't find anything. Thanks,
I don't think so Trooper. I don't know, but it seems like Panasonic should be able to do something via a firmware update. But after using the camera for about a week I have to say I'm used to the sensitivity now. But now, when switching to a different camera body, the other shutter button feels "sluggish".
After 10 minutes I was used to the shutter button. I can't understand why it's mentioned in all reviews. Maybe it's because I have not the biggest hands. Yes, the body is big compared to a still very good OM-D EM5 MkII or so, but because of the size it's a serious tool again. In terms of image quality I compared it to a Nikon D750. Unfair? Not at all! In real life I couldn't see any differences even at ISO6400 in the darkness. And yes the EVF is just great!
Agreed Stefan, the sensitive shutter just takes a little getting used to. But initially it's just not what we're used to. I actually like it now. When our complaints come down to minuscule things like shutter sensitivity it's a good sign the rest of the camera is amazing.
Very informative. Thank you. I'm looking in to purchasing this camera, but I'd like to know more about the 80mp setting. Does this mean that files will be large in dimensions? I ask mostly because I print/frame my work and I'd like to go quite larger. Do you feel this camera will deliver quality analog enlargements? Thank you so much for your help. -Jason
The 80mp mode is truly amazing and results in stunning images. Each shot produces very large files but totally worth it. You must always use a tripod though, no exceptions.
Hi, I was wondering what the purpose of those red strap things are on both sides of the camera? I see them a lot but what are they called and whats their function?
Mr. Johnson, I have D90 and D700 right now. Do you think that G9 will replace my camera? I think I need to sell D90 but I think it's hard for me to let go my lovely D700 (I love this camera IQ). I mainly shot weekly, I'm a non-profesional casual shooter.
I know that this video is over a year old, but I have a question. I am looking for something to shoot aviation (airshows and Jedi Transition) and birds of prey in flight with. I have a Sony A7iii, and with the 70-300mm lens, I simply wasn't getting enough reach. I could get this camera plus a 100-300mm (200-600 full frame equivalent) lens for about $1000 less than the cost of a Sony 100-400 G Master lens, but it would mean that I would be carrying a separate camera and lens solely for one purpose. Is the autofocus on this suitable (fast enough and accurate enough) for aviation & birds in flight photography? Thanks.
Hi R Hogarth - the AF seems more than fast enough for me using the 12-35 I have on the camera most of the time. But I can't vouch for aviation and birds in flight photography. That'd require glass that I don't own, plus I've never shot that subject matter before.
I'll put it on the list. I don't think the G9 is too big for street. But it depends on what "too big" is. The body style is definitely more "DSLR" than thin mirrorless.
Panasonic Lumix G9 Question? "is There a video record Time Limit of 29.99 min on Usa version G9? like there is on all the eu // uk Pal versions always have??? I don't get it, guys. Even the Fuji X-T2 is smaller than the Panasonic G9 although it has a bigger sensor...
Still photography on M43?... LMAO. Nah, soon as you go over 1600 ISO your f***ed. This review is 3 years old, and my G9 is still my favorite camera. And I am NOT a "RUclipsr selling to amateurs", there are no affiliate links associated with this video. If I cared about high-iso (or shooting wildlife) I'd pull out my full-frame Lumix S1. There is no one-size-fits-all camera - yet. Sounds like you are basing your opinion on micro-four thirds solely on your experiences with the GH5. Have you even TRIED the G9 yet? Or have you dismissed all m43 cameras based on your experiences with one. What's that... "sensorism"?
and you have to deal with one of the worst menu systems on the market and lug around MASSIVE and heavy lenses. Apples to Oranges. This panasonic uses very small lenses
I have both the a7iii and the G9 - the Sony is raw, wildly capable, with crude usability. The G9 oozes finesse, ruggedness, intuitive usability. The camera shift between A & B cam depending on what task I have for the day. The G9 does Trick shots and telephoto. The a7iii does gimbal work, low light, and general video. They overlap on portraits with the G9 being my favorite despite the fact that even kitted out with a nocticron the Sony outperforms it by being smaller, less expensive with the 1.8, lighter, better eye tracking, and slightly higher IQ.
Well done. Will look forward to future G9 videos by you. I have the Fz2500 & like the option of having a half / press shutter - or not. the G9 is totally underestimated - Sony gets massive hype for everything they come out with - but folks need to try the G9

Feel same way, G9 is an exciting camera to still photography.

keep up the great works cheers
A really good well presented look at the G9, there's some fantasic deals on these now in 2023. ATB MMMD

great review!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
I love this camera!!😍
Great review. Way to keep this show going.
Thanks Juan!
Good review. As for the video specs, I believe the g9 is a "stills" camera primarily, video is secondary yet useful.
I agree. However, the G9's video capabilities are well beyond my "current" video requirements.
You're a great presenter!
Thank you so much!

Hey man nice video, can you make a detailed video on low light performance compared to an apsc or full frame camera? Low light it's the only thing that's stopping me from buying one right now

great review, thanks... question. Is the quality as good as a full frame? using for Real Estate interiors..
If used in sensor-shift Hi Resolution mode then yes, definitely good enough. Really incredible shots possible.

2020 and it's just got firmware v2.0 and priced dropped so it's flagship features at a mid-range price.

Panasonic Lumix G9
Question?
"is There a video record Time Limit of 29.99 min on Usa version G9? like there is on all the eu // uk Pal versions always have???
Thank you in advance"
John h
Answers to your question
Yes, there is a 30Min Video Recording Limit on HD Video, & 10min Limit On 4K Video
Do to due to sensor heating in poor design of reducing heatsink mass?
thus If Video is your focus then the GH5 is a much better choice for just additional $285.00 more
ED
Why you didn’t have pictures , show on a working flow .
I don't know how you get ISO 100 ? the lowest mine goes to is 200
Turn on "Extended ISO" under "Exposure" in the "C Wrench" menu. You'll then have access to ISO 100
Fantastic, many thanks for your mega fast reply and help. Great video.
My pleasure Nick!
What’s the Uncle Doug score on this one? Lol
We'll have to have Unc weigh in!
Uncle Doug loves it!
Uncle Doug!! :D
Actually, the lowest ISO of the Lumix G9 is 200 not 100.
"...80megapixel RAW and/or JPEG"? It has both or one or the other?
It's both. High resolution mode allows you to save the images in JPEG + RAW simultaneously, or JPEG OR RAW individually.
B
How is the auto white balance ? Panasonic has always been weak in this category.
Seems fine to me. But you'd have to see if it meets your requirements. I've never had any problems with Panasonic's white balance.
On my g80 the white balance is prettig good, so g9 will nail it
Now body only for about $1000? What a bargain.
What is actually the advantage now of MFT with cameras like this? Did we not say before MFT is cool because it allows smaller and compact cameras? What is compact and small here compared to DSLR? They overlap on portraits with the G9 being my favorite despite the fact that even kitted out with a nocticron the Sony outperforms it by being smaller, less expensive with the 1.8, lighter, better eye tracking, and slightly higher IQ.
Sir Lancelot agreed. Just a shame the G9 is not great for landscapes which is what I shoot most.
And you forgot the cost of the lenses for that Sony?
