    The family’s financial status definitely helps the storylines because they need to be grounded. Episodes are almost entirely set in the local community, the holiday episodes not being Simpsons style international trips but something as simple as a holiday house down the coast because that’s all the family can afford. The kids don’t have the latest technology, and find joy in each other for it. Bob uses a flip phone long after they’re out of fashion because it’s cheaper.

      I like that currently, the show has stayed in the local surrounding area besides one episode where they visit Linda's parents in Florida. It makes it feel a lot more grounded since it's not like they go to places all over the world while also struggling with money

  • @raylast3873
    @raylast3873 Год назад +133

    One reason Bob and Linda are unique, aside from not being disfunctional like most sitcom-couples, is that Bob is usually the reasonable of the two. Linda is the chaotic one who‘s impulsiveness is often driving the plot. This is a reversal from the usual dynamic, but at the same time the two aren‘t mismatched at all. Bob isn‘t super-smart, he‘s just usually the one with better judgement. But he‘s also emotionally unaware, and occasionally tries too hard to get his way.
    What really puts the Belchers above other sitcom families are the kids though.

    4. Relateable character traits that make most characters feel like actual, real people, not charicatures.
    5. Family with lower socioeconomic status has a lifestyle that reflects this realistically. Linda repairs clothes and sews costumes. They drive to Florida to see Linda's parents. Their pricier choices are often offset with noted delayed restaurant repairs and the like. They are turned aside for loans, balance bouncing checks, and are often behind on rent. They feel more like real people.

    I recently became a believer. My girlfriend introduced me to Bob’s Burgers and this video pretty much sums up how I felt about the show and why I love it. Futurama and Aqua Teen Hunger Force are my favorite adult cartoons, so this was a huge departure from what I was use to, but it’s literally the stuff like:
    Bob: “Regular Sized Rudy? Why do they call you that?”
    Regular-Sized Rudy: “Look at me, I’m regular.”
    That has me falling out of my bed onto the wooden floor, rolling in pain. Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Futurama and Bob’s Burgers are my holy trinity of adult cartoons

    • @emericcson123
      @emericcson123 Год назад +18

      Tbf, Futurama is also a pretty dysfunctional but ultimately loving found family. They don't mean to be the worst, the world they live in is just the worst lol. I mean, Bender is...Bender. But Fry tries his best, he's just not smart enough to keep up a lot of times and Leela sees that. But
      Bob's Burgers is definitely more about finding humor in the small parts of life, rather than wild settings and situations like most others, including Futurama.

      I like that Bob’s Burgers is more akin to something like King of the Hill though where it focuses on somewhat realistic stuff and real world struggles involving family and what not. Even though it can be crazy too at times just like Futurama, ATHF, Family Guy, simpsons etc. it doesn’t need over the top stuff like Sci Fi, time travel or some supernatural element to pull it off and does so in a grounded way like KOTH. Even though i still love all the other shows I mentioned for those reasons.

    I think one of the main reasons Bob’s Burgers is so endearing is because the audience can relate to the characters and the situations.
    Unlike the simpsons or family guy, much of the storylines on Bob’s Burgers are grounded in reality albeit exaggerated. Lots of the plots are plausible and aren’t nonsensical garbage. It doesn’t have to resort to shock humor or ludicrous plots to relate to an audience.

      Exactly. The Simpson’s have transcended the realm of reality. Homer, a man with a high school education works as a nuclear scientist, has been an astronaut, an assassin, and a CEO. A man who arguably has a learning disability. So the entire premise of the simpsons just seems like a fantastical nonsensical cartoon.
      But Bob’s Burgers seems grounded, it’s relatable, they feel like a real family not just a caricature. And the characters are more fleshed out and have real personalities. They have relatable struggles and problems. You can relate to Bob because everyone has financial problems and existential crises regarding failure.
      And most importantly the belchers don’t have a magical saving grace. Often times Bob doesn’t even get what he wants at the end of the episode. And it shows that Bob is just a person, he’s not the main character he’s just a normal guy and not everything goes the way he wants.

    One thing I like about Bob's Burgers is Tina. Most cartoons would always have the nerdy boy whose obsessed with girls and is always creepy. But in Bob's Burgers, it's a nerdy girl who's obsessed with boys (which isn't seen that often in cartoons or tv shows, and even though she has her awkward/weird moments at times, it doesn't come off as the usual nerd/geek stereotype. Yes she likes boys, fanfiction, and is somewhat of a geek, but she's her own character despite that.

