The G9 has been my main camera since 2018 and I can attest that it's a reliable workhorse. I mostly do photos but occasionally videos too. It's been updated to shoot 10bit. HLG, 4k60p with no crop. A recent firmware update enables linear focus pooling with supported lenses too! I also use it for zoom calls via hdmi so there is no record limit (it's not recording) and it has never overheated, not even once. Overall, highly recommended for photographers who casually do videos.
Have a g9 and and believe that it is one of the best cameras out there for enthusiasts. Photography pretty much perfect, video yes, with some caveats as you noted. In the latter the AF does have a bit of pulsing sometimes; never found it an issue if using in a studio though and of course, many folks simply use manual focus. I find 650+ grams too heavy and the camera too big for a MFT camera though almost defeating the purpose of a MFT IMO so it rarely gets much use in my case (the ability to use small MFT lenses mitigates somewhat). I would say the same about any camera over 500 g though (we use for long hikes and backpacking where both weight and volume are key, so a much more limited use). Still for local stuff the camera performs well. And of course it’s image stab is one of the best! Rumors abound about the G9ii having more of a hybrid AF like Sony etc, but suspect it will be even bigger than before. Always enjoy your videos!
Thank you Shayne for a great video, I have been a Canon shooter going back to film Eos 5 film days. In 2018 I went to USA Las Vegas & Grand Canyon with Canon 70d (dual pixel auto focus) for st[lls and newly acquired Panasonic Lumix G7 for video. I am primarily a stills shooter so bought the G7 along for Video only and very happy with the footage, I felt a little silly having two cameras around my neck but I was really impressed with the video quality of the G7 over the dual pixel 70D so evan with two cameras on neck this was a good option for me. Whilst walking around Vagas I decided to just take the G7 because with the 14-42 kit lens i hardly new that I was carrying a camera and I took many more shoots because it was so easy to shoot with and although it was only 16mp this wasn't important because I was only taking street photos and mainly in B & W. When I ran these through my laptop back at the hotel which I don't normally take whilst on holidays I was absolutely amazed by the quality from this tiny camera so I used it for every day stills from then on. Shortley after my return to Australia after lots of Utube reviews I purchased a Lumix G9 with 12-60 kit lens quickly followed by a few more prime lenses. I eventually purchased a Leica 100-400 which I now use primarily for bird photography and whilst I still shoot full frame Canon Eos R with Tamron EF 150-600 G2, I prefer to take Lumix because its much lighter and easier to carry. The Lumix Leica 100-400 produces very sharp images and although I sometimes get a little more noise than the Eos combo this can be easily fixed with Topaz. After watching your very informative reviews I will probably upgrade to Luix G9ii. thank you & regards John C
The best video ‘Hack’ for the G9 is an Atomos Ninja V. No more recording limits and 50/60 fps at 10bit 4:2:2 and the option to use ProRes HQ because the Ninja is doing all the heavy lifting and just ‘borrowing’ the sensor from the G9 and you should be able to pick up a G9 and a Ninja V for less than a thousand bucks. Plus it’s still a very capable photography machine especially if you pair it with a good quality Prime like the Lumix DG Nocticron 42.5mm f1.2 which is (an expensive lens) arguably the best MFT lens ever made!
@@bingbong4848 I have heard good things about those Leica Zooms but I had already invested in several primes, and a sigma 18-35 plus speed booster, before the Leica zooms were released
Great Video! I think this is my first comment in this channel, but I think I saw all of your videos. Just wanted to let you know that you have a huge fan who lives in S.Korea. I just ordered S5M2 with a double lens kit. Can wait to get it!
My G9 + GH5ii has rendered the need for a GH6 upgrade obsolete. Now a GH7 with PDAF will change the game....but only for the GH5ii. The G9 will stay put until it stop outputting. Top Notch Content!
Hi Shane, try the gh5 in FHD with the 14-140mm. Its optimized for FHD with a lightning fast AF motor. One area, 60 fps, high SS. I have practically no complaints with my gh5. Except for sometimes going awol when light/contrast conditions are not good enough. So, depending on my situation I use AFC, MF or MF icw AFC. Yes, the gh6 performs better in a wider range of situations, doing the work for you. So does FD, its only an extra step better than CD/DFD. Closing arguments, the ultimate review is what I SEE on my 65 inch tv screen, with a viewing distance of 3.5m. I don’t notice any hunting/pulsing unless with zoom or push my nose to the screen 😉😀 I am not a pro, doing weddings with its critical moments, like THE KISS. Thank you for excellent reviews, Frans
I have a GH6 and I bought a second-hand G9 at the start of the year for astro photography. The G9 blows the GH6 out of the water for low light photography and hold's its own for photo work. At times I can get better images with the G9 over the GH6. My mate has the S5ii and my GH6 competes very well against that camera. The S5ii Kit Lens is unbelievably pin-sharp and the Phased Detection auto focus is superb, and my GH6 keeps up admirably with auto focus. But when the GH6 gets Phased Detection, then I will ditch my camera in a heart beat. I am getting very excited with the rumors for a G9 upgrade.
The G9 is a great camera, especially for the price. I use it side by side with the GH6 at times and they are a good pair. The recording time limits are the main thing with the G9. It would be perfect to set up for static shots, but in many scenarios, you might need more time. The G9 is also annoying how you can’t adjust video shutter speed in manual mode. I do that all the time with the GH6 when shooting both video and stills.
Studio looks terrific! Awesome video, awesome talent :) The G9 was a real winner and I have a hidden hope there will be a version II some day soon. It's a camera that just plain worked! Thumbs up 👍👍👍
I just bought one on eBay for $840 and it comes with a 56mm f1.4 lens, plus a battery grip! (This is also in Australia) I have the G85 already, which honestly is pretty similar and DOESN'T have the record limit so long as you use 64GB or larger SD cards. (PS I am fairly sure the G9 will keep recording but just break the recording up? The G85 does the same if the cards are small, but if the cards are big you just get one file.) Crazily though, even though it's older and less equipped, the G85 sells for just as much!
I love my G9. It's the only good camera I use. I am waiting to see if G9 II is introduced at IFA in Berlin (Sept 1-4, I think). If it is, and has PDAF, I will certainly and happily buy one!
My G7 died. The shutter would not retract. It would shoot in electronic mode and video just fine. So, fix the G7 or invest in the G9. After the first image I shot I saw the difference. I haven't looked back and love the camera. I often wondered what I would buy to replace it if something happened to the G9. Well, GH6 comes to mind. BUT... if there is a G9 MK2, that might be the one!
The G9 has still some advantages over the GH6 : - Issue with the sensor (streaking issue). - Different detail rendering (new engine), some people don't like it. - No 6K photo, no I Dynamic, no I resolution. - IBIS only slightly better than GH5 and worse at some focal lenght. - Crop inside the image in 5,7K. - AF still very bad and much worse in Open Gate than the GH5 with most lenses. Also, the camera has a big issue with focus accuracy in video with low frame rate (below 48fps) in 4K/C4K and 5,7K, no issue with the GH5. - No fan It's a shame because the GH6 has fantastic colors, nicer than the S5II, it has good IBIS and also 4K 120fps.
I think you made this video for upcoming Lumix G9 Mark 2. Because, it will be Phase detection first MFT camera. Lastly, I want to ask that what about Dynamic Range? GH6 has a dynamic range mode and it works very well. And I can choose GH6 maybe only that.
Fingers crossed they make a phase detection M43 camera. The rumours have been going crazy the last month or so. I hope they update the G9, G85, and GH5/6 with PDAF at some point. The GH6 will handle the dynamic range better with DR Boost, but I left it off for the video comparison.