      I thought this about the simpson's/family guy crossover because they clearly just did it to "cave to pressure" (misunderstood people memeing about a crossover as fans genuinely wanting it) and because they wanted to boost the ratings of their shows with an event when the popularity was dropping off.
      The thing is, they're stuck in thinking people don't like it because they don't tune in every week (people like to wait for a show to build up and binge the season when all the episodes are released) and they think being legacy media is enough to get people to keep watching it. We haven't watched the Sunday Night lineup in years in my house just because we found more interesting things to watch. Also haven't watched Simpsons in years even though we have been keeping up with the new Family Guy episodes.

    It feels like Bob's Burgers hit the mark when they decided to stay with the mundane. No one's going to space, or inheriting an absurd fortune. No one's joining the mob or running for president. It's just a bunch of small, plausible stories that focus on normal life. I think we need more of that, and like you mentioned, a little bit more of a sense of community. I feel like our cynicism is being brewed in the distance growing between all of us, distances growing in large buildings and soulless neighborhoods where people don't know, talk to or care about each other. And yes, the fact that almost no one is mean-spirited makes it a nice, hate-free and stress-free viewing experience. It's pretty hard to write comedy these days without being a asshole to someone else, which means the comedy in B'sB has to be clever and as well as funny. Really love this show.

    What I find the most admirable about Bob's Burgers is the fact that the show doesn't take the low road and use disgusting topics just to get people's attention (ex. rape, incest jokes, jabs at the government etc.)
    Meanwhile, Family Guy constantly....CONSTANTLY relies on those topics too often in its modern episodes; a most notorious example is Quagmire's Sister

    • @SupHapCak
      @SupHapCak 7 месяцев назад +3

      Quagmire's sister would have been a good episode if they had taken the route of Lois convincing her to go to Joe, because Joe is Quagmire's friend and a cop and could keep her abusive boyfriend out of the house.
      Instead they portrayed her as stupid instead of just brainwashed.
      Actually there was an episode of F is for Family (Idk why some people don't like it? Probably want to shit on Bill Burr) anyway there is this guy who is super charming and works his way into everyone's good graces, until Frank and/or his wife see him being a huge jerk to his girlfriend behind closed doors. Then when they try to get her help, the guy turns on their family.
      I think that episode portrayed the situation better than Quagmire's sister, as they only realized something was wrong when the two were in private. In Quagmire's Sister everyone can see there is a problem, and they see him beating the crap out of her and assaulting her, but Joe makes up that BS (for the sake of the plot) about her having to come to the police and file the complaint herself. This is a) not true. You can and should report someone being attacked no matter who is attacking who or their relationship to each other, because if it's bad enough someone could be getting killed. B) It's misinformation and may cause some people to not seek help when they need it.

Teddy is also incredibly realistic. If you operate a shop, or a community-restaurant, or a communist party, your odds of having at least one customer like Ted are like 90%.
    Ted‘s wholesomeness is perfectly balanced by his bouts of mania, and aside from the Belchers themselves he is one of the best representations of working-class existence on Television.

      Like you can tell he's trying to do his magic trick because he thinks the trick will put his parents back together, even if he doesn't really know or acknowledge it himself. We have the whole night where he's by himself, too, and then the trick fails. This is also symbolic of him not being able to fix his parents, and he knows it, too.
      The kicker for me was when Louise went to dinner with him so he wouldn't be alone in between these two couples, who say on the surface they're doing it for Rudy, but they ignore him in favor of their dates the whole night.

The belcher kids will pick on each other but not in a horrible way where one sibling gets hurt badly and it’s all just sibling love and rivalry and I’m also in love with how Bob and Linda may have quirks and sometimes quarrel with each other but at the end love each other and their kids and all though there are some fights with each other, it’s not insulting one’s body issues or mentality but it’s just marriage problems that couples who really love each other can actually realistically go through.

    I think the reason that I still watch Bobs Burgers is that, in no episode do they abuse eachother. Think to either Family Guy or The Simpsons - Bart being choked was a long running gag, same with the constant fighting, abuse (both sexual and non sexual) and putting down of the family members in Family Guy. If for example, Bob were to strike Tina, he would be thrown from the house, their would be no excuse for Linda to let him back in, he struck her baby, 'their' baby. Characters have well defined, belivable persona's, if someone hit Gene at school, both Bob and Linda would be concerned, they wouldn't brush it off (Oh no Peter, one of out kids got into a fight at school - It wasn't that ugly one, was it? - Meg? No she's still in prison for lighting that forest fire)

    Bob's Burgers and South Park are my two favourite adult animated shows due to them being on the opposite sides of the scale. Bob's Burgers, like you said, is as inoffensive as they can get whereas South Park believes that if you can't make fun of everyone you can't make fun of anyone. If i want seriously offensive humor I'll turn on South Park, if I want to relax and have a calmer day, Bob's Burgers. I love how both shows cover serious topics in their own way while still being so vastly different from each other

    • @SupHapCak
      @SupHapCak 7 месяцев назад

      Believing that no topic is off limits for mocking/humor doesn't mean they can't write storylines that don't make fun of any one group. I also believe that you should be able to make fun of something without having your show shut down (I was never a fan of The Coffin of Andy and Leyley, never even saw it - I only know it because someone I watch made a video of it and it was in the title, but I never watched that.) However I learned because incest is a possible storyline one could get if they play the HORROR game that is apparently also full of cannibalism, the person who made the game was bullied into oblivion for including taboo subjects in her HORROR. GAME.
      This is the literal definition of a snowflake -- people click on a horror game, get horrified, and act like the thing shouldn't exist.
      There is literally a Planet. Effing. Sheen. Episode about one of the characters being put in prison because people don't like looking at her, and the lesson is you can't bully people (or something) out of the public sphere because one person doesn't like how it looks or sounds. When Planet Sheen (even though I like it, I acknowledge this is an unpopular opinion) makes more sense than society we have taken a wrong turn and need to start beating up babies for getting offended so frequently, and take back the power. Stop caring if people get their feewings hurt and tell them to eff off and suck it up.

      That being said, Family Guy's best episodes were the three or four where they parodied other shows/movies/books.

    What I love about this show is just how the main cast are genuinely kind people, and because of that they’re on good terms with almost everyone: most conflicts work out because other people in the show want to help and support the Belchers. And for Bob, he’s a genuinely talented chef and every so often he succeeds or gets recognized for it; like when he entered and lost a burger competition, but the winner (a professional multi star chef) brought a ton of people to the restaurant because he loved the burger Bob made.

    “Oh, hey Marshmellow”

When you're watching the show each Character has amazing one liners and they're all so hilarious 😂😂😂 also the way the characters interact with each other is always comedy gold. One of the biggest things that stands out in bobs burgers is the genuine love that’s in the family. Shows like family guy and American dad, while they have their moments, usually involve the family being at each other’s throat and causing each other harm, regardless of who it even is. Bob and his family LOVE each other in every episode. You see it in their dialogue, their actions, their motivations; it feels real. I love shows like American dad and South Park because of how out-of-pocket it can be, but bob’s burgers is a genuinely loving show and for that (along with many other reasons) it is by far one of the best adult animated shows out there.

    It takes you 12 minutes to explain why Bob's Burgers is popular?!? Here is why it is popular: the siblings play nice together and the parents like each other. Period. Look at any other sitcom with siblings, animated or live action, and it's the same thing: half the drama is just the siblings battling each other. Here they help each other. There's no Jan vs Marcia, nor Bart vs Lisa. It's Tina, Gene and Louise against the world and there is something wholesome about there. Plus Louis is a pyscho, that's pretty cool too.

But I stuck with it, and am glad I did, because Season 2 really stepped up in quality and kept me hooked. The relationships of the characters are what really sell the show. Bob and Linda are still madly in love even after 13-14 years. They're more subdued in their affection, but they constantly have each other's back, speak pretty highly of each other even if it's pointing out the quirks they love about them. The kids are very close and loving to each other and their parents. They like to drive them crazy but in that fun, I got you, or only I get to make fun of you. Tina is the middle child of the family, and we all know it. Despite Gene being the middle in age, in personality attention, she doesn't draw as much as the other two.. Linda's favorite is Gene because he's just as wild and in love showmanship as she is. Bob's favorite is Louise. She's chaotic to the max. But she's fun to be around she makes things interesting.
    Tina, though, being the obvious middle child is never really left out of their love or never forgotten. They remember her and do things with her. She's not actually forgotten about when that happens it's usually because she's a quiet person. But they never make her feel left out. Bob and Linda adore their kids, and even when they can be challenging to deal with. They never show absolute contempt for them. They don't strangle or beat them for existing near them. They're a pretty happy family struggles aside. I also love that the kids are best friends with each other. There's no mean tone to their relationships or interactions. They like each other and care about each other. This family is literally one of the best TV families in American media.

    I missed like….. 7 or 8 or 9 seasons of it lol. And I rewatched the whole thing on Hulu and was surprised how … great the show is. The thing I get from it is Bob isn’t portrayed as dumb like Homer or Peter, he’s just a bit unlucky. And there is no doubt at the end of the day that he loves his family and will do anything for his family, and that the entire family loves each other and him. I mean look at the My Little Pony (whatever their name of it was lol) episode where Bob was willing to get the tattoo to get the doll back for Tina.

    • @SupHapCak

      To be fair -- I don't remember the episode -- but I'd be like "that's my effing property and I'm taking it back" and I'd just take it.
      Like if it's Bob's or Tina's they have no claim to it.
      Also the pony stuff really should have had their own "adults only" or "kids only" split up cons so the target audience wasn't overrun with big, hairy men.
      Like I'm not saying they aren't allowed to like ponies or even shouldn't have their cons but the kids should have been allowed their own pony-cons without adults there as well.
      This is just me rambling now but I did see a thing that was like, there aren't any places that are just for kids anymore. Everything has to be "all ages" or have an adult section or something stupid like that. Restaurants even got rid of their playgrounds.
      The other thing that irks me is everything adults enjoy have to be kid friendly (Like COPA. Imagine an edict that strip clubs and cigarettes and porn all have to be child friendly). The internet is not FOR children just because they use it, and you can't say the whole internet has to be child safe like it's a toy or something.

I didn't think much of them back in the earlier seasons but curiosity got me to give the show a chance and over a decade later I have been keeping up with the latest episodes. The warmth and love the main family members have for each other, the strength of their leading female characters and the depths of their many characters. It doesn't try to be hardcore edgy like most of their contemporaries. Like Bob's burgers the show does its own thing and it's appreciated by the many fans who came to know and love it for what an underapprecited gem it really is.

It also helps that as the show has developed we've gotten to see how the family has its overall dynamics, but also unique interpersonal dynamics between the family members. We know that Jean and Linda have mom/son days where they get up to shenanigans, etc.
    And yeah, like you mentioned... they don't ever punch down at people when it comes to the jokes. That's really refreshing

    There is a subversion of the comedy character tropes in Bob's Burgers that is very important to identify.
    TRADITIONAL COMEDY
    Using the "8 characters of comedy" as our lens, traditional American sitcoms often place the husband/lead as the "lovable looser" archetype. These characters are extremely proactive; chasing their dreams and suffering the punishments when they inevitably take shortcuts to success. The natural counterweight to the "lovable looser" is the "logical one/voice of reason"; a much more passive character who often functions as the voice of the audience, and this role often falls to the wife.
    BOBS BURGERS
    Bobs Burgers kinda subverted, not just the roles, but the entire archetypal system. Bob is generally passive; just trying to get through his day and find little joys. This would suggest Lynda is the "lovable looser", but she is not. She is the "enabler". A character that encourages and empowers all those around her INTO active characters, BUT its important to note while she primarily enables action; she does NOT often raise the stakes. This keeps her framed as a loving encouraging parent, as opposed to a irresponsible/negligent one, and she responds as a protector when things go awry.
    The steak raising primarily goes to the Children who press far beyond Lynda's initial encouragements/enabling, along with the townfolk who are all a bit insane and are far too willing to engage with the kids antics.
    Its a really cool system that allows a wide array of characters to forward the plot despite the lack of a "lovable looser" parental figure.

    This show is great! I started watching it with my parents when I was still a young teen since most other adult shows had too much inappropriate humor and/or graphic stuff going on. Sure a lot of the jokes still contain "adult humor" but it's not portrayed in a way that is meant to make people feel scared and uncomfortable. It really is a show suitable for not just strictly adults. Even though I am an adult now, there are still many other adult cartoons that my parents recommend I avoid and I can see why. Also, like many other cartoons that go on for a very long time, some newer episodes are victims of the writers running out of ideas, but there still are a few good episodes here and there. I'm never going to miss out on watching an episode of this show. Love it to death!
